Shaq Barrett Wants To Return

November 26th, 2024

Joe is fired up, and a little confused.

Sunday’s ankle injury to Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Joe believes, appears to have sparked something at the home of 32-year-old Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.

Per NFL super-insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, Shaq wants back in the NFL immediately and has made an application to the NFL. Cut by the Bucs in the winter, Shaq signed with the Dolphins but retired before training camp ended.

The Dolphins currently hold Barrett’s rights. However, Shaq said publicly since retiring that he would only want to return for the Bucs, the team he holds dear. And he lives with his family in Tampa.

Joe realizes everything in the NFL is a fluid situation, so perhaps Shaq actually is willing to play for Miami as they make a late playoff push.

It’s past the 2024 NFL trade deadline, so Miami would have to cut Shaq to make him available to the rest of the league. And he would be subject to waivers even as a league veteran; that’s the rule for every player cut after the trade deadline.

Shaq’s agent is South Florida-based oily Drew Rosenhaus, who likely has an exact plan for Shaq which might already have a clear path for him to get back to Tampa Bay.

Why not he is good against the run and can’t be any worst than the current edge guys we have now

  2. Bucsfan Says:

Ndamakong Suh is available and ready to play as evidenced by his off season workout routine with Vita Vea. Imagine Kancey, Vea, and Suh across the frontline.

  3. Dave Pear Says:

Why not. Oh, coich. That’s why not. Would love to see Suh back also to help out the run defense. Coich wouldn’t want that either.

Both Shaq and Suh know enough to tell their mates to ignore the masturmind, and “do this instead.”

  4. Jack Sparrow Says:

dont waste time in getting him. He has lost his mojo long time ago.

  5. Todd Says:

bRING back JPP, Su and Shaq for some 2024 dessert!

    That would be classic.

  6. gofortheface30 Says:

Bucsfan – Man I miss Suh, I wish we had 10yrs of that guy. Tone setter, iron man, enforcer. Would never let this defense get soft

  7. TH Says:

There’s a reason all of these guys aren’t playing any longer…

  8. Beeej Says:

Do we know how bad JTS’s ankle is? This might have spurred Shaq’s interest

  9. Joe in Michigan Says:

I say play Braswell, and let him RUSH THE PASSER. Forget that dumb-Todd-Bowles-putting-pass-rushers-in coverage BS.

  10. Pewter Power Says:

JTS was giving no pass rush help why not bring back Shaq to replace that production haha. Knowing Bowles he’s not going to let Braswell get the experience because fighting for his coaching career

  11. D-Rome Says:

Shaq realized with our inflation adjusted prices that Christmas is going to be more expensive than he originally thought.

  12. iir8oldman Says:

Take him in a heartbeat along with Suh. Old people know what to do.(Occasionally. See Biden, Joe).

  13. PSL Bob Says:

Couldn’t hurt to give him a shot. I love Shaq, and you can be he’d give 120%.

  14. NJbucs23 Says:

    No on Shaq.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would take him back…if the fins cut him.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

Bring him back as long as he gets his old #58. Not 7.

  17. Simeon4HOF Says:

Play Braswell more .. and sign Shaq, or Simeon Rice

  18. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Shaq > Jts

  19. pewter941 Says:

    Maybe Miami just releases him.

  20. Tbbucs3 Says:

Welll Buckys already #7 so nvm.

But I would take him back as a depth piece….the only reason he fell of was due to his achillis injury….but maybe he feels he’s ready to be an impact player again now that he’s had more time to heal?

  21. Tucker Says:

They will get the same production with what they have now, love Shaq but he isnt what he was none of the older teammates are suh or jpp. It’s nice to remember what they were but they aren’t in the league for a reason.

  22. RVATom Says:

Well, if it theoretically took Calijah Kancey till now to be in game shape then Shaq should be good about a week after the end of the season 🤣

  23. Simeon4HOF Says:

Trade Logan Hall for his rights

  24. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

If we don’t bring back Shaq, we are stupid.

He was still recovering from an injury his last year here.

  25. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

In all honesty, we are stupid if we don’t sign Shaq, Suh, & JPP immediately.

They are all still training and in good shape and could help us tremendously on the field and in spirit.

It’s ridiculous. What, all of a sudden we’re too good of a team for those guys?!??

    HA! That’s laughable and ridiculous!

  26. Dave Pear Says:

[Nah man, even this is too far. Joe knows you don’t like Todd Bowles. No need to go this far. — Joe]

  27. Lightningvinny Says:

    Let’s do it!!!

  28. Ed Says:

This talk is semi-crazy. These are retired players. What makes anyone think they are in football shape to be able to rush the passer. Even at his age Suh could be a run stopper but the other guys are pass rushers and they just don’t have the juice to step in off the sofa and play in the NFL.

  29. Bucs4Ever Says:

We need to stop living in the past.

    Father time is undefeated.

  30. Pelsbuc61 Says:

JTS will no longer be a Buc after this season. Why not see what we have with Watts and Ramirez. If he clears waivers, can’t hurt to bring in Shaq for depth. This defense needs all the help it can get.

  31. Jmarkbuc Says:

    He’d pull a hammy three plays into a game…

  32. Weston Says:

Hey, if any of these retired guys ACTUALLY have a few games left in the tank, and are willing to come at a fair price… then I love it. Picking up the vets toward the end of a season makes a lot of sense. Less money, less milage

  33. Buc4evr Says:

I would give Shaq a chance. At the very least he would be in the rotation. Question is, what would it take, a six or seventh round pick?

  34. adam from ny Says:

    “F” it……bring back the shaq-meister !

we must improve this defense, while going on a run…

    otherwise the season is over…

and shaq either has fresh legs or out of shape legs at this point…

and he’s not tired and banged up like most of the league at this point from a long season

  35. Joe in Michigan Says:

Now if Shaq can be the Bucs Head Coach, I’d be for that. I think he’d know to LET THE PASS RUSHERS ACTUALLY RUSH THE QB, AND NOT DROP BACK IN COVERAGE.

  36. Zoocomics Says:

After seeing the mess made this season from the defense, a lot of it is Bowles scheming and moving players in and out of coverages that aren’t as suited physically to do so… we underestimated how Shaq was perfectly built for Bowles defense. Bowles has a type, case in point, look at our OLB backup room, Ramirez and Watts specifically, all undersized, but most likely more mobile in drop-back coverage than bigger guys like Braswell, Nelson. You just hope they can develop a pass rush at the NFL level. Shaq was undersized as a 4-3 DE, but athletic and he was excellent at setting the edge in the run game. The only problem at his size that comes with age is the lack of burst/speed to rush the passer, that’s what we saw in his last year at Tampa. Whoever wasn’t paying attention last season when Shaq went out with an injury and JTS came in to start, there was a significant drop off defensive line play. Situationally, I could see Shaq bringing some juice vs being an every down guy. It would be great to see him in Tampa again for this late run.

  37. Mike Johnson Says:

Even at 75%, Shaq is twice as good as JTS. And that is a FACT.

  38. A Bucs Fan Says:

56 pressures last year coming off an Achilles injury. I’ll take a fresh Shaq for a post-season push!

  39. A Bucs Fan Says:

I just read and a bunch of insiders on X say he’s willing to play for the Dolphins….
    Booo.

  40. Usfbuc Says:

If Miami cut him I don’t see anything wrong with seeing if he is ready to play. Hell there are six games still he might put up a better stat line than JTS.

  41. Dave Pear Says:

I like the dude. He’s just an abysmal head coach who runs a highly ineffective defense. The data support this as fact. Losing head coach with two NFL teams. Has a bottom feeding defense when that’s supposed to be his thing. Proves to be among the worst at situational football. Players don’t know their assignments. Every. Week.

    The truth hurts.

  42. Swanny Says:

Wow…not only do we get stupid nick names, now we’re mocking ethnic dialects? Keepin’ it classy aren’t we?

  43. orlbucfan Says:

Yeah, and we really need a 32 yo on our defense. Same as 43 yo on offense. I could care less about the Stupid Bowl. It will probably be played in Monte Carlo. If Bowles and Licht gives thumbs-up, guess this fan will go for it.

  44. David Says:

Would love it!!! Much better than JTS and would be a great leader for Yaya!

  45. heyjude Says:

I am late to the good news and would love for this to happen. Shaq’s home is right here with the Bucs. It would be great to have him come back here.

  46. Eckwood Says:

Bringing him back just for the effort he gives every play would be a boost !!
JTS effort level is about half of SB
