Baker Mayfield Is A Johnny Football Clone

March 23rd, 2024

Baker Mayfield

This certainly will be one of the most fun and interesting items of the day, especially considering the source, and it has nothing to do with out-of-control nights in Vegas.

Living legend Bucs receiver Mike Evans joined TexAgs radio this week and talked a little Bucs football. Yeah, Evans admitted he thought about playing for the Houston Texans this season — based between his hometown of Galveston and his college home at College Station — but it never got to the point of anything serious. He felt the two-way love in Tampa and said that’s why he never actually became a free agent.

Evans was asked about his Bucs quarterback, a man well known in Texas football circles, and Evans said Baker Mayfield reminds him a lot of Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football, who was Evans’ legendary quarterback at Texas A&M.

For younger readers unaware, Manziel was one of the notorious quarterback busts in NFL history after Cleveland selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, 15 spots after Evans.

“Man, Baker, man, he surprised me a lot,” Evans began. “With not his game, I knew he was a really good player, just how he is as a leader and a teammate. He really surprised me a lot.

“He’s similar to Johnny, his playing style. I mean, really similar. So it was easy to adjust to play with him. Shorter quarterback. Great athlete. Throws like a baseball player, like really tight spiral. Really good arm. Improvise, can do all those things. Super tough. So I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do this year.”

Poor Johnny. He just didn’t have his mind right.

Joe likes the Baker-Johnny, on-field comparison. It makes a ton of sense.

Similar to Johnny except without substance abuse issues.

  2. Capt.Tim Says:

    Yeah, it kinda does.
Manziel was a strong armed, accurate gunslinger
    And a tough kid.

Manziel didnt have any of Mayfields ability to read defenses, and make quick decisions.

So yeah, physically they had alot in common- although nobody has an arm as strong as Mayfield.

Mentally is where manziel came up short( yup, did that on purpose)

Great to see the love and respect Evans has for Mayfield.
Meybe if the Bucs decide to fix that POS OLINE, Those 2 can really be amazing together.

  3. Jw94buc Says:

More like Johnny could have been Baker if he kept his sh%* together. I do feel like Mike Evans feels like he’s playing college ball again though. He’s happy loves baker. If the Vets of the locker room embrace baker. Us fans better get on board too!

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

Yeah..But Johnny Football sucked at the NFL level.

  5. gotbbucs Says:

Oh my, I bet Joe went from six to midnight when he heard that comparison.

  6. BillyBucco Says:

Capt Tim is like this sites Gestapo.
    Yawn.

  7. SB~LV Says:

    Joes were Jonesing for Manziel

  8. Buc1987 Says:

    Evans made Manziel.

    So I get the comparison.

  9. Bucs Reality Show Says:

    Hey BillyBucco,

I would suggest you start by learning the alphabet, then move on to grammar, and within a couple of years, who knows, you’ll be writing full sentences!

  10. Bucben61 Says:

    Billybucco…yawn

  11. UKBuccaneer Says:

As far as I’m aware, Mayfield reads playbooks and doesn’t sleep in team meetings, and is actually a pretty diligent professional athlete. But sure, other than that they’re similar.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I wanted to remind JBF readers how much Joe obsessed over drafting Johnny Football…..but I won’t do that.

  13. Boss Says:

    Lol….look how manziel turned out.

Bake, the situation, can NOT read defenses. It’s the entire reason mike likes him so much. He guarantees mike, drop it like it’s hot, evans will get all the targets.

Sometimes I feel like the only one with a brain around here.

  14. Boss Says:

Don’t listen to me though…..go watch the season where the GOAT took us to the Super Bowl.

In fact, anyone with half a brain would know mike is the reason for our offensive struggles. Bake too.

When you focus on a vertical deep play WR for the first read, by the time you get to the 2nd read it is too late because their play has already developed and they are no longer open….then you get a qb scrambling and trying to be a hero.

Don’t listen to me…..just use your brain. Play madden one time if that’s your things…but for heavens sake wake the f up people.

  15. Pickgrin Says:

    STFU BOSS

You are obviously not working with even half a brain and your constant ME13 hate schtick is past old….

  16. #99 the big fella Says:

Boss, you are at your limit for negative post today.. maybe have your doctor put you on medical marijuana..Just might help with your anger issues.

  17. Bucben61 Says:

Boss you might be the only one with a brain…you need to get it out of your ass

  18. Buc1987 Says:

Somebody HAD to do it….it may as well be Boss.

    Go Bucs!!!

  19. SlyPirate Says:

LET’S SIGN JOHNNY FOOTBALL AS QB 3!!!

Baker + Johnny Football? Can you even imagine? It would be hilarious. I wonder if we could get Winston back, too. EPIC HEISMAN QB ROOM!!!

  20. Woodenman Says:

Someone please leave a wake up call for Boss.

  21. Bucben61 Says:

Skypirate…I’d pay too see that!!!!…our version of the scarecrow…the tinman and the lion

  22. Bucben61 Says:

    Slypirate…sorry

  23. stpetebucfan Says:

Some guys grow up and some do not. Baker was a wild child but seemed to learn from his struggles and grow from them. Johnny Football never seemed to really get it…kinda like JW through his rookie year in the NFL.

  24. Pickgrin Says:

Manziel could have been a good NFL QB – maybe great…

He had a lot of God given talent for football.

But Johnny didn’t care a lick about football – other than as a means for fame and money which allowed him to drink and ‘party’ and womanize 24/7.

It blew me away when he admitted in that documentary that he literally never once studied or watched film for an upcoming game. Not in HS – Not in College – not in the Pros.

“Johnny Football’ was so talented that he could just show up on game day, play by the seat of his pants week in and week out – and look really good doing it. Having Evans as your main target didn’t hurt of course….

But once he got to the NFL – that lack of preparation was no longer going to work… and Johnny was so deep into his alcoholism and ‘party’ mode by then that his personal and professional life quickly fell apart.

You know there had to have been at least a couple or more people that worked for the Browns – whose main or sole responsibility for a couple years was to try and help keep Johnny on the straight and narrow – try and help keep Johnny out of “trouble”….

LOL – that would have been like THE world’s most frustrating job….

  25. Mort Says:

Remember that time some local football writers were dying for the Bucs to draft Johnny 8-ball? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

    …….

Boss, I think I will actually listen to people like Kurt Warner, Mike Evans and other NFL coaches, you know like Football people. Not ignoramus like you.

  27. BakerFan Says:

Manziel was much better running in the open field, but Baker is far superior in all other aspects.

  28. SB~LV Says:

I don’t think Baker can drop a football from the top of the end zone into a garbage can on the goal line like Johnny Fuzzball did, right Joes 😂😂😂

  29. sweti_yeti Says:

That comparison is poor. I think Evans is being kind to his friend Johnny FB, who was a schoolyard level player, and clearly not the brightest bulb. Mayfield isn’t all about partying and living the life of a player, whereas that was the whole thing for JFB. The only similarities I see are both are shorter of stature, though Mayfield probably has about 2 inches on JFB. Mayfield should take offense to that comparison.

  30. White Tiger Says:

Interesting comparison by Evans. Comparing the good parts of Baker’s game and celebrating them, because they’re having similar success at the NFL level.

But, Baker clearly understands/reads defenses, he just needs better line play & a running game. A stud defense, supported by a great edge rush would also do wonders!

  31. Duane in Sanford Says:

Jeff Garcia with a much better arm.

  33. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Remember if it was up to the one Joe we would of never had Mike that Joe wanted Johnny soooooooooooo bad

  34. David Says:

Sorry, but I actually did not read the article because that headline is atrocious. That is a massive insult to Baker Mayfield. Johnny football, regardless, of how much one of the Joe’s liked him, is a POS who never amounted to anything. An entitled, spoiled, extremely overrated drunk.

  36. David Says:

So my comment was taken down because it trashed Manzel and said it was an insult to Baker? Seriously?

  37. Cobraboy Says:

    Baker Football?

  38. Shane Callahan Says:

I watched Manziel demolish (a terrible) Sooners defense in a bowl game. He looked like Superman. Baker was forced to emulate Johnny Football this year because of the constant pressure in his face. Man, if our IOL could greatly improve, our offense will be unstoppable, and the Baker haters will finally be forced to shut up.

  39. Steven007 Says:

Boss, there’s a difference between a contrarian and an idiot. As Tony Marks remarked above, intelligent people don’t feel the need to state that they’re intelligent. It’s obvious. But if you want to be regarded as contrarian as opposed to being an idiot, you need to come with better stuff. Your tired, recycled one note criticisms just don’t do.

  40. infomeplease Says:

At the NFL level, the players are all great athletes! What separates most players is their mental toughness. In this regard, comparing BM6 to Johnny Football is like comparing a rattlesnake to a worm!

  41. BucsFan Says:

“You’re no daisy” You’re no daisy at all” “Poor soul , he was just too high strung”. The ballad of Johnny football and Johnny Ringo.

  45. NCBuc Says:

Wait just a second Steven007….. One of the Baker blow hards mentioned how so much more intelligent he was than majority of people on here. So apparently because he is a BM fanatic, that’s ok with you. But someone else says it, then it’s a problem. Make it make sense please

  46. NCBuc Says:

I believe Brissett would be a league-average starting quarterback if given the chance. I believe that league-average starting quarterbacks are worth a lot. I know that Brissett easily outplayed the quarterback before him in Cleveland (Baker Mayfield) and the quarterback after him (Deshaun Watson), then dramatically supercharged the Commanders offense the minute he hit the field last year in place of Sam Howell.

  47. NCBuc Says:

This should get the BM all high strung

  48. Steven007 Says:

NC, I must have missed that one. But if that’s the case, the same message remains. It absolutely had nothing to do with the quarterback aside from nonsensical ramblings. Ditto receiver.

  49. Bucben61 Says:

Ncbuc…what does liking Baker Mayfield have to do with your ineptitude

  50. Bucben61 Says:

Jacoby is a great #2 or bridge QB….he has 51 career tds and has been in the league 8 seasons…that doesn’t equate to an average starting QB…sorry

  51. Bucben61 Says:

Jacobys line season in Cleveland he played in 16 games and started 11 games…in games he started he was 4-7…he thru 12 tds vs 6 picks and didn’t quite make 3000 yards…how is that vastly outplaying Baker…help me out

I read that and nearly posted what you did. He can’t help himself out much less you. Its total nitwittery. Even when Baker played injured he threw for more yards and the year before he was injured smoked Jacoby in just about every production category.

Only a burning hater would say he “easily outplayed ” Baker.

Where did I say that long nose Pinnochio? The majority “here” don’t even post comments. Smarter than Baker hater regulars who post comments? There you have something but that’s a category – not the only smart person.

You know . Its the same as KNOWING you are smarter than Flat Earthers. Same thing – same category.

  54. Marky Mark Says:

Roger Staubauch and Fran Tarkenton are better comparisons.

  55. Cobraboy Says:

@MadMax: yeah, I’d bundle you guys and #26 to move up, then reclaim you on waivers.

    For casual depth.

    ;-D

  56. Bucben61 Says:

I’ve enjoyed watching Bakers style of football since his college days…I think he has the potential to be something special…I’m a Baker boy…sign me up

  57. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Joe, you’re u had to love hearing that, lol.

  58. Gipper Says:

Manziel is bipolar ( manic/depression). It took the doctors awhile to figure him out. The booze and drugs were his way of self medicating. The Manziel story is a real tragedy. Good for him that he has a diagnosis and is working on his health problem. Hoping that Johnny Manziel has found peace and remains healthy.

  59. heyjude Says:

I actually thought about Manziel and Baker being similar before. Mike Evans made Johnny look great and they have remained friends throughout. Evans and Baker have just started working together one season, so this next season we could see them really click the same way.

We all knew that Houston could be a choice of Mike’s. So happy he decided to stay here. Thank you to his wife too!

I read an article a couple of days ago that AFL arena football wanted Johnny back. It would be nice to see him do it while staying healthy mentally and physically. I always liked Johnny and hope the best for him.

  62. NCBuc Says:

That actually wasn’t meant for TM, but Capt. Tim who decided to proclaim his mass of NFL intelligence upon us.

  63. NCBuc Says:

I didn’t write up the story on JB. That was copied straight from NFL.com. I thought it was amusing since before BM resigned with the Bucs, that they had him ahead of BM on the free agent list. lol

  64. NCBuc Says:

And bucben…… Just in case you didn’t notice. I love sending you BM blow hards into frustration with your own words. No need to call any names behind a keyboard or phone. Just that there are many who don’t think BM is the new JBF messiah like JW was supposed to be, doesn’t mean that we agree to disagree on MF. At least Joe hasn’t put BM’s face on Jesus yet…..

  65. NCBuc Says:

And Marks…. I don’t hate BM. I just don’t see him as this outstanding QB that you make him out to be. He had a decent season. It took him 17 games to get 4000 yards. I couldn’t stand JW (I’m an FSU fan) and he 5k in 16 games. I get you love some BM, but that doesn’t mean everyone has to. We all have our favorite players, our meh players, and players we can’t stand. It’s called an opinion. I just don’t need to call you nitwit to understand that.

  66. NCBuc Says:

Just like saying Wolford is going to definitely be the 2nd string QB is absolute garbage. Have you seen this guys stats? Absolutely amazing GARBAGE!
