Todd Bowles Sold Out To Beef Up The Line

January 16th, 2024

Tush push kryptonite.

Sometimes, all it takes is some beef.

The Bucs held the mighty Eagles running game to 42 yards Monday night. Yes, 42 yards!

The Bucs also had five tackles for loss, six quarterback hits and three sacks of Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. That likely doesn’t happen if Bucs coach Todd Bowles hadn’t beefed up his defensive line.

At times, the Bucs went with five down linemen on defense, sometimes six. It worked, holding the Eagles to nine points and one touchdown.

“We thought we’d have trouble rushing four,” Bowles said after the game. “We thought we could get back there but [Hurts] is so athletic and he can move around.

“He can hurt you with his feet. We were trying not to let him hurt us with his feet.”

Loading up on the front line absolutely worked. Hurts only got loose once. And that was just a five-yard gain.

And yes, the Bucs even stopped the dreaded Philly Tush Push.

Take away D’Andre Swift’s longest run of 17 yards and the Bucs held Philadelphia to a measly 25 yards rushing. In a playoff game.

The Bucs defense is on a roll.

Oh, no Bowles slander,Yet???! Enjoy watching a defensive mind have two cracks at a team. Respect this man’s work!

  2. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    You mean yards, right?

  3. TB12 Says:

I have watched all the games this year and was STUNNED to witness what I saw from the BUCS in this game…it was like someone had kinapped the other BUCS team. The ENERGY level was HIGH, and the pass FIRST is what set up the run…instead of stubbornly watching run, run, and then pass, then punt…on repeat…. we played to our strength with the psss first.it was BEAUTIFUL to watch. and the defense went 85 Bears and attacking wtih the blitz….instead of the no blitz and soft zone we had been seeing….that was some chapmpionship caliber play callng and football tonight…it’s hard for any QB to beat you when they only have 7 seconds, if that, to throw the ball…even the Manning brothers knew the blitz was being dialed up and the dogs were let loose..just so enjoyabvle to watch and this team can compete and win against any of the others with that level of play and playcalling. Lets go BUCS!

  4. Buccos Says:

I was there. The energy was unbelievable. I’ve never seen a Bucs crowd that amped up all game long before. The game was never in doubt from the opening drive. Complete domination

  5. Dave Pear Says:

There’s a coaching and schematic move that deserves a standing ovation. Thank you Todd, I’ll eat more crow please while Oralbucgirl has no idea but just says “Yay Bucs!”

  6. ‘79 Defense Says:

    Buccos,

That’s really good to hear. Glad the fans showed up. It sounds like the good old days of 20-plus years ago.

  7. David Says:

I know a lot of people, including myself at times, have had issues with Todd Bowles as the head coach but you’ve got to give him his due as DC. Ever since the Super Bowl year he has been fantastic. Imagine what he can do with a consistent 4 man pass rush.

  8. Dan the Bucs fan Says:

I’ve been a Baker and a Bowles supporter since day one. This is a new era of Buc football we are here to stay! Bowles and Baker will deliver a third Super Bowl. This defense will eventually get to where the Sapp,Lynch, Brooks, Barber defense was. We have 80 million in cap space coming!

  9. teacherman777 Says:

I’m so proud of Bowles and this team.

The Eagles have no team spirit.

They tackled like they didn’t care.

Our players? Our guys played with their hair on fire!

    Our guys love our coach.

    And so do I!

We have the great defense. A a warrior-cowboy-gangster QB.

A young core of great players.

Wirfs and Winfield to lead for 5-7 years.

I’m riding with Bowles and Licht!

All you couch potato coaches need to shut your yapper!

  10. UGotRobbed Says:

Way to go coach! I slap my hand over my mouth! Keep it up!
    Go Bucs!

  11. Buccaneric Says:

It’s almost like Canales waited for the playoffs to really open up the playbook…

  12. Buccaneric Says:

I should clarify: as in, he waited to show his full hand until the playoffs. So many great calls.

  13. BucU Says:

Bucs win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Super proud of this team for fighting their arses off.
Congrats to everybody in the Bucs organization!

  14. Fansince76 Says:

Bowles still has it, the defense kicked arse!
Canales did great in first playoff game and unfortunately he
will probably be gone for a head coaching gig which sucks.

  15. BillyBucco Says:

Canales aint giving up this fun to join the stinking Panthers that is crazy.
Im sure they want to see what Baker can do in a 2nd year with some stability.
Still so surprised that Baker is now 2-1 in the playoffs. Already better than Dak for instance. That speaks dividends to me.
I will now support Baker through the Ups and Downs that every QB has.
This dude is a winner plain and simple.
He can out duel anyone on ANY GIVEN SUNDAY.
    Next up. Detroit.
    Oh Boy!!!!!

  16. Zoocomics Says:

@Buccaneric…imagine if we don’t drop half those damn passes, he looks even more impressive.

  17. itzok Says:

Now go remind Goff why the Rams got rid of him

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mayfield is truly a warrior….takes a beating for his team & the entire team including the defense follows his lead.

Canales called a good game last night as did Bowles….this is one of those times where we outcoached our opponents.

  19. Jason Says:

Not worried about Canales leaving. He’s smart enough to know he’s not ready yet.

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

This has been energized for weeks.
Im proud of the Team, and its head Coach.
Despite some weaknesses – they have played their hearts, since they all bought in.
They went from believing the bad press- to believing in themselves.
    Very much reflected their leader.
    Baker Mayfield.

    We got our Franchise QB.
And it didnt cost us a top 5 draft pick, or a huge trade.
We just had to give a guy a chance.
    Absolutely Amazing.

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

It was like watching the SB defense. They were scary in the most beautiful way

  22. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Holy schnookies, I’m gonna have to lose this moniker if these Bucs continue to perform like last nite! LFG

  23. BucFanDMV Says:

This was a great game plan by Bowles. Got to give credit where credit is due, the buccaneers defense really showed up in a big way. I hope they bring the same energy to the Lions

  24. unbelievable Says:

I noticed the extra lineman, especially in the early parts of the games.

Hats off to the defense for playing with their hair on fire. And to Bowles for a great game plan. They also got lucky with a few drops, but hey, no one ever wins without a little luck falling their way.

    Go Bucs!

  25. Suggiefresh Says:

Canales is a smart man and I think knows Head Coaching is in his future but not right now. Why go to a team that is trash and not have a bevy of trusted asst coaches to take with you. He has called playsone season and now would be asked to manage a team whiles also calling the plays. Give him two to three years and he’ll either take over for Bowles or move on, but not after one season.

  26. Drew Says:

I’ll say it again for the 30th time this staff and front office has done a marvelous job working with limited money due to dead cab space. They smartly evaluated and brought in a veteran, fiery quarterback, that they understood they could throw into the fire. Their O-Line was given time to develop and their defense plan makes sense to football guys!! And like a good staff still, they didn’t hit the panic button with their rushing attack which has progressively gotten better throughout the season. Lastly, they blocked out the noise. It’s a first class ran organization that needs nothing but their due credit this morning.

  27. orlbucfan Says:

Dave Pear, it’s orlbucfan. As a longtime fan, I am so proud of my team, I could scream. BM is one gutsy, fiery player. The whole team is fired up now. You can feel it. Lions better be ready cos a slugfest is coming to Motown. Go Mighty Bucs!!

  28. Mike Johnson Says:

Just to think, a few weeks ago most of us were willing to execute Bowles and his staff. The man remained calm in the face of adversity and delivered. Many Props to him. He knows his D line has several deficiencies. So he devised strategies to compensate and help them. On paper, Detroit looks like they can beat us hands down. But these Bucs are now believers. Detroit might be in line for one hellava shocker.

  29. BAKERSBucs says Says:

OMG this site is finally on board I am not going to rub it in,all the trash we have witnessed on this site all season.i been baker fanster from college days am happy u see the lite about time.i have missed Wyoming joe commentary of late plz let us know u r still in the house!

  30. BAKERSBucs says Says:

I wud bet them stinkin browns are going to take browns front office to the wood shed they deserve that freak Watson also the panthers with midget young they did mayfield a solid for letting him be released.bowles knew he had a good thing if they brought him in to 1 buc pl.thats why Bowles deserves credit & light listened

  31. Victor R Range Says:

Yes indeed the Bucs Defense did a fantastic job keep it up, and May I be the first to say I was wrong about Mayfield but he held his own and the running game wasn’t bad either. Go Bucs

  32. Wild Bill Says:

In many ways this was the most complete game this year for the Bucs. Offense, defense and a flawless fg kicker!!! Keep this up and they have an honest shot to get to the SB. And come out throwing from the get go!!!! Bowles found his balls! Has their kicker missed a fg this season? He has been consistent from 50 yds +. What an improvement!

  33. Mad Mike Park Says:

What happened to everyone calling for Bowles to be fired? I was glad we signed Baker in the off-season. I have always liked him. I hope we sign him long term. I don’t think we are keeping evans which will be a travesty. We can beat the Lions this week. Let’s hope the packers find a way to beat the 49ers so we can meet the packers again. Then it is on to Vegas. I foresee Baker being the super bowl mvp.

  34. Lakeland Steve Says:

The Lions are going to be prepared for the blitz. Hopefully the Bucs can give him a bunch of different looks and can try to confuse him on what defense they are in.
The Bucs have a punchers chance against the Lions and sometimes that is all you need. Go Bucs!
