Super Bowl Should Up The Market For Chase McLaughlin

February 12th, 2024

Kicker Chase McLaughlin

The NFL is all about trends and team owners are easily influenced.

After all, they’re simply playing a high stakes game of fantasy football without fear of dropping money they cannot afford to lose.

Joe watched the Super Bowl yesterday surrounded by Big Storm beer and Hooters buffalo shrimp. Life is good.

That means Joe watched two kickers have historic success drilling field goals in the Super Bowl, with one kicker having a low extra point attempt blocked in a game decided in overtime.

Fans best believe that every NFL owner watching had some form of the following thought: “We better score ourselves a long-range-reliable kicker if we want to play in February.”

For Joe, that spotlights pending Bucs free agent kicker Chase McClaughlin, who just finished the best season for a kicker in Tampa Bay history. Even legendary Bucs kicker Martin Gramatica agrees with that evaluation. McLaughlin was phenomenal, though he hit the post and missed on a 50-yarder against the Lions in the playoffs. That was his only miss other than two blocked kicks earlier in the year.

So will McClaughlin play for the Bucs next season?

Conceivably, he could be the Bucs player to get the franchise tag, but that certainly will be reserved for Baker Mayfield if he and the Bucs can’t work out a long term deal.

No way Licht doesn’t sign him! Between Succup and now Chase, we can see memories of Kickers ghosts of Christmas past fading away

  3. Defense Rules Says:

McLaughlin is a MUST-SIGN. His 120 points for the season represented over 1/3 of the Bucs’ total. Duh. $5 mil per year for 4 years SHOULD do it. Git ‘er done JL.

  4. Marky Mark Says:

Kickers are underappreciated. Niners would have won in regulation with that extra point.

  5. BucsFan Says:

McLaughlin has elite distance and accuracy-Best Bucs kicker ever(even with Licht drafting two). Are you really going to let the best kicker in the history of the franchise get away???? Nope

  6. George R Says:

Marky, you don’t know that. KC would of went for it in 4th down instead of a game tying field goal. KC converts 4th down than the game doesn’t go into overtime.

Without a doubt he is a serious weapon hopefully he comes back

  8. Lakeland Steve Says:

Hope he is back as he was one of the top three kickers in football this last year.

    George R, Agreed.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

How much is a tag on a kicker? Can’t be much compared to others.

Hopefully, he’ll remain a buc. I have no desire to start the kicker search again.
