Jason Licht: Chris Godwin Recovery “Still On Track”

Great news coming from Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht tonight.
While excited about his new toy of a first round wide receiver, Emeka Egbuka, Licht said the pick had nothing to do with Chris Godwin’s recovery from a dislocated ankle.
Licht said Godwin is “on track” and the team is hopeful he will be ready in Week 1.
Man, Joe loves the extra juice to the offense and, for tonight, Joe’s not going to cry about the Bucs’ poor pass defense not improving yet.
Hopefully, tangible news on Godwin comes out soon, like he’s running or will be ready for Day 1 of training camp.

Rookies have 5-year deals.
People who think this is about Godwin are dummies.
This is about getting a $30m/year player on a rookie deal for 5-years, and having Evans with only a year left on his deal and who knows when the clock finally catches up with him.
If you want to resign Baker in a couple of years – you need to give him guys to throw to, and you might not have Godwin and Evans still around.
People who think this is a panic pick because Godwin might not be ready to go in week 1, you’re just not very smart. Personally I’ve always assumed Godwin isn’t going to be 100% until the 2nd half of the season, but again, you’re drafting a guy for 5 years, not a few weeks.

Is it possible to (legal formation wise) line up 2 WRs in the slot? Godwin and Egbuka
FWIW – Prisco gives the pick a B- grade because of the Bucs glaring defensive needs

I’m not a talent evaluator but this guy looks very similar to Godwin. Why do we need two of the same player? I could see it if he was a speedster who stretched the field. As fans we can beat the pick to death but it seems like a best player available selection at best.

There must be 7 players on the line and 4 off the line/in backfield
The last eligible receiver on the line cannot be covered. Meaning a tight end down on the line cannot be covered by a WR out wide, WR has to be off.

I would disagree, watching the tape and reading scouting reports, they’re different style players. Godwin plays a lot bigger on tape, and I’m pretty certain he’s bulked up quite a bit and is probably playing around 220lb or so, while Double-E is closer to a traditional 205lb type of WR. I think Godwin is a lot more physical and I think he’s a bit faster as well – and I know the 40 times show guys about the same, but Godwin has always outperformed his workout numbers. Anywho, someone else said Double-E is more like a Amon-Ra St. Brown type of player, and I’d very much agree with that – and their size and play style really match-up well.
As for who plays slot – who cares. Slot is about routes, and you can run routes from wherever. Also, last year the Bucs used McMillian almost exclusively outside, so if the Bucs run 4-WR sets, you could have both Godwin and McMillan in the slot.
But having too much talent is never an issue, there’s plenty of balls to go around in this offense.

Yay! Another slot receiver. McMillan, Godwin, Shepard, E²…safe. nice guy. I’m sure he’ll have a solid career, but i don’t see the juice. Dependable, sure. Chain mover, okay. Quiet unassuming low key lvd-godwin personality, yep. But juice? He’s a good safe pick… like the girl you bring home to meet mom. Not necessarily the one turning heads at your 10th HS reunion, but she’s looking better by the 20th

I can only assume Bud Licht & Co. feel there is quality in rounds 2-3.
Feels like a succession pick. Last year Jmac for ME13, This year EE for Chris.
We need D. What we have is plainly not near enough. TB may indeed have some adjustments, but you gotta have players.

We better score 35 a game because we are going to need it! Our D couldn’t get done last year during the season or in the playoffs. Waiting to hear Licht’s explanation because the pick makes no sense.

I’m dumbfounded by those who think your first round pick has to be at the area of greatest need. That’s desperation and a recipe for busted picks.
Equally dumbfounded by those who didn’t think WR was an area of need.
Equally dumbfounded by those who don’t understand the other needs can by filled in rounds 2, 3, and 4.
Equally dumbfounded by those who think they know better than our front office.
The knee jerk negativity happens every year after round 1. It’s childish.
