Bruce Arians Said He Mostly Stays Away From Bucs For A Reason

November 14th, 2024

Current status with Bucs.

On the list of Buccaneers front office personnel on the team’s website, a few names down below Jason Licht, Mike Greenberg and John Spytek, is a name familiar to virtually all Bucs fans.

That would be Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians. His title is “senior advisor to the general manager,” as it has been since he stepped down as head coach in the spring of 2022.

But Arians’ is less involved with the Bucs than he was.

Arians refers to his current status with the Bucs as “retired-ish.” That wasn’t the case his first year after resigning. Back then he was often at One Buc Palace, including Bucs practices and on the sidelines at games.

No more.

Recently on the “Pardon My Take” podcast with Big Cat and PFT Commenter of Barstool Sports, Arians explained his current Bucs status.

Arians might be heard from at One Buc Palace but rarely seen.

“After the first year, I went to practice every day, I went to the games,” said Arians, who periodically pops up for games at The Licht House. “Had that little incident down in New Orleans where I wasn’t on the sidelines anymore” after a hassle with Marshon Lattimore.

Like Arians has said before, he thought he was a distraction.

“I felt I was around too much,” Arians said. “I had guys looking at me and not Todd. I gave the team to Todd. ‘It’s your team, let’s go.’

“So I went to the lake the last couple of years. I had no idea golf in the fall was so much fun, man. It’s pretty cool.”

Arians lives on the waterfront at Lake Oconee in Georgia, about halfway between Atlanta and Augusta, right down the road from Athens.

It’s a retirement community that’s sort of The Villages for football coaches and a sprinkling of players. Some of Arians neighbors include Kirby Smart, Shane Beamer, James Franklin, Dan Mullen, George O’Leary, Frank Beamer, Jim Grobe, Rich Rodriguez, Todd Grantham and Ralph Friedgen. Even Ben Roethlisberger lives near Arians, his old offensive coordinator with the Steelers.

If Arians isn’t at a Bucs game, his home setup includes four TVs piping in games on Sundays.

“I love the game,” Arians said. “Hate not being a part of it, but it was time for me to go.”

We miss him on the sideline for sure. Go BUCS

  2. bucnjim Says:

You have to miss the intensity on the sideline that Arians brought! WTF was that would come out of his mouth on several occasions when a player would mess up. He would hold these guys accountable during the game not in private meetings. In his years as a head coach he would definitely get the most our of his players.

  3. Weebs10 Says:

Wish he had never stepped down!

  4. Ds Says:

I miss BA great leader of men

  5. J Says:

BA was a better evaluator of talent

  6. Evo Says:

If they let Bowles go.. I hope he comes back and is a part of the team again. We miss is mentality around the players. The team hasn’t had that same edge.

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

With his heart issues his body physically can’t take the stress of coaching anymore. Thank you for the SB BA!

  8. Bucsfan Says:

You got a Superbowl from him , leave the old guy alone and let him play golf.

  9. First Name Greatest Says:

BA is to blame for handing things over to Todd Blows vs the Bucs hiring the best available coach. BA was great here but his assistants were awful he must’ve been the glue holding them up.

The assistants without Arians are just bad coaches. It’s like they learned nothing from BA

  10. JimBobBuc Says:

BA coached to win. Bowles coaches to not lose. Too bad BA can’t be in Bowles ear during end of game decisions.

  11. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    BEST BUCS COACH EVER.

  12. StormyInFl Says:

“I gave the team to Todd.”

    Exactly. Gifted, not earned.

  13. Durango 95 Says:

As long as Bowles is the HC of this team it will forever be treading water. It’s time that some folks face that reality. At the end of the season he needs to be terminated. Regardless of how many upcoming games they win. There is no upside.

    Yes he is.

  15. heyjude Says:

Bruce is one of the best! So glad to hear he is enjoying life now. Well deserved.

  16. Upstate NY BUC Says:

I’m the last one to say or admit this!!! let’s give Bowles his fair shot rest of the year!! I’m sure Arians gave Mr. Licht a hearty and honest advice on what he really thinks of this defense so far this year!! Crazier things have happen, I’ll be in the end zone for that Giants game watching very carefully. Go Bucs.

  17. NJbucs23 Says:

Miss you Bruce. Man I loved your no no sense approach. I use it worth coaching basketball.

  18. JReel Buc Says:

Go from a passionate Coach to one with no emotion. Can’t stand the Bowles and the Bellichick style of stoic sage. Flat aloof demeaner only works of your winning otherwise you look like a moron.

  19. Jerseybuc Says:

Thanks bruce for leaving us Bucs fans with radio running things

  20. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

It’s a shame that BA got ran off the sidelines/booth a couple seasons ago. We could’ve still had him heavily involved in coaching guys up, but the stupid national media said he was trying to steal some of the shine from the rest of the coaching staff and made it a weird race thing and forced BA to vacate the spotlight entirely… It was stupid race-baiting bullying by the media and the Bucs are lesser for it.

    Such a shame.

  21. Pewter Power Says:

I loved BA until he gave away the team to Bowles. Now all fans can expect is perennial mediocrity

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He’s not healthy enough to coach anymore…but he can secretly consult on finding a new head coach!

  23. BallHawk75 Says:

Guys were looking at him instead of Bowles.

That tells you everything you need to know.

Arians played to win, no risk it no biscuit.

Bowels plays to lose by one score and make excuses.

That first and goal three and out was a gut punch vs the 49ers.

TB zero had his hands all over that one.

Not sure what more the Glazers need to see.

  24. D Cone Says:

” I gave the Team to Todd” That’s usually does not end well.

  25. Bill Says:

We miss your leadership and calling it like it is when it happens not hiding your displeasure with your team and the refs.

  26. Bosch Says:

As StormyinFL and D cone posted, the quote “I gave the team to Todd” speaks volumes. It is more like he saddled the team with Bowles and at least a half decade of mediocrity. Arians should NOT be inducted into the Ring of Honor.

  27. Permanently Moderated Says:

I’m glad he’s doing well. The Bucs are not.

  28. Jeffs grandpa Says:

This team is 7-3 6-4 with BA in charge

  29. StickinUp4Centers Says:

“The assistants without Arians are just bad coaches. It’s like they learned nothing from BA”

The assistants didn’t have to do much for a team that had Tom Brady, Gronk, AB, Evans, Godwin, JPP, Suh etc

  30. #1bucsfan Says:

Miss him cussin players ,caches n refs out. Team did play tougher with BA

  31. garro Says:

Hmm Arians and Coen with a new DC? Arians can sit back and relax while Coen does the heavy lifting and gving Coen the HC in waiting title? I know it’s not No risk it …But still…

Bowles is one loss from oblivion.

Gonna have to retool the Defense either way. What we got is not cutting it.
Too many failed draft picks on that side of the ball. Hall, Diva, JTS, SMB, Dean (sorry but I calls em like I sees em) Nelson is the only dude left from the 2019 class. Vea, although a great player could have been soo much more with some help around him…Sad. These are just the top end draft picks prior to the last two years. Not gonna go back to VH3. Which still stings.

    Go Bucs!

  32. I hate the cowboys Says:

    No riskit
    No biskit
