Carlton Davis Reacts

March 13th, 2024

Recently traded Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis was introduced to Detroit Lions media today.

The Bucs dumped a “Gravedigger” two days ago and added one today.

The departed one, former Bucs No. 1 cornerback Carlton Davis, met with the Detroit media this afternoon. Joe enjoyed the fun with a plate of Hooters wings and an ice cold Big Storm beer (Bromosa).

Some highlights:

*”You about to get a lock down corner,” Davis told Lions media. “You about to be able to have one side just like, you know, unavailable. That’s what I do. I’m here to take out the No. 1 receiver on any team.”

*A reporter asked Davis about his lockdown status and Davis told a reporter to “turn on the film” and watch him in man-to-man coverage on the NFL’s top receivers. “Not when I’m zone,” he added with emphasis. The reporter asked Davis to name a game in which he was a lockdown guy. Davis replied by asking, “What year?” The reporter said, “last year,” and David painfully struggled to name one game and didn’t.

* Davis called the trade to Detriot “a shock, just being [in Tampa] for six years, being a natural born Floridian myself. You know, it was a shock just to get the call.”

*Davis says going to a team like the Lions makes him excited and gives him hope. He added that he sees similariaties between the Lions and the Bucs of a few years ago except with “younger players.”

*The Lions fan base is more impressive than Tampa’s, Davis said, though he noted the Bucs have good fans.

Oh he almost walked the plank on that Tampa fanbase comment. But, I don’t blame him. He’s right.

  2. Matt Says:

He had some lockdown games but those are far and few between the past few years. Oh well good luck to him.

  3. Trask To The Future Says:

Him being a lockdown corner is a MYTH. Dude struggled all the time. Gave up many critical 3rd down conversions.

One of the most overrated Bucs defensive backs ever. He and Dean are very overrated.

Thankfully we no longer have to see his dangling mouth piece and overhyped cover skills again.

Good trade last year of his contract .

  7. Lord Cornelius Says:

I mean I prefer corners that can be shut down man cover corners but also play some zone as needed. You can’t pigeon hole the entire defense into needing to play man coverage every play or you become predictable and Bowles loves exotic blitzes all day.

Corner play in general seems to be so up and down in the NFL year to year. You don’t see the same consistency as you see with elite WR’s, LB”s and lineman (defense/offense). Hell even Safety play seems more consistent and predicatble than corners.

  8. Hearty Dikerson Says:

lol yep, be careful what you wish for, Carlton. If Detroit fans put on that Houston tape they’ll be collectively throwing up in their mouths.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

Takes half the field, half a season.

I like Davis kinda sad to see him go buts that’s the NFL business good luck man.

DETROIT HAS BETTER FANS (Who doesn’t?)

Detroit fans were crying with joy when the made the playoffs. Bucs fans were complaining about the OL, RB, Secondary, everything.

Detroit hadn’t made the playoffs in 30 years and were still selling out games. The Bucs were winning the division last year and couldn’t sell out a game. The Bucs have records for lack of attendance.

Let’s be honest, it’s surprising The Bucs haven’t been relocated. The fanbase is horrible.

  12. DS Says:

Still a good deal to get a 3rd I would have traded Dean too!

He always looks high to me.
One of our biggest underperformers at the CB position.
    We’re better without him.

  15. Marine Buc Says:

Solid cover corner but was weak and injury prone when he had to step up and play the run and make tackles on a RB.

He would be better as a rotational player and a NCB where his quickness and twitchy athleticism would be most beneficial…

At 5’10” – 180 lbs he was just too fragile to be a CB1.

WOW, holy Jesus, it’s almost like some of us here in the comments actually know what we’re talking about, and when we’re watching the ALL22 and seeing guys struggle in zone, yet play really well in man, we know the difference and don’t say stupid stuff like “DAVIS SUCK BAD GLAD GONE GRRRR”.

This also means we’re going to see the full on return of Bowles playing zone, because otherwise you don’t get rid of your top corner.

    God help us.

He was measured at 6’1″, 206. He’s always been a rangy corner with good length. I have no idea what cornerback you have him confused for.

Speaking of trades, made this response on another post:

    OK, ‘Correcting a Mistake’.

Let’s explore this aspect of Joe’s post, shall we?

Are there any other mistakes Bowles or Licht or the Glazers would like to fix?[you know, like making Licht move up in the 2nd round to pick Aguayo? 😉 ]

You’ll figure out who/ what the mistake was if you keep reading.

One more thing -before you dismiss this as a conspiracy theory (yes I’m referring to you Tony marks), after McCoy was released, who did the Bucs sign and what # did he wear? (actually, they both wore that #, but bear with me)

Not saying this will happen, but when you see them cutting/ trading starters to clear cap space, you wonder what they are planning to fill that particular void.

Most probably, they they would like to:

    A) find a FA
    or
    B) use someone they still have under contact
    or
    C) use a draft pick

    to fill that void. Right?

What about a trade? Player for player, draft pick(s), or a combination?

Who could possibly fill Shaq’s spot, say, when he was at his peak?

    Answer:

They may be considering a deal for Josh Allen.

    Just sayin’

What kind of trade would you propose?

  20. Rod Munch Says:

For the dopes — early in the year, the Bucs were literally playing zone over 90% of the time. That is the future, that garbage Bowles zone so loose it makes Mike Smith’s zone look tight.

    Awful, awful, awful.

Man I hope I’m wrong. Nothing is more frustrating than watching the defense stand around and give up 16 play drives that eat up 10 minutes of clock as teams take their free 4-6 yards on nearly ever play. Yes, it does, because of the field, start to tighten up in the red zone, but when teams just take what Bowles give them, they’re going to always get at least 3, if not 7. Every time.

  21. Beeej Says:

Well he was honest enough about not being very good in his zone

  22. Olboy Says:

Doosh. Lol yep. That’s just funny though.

  23. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Diverse fan base is common in the sunbelt markets because a high percentage of the fans in these markets are originally from the north — and their loyalties are split between their old team and new team. Winning cures most of that!

We lived in the Phoenix area for 12 years. I remember going to a game (still at SunDevil Stadium) against the Browns — say in the beginning of the 90’s? It seemed like were more Browns fans in the stadium than Cardinals fans. I felt empathy for the Cardinals players for that (even though I was a Browns fan)!

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Marine Buc – Yeah, I’m with the other guy, I think you got your measurements wrong. Davis is a big guy, him and Dean are at leas 6 ft, it’s part of why the 2020 Bucs defense could be so aggressive, because you had two big corners that could play man-to-man.

Also there is rarely any shutdown corner in the NFL anymore because of rule changes, almost all that go to the benefit of the WR, unless that corner is playing Mike Evans, in which case it’s a free for all.

But Davis, in man, is really f-ing good. Detroit, a playoff team, isn’t giving up a 3rd and paying $15m for a guy that can’t play.

Out of all the moves made by Licht in the last few years, this is by far my least favorite – because you’re not just losing Davis, a great corner – you’re telling Bowles his garbage zone is a full go.

  25. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Bowles did NOT want to get rid of Davis who IS a good CB. They just could not pay everyone without leading us back into cap hell. Evans, Wirfs, David, and Winfield are all elite and could end up in the Hall of Fame one day. We have to bring them all back and/or extend them as well as pay Baker and upgrade some positions as well. Davis is a cap casualty but he’d still be on the team if the salary cap wasn’t an issue. He helped the Bucs hold Patrick Mahomes and the Chief to zero TDs in their Super Bowl matchup so I’ll choose to remember him for that.

Even if David could play zone defense I doubt the Bucs wanted such a large percentage of the cap being paid for the secondary. Something had to give.

You guys are right. I just looked it up… Davis was bigger than I stated. I might of confused his size with Izien…

  28. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

I don’t think CD was bad. If used properly he will do well in Detroit.

But I wouldn’t play him 100% of the plays or else he will be on IR before mid-season.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

I appreciate his efforts. He had some solid games.

That said, too much $$$ in corners and time to move on.

It was him or Dean. I didn’t care which.
A 3rd – two 6ths is OK with me. Maybe that 3rd can be packaged for an effective, credible edge..or C/LG.

  30. Darin Says:

  32. Buccos Says:

I loved David. He was sticky as glue when he played ma. I’ve never seen a better man corner. If he could stay on the field I would never get rid of him. But he couldn’t so Imglad that they got a premium draft pick for him at least. Too much money in the secondary and he can’t play zone

  33. Capt.Tim Says:

    Thus ends the experiment.
We tried defending the pass, by building a strong secondary. Tall rangy Cornerbacks.
Mighta worked better, if we had played Man to Man. That was the strength of Davis and Dean.
Of course,we played Zone 84% of the time- which does better with smaller, more agile CBs. Oh well, genuises in football are few and far between.

,Now, HOPEFULLY, WE go back to A more traditional pass defense. One thats based on RUSHING THE QB!
problem with that, is pass rushers are more expensiveand harder to find, then Cornerbacks.

But Jason Licht has done EXACTLY WHAT HE PLANNED. I think he still has a plan.
Next is sign AWj to a cap friendly deal. Then sign Wirfs to a long term, cap friendly plan.
That should give us enough to find the Edge/Guard/Center we need, in the next wave of Free agency. Probably after the draft.

In Licht we trust. I think he knows exactly who hes going to add to the team in the next 3 months. This guy has his act together!

  34. A Bucs Fan Says:

I believe he got worse after getting paid but he was a top man CB during the sb run. I also think in hindsight outside of investing in AW31 putting all that money in a secondary with the mondern play of the NFL is pointless.

The Bucs secondary woes I put squarely on the pass rush. Fix that and who really cares who’s in the back field when the QB has no time to throw.

  35. Architek Says:

Mercer heard a NFL cornerback not over inflate his talent and production 😂😂😂.

Nothing against Davis but I think we can get better value.

  36. Capt.Tim Says:

A great pass rush makes the secondary look good.
A bad pass rush, like our, will make any secondary look bad.

Soooo, if we are gonna be 20th in pass defense, might as well pay cheap guys.
Why pay top dollar to suck

  38. cmurda Says:

He’s a tough loss and a solid player. I won’t take that away from him. A shutdown corner? I definitely wouldn’t say that. I saw CD24 torched enough last year to pump the brakes on shutdown status. Darelle Revis status? No way. With all that said, CD is a great corner with laughable hands but, hey, they say that’s why he plays defense.

  39. Bucsfan207 Says:

    Rod Munch great take!

I said in a previous take that if you traded Dean or Davis that they’re would be no playoffs – no depth at CB will be the downfall, no free agents & drafting rookies will be hit or miss – plus no edge rushers??? The team got worse! Resigning players doesn’t make you better than the previous year! Plus Atl has gotten better. Could be a disappointing year!

Plus the Bucs resigned a dude who went 1-6 in the middle of the szn & threw 100 mil at him.

  40. Saskbucs Says:

I don’t know about lockdown being a myth for him as I read above, when healthy and allowed to man up without a 12 yard cushion, he can absolutely lock down the #2 on the outside. That’s obviously valuable. Depending on the #1 WR he could sometimes get them as well. Health and scheme though, as mentioned play a factor and it seemed obvious to a lot of us, he wasn’t always used in that capacity. At the same time, this is a league where versatility matters, one trick ponies better be damn good at that one trick.

  41. cmurda Says:

Good points Rod especially the Bowles zone. Ugh. I still agree with the move. I think of the move as a prediction of what’s to come. The life of a corner in the NFL is not that long. It’s a different story for safeties. Safetys barring the best in the game, AW31, are a dime a dozen but corners are absolutely coveted because of that very reason. If you were going to gamble in a trade, one that nets you significant cap space, CD was the right sacrificial lamb choice.

  42. cmurda Says:

EXCELS in zone coverage and can play press man as well….

Think his 50 would be sub 4 !!!!

    Again, a WHITE DUDE!!!

Could be 1st starting corner since Jason Sehorn!!!

  44. BakerFan Says:

Only had 9 picks in 6 years. Heck Daron Bland of Cowboys had 9 this year with 5 of them going for Pick 6.

I would not be thumping my chest unless you can give examples or have stats to back it up. HE HAS NEITHER.

  45. CTBucs Says:

Watch the Texans game…. CD got abused

  46. Stanglassman Says:

Will the Bucs get a Edge rusher in FA? I’d like to address edge, center or Guard in free agency so they have more flexibility in the draft. Connor Williams is a great center who may come cheap on a one year prove it deal because he blew his ACL week 14 last year. PFF had him the highest graded center ‘23. Sign him and get Graham Barton (or JPJ) to play LG or Center if Conner’s not ready to start the season.

  47. Boss Says:

He about an 8-8.5 on the revis Deion scale of 10

He is a loss and zy will get burnt…but zy should make up for it in picks

  48. Marine Buc Says:

Does anyone else want the Bucs to check out Arik Armstead?

Is he washed? John Lynch just let him go but when he was healthy he was dominant…

Can you imagine our D-Line with Kancey, Vea and Armstead with Gains and L. Hall as back-ups?

    That would be dope.

  49. Rod Munch Says:

cmurda – I mostly like what Licht has done in FA and the draft over the years (although I hate him hoarding $4m defensive lineman that don’t end up doing anything, when he could have saved that and bought one $12m defensive lineman that is good).

But in this move you’re dumping a a 27-year old #1 starting corner, and killing your depth at corner, for a late 3rd rounder and $5m in cap space.

In fairness to Licht, if Bowles went to him and said we’re now a passive zone team – then you don’t need those expensive corners. So in that case, you might as well get whatever you can.

I’m not rooting against Licht, Bowles or the team, I’m just expressing my concerns about this move and what it means about the scheme. I honest to God hope I’m wrong, since nothing is worse than a defense that can’t stop anyone, and even worse, doesn’t even try – and that is the Bowles passive zone to a tee.

  50. Rod Munch Says:

Marine Buc – I like Armstead, but I wonder what he’ll get and if the Bucs have the money. Apparently the 49ers wanted to keep him at a reduced cost, and he instead chose FA, so it sounds like he’s wanting to get paid.

But reading the 49ers sites, they said he could still play – it was purely a money issue, and frees up a whopping $18m in cap space for them.

  51. Patrickbucs Says:

Art Van furniture had to buy up cheap tix with Barry Sanders on the team to avoid local blackouts. When the teams suck so does their attendance. Football is 8 games a year, see how the Pistons are doing.

I like CD, if he stayed healthy he was very good. Can’t keep them all.

  52. Capt.Tim Says:

When you are half of a CB pair, that is 29th in pass defense.
    You arent a shutdown Corner.
When your only defense is, that you didnt play half the time- because you were on IR! , then you shouldnt be bragging about anything!!

  53. cmurda Says:

@1988. I know this is messed up but I saw WHITE DUDE and I stopped reading. Then I eventually started reading again and saw sub 4 40 yard dash and again had to stop reading. I’ll believe it when I see it and I sincerely doubt that I see it.

  54. Herbiebuc Says:

He was only shutdown against Micheal thomas and he is gone. So I’m guessing we didn’t need him anymore

I’m a Carlton fan but I agree with this move.

  59. Rod Munch Says:

It really is ridiculous reading these comments and how many people are absolutely clueless about what they’re watching. These morons talking about him not being a good coverage corner, are the same idiots in the gameday thread that would say Davis needs to be cut, he let that guy run right past him – not being smart enough to know they were watching a zone defense at work.

Or Davis, again in zone, would cover his area of the field then slow up as he got to the end of his coverage responsibility, and a QB then puts a pass into the empty area of the zone, and these dopes, again having no idea what they’re watching, would said “DAVIS BAD CAN’T COVER ANGRY GRRR!!!”

Those same people are here today telling everyone how Davis is terrible in coverage. Meanwhile the team that the Bucs just lost to in the playoffs on a Baker Mayfield INT, are the ones sending a 3rd rounder for Davis and picking up his $15m contract.

Anyways, keep the stupid comments coming, it gives me new material.

  60. ElioT Says:

Rod- please bro. How many career regular season games has Davis missed? How many impact plays has he made?

And I hate Lions fans btw but I dont see many fan bases other than Bucs fans rooting for their QBs to fail like they did with Winston and Mayfield

  65. Mike C Says:

OK, you are a tampa fan…. you live in Detroit(I know I know why would anyone do that?), Bucs coming to town, How much would you spend for a ticket? You don’t have 8 or 9 more events planned (like if you were a season ticket holder) so what’s you Budget like for that ONE GAME? Everyone always give crap to Buc fan for having the other teams fans in our house, we’ll sorry if Tampa fan can’t out bid Ny,Philly,Dallas,Detroit etc at 300 bucs a ticket. And save the Detroit sells out BS they had a 50k average in 21…. and then started to sell out when they got better in 22 and 23, just like every other NFL team except maybe the chargers.

    cmurda Says:
I’m not so sure it would be prudent to call out Bowles defensive system. Dude has delivered a bad ass defense year after year here.

    ———-

When Bowles has been aggressive and played man-to-man the defense has mostly been great – minus the early breakout period in 2019.

But in 2021, when all the corners got hurt, and the Bucs were down to signing guys off the street – they had to dumb things down and started playing a lot of zone. I had zero issues with that, you have to adjust to your personnel, and Bowles did a great job of getting what he could out of the defense until everyone returned, and they finished 5th in points allowed. However, at the end of the year, in that Rams game, they get burned to finish the game – and I’m convinced that broke Bowles — or Arians retiring left the foot off the aggression pedal, one of the two.

In 2022, the Bucs started playing a ton of zone, and the points allowed dropped to 13th.

In 2023, the Bucs started out the year playing even more zone, nearly 95% zone defense early in the season. However, during the Houston game, with the zone completely unable to stop anything, Bowles was forced to start calling more man – and over the next few weeks they started to become more balanced and more aggressive. Still, it’s nothing like 2019 or 2020 or 2021 when guys were healthy. In any case, the switch on defense salvaged the year, and the Bucs finished 7th in points allowed.

What I’m worried about, is without Arians here to tell Bowles to stay aggressive, and with Bowles dumping guys that don’t play well in his zone defense (White, Davis) – these are signals that we’re going to get a heavy dose zone, and Bowles version of zone is trash. I’m telling you, go back and watch those early 2023 ALL22 games on defense, the guys are just standing around – its nothing like those early all-time great Tampa 2 defenses where the windows are very tight, these are super sloppy, corners 10-12 yards off the LOS, easy passes all day long.

I hope Bowles has a wrinkle or something he’s been waiting to unleash, because if it’s what we saw last year when they played zone, it’s going to be an extremely long season of Mike Smith like defenses that never get off the field.

But, I’m just posting stuff on the internet, maybe I’m wrong – I hope I am and he’s going to at least zone blitz — and no, Bowles, playing a 5-2-4 doesn’t mean you’re blitzing on every play.

  70. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Leat not forget Bowles has a SB ring how the f can u keep wrapping on the guy he shows up does his job & finds a way sure seems like Licht & glazers r OK with his tenure

  71. Rod Munch Says:

ElioT – just to be clear, I’m not calling out people talking about injury – only the people saying “HE SUK NO COVER BAD MAN GRRR”. As far as injuries go, those are fluky, and I’ll take my chances.

Dean is much more of an issue to me, because while his start numbers look better, he’s the guy who is injured all week, goes out and gets injured 2 plays into the game, then does the same thing the following week, which is a lot worse than just being injured and missing the game since you’re not taking up a roster spot.

BUT, in fairness, people remember what they want to remember, so maybe I’m completely off base on that, but that’s how I remember things.

However, no, I’m not trading away my 27-year old top corner for a late 3rd rounder and $5m in cap – not if you’re trying to win this year anyways. BUT, if you’re just playing the Bowles version of zone defense, you can seemingly throw anyone out there and no one really looks better or worse than anyone else, so if that is the case, then Licht is right to get what he can.

He’s dropped more picks than he has. He made plays but also would get burned. And I mean he was available less and less. And looked slow at times, like he’d had a long weekend. In the end he’s more talk than production is all. Would rather have a complete corner that’s a Lil faster, regularly healthy, more versaltile, and can catch INTs. It was a smart move, worth the late 3rd, and what needed to be done to improve our Secondary towards elite

He had some lockdown games but those are far and few between the past few years. Oh well good luck to him.

Him being a lockdown corner is a MYTH. Dude struggled all the time. Gave up many critical 3rd down conversions.

When he was allowed to play man coverage he was a lock down corner. He held Michael Thomas to 1 catch and 13 yards for the YEAR! The problem was that too often Bowles had them in zone, 10 yards from the LOS.

Bowles is okay. He grew some last year allowing us to go on more fourth downs. But he was an AWJ forced fumble away from being unemployed.

All good points … Rod , …Bowles is confidant he can cover any shortfalls … Its the price you pay for being successful and managing the salary cap!

I wish we could’ve kept em.. played well when healthy, you can only lock someone up for so long lol pass rush has to work w/ the coverage.. hopefully we can get a premium pass rusher
