Liam Coen: Baker Mayfield “Yelled At Me”

April 6th, 2025

New Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard not only has a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback at his disposal, he’s got a fiery player who cares deeply.

At the NFL owners meetings last week, there was an NFC coaches breakfast, from which Joe has written loads of stories, but there also was an AFC coaches breakfast.

And that’s where new Jaguars head coach Liam “El Serpiente” Coen was found talking about his 2024 quarterback, Baker Mayfield. The former Bucs playcaller praised their high-level collaboration.

Coen said their discussions got very raw and very real.

“I can’t thank Baker enough for what we were able to do last year,” Coen said. “That was such a cool year, and he was such a big part of that. Maturing off the field, man. … Like he has really been able to grow. He understands the game at a high level. I think he’s a little underappreciated for that aspect of his game. We were able to have really good dialogue, which only helps being on the field and having communication, and his leadership goes without saying.

“…Just being able to have honest conversations. Like we had some real hard, at times, honest conversations that allowed us to in times of crisis be ok. Right? In times of adversity [we’d] have real fluid conversations because it gets heated. Bake’s yelled at me, and I was ok with that.'”

Coen added that he learned from Mayfield, as well as quarterbacks he’s been around like Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford.

Joe hopes 34-year-old Grizzard is equipped to have the same kind of relationship Coen had with Mayfield. That might not be so easy.

I don’t see what would be so hard about it

  2. Oxycondomns Says:

if grizzard can blend mike mcdaniel components to mvcays based offense i think grizzard could be another head coaching candidate . he may be our best one yet

  3. Alanbucsfan Says:

Mayfield should feel free to audible any dumb calls coming in on his helmet speaker

  4. Aqualung Says:

I wonder if El Serpiente’s girl QB who looks a lot like Geezahag Buenchen will yell at him.

  5. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

One of the Main people on the field is the quarterback, and I’ll tell you what what Kelsey got all in his coaches face a couple times last year. But look back at Brady he gets pissed and goes off and nobody says anything they get better afterwards. Baker has earned his keep here in Tampa Let’s Go Bucs!!!! He has been playing his heart out and I like, to those haters out there haha he has been awesome.

Oxy – agree. A little bit of that Dolphins offense, and getting guys in space – Tailor made for Baker, which is why I think they’re open to the idea of another receiver. We have 1-2 yrs left of peak Evans so it’s not the craziest thing in the world. I think the Bucs have done a sneaky good job of back filling their biggest need which is inside linebacker. Deion Jones is a good player, Anthony Walker is a good player, getting back a healthy Dennis along with a really good edge signing, their linebacker room is an order of magnitude better than last yr. That along with a healthy Bryce Hall – I dont think defense is a slam dunk as much as we think. I mean, I still think they grab a Benjamin Morrison or something, but if there’s a “gotta have it” stud receiver or something right there then say let them go nuts

  7. Pryda30 Says:

Hey Grizz, you can’t be worse than Byron Leftwich

  8. Ugotrobbed Says:

That’s why if left…big baby couldn’t take it!! lol

  9. Teacherman Says:

Ryan Miller and Rakim Jarrett look legit.

Kameron Johnson will hopefully evolve this off-season.

Palmer needs 10-15 pounds of muscle. He’s scared.

  10. Gipper Says:

Wish Baker would yell at RodMunch and make him cry.

  11. Larrd Says:

Coen sure talks about his old team a lot. I wouldn’t like it if I were a Jags fan. Get to work!

  12. Chris Says:

I don’t think there is anything to see here. They got along well and it worked. Coen got an HC gig. That’s it.

  13. GoneGator Says:

I agree with @Oxycondomns and @Gofortheface30 about the Miami influence on Grizz. I think he can be significantly better than Coen. Hopefully we can find a way to get multiple years from him.

  14. Kieran Says:

D U V A L should hand Baker a big bag of cash, Bake got that fool hired same with that Clown in Carolina, they wouldn’t have been hired if it wasn’t for Baker

Athlon Sports put out a story on our guy titled “Buccaneers Quarterback Baker Mayfield Legacy in Place in Tampa Bay”. They mentioned how Baker so far is the only quarterback to survive being drafted into the league by the Cleveland Browns. The story talks about how the Browns are known as the place where quarterbacks go to be destroyed and inevitably die. But Baker has persevered and playing great ball despite not having a coach to teach him the ins and outs of the NFL when he was first drafted like most quarterbacks get their first few years in the league. Not only was he not coached up or taught, but he was kicked aside by a jealous coach and left hanging out to dry and used up….damaged goods. But, Baker being Baker, wasn’t through just yet.The league might have been through with Baker Mayfield as a starting quarterback but Baker Mayfield wasnt through with them, by any stretch of the imagination.
Luckily there was a coach out there that knew talent when he saw it and was tough enough to take a chance on Baker, Todd Bowles. And now Bowles has developed this team, one that Tom Brady left because he saw the writing on the wall and the 2022 record of 8 wins and all the experts said 4 wins in 2023. Well coach Bowles has had 2 years of 10 win seasons and he has 2025 ready to be his year to win it all with his handpicked quarterback. Let’s see how this all goes down, because I’m betting the Bucs go ALLTHEWAYTOTHESUPERBOWLIN2025!!!

For a guy who screwed this team, its FO and its fans over he sure seems to have a whole lot of BS words for us. Anyone buying that he is sincere? Nope! Momma didn’t raise any fools that lived.

    Go Bucs!

  17. heyjude Says:

Why does Coen feel the need to stay relevant talking about the Bucs… Shouldn’t he be putting his focus and energy on rebuilding his current team. Just saying.

  18. Marky mark Says:

He got canned from Cleveland because Stefanski could not handle being yelled at by baker. Now look at the mess Stef has.
