Charlie Heck Gets Strong Vote Of Confidence

August 5th, 2025

Charlie Heck

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht, a true offensive line whisperer, stood firmly behind left tackle Charlie Heck today.

And Heck will be a very important figure in less than five weeks.

Heck will fill in to start the season for All-World left tackle Tristan Wirfs, certainly in the first two road games on turf in Weeks 1 and 2, at Atlanta and at Houston. How soon Wirfs will return is unclear.

Licht said Heck is getting a ton of quality work with Wirfs out and performing well. So Joe asked Licht if Heck is everything he thought he’d be through 10 days of training camp and spring practice.

Heck was signed in March after being a 49ers backup.

“He’s what we thought he was, which is very solid and what we’re looking for at that position when we lost [Justin] Skule,” Licht said of Heck. “And I don’t think we’ll miss a beat. You know, obviously, he’s not Tristan Wirfs, but in terms of what we’re looking for from a swing tackle that can step in for a couple of games or a few games.”

Joe has studied Heck often in camp and he looks ok, just ok. Heck looks like a backup capable of spot-starting successfully, as Licht said. Today was one of Heck’s better camp days, as Joe highlighted in practice notes.

Regardless, it smells like the Bucs are firmly behind Heck and no more moves at tackle are forthcoming.

Hopefully he does a heck of a job

When is the next cutdown day? That will be your big indicator.

  3. Hodad Says:

Every coach, every GM loves every player when asked on the record. Heck is all we got, there isn’t any other options out there right now even if he was sucking. Coach, GM speak. It’s the same when they’re asked about injured players. None of these guys tell the media what they really think. You have to try, and read between the lines. Truth is probably somewhere in between.

    Heck….maybe?

  5. Joseph C Simmons Says:

    Now we a need a backup-to-the-backup plan.

  6. SlyPirate Says:

With a full camp and preseason games, Heck will be ready. ATL, NYJ, PHI don’t have any elite pass rushers. Houston has Hunter (12 sacks). They’ll likely add a TE to help account for Hunter.

It’s too bad, but most fans are going to compare Heck to Wirf. Licht did not sign a player similar to Wirf. He was signed to be Wirf’s backup.

    Charlie Heck will be ok

Wow, he looks like the guy that sold me my used Chevy Nova

Bottom line is this moronic medical staff will end up costing us critical wins until Wirfs returns. No way we get away with this debacle unscathed. And if he’s out the full 4 games then this team is going to be in trouble. It’s inexcusable how this played out. You know and I know that Wirfs replacement is going to be destroyed when the bullets start flying for real. Makes me sick because the aspirations are huge this year.

Looks like the meat counter guy at my Publix with a red shirt on.

    I disagree SlyPirate.

ATL fine… but Texans Jets Eagles all have some juice. Hunter Anderson is arguably the best 1-2 punch in the league. Drawing a blank on the Jets kids name and Nolan Smith can prolly give Heck fits over there.

I’m a little worried. Hopefully doesn’t cost us any Ws but I imagine that LT downgrade is gonna cost us a drive or two and if we are lucky, nothing more.
