Jason Licht: Baker Mayfield Said… “Something”

April 24th, 2025

Happy Bucs GM Jason Licht.

So, how did the news of the Bucs landing a receiver at No. 19 go over in the Baker Mayfield abode tonight?

Safe bet it went over very, very well. And Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht strongly hinted Mayfield had very colorful things to say when Mayfield learned of the news.

Licht was asked in his post-pick media availability to discuss the selection of receiver Emeka Egbuka of Ohio State. Licht said, yes, he texted Mayfield with the news before it broke on NFL Network.

When asked what Mayfield’s reply was, Licht smiled and said, “He said… something.”

Licht left it at that.

Joe put this quote on Twitter and one follower replied asking Joe what Licht meant by that.

Joe felt at liberty to tell the follower Licht likely was staying professional in an on-the-record setting with national and local media present to repeat what was likely pointed R-rated vocabulary from Mayfield.

Rest assured, Mayfield will rest quite well this evening. After he’s likely had a few adult beverages to celebrate his new target.

    “Let’s Fraking Go!”

  2. Buddha Says:

Egbuka is an elite blocker and has speed equal to or faster than Evans. This is a home run.

  3. Hearty Dikerson Says:

    Very informative article.

Hope I’ll eat crow, but still frustrated we spent a first rounder on a dude with limited physical traits that barely scratched 1k yards as the #1 WR on a national championship team.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Maybe Baker was telling Licht that with this pick he won’t choke in the 4th quarter of the Bucs next playoff game — that would be yuge!

  5. Bobby M. Says:

Have to wonder if Evans has indicated he’s done after this year.

  6. JTHV Says:

I said on these here comments 2 months ago the only offensive player I’d select at 19 was Godwin Jr

    Thanks, you’re welcome

lol Mayfield ssaid this “F___ yeah!”

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This pick is huge insurance if Evans or Godwin go down

  9. ChiBuc Says:

Well he’s a good blocker… necessary for the new beastS coming off the edge in Atl

    ______

    I thought the same thing.

  11. Hammerhead Says:

    A value pick. Godwin clone.
    Why he was picked.

This forever Buc fan needs Baker to act like Kurt Warner.
    Like now.

  12. ThatAintRight! Says:

It doesn’t matter none of these WRs are gonna be #1 worthy of replacing Mike Evans. They don’t have his character or skill set.

Which means TB will still need another WR who is 6-5 4.5 forty with a 40 in vertical. Oh plus ILB OLB CB1, S , and DL depth. Reddick is gone next year David is gone next year.

Probably still way better off then a lot of these teams, but still lot of holes. Makes you wonder why we’d go WR in a strong WR class and going into rd 2 we now have a ton of potentials who could’ve also fit that bill in TB. Would’ve rather had Noel or Burden. I really have a hard time believing we keep white now also. That’s probably got something to do with it also. Raschaad white gets traded for a 2nd rd pick to NE, CLE, LV, or maybe CHI, Lot of interest there. Hope an early pick so we can score defense.

Sure could use some insurance for when Dennis DOES go down or LVD DOES slow down

  14. Canabuc Says:

Lot of good defensive talent slid and will be there in round 2.
    Johnson
    Green
    Ezeriauku
    Emmanwori
    Revel
    Amos
    Schwesinger
    Watts
    Winston JR
    Morrison

    Also guys like Scourton, Campbell….
Even if we have to trade up a few spots I can’t see us leaving round 2 without a corner or safety given what’s available. Sanders will go round 2, so will at least 1 or 2 receivers before we pick.
Just pissed that the dirty birds got 2 edge rushers and elite athletes.

  15. DoooshLaRue Says:

Carson Swesinger should still be available s we hen b we pick in round 2.

We will see what they do, but generally edge rushers take a year or two to develop, and if that’s the case, it keeps the Bucs window open. Also the likelihood of hitting on 2 edge guys is pretty low, and the Falcons gave up their 1st and this years 2nd for that. Finally, the Bucs strength is the offensive line, in particular the two tackles. Obviously you still need rushers regardless of who you’re playing, but the two Falcons picks likely won’t be too big of an issue for the Bucs in the near future – which is what the Bucs are playing for right now.

That would be my pick if he’s there, either him or Winston at safety, I’d be happy with either, and I think one or both will be there.

  18. Canabuc Says:

    @Chibuc

We have Walker and everyone seems to forget Deion Jones. Finally healthy only 30 and was a probowler and looked good in limited action.
Feel we have some depth here more so then safety corner or DT and we had no receiver depth given an aging Mike whose hammy is always looking and a recovering Godwin also 30+.

Don’t love passing over defensive talent in the first but think EE was a top 2 receiver in this draft and there is still plenty of talent on the defensive side next 2 rounds.

  19. MadMax Says:

    Baker be HAPPY!!! 🙂

  20. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Don’t see any way Ezeriauku will be available in 2, but if not, Schwesinger would he awesome- a trade up candidate.

  21. Gipper Says:

Bucs will have a lot of WR’s sitting on the bench watching the defense give up clock eating drives. Totally absurd to spend a 1st round pick on a guy who will add only marginally to this year’s team. After all in most NFL games there are usually only 70 offensive plays. Ebuka is just not going to get many touches this season unless CG still hurt. If he is, curious why Licht would fork over $66Mil.

  22. JPB Says:

A rookie defender is not coming in at pick 19 and making us a SB team. EE perfect pick with aging WRs, with injuries, and we saw Bucs without either one last yr and nearly disaster, no playoff or NFC south crown! No WR depth after top 3, but now got as good 4, and as good as anyone in league! Go O, hang on D.

  23. Woodman Says:

You don’t seem to have a clue ThatAin’tRight. They ain’t trading white. The Bucs have only drafted 4 WR in the first round and this guy is a great one seems to hold alot other records at wr U at Ohio St and they probably put out more top wr’s than any college.

  24. Woodman Says:

Gipper get over your self your just one opinion bet your eyes didn’t see this coming.

  25. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

    Guaranteed Mayfield said “F YEAH!”

  26. Simeon4HOF Says:

F Yeah. We have No weakness on Offense.
    Bake Happy af.
And 4get lil diva Golden, we now have another can’t miss leader.
Can’t double team Mike as much now. Take some wear off our Stars.
    No brainer really. LFB

  27. Aqualung Says:

Oh, Santa just delivered some late night beverages. Goodie.

Tomorrow will bring the hammer and the stool pusher.

  28. Davyboy Says:

At this point, only a total, complete and utter idiot would accuse ol’ “head coach maker” of choking. An NFL coach and several people on PFF all agreed it was no doubt McMillan who didn’t run the right route depth causing the fumble. But how can an idiot change this late in his life? I mean really. As we post, Baker is fine tuning his art with the boys. This year we won’t have the 3rd best scoring offense, we will have either the second or first ranked scoring offense. Baker WILL be leading the way into the top 3rd or 4th quarterback ranking. Instead of driving to the red zone in 7 or 8 plays like we did in 2024 a lot of times, it will be in the red zone in 5 or 6 plays in 2025. Defenses will be pulling their hair out staying up all night trying to figure out ways to stop the onslaught. Dan Quinn had a good plan in the playoffs, keep the ball out of Bakers hands. But our coaches will figure out how to beat that game plan by the time 2025 rolls around and it will all be for naught. Our offense will have their way with the defenses they meet. It is going to be something to watch every Sunday. 🤔

  29. richnucsfan Says:

JL has information fans don’t. Trust him. This is his job to know what’s going on with his team.

  30. BoBojango Says:

So Egbuka reminds me of LVD but for the offense. A player that will go out every year and be a fan favorite but be overlooked by the rest the league cause he’s in Tampa.

  31. Becky Says:

I am disappointed in the pick. I don’t care about the future. I want to win now. Our receiving corp did not cost us games last year, our defense did. We lost games because we could not get a hand on an opposing quarterback and because we did not make tackles, not because we could not catch the ball. Not addressing FIRST what caused us to lose games, is foolish.

  32. Brett Says:

Everyone thinks they know more than Lichr. One of the best drafters in football.

  33. Becky Says:

I know this, allot of defensive players went in the first round and the Bucs who desperately needed to address last years defensive failures, chose an offensive player. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the problem. We did not lose a single game last year because of our passing corp. EVERY game we lost was because of our defense. Everybody addressed their main issue but us last night. Licht might be smarter than everyone else, but last night ‘s pick is questionable, because it was made for the future, and we need to win now.

  34. TheMightVH Says:

I get it… I get the pick. Still not what I would have done or thought. Swiss cheese defense with glaring holes everywhere. Why is Dean still on this roster? Do you think David is playing until he’s 40? Who’s his replacement? I sure hope Dennis’s shoulder is good to go? If not who lining up next to Lavonte? Need Safety. Need another starting CB. Need to hope Redick is a home run. We will see what happens over next 2 days but I was really annoyed with that pick.
