The Bucs And Teddy Bridgewater

August 5th, 2025

Taking a physical.

[UPDATE: 8:32 a.m.] Though nothing has been confirmed, despite him taking a physical in Tampa currently, but a former NFL player working for CBS claims the Bucs have signed a quarterback.

That would be veteran Teddy Bridgewater.

Again, nothing has been confirmed. But McFadden, who started for the Steelers at corner and was a former teammate of Bucs outside linebackers coach Larry Foote, seems to think it’s a done deal, claims Bryant McFadden.

Joe doesn’t think Bridgewater would be signed to be a No. 3.

Also, does this move mean Baker Mayfield just didn’t bang his hand on a teammate’s shoulder pads?

If Bridgewater is signed, this would be five years after then-Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians floated Bridgewater’s name as behind one of his “doors” to replace America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Per Adam Schefter of BSPN, the Bucs are “expected” to sign Bridgewater.

    Yikes

  2. Marky mark Says:

You need an experience backup. QB is a dangerous position.

  3. StormyInFL Says:

Ugh – this season is cooked if they’re missing Mayfield. Bongwater is a washed up scrub.

  4. RVATom Says:

    Yikes

  5. Bucsfan Says:

    No thanks

  6. StormyInFL Says:

I’d rather go into the season with Trask and secure that top 5 pick.

  7. Grateful Buc Says:

Hmmm, it wasn’t even a week ago that I was mocked hardily by the resident JoeBucs fan posters for suggesting T Lance was a better backup option than K Trask. And the Bucs may be signing T Bridgewater? LOL, can’t wait to hear the copium crewe explain this one.

  8. StormyInFL Says:

Bongwater is good enough to get you an 8-9, 7-10 record and out of the running for a good pick.

If you’re gonna go into the season with a garbage QB, do it with Trask and get that top 5 pick.

  9. HC Grover Says:

Hope that Mayfield did not crack one of those little hand bones.

  10. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

    Not panicking……. yet.

  11. darengibo Says:

This could also be an indictment against Trask as maybe he is not as “ready” as they thought
    .

  12. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

We need a back up, Teddy would be a good back up along with Trask. Bridgewater was on the Dolphins staff with Grizzard, and he played with Lavonte in High School. Bring him in, and big shoutout to FL HSAA and their incompetence for making this all possible.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

i think we can wave bye bye to pratt and the other kid lol…

this move doesnt move the needle one bit….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  14. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

A veteran backup QB with actually solid starting experience? Absolutely! Hope he never sees the field but I’ll take it.

  15. Bee Says:

If Trask isn’t ready then why is he on the roster? Go with Trask and see if he can fail or succeed, either way the Bucs win. Either get a top draft pick or make the playoffs. Bridgewater will get this team nowhere.

  16. Grateful Buc Says:

@Darengibo Trask has never once looked “ready.” If he were actually pushing anyone, he would’ve played real snaps, especially when Mayfield was still a mystery. That said, he’s mastered the art of getting paid without being blamed. Honestly, dream job

  17. Grateful Buc Says:

@Bee could it be true that this signing says more about confidence in Trask than it says about Mayfield’s injury? I don’t think Licht is considering Teddy to be a stand-in for Mayfield but rather as a stand in for Trask.

  18. Kenton Smith Says:

Guy is a good QB. Surprised but in a good way.

  19. Lol Says:

A very good backup that can win a game or 2. All in move or is Baker going to be out for a bit?

  20. Eckwood Says:

I Like the move !! QB room has improved , very obvious the # 3 ‘s aren’t wowing in the current offense . Keep Working J Licht !! Go Bucs !!

  21. Dom Says:

I don’t get the point of resigning Kyle Trask when it seems like the coaching staff and front office is terrified of the thought of him ever playing meaningful snaps

  22. RBUC Says:

Bridgewater was backing up Goff last season in Detroit cause they know Hendon Hooker is a BUST but I still think they would play Trask before Bridgewater if Mayfield were to get knocked out of a game

  23. Pewter Pirate Says:

It could be a lack in confidence in Trask. It could also be that there are currently only 2 QB arms in camp with Pratt and Mayfield injured. Generally, there are 4 arms in camp due to heat and not wearing down. It could be a mix of the above. We will find out the first week of September.

  24. RVATom Says:

They decided Trask isn’t effective when he drops back in coverage? 😉

  25. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Kenton

    I agree.

I don’t get all the hate for Teddy B…

I won’t be thrilled if he has to start any games for us – but I believe he is a pretty solid back-up QB.

  26. Greg Says:

This staff has under Light and Bowles has put a premium on character. Seems to me that this signing is all about that. It’s not about Trask, or about Baker’s hand. It’s about the QB room, and the reps that players are getting in practice.

With only 2 healthy QBs in camp who do you want leading and throwing balls to rest of the team? Trask, sure. He’s our #2 and is a great locker room and character guy, he’s earned the #2 spot and those reps. I don’t think Bazelak compares though. And to have a guy like Bridgewater come in, that instantly improves the quality of QB room AND the quality of the reps the offense is getting with 2nd and 3rd team.

Also, who cares if it means Trask needs to compete (again) for the #2 spot. That’s exactly what good teams do to make everyone better.

GREAT signing. This can ONLY improve the team. I trust that Baker’s not hurt, and this sets us up that if something were to happen to him, we have 2 solid choices to steer the ship till he gets healthy.

Also how much does it say about our organization that a guy like Bridgewater would rather play here (possibly as QB#3) than compete in other places with suspect QB1’s but crappy culture.

  27. jimmy Says:

    i guess baker isnt ok.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

i dont see why folks are crying lol….

this move has nothing to do with trask…it has everything to do with QB#3 & QB#4….

mayfield is the starter and the bucs are confident with trask as their backup…

bridgewater is currently a better option than # 3 or 4…simple as that

    GO BUCS!!!!

  29. No Mercy Says:

As a backup to mayfield I don’t absolutely hate it he has a ton of playing experience something trask will never have

  30. Dewey Selmon Says:

Does Bridgewater have any connection to Grizzard? If this an OC generated move?

  31. 813bucboi Says:

    greg

    i agree!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  32. Larrd Says:

Perfect third quarterback, especially since he’s worked with the new OC. Bridgewater can be good for a game or two.

  33. ocala Says:

I did not like the Trask pick at the time the Bucs picked him, but I do think he is a competent backup. If the Bucs keep Bridgewater I would think he would be on the practice squad unless Baker or Kyle were injured.

  34. Tbbucs3 Says:

Did Licht not consider that this would trigger the Gator portion of the Bucs fan base?

This is a great pick up hopefully Bridgewater makes the team and will be nice to have a guy who’s thrown more than four career passes.

  35. JD Still Says:

Before another disastrous round of quarterback roulette, remember this organization has let more quarterbacks go that have then gone on to other teams and won SuperBowls or made it into the Hall of Fame than any other team in Professional Football , with more Super Bowl wins than the Quarterbacks We have kept, and let’ s not even talk about first rounders we have chosen in the draft that have washed out! We are , to say the least , not very good at selecting or keeping quarterbacks,( and in some cases , never giving quarterbacks We did select , a chance to play), Being laughing stocks is getting old!

  36. First Last Says:

I’m actually all about this signing. He isn’t super old, he has playing experience, and more importantly playoff experience albeit not much. Think about it this way, we have built a stacked roster and cannot afford to tank this year with Mike Evans going for the all time record of most consecutive 1,000 yard years. We have many quarterback friendly players. I bet we could make a run with anyone at quarterback this year tbh.

  37. Defense Rules Says:

We’ve still got 5 weeks to go until our 1st game … smart signing, presuming that we didn’t pay too much for the flexibility that it offers. Teddy has been a very solid QB over his 10-year career. Career average of 66.4% completions is exceptional IMO, and fits right in with the short passing/high completion percentage game that the Bucs have favored over the past couple of years.

  38. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The occult of Trask does NOT approve this signing!

  39. DBS Says:

Oneilbuc will be ecstatic. He will have this guy the starter week 1. His new franchise QB.

  40. Bosch Says:

Didn’t Bowels say Mayfield’s hand is fine? I mean if Bowels said it you can take that to the bank, right? (Sarcasm)

  41. infomeplease Says:

For all you Trash fans… Seeing is believing!!!

  42. infomeplease Says:

    Oopppss..Trask

  43. Bowles4President Says:

For those wanting the outcome of an injured Baker to be a top 5 draft pick rather than 2025 wins, those teams drafting in the top 5 are rarely (never?) just one player away from being a Super Bowl participant in the next 24 months.
If you’ve got a top 5 pick, don’t expect to be playing in either of the next two Super Bowls.

  44. Jeff Says:

Baker’s hand must be busted up pretty bad.

    Steve Young and … ?

  46. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

All kidding aside about not panicking, having Teddy as a backup is a solid move to strengthen the qb room.

And for people wondering why Trask got resigned if they aren’t confident in him, I remember reading when he signed this year there is some kind of loophole where he is a super cheap cap hit.

  47. Aqualung Says:

Anyone with a sense of reason can look at the facts. Baker is banged up and Tristan isn’t out there to protect him. Pratt is in mall walking attire. That leaves 2 QBs for preseason games 1 and 2, and more importantly, live scrimmages during the week.

An NFL team needs at least 4 healthy QBs in training camp to navigate all the player evaluations for offensive personnel, and at this moment, the Bucs have 2.

If you’re gonna sign someone, why not someone with a resume’ instead of some meathead from St Barnabas School of Nursing. Look for one more after Bridgewater, and don’t panic when it happens.

As much as I like to tease the Kyle’s Trashk mob, this isn’t about that. Who can you sign who can play a half of football this weekend? Bridgewater is smart, and also, a great veteran advisor to Baker.

    Good move.

  48. Stanglassman Says:

Bridgewater makes sense. This HAS nothing to do with Mayfield or his bruise on his hand. The Bucs need another camp arm and could use a veteran Qb. If they really are a Super Bowl contender why would you go into a season without a backup Qb who has ever taken a meaningful NFL snap? The only question is how this effects Trask?

  49. Smashsquatch Says:

Camp arm to keep the practice schedules rolling while Bake takes his time to heal his hand. Nothing more, nothing less.

  50. JD Still Says:

To DailyRich Says: Doug Williams, first Black Quarterback Drafted in the First Round, took the Bucks to the playoffs three times,First Black Quarterback to start and win a SuperBowl Game, Multple Hall of Fames, collegiate football, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bucs , present finalist for NFL Hall of Fame.

  51. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

People reading too far into this. The Bucs needs at least 2 QBs, and right now Baker and Pratt are both hurt and the other camp meat guy they have sounds AWFUL from Joe’s reporting. I doubt Teddy starts the regular season with us. LET’S BAKE

  52. mj Says:

who’s going to play preseason? they didn’t have enough qbs and they can’t risk baker or even trask they just needed a body for a couple weeks
