The argument for Bowles getting an extension is a direct parallel to the last year of Winston at QB.
Joe insanely stated he would welcome a extension for Winston and thought he had earned it.
??? Let’s not change history. Joe, at the time, said a team-friendly extension for Winston was viable and reasonable, not a franchise QB extension. Bucs officials were up for that, too, if they couldn’t land their big fish, Brady. –Joe
Imagine if you will what the state of the franchise would be if that had taken place.
Bowles at HC and Winston at QB together, ouch baby very ouch. Catastrophic is what that would have been.
The Glazers did not lock Bowles down as the HC out of fear another team would snatch him away.
Quite the opposite. BA ransomed him to the Glazers and forced their hand.
He earned nothing to gain his position.

I’m quite certain that I have never seen a sports columnist push so hard for a head coach that has such a poor record of winning.

Durango 95, I’m seeing a sports columnist push hard to explain that the Glazer family seems to love Todd Bowles and the environment he’s got rolling down at OBP. I think our Joes and Ira would be doing a major disservice to us not reporting that the owners love the unity displayed by this team led by Todd Bowles. It’s not cool that he hasn’t already signed a contract extension. Should be the first order of business. And me and the hound sure enjoyed the podcast!

Sounds like semantics, and revisionist history conveniently now, up there at the beginning. I’ll roll with BucDawg on his recollection there. Hmm.
What semantics? The website archives are here. Joe lobbied for a team-friendly extension for Jameis. Nowhere will you find that Joe ever lobbied for Jameis to get a full-blown, franchise-quarterback deal. It was beyond obvious the Bucs wouldn’t have to do that because the demand for Jameis wouldn’t be there on the market. Jameis was just coming off playing for $20 million on his fifth-year option. (You never read Joe write, “Don’t dare let him hit the market.”) Jameis was a viable option for 2020, though the Bucs were seeking better, which made all the sense in the world. –Joe

Love the podcast, especially the elevator story! Funny stuff. Can’t wait to read and hear more nuggets in the weeks to come.
Wishing the best for Devin. Maybe he found a good fit with the Raiders.
Wouldn’t mind a new stadium for the Bucs. And with a retractable roof.
Absolutely respect Bowles. Compared to many other coaches, he has done a good job and the team really likes him too. He has the locker room. His contract is up in 2027, the same time Raymond James naming rights will be in question. A lot happening at the same time. Hoping for a SB win before. Go Bucs.

Kenton Smith, one thing we do agree on is the character of Todd Bowles, the man. By all accounts he seems to be a person of tremendous character. Is that an important part of what makes a good coach? Maybe. But ultimately Todd Bowles the HC has to be judged on what he produces. Which unfortunately is not much. He almost never has his team ready to play under the national spotlight . His team hits droughts in the middle of the season. His defenses frequently collapse and costs the team victories. If not of the phenomenal performance of last years offense his season record would have been dismal. Todd Bowles the man vs the Todd Bowles the HC. That is a tale of two very different stories.

Durango 95 … ‘But ultimately Todd Bowles the HC has to be judged on what he produces. Which unfortunately is not much.’
Agree totally with your 1st sentence above. Couldn’t agree less with the 2nd one.
Bucs won the Super Bowl in 2020 thanks in huge part to our defense. It was Todd Bowles who rebuilt that defense that ranked #31 in 2018 to the defense that ranked #8 in 2020. THAT’S PRODUCTION.
Starting in that same 2020, our Bucs defense has ranked in the Top-Half of all NFL defenses every year in Points Allowed. That despite some very significant personnel turnovers that weren’t always to our advantage & some pretty significant injuries. Heaven knows it hasn’t always been pretty, but the fact is that we’ve ranked in the Top-16 for 5 years now … and made the playoffs every one of those years. THAT’S PRODUCTION too.
The TEAM seems to be improving every year, despite the fact that we’ve been undergoing some rather significant rebuilding. The team’s growing, and so is Todd Bowles the HC. I have no issue with him NOT having received a contract extension yet. Let it play out.

DR I’m not sure how you could disagree with the second sentence. It is right there for everyone to see. It is a matter of fact, not opinion. You make a good case for him being a DC. But there’s nothing there, that you wrote, that tells anyone what it is that makes him a winning HC. As a HC his defenses have been porous. I see it every Sunday. So maybe this season he turns it around and earns a contract extension. He has not done that yet, so we shall see if he can. I want him to produce a winning team as much as anyone.
April 5th, 2025 at 9:27 am
Durango95, DR wrote alot that tells everyone what it is that makes Bowles a winning head coach. PRODUCTION! How many teams have improved win totals 3 years running? Durango95, I always enjoy your posts because you obviously know football and love this team. And yes I have almost lost my mind about the pass defense. But Bowles navigating through a GOAT in his last year to an unwanted QB and maybe his last chance to a injured defense and a resigning of Wirfs, Evans, Mayfield and a center first round (all offense). He is the type coach that can turn this defense (which plays really hard) into a great defense this year.

Yes, we lost against the Broncos with a rookie QB in our house. At least they left with a sunburn!

Defense Rules
You said the Bucs have improved every year. How did the Bucs improve last season compared to the previous season?
Defense held teams to 19.1ppg in 2023 vs 22.6ppg in 2024. The offensive scoring went from 19ppg to 29ppg but the guy responsible for that is no longer with the Bucs. Add to the fact the Bucs didn’t make it as far in the playoffs looks like regression to me.
April 5th, 2025 at 11:59 am
Bee. You spelled it out for everyone to see. 2023-points against and points scored were literally the same. 2024- almost 6.5 more points per game. 10 wins versus 9. What looks like regression to you is a mirage. More like a brain fart.
April 5th, 2025 at 1:21 pm
Kenton
I also didn’t mention the turnovers. The Bucs had about the same amounts of turnovers per game both seasons but Baker lead all QBs and had more than the previous season. That’s a regression.
And yes, the Bucs improved in pig but that improvement is no longer with the team. No guarantee the team will do that again. We don’t know what the new OC will do.
No brain fart just pointing out the obvious that the team didn’t make it as far as the previous season while scoring less points.
April 5th, 2025 at 1:39 pm
Bee, you’re best leaving well enough alone. You are correct in saying that we didn’t advance in the playoffs. But we played well in that game. But any football novice knows that over a 17 game schedule improving 6.5 points per game differential is crazy good. Your last paragraph Bee suggests that brain fart may be just a little more messy than that.
