Chase Edmonds Addresses The Baker Mayfield “Prickness”

March 21st, 2024

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manger Jason Licht launched a lot of conversation with his unusual description of Baker Mayfield last week.

People want answers.

One of them is Go Long founder and writer Tyler Dunne.

He had a conversation with Bucs running back Chase Edmonds recently and asked for clarification.

In Tampa, you guys turned it on and went on a run. What sparked that? And Baker Mayfield, what’s he like as a quarterback? Your GM said he’s a 10 on the “prick” scale.

Edmonds: We love “Bake,” man. Man and I think the cool thing to see about Bake is Bake didn’t come in like that. Bake came in to himself just trying to earn everybody’s respect and just work as hard as he could work every single day and be the best quarterback that he could be every single day. And I think that was really the cool thing to see the development of him getting back to Baker Mayfield and who you saw when he was at Cleveland, when he was at Oklahoma — that charismatic, that prickness, that edge to him — I think that really started to inspire the team. We started to get the edge off of that. Defense started playing well. Offense started playing well, started running the ball well. And it was just one of those things where we’re 4-7. Our backs were against the wall. People don’t look at it like this, be like we had a team full of a lot of guys, I’m not going to necessarily say with “backs against the wall,” but looking to prove something.

Joe liked how Edmonds said Mayfield becoming Baker Mayfield “really started to inspire the team.” It sounds like something that could carry over to the 2024 season and enhance the hard-working, almost-angry vibe that’s becoming the identity at One Buc Palace.

  1. Beeej Says:

Pfft. Baker prolly paid them to say that. The man is without scruples

  2. Cardiac kidz Says:

Better start backing Baker, he’s OUR QB like it or not for the next 2 years. He’s not my first pick but he darn sure brings IT to the line of scrimmage.
Last year he played the whole season, that’s really hard to do in the NFL. We made the playoffs, not sure what more it takes to be a backer of Baker.

  3. D Cone Says:

Looks like he’s gotten inside everyone in the locker room. One way or another.
    Good for Morale I suppose.

  4. Bucfan1988 Says:

I still have my doubts about Baker due to his inconsistency, I will admit it.

One thing that I think we will all agree with, is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one of the best locker rooms in the entire NFL.

It seems like there is so much chemistry in the locker room, and these guys play hard hard for one another. Now that DW45 and his attitude is gone, I expect the locker room to get even closer now

  5. Conner50 Says:

We get it Joe everyone on the team love baker and gravitates towards him don’t gotta write 100 articles backing it

  6. ModHairKen Says:

Without scruples? Where is that coming from?

Inconsistency? Which games? Houston and Atlanta with a lead and less than 2 minutes? How about the drops, the poor pass protection, the invisible TE, the abysmal running game? Maybe that played a role.

Get on board, losers. He’s the QB for now. You can cry to your daddies or go cheer for the Saints or Falcons. Maybe the team whose owner throws drinks on fans and fires a coach every year.

One of these days you will have something to complain about. Maybe when Baker throws his next interception? It will give your life new meaning.

  8. Conner50 Says:

    @ModHairKen
Chill out dude it’s ok to say Baker was inconsistent because he was. Yes the new coordinator was as well, and no good interior blocking but regardless he was inconsistent.

  9. Conner50 Says:

    @Gipper
I’m sure he will throw plenty more interceptions in his career and I’ll let you know each time don’t you worry. Now that I know you guys are easily triggered about anything said about baker

  10. KB Bucs Says:

What else are they going to write about? Not having a new edge rusher yet (dead horse)?
At least it’s not another mock draft that will never play out that way or a mock guessing the Bucs will draft an interior lineman first pick… which would be sooooo stupid when an edge would be worthy of that first round (hopefully… Bucs have a sad history when picking first round DE/OLBs… maybe 2024 will change that). If they draft like last season, would be very satisfying as far as getting value at each pick including many on the undrafted signings. Licht can find linemen in round 2 like he’s done with Marpet, Kappa and Goedeke. If this is as deep an OL draft as they’ve reported, the 2 third rounders could be helpful in getting OL help. Best available player aside, would love to see an edge rusher in first round and 2 interior O-linemen picked somewhere in round 2 & 3… but that’s just me.

  11. BakerFan Says:

The problem is with most of you Baker Haters (aka Butthole Brigade), is when something does go bad like an interception it makes you smile and be happy. It get a feeling I told you so on interceptions and pissed off that he completed a touchdown pass. SAD

  13. Ken Says:

How do the Bucs not have a number 10 jersey in their store with the name “Prick” on the back?

  14. JustVisiting Says:

Anyone who doesn’t believe that leadership translates to wins, especially as it relates to football QBs, is just detached from reality.

  15. Beeej Says:

Are you saying that Baker does not have his own office and travel separately from the team?

  16. Citrus County Says:

Baker Mayfield is the Bucs version of Drew Brees. I think he will be our QB for the next 6-10 years. I made this prediction a year ago.

  17. JD Still Says:

This has turned into nothing but a pro Mayfield propaganda website, run by Mayfield sycophants, full of sound and fury , signifying nothing, how about something, anything about what is being done to improve the team!

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

The Team loves Mayfield. The Greatest Buc QB of all time.
Rumor has it the Bucs are already restructuring is contract to add cap space, and extent Mayfield by 3 additional years.
It also includes a huge supply of Tequlia.

So glad we have a real Man as our Qb.
Not some unpopular, girly man. Like, say, Kyle Trask

  19. Conner50 Says:

    @Bakerfan
The problem with you Baker soldiers is that yall are so easily triggered about any criticism or input of what he could improve on. You guys take it so defensive and start name calling and get bent out of shape

  20. BucU Says:

I wish Licht chose another statement at the presser. The prick thing was unnecessary.

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

SHUT UP CONNOR, THATS NOT TRUE,!!
    Lol

Learn how to play golf. You need to find something to do to alleviate your Mayfield negativity. Not “triggered” , more amused that you and a few others think you know more than ME, Jason Licht, Tristan Wirfs and a cast of hundreds.

  23. JD Still Says:

Capt Tim: LOL! Well You guys are going to need all that tequila ,and more , when the drugs wear off and you realize you sold the farm, for fifty million guaranteed dollars , to an inconsistent, mediocre , sub.500 win journeyman quarterback , who made it into the playoffs thanks to our great kicker having to be counted upon , to beat the worst team in professional football , with no thanks to Mayfield , and now you have to face a much tougher schedule this year , with, (so far), a weaker team , so drink up,( tequila does dull the memory if I remember correctly).

  24. chickster Says:

Baker will only be here until next year hope for the best .Thats it

  25. Conner50 Says:

    @Capt.Tim
See the baker posse strikes again with anger instead of logical reasoning.

  26. Conner50 Says:

    @Gipper
Amused lmao oh the irony. I’m amused every time I come on this site and see all you guys calling people who say the slightest thing off about baker a member of a cult of trask. You guys are so soft it’s unreal, fyi I like Baker just won’t blow things out of proportion like you or others saying he’s been consistent and took us to the playoffs by himself

  27. Tb bolts Says:

Joebakerfan is so offended on bakeys behalf he’s still posting articles on this meaningless comment. What an absolute jock washer you are “joe”

  28. Tony marks Says:

    Conner50 Says:

I’m sure he will throw plenty more interceptions in his career and I’ll let you know each time don’t you worry. Now that I know you guys are easily triggered about anything said about baker

Thats right folks. He wrote that after clearly being triggered by this article.

Baker haters = zero self awareness.

btw we don’t care about what you let us know. We will actually be watching our QB1 but we’ll see about the PineCam for you guys to watch Kylie

  29. Capt.Tim Says:

    JD,
Sir, I watched this team refuse to sign a Qb who took them to the NFC championship, even though he was asking for peanuts.
Then, to replace him- they signed Jack” the Throwing Samoan” Thompson.
Who was singularly the most inaccurate person throwing a football Ive ever seen.
I was in the big Sombrero, watching him warm up. He tried to throw a pass to the side line- and hit a guy carrying food in the stands.
Ive had girls at the beach, in bikinis, throw more accurate passes.

Ive learned one thing. You DONT LET QBS GO THAT WIN YOU PLAYOFF GAMES!!

How many of the 29 Quarterbacks the Bucs have drafted- have won te Bucs a playoff game?
    NONE ZILTCH NADA NUNKA

Im sure you had some great plan, about drafting some lame rookie, or starting noodle arm Kyle

BUT FORGET IT. IT DOESNT WORK. ITS NEVER WORKED.
NOW, remove your head from your nether regions, and run down and buy yourself a Baker Mayfield Bucs jersey. You probably wear either a small or a 6xl.
Put it on. Then drop to your knees, and thank God we have a great QB in Tampa!

    Lmao

  30. Crickett Baker Says:

I remember once (think it was Green Bay) Brady threw THREE interceptions in one game. The defense held up and GB didn’t get any points from them.

  31. Rook Says:

Cut Trask, trade Trask, just get him out of here. His services are no longer required.

  32. Capt.Tim Says:

CONNOR- QUIT ACCUSING US MAYFIELD FANS OF BEING ANGRY, YOU @$#*#!!!!!
    Lol

If you had to read all the regurgitated ignorance from the Trask lovers, youd be angry too!

    You $#@&# &$@#$!!

  33. Duane in Sanford Says:

Baker plays with an edge because he wants to be great. He had to pay the cost to be the boss. The people in the locker room got to see that 24/7 and its hard to not recognize. He is the ultimate underdog and a tough competitor. Perfect fit for our franchise. He also clearly moves the needle.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

Conner…you’re right… triggered every single one of them.

  35. Don'tBmad Says:

Been being the usual loser he is

  36. Conner50 Says:

    @Tony Marks
Not triggered just said that we all get it if you knew how to read. Also nobody cares about what you have to say either but here you are putting in your two cents per usual when your takes are as bad as Stephen a smith

  37. Buc1987 Says:

Ya know there’s an actual Facebook page out there called Baker Mayfield Sucks.

  38. Conner50 Says:

    @Buc1987
Yea their all soft and are out of touch with reality

  39. Biggun Says:

“him getting back to Baker Mayfield and who you saw when he was at Cleveland, when he was at Oklahoma — that charismatic, that prickness, that edge to him”

That’s what the boss meant, when he said what he said!

  40. Bucben61 Says:

ConnOr 50…I know I called you a dumbass on another thread here….was going to call you a dumbass on this thread but I think after reading thru the comments folks here have pretty much figured out you are a dumbass so there’s no reason for me to call you a dumbass but I just can’t help myself…you sir are a dumbass

I just started one that says buc1987 suck….lmao

  42. SenileSenior Says:

As a Buc fan l will just say if Baker is a prick, he’s our prick. Scruples have to do with ethics or morals. I see nothing wrong with his ethics substantially. He has grit and is a real footballer.

    Go Bucs!

  43. Buc1987 Says:

Bucben61<~~~~~~the MOST triggered one of the bunch.

Must be swinging on Mayfield's nut sack by now.

  44. JD Still Says:

Tim: No thanks I don’t need a Mayfield Jersey , there will be plenty available at Goodwilll later in the fall, but I do commend you on your irrational , unfounded loyalty to a lost cause, but who knows , maybe Mayfield is that illusive never before captured , inconsistent, sub.500 career win, journeyman , unicorn , quarterback , who leads his team to a SuperBowl , but I would not have bet 50 million guaranteed dollars on it to the detriment of the team I support and have supported from the beginning.

  45. Olboy Says:

ffs, is this going to be the talking point for him this year? Last year it was moxie, which, is what some hope to trip into after their label has expired.
They’ll say anything to sell average. Like a used car salesman

  46. Conner50 Says:

    @Bucben61
Your the dumbass that got super offended for me just saying that he was inconsistent and threw the lions game with the interception. Lmao you really give football fans a good look don’t you.. grow up kid

  47. Bucben61 Says:

Bucs are trying to trade Kyle Trask for a Wendy’s $5 biggie bag but can’t find a trade partner….that should get the traskateers fired up

  48. Capt.Tim Says:

    JDstill says,
    “ I wouldnt bet 50 mil on it . . ,”
    I imagine not! 50 mil?
Youve never had $50 to bet! Lmao.
Dont worry,Ill be at the Hard rock tomorrow. Ill drop $50 on Mayfield getting us to the SuperBowl
And if I win- Ill tell ya how I spent it! .

If its enough to pay the bar tab, I’ll even chip in a buy you that Mayfield Jersey!
Ill get one that says “Mayfield Rules!”
‘Cause thats what friends are for.

When he win the Superbowl- you gonna wear It?

  49. Bucben61 Says:

I asked in in another thread ConnOr 50…who should be starting QB for the bucs…who ConnOr 50…who

  50. Bucben61 Says:

ConnOr 50 says Mayfield needs to be better in the playoffs

Baker Mayfield has a passer rating of 100.4 with 1,153 yards, 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 4 games in the playoffs in his career.

    You decide

  51. Atlbuc28 Says:

Lmbo! I actually miss the stuff “the Realist” posted all those years.. Hell i even miss DR and his posts. At least those guys truley understood football. With all of these new ( since Brady) fans have came aboard , the fantasy football GMs and Baker Haters sure have spiced things up…cough cogh Conner cough All i know is ! In my area in the stadium the Baker jerseys are all over the place. Knowing fans have moved on from the last QB and the back up. LFB

  52. Conner50 Says:

    @Bucben61
Your mentally challenged I can tell so I’m just gonna let you rant on and on have fun kid

  53. Bucben61 Says:

What’s the matter ConnOr 50….don’t you believe in stats…they are real…anyone can Google them…you make moronic statements

  54. ReturnGrudenToRing Says:

Its obvious some of the posters here were not around when the Bucs would get rid of QB’s who would then go win a super bowl with another team.

  55. Conner50 Says:

The thread was about being better and winning more playoff games and I said in order to do that don’t turn the ball over with your last drive left… yea that’s real moronic. You got issues

  56. Bucben61 Says:

No this thread was not about being better and winning more playoff games…it was about chase Edmonds take on Baker and how the team rallys around him but spoken like a true Baker hater…you don’t even know what reality is

  57. JD Still Says:

Tim: Keep your money , I don’t want it , I got a feeling You need it more than I do.

  58. TampaTony13 Says:

Man there’s more cackling hens in this house than at a feminist rally.
I thought this was a football forum, not a PMS convention.
I get it some of y’all sucking Bakers dong and some of y’all sucking Tracks ding.
Let’s be realistic, none of you are Nostradamus. Baker is a hl.kf a lot better than Winston or any of the other garbage we’ve had. With few exceptions (The GOAT) he’s been pretty damn good. He has undeniable heart and he probably had the worst O-line last year that the Bucs have had in decades. Not to mention most all of the receivers including Mike and Chris had buttered gloves for a vast majority of the season. Let’s not forget that Canales’s offense was so basic and predictable that other teams defenses were caught on camera saying that out loud. Honestly, we are better off without him and the Panthers can deal with his inability to manage a game and predictable play calling. Hell Bowles is bad enough managing a game and timeouts all by himself, he needs no help.

Get your girly drama stuff out of your system and start actually discussing football like Men. Anyone have anything constructive to say? Thoughts on letting Moore go? What are your thoughts on picking the best players on the board (ala moneyball) during the draft as opposed to filling voids with young inexperienced players?

Anyways, it’s painful watching grown ass men bickering like school girls on here.
Save the drama for the women’s day magazine forums or hair and nail salons or wherever the bitche$ spend their time bickering.

  59. Bucben61 Says:

JD still glad to see you and your fellow Baker haters enjoyed this past season….amazing that all that the bucs accomplished this past season none of you haters can do anything but rant and bitch….us real fans we enjoyed the season we win our division…we win a playoff game…we accomplished amazing things are even brighter days are ahead….Capt. Tim offered to buy you a jersey….nope…id rather buy you a one way ticket out of town with your hater buddies…. absolutely amazing season and all I hear is bitching and moaning about Baker…take a hike

  60. Capt.Tim Says:

    JD,
    Its probably just as well.
Baker Mayfield jerseys are for WINNERS!
Real men who WIN buy and wear those jerseys.

Try putting those on some lil millennials like you and Connor- they’d pop right off!
Besides, they smell like Tequila, not Chardonnay
Probably make your lil tummies upset!

  61. JD Still Says:

Bucben61: Here’s a clue, take a look at the posts here , see who is it mentioning hate and spewing childish insults instead of engaging in rational discussion , ( I can not even remember seeing any “hate” comments about Mayfield , just dissatisfaction with his performance, ( it is just a game after all), and when those who are not enthralled with Mayfield give the reasons why , actual detailed point by point lists of what is perceived to be his shortcomings, what are your well thought out and oh so enlightening counter points? Don’t say nuthin bad bout Baker ! You hater! Followed by a string of expletives and personal insults . So, if you are not paid gaslighters , Why not, just for a change , try to engage in sane , rational discourse, maybe then we can actually learn some things.

  62. Farmer Says:

Why are people so upset about this story? Lots of Saints fans posing as Bucs fans me thinks!

  63. Conner50 Says:

    Capt Tim
Your balls ain’t even dropped yet but you talk about other guys manhood a lot don’t you

  64. Bucben61 Says:

JD still…you aren’t trying to have an intelligent conversation…all you want to do is bitch gripe and complain about Baker…nothing positive to say

  65. Bake n Your Face Says:

How often do you thank God in front of the whole world “mr. Scrupples” beeej ?
    ..that’s what I thought..

  66. vadertime Says:

Baker proved me wrong. At the beginning of the season, at least through the first 6 games or so, I did not think he was the future QB for Tampa. However, down the stretch, especially after beating Philly, I was proved wrong. I hope he has a productive and aspirational career in Tampa. I’ll just be happy if we make it into the playoffs every year. Go Bucs.

  67. Critmark Says:

Whenever I need a dose of extremism, all I need to do is click on a Baker article here and here it is, on full display. The Baker Haters and the Baker Boys pointing out completely opposite opinions, often with cherry picked numbers to support their view. Thanks for the entertainment.

My opinion is he is a good, but not great QB. Sometimes he can’t overcome the teams deficiencies and sometimes it is on him, just as sometimes he gets it done despite the cards he is dealt. Welcome to the NFL.

But he does win in the playoffs. Cousins has ONE playoff win in 12 years. Lamar has the same # of wins as Baker, even playing on a better team and 2 MVPs. Prescott has the same despite winning double digit regular season games year after year.

Just to throw some more fuel on the fire, I went back and looked at how many teams won more than 9 games with the worst running game in the league over the past 20 years. It only happened twice. In 2020 the Steelers did it, and lost in the first round to who, Baker and the Browns. Then in 2009 Indy did it and they went to the SB behind Peyton Manning, losing to the saints. And no, Baker is not in the same class as Manning.

  68. Ralph Cramden Says:

Scruples: a feeling of doubt or hesitation with regard to the morality or propriety of a course of action.

Baker and Emily Mayfield run a foundation with the stated goal to “provide programs, scholarships and philanthropic opportunities to help others tackle life’s challenges in order to BE the best version of themselves.” They run events which will benefit early childhood literacy.

DeShaun Watson had to pay off 25 low income masseuse girls in Houston in civil cases claiming sexual harassment. Each of the women claimed that Watson demanded more than a back rub.

    Which man has scruples?

  69. Esteban85 Says:

Oh boy gotta love all the revisionist historians on this comment page. Yes our kicker is the only one who scored against a decent defense in Carolina. Fact is we won the damn game and I think that’s the point. We won the south and we beat the mighty seagulls in the playoffs at home. Baker plays a certain style where I didn’t expect him to play every game because of it, but the fact that he gritted that last game out and won shows me all I need to see. He’s a G and willing to throw his body into the mix and risk everything to win a damn ballgame.

  70. Kenny Ray Says:

Listen, I see these comments about “inconsistent”, and it really makes me wonder about the football IQ of someone that would state that Baker is “inconsistent” Baker was, through the playoffs one of the top 10 QB’s in the NFL. There are 32 teams, so you do the math here…. Bottom line, Baker had one of the highest passing percentages in the NFL last year, and was even better in the playoffs – when it counts! And, Baker had a higher completions percentage than the previous TB QB, who retired as the best QB ever. So, maybe you are holding Baker to a standard of expectation that’s not realistic.
