Sacks Really Are Drive Killers For Bucs Offense

In the summer of 2023, handicapper turned stathead Warren Sharp documented how, over a five-year period, sacks absolutely destroyed offensive drives.
The percentage of offensive drives that ended in touchdowns without a sack was dramatically higher than drives that resulted in a touchdown despite a sack.
Simply put, if a defense can put a quarterback on the ground, the odds were great that drive either ended in a punt or perhaps a field goal attempt.
And folks actually wonder why Joe is so obsessed with an edge rush. Can you imagine?
Well, the Bucs offense is walking, living proof how a sack can completely eff up a drive. And yes, this intel comes from Sharp Football Analysis.
Tampa Bay averages 3.06 points per drive on possessions without a sack (2nd in the NFL) compared to 0.55 points per drive with a sack (30th).
Joe isn’t sweating this stat this week. The Stinking Panthers have a positively miserable pass rush. The Bucs, playing a team last week with three strong pass rushers, didn’t allow a sack all day as Baker Mayfield only got hit twice.
Joe is expecting the Bucs to put up a bunch of points tomorrow.

The Joe’s have correctly been pointing this out for years now. I’ve recently been glancing at the “way too early” mock drafts. I openly laugh when I see the Bucs “draft” an interior lineman in the first round when a perfectly good edge rusher is still on the board.

That is for all teams everywhere. That is why Todd should just bring the heat and blitz on a still shaky qB Bryce who is short and does not have Kyle Murrys speed. Maybe not so much on Dalton who can read the blitz.

I meant a great one at DE/OLB. Le Roy Selmon was the greatest pick. Simeon Rice and Jason Pierre-Paul were acquired in trades. We have not done well in the first two rounds overall as a franchise. JTS is our latest disappointment. Too early to tell about Braswell.

Great job by the O-line last week against a really good D-line.
It was nice to see Vita and Kancey dominating inside… With more production from the edge we’d be wreaking havoc. Still hopeful Yaya will start getting more finishes and Braswell will start showing up. 🤞🏼

Like I said, Canales knows who the better Defense is, even if the usual hot airhead crowd on here doesn’t. I don’t see BM worried about sacks.

We are currently ranked #9 in sacks for those who are interested.
3.7 sacks per game in our last 3 games.

We sell out to blitz at one of the highest rates in the league only to give up a 109.8 passer rating. Sacks we’re getting are at too high a cost. We need some better players and a better scheme. 60 mil in dead cap hamstrings the team.
