Popular Teammate “Showed Who He Is”

January 7th, 2024

Fighter.

Joe knows Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield is not overwhelmingly popular among Bucs fans. But the man is popular in the Bucs locker room.

Anyone who fights through pain to stay on the field in a win — forget the importance of the win — gets massive street cred in any NFL locker room.

That’s what happened for Mayfield today. It wasn’t just that he played through pain and gutted out key plays. It’s that Mayfield never seems to put himself ahead of the team.

Even on the Buccaneers Radio Network, when pressed to comment after the game on what this season has meant for him professionally and personally, he dodged the question and began talking about his teammates and how great they played (even if maybe they didn’t, and maybe weren’t).

After today’s NFC South-clinching shutout win over the Stinking Panthers, Mayfield did it again by shouting out another popular player, Antoine Winfield.

By all rights, the Bucs should have been trailing 17-9 in the fourth quarter. That’s how rotten the offense played. That didn’t happen, in large part because Winfield forced a fumble from D.J. Chark at the goal line. Jamel Dean recovered it to keep the Stinking Panthers out of the end zone.

Mayfield immediately gave Winfield props.

“Incredible play by Antoine Winfield,” Mayfield said. “He shows again who he is.”

For Joe, that wasn’t just a shoutout, that was supporting a teammate in a very public forum calling out the corrupt Pro Bowl voting that jobbed Winfield last week. Almost as if Mayfield actually said on radio, “I’ve got your back, Antoine.”

That’s why Mayfield is popular. He’s not an international superstar like his predecessor, but Mayfield tries to make his teammates stars.

“We didn’t score enough points,” Mayfield said. “But we found a way to win. That’s all that matters.”

Winning is the greatest perfume. The Bucs offense sucked today. Really dodged bullets. But it somehow found ways to get points on the board even if Mayfield should have been in the peep show medical tent.

FOX sideline reporter Shannon Spake mentioned how Mayfield was bent over and breathing heavy between possessions as if searching deep for the strength to get back on the field. And that’s why teammates really rally to Mayfield. He may not be the greatest, but damn if he won’t do anything to try to get a first down or help the offense win a game, body and health be damned.

Mayfield showed who he is. He may not be Brady, but he’s baller in his own way.

Small minds seem to have already forgotten how well Bakers played this year and will just point out this game when he was very clearly injured.

Put Mayfield in Pittsburgh or Chicago or Detroit and the fans would love him. Tampa just isn’t a working class town. Fact is he won more games against the tougher schedule this year. He deserves the respect and support of the fans.

    Anything….ANYTHING……AANNNYYTHING AT ALL…….

…just as long as we keep Kyle Trask off the field and hide the fact

The world….your very jobs depend on this subterfuge.
If Trask takes the field it is the apocalypse!

  7. Bucs13 Says:

Stop trying to make Brady into some kind of divas. The teammates and coaches throughout his career said he was humble, despite his superstar status. Kyle Rudolph said there was a box next to his locker where teammates would put things in a box for him to sign.

This revisionist history of Brady’s tenure reeks of entitlement by some. The hate for Brady is so strong. They wanted Baker to succeed to downplay Brady’s tenure with the Bucs. They hardly discussing how Jordan Love has outplayed Rodgers from last season. It’s all about Brady and Baker.

  8. Bucs13 Says:

@Budda the schedule was not tougher than last year. You do know we all have Google. No need to lie

  9. rrsrq Says:

Like TB12, Baker benefited from some talented receivers, though he balled, there were times you held your breath when he went back to pass.

Are you thinking it’s still 1960?

Those cities are liberal as hell.
    Working class my ass.

  14. RGA Says:

It appears Baker is a great teammate, he’s a great cheerleader. He’s not a very talented QB, if the Bucs front office accepts mediocrity then by all means resign him, they can hang around the 500 mark again next season.

  15. Trask Cult Leader Says:

Well, they hated him in Cleveland.
    Wonder why?

  16. Jack Clark Says:

Baker Mayfield only threw for 137 yards today and scored ZERO touchdowns 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  17. Tb bolts Says:

2 games in a row he no showed. No one gives a sht if the locker room supposedly likes him. Dude is poverty and as unclutch as they come.

  18. Tbbucs3 Says:

RGA, youve been one of the loudest anti Baker pro Trask fan bois since August….please stop pretending like youve watched objectively this year

Let me guess if Trask made the playoffs with 28 pass TDs you wouldnt say a word 🤔

  19. Trask Cult Leader Says:

    Seriously…all Trask schtick aside….just being 100% objective:
    * BM is not accurate on the deep ball, even when healthy
    * Trask is a tall pocket passer who spent 2 years studying Tom Brady.

I suspect Trask would make BM look like a clown if he was ever allowed to see the field.

It seems like the Bucs are going to extreme measures to avoid Trask playing at all costs. Not sure if it’s Blowzo or if it goes all the way to the owners.

  20. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jack Clark, Baker made the playoffs today and Trask fan boys wont stop crying about it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  21. D-Rome Says:

Toughest QB the Bucs have had in a very long time.

  22. BucsBeast Says:

Bet your ass, I would’ve done everything possible to stay on the field also.

  23. Trask Cult Leader Says:

    LOL…yeah…..

It’s an AWERSOME turd. You just need to polish it a little and look at it from the exact right angle and it almost looks like a gem.

  24. Trask Cult Leader Says:

    He is very tough.
But that means little if you can;t throw the ball

  25. Tbbucs3 Says:

  28. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Geez, what whining Bucs fans. Prior to the season, NO ONE gave this team a chance in hell to win this many games, let alone compete and win the division. If you say you did you are a fu#$ing liar.
A 4mil QB, 75 mil cap hit and its a pitiful season to come was expected.
It certainly wasn’t pretty but the Bucs pulled out 9 wins, and a playoff game to come.
True fans understand the challenges, celebrate with other fans, have fun and ride the wave no matter how small or large.
Haters just wallow in their own misery.

  30. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

If Kyle Trask hqd started this year the Bucs wouldn’t have won 5 games. If the Bucs try to trade Kyle Trask they’ll be lucky to get a 5th rounder. If Baker had thrown for 400 yards & went 30-32 in completions & the Bucs lost you’d blame Baker just as you blame him for the Bucs winning this game. Baker made the clutch plays that mattered & din’t turn over the ball. PS Canales play calling leaves a lot to be desired. He always goes for a trick play that never seems to work when the Bucs need a few yards inside the other teams 50. His up the middle for 1 yard wastes countless downs. His idiot run play that lost the Bucs 5 yards almost put them out of football range. Why he goes deep when he needs 5 yards on third down makes no sense. Trey Palmer sucks.

Jonny, QB’s have been gutting it out with injuries for decades (Jim McMahon comes to mind). That’s what make them winners (and sometimes losers)

  33. Cobraboy Says:

Even a stinky win is a win.

  34. NYbucsfan Says:

  35. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Trask bois ain’t buc fans they’re as bad as Brady ball gurglers how often have the Bucs won the division and still they bitch and moan

  36. lanshark Says:

It didn’t help that Hainsey was getting literally pushed all over the field, and back into Baker on almost every pass. Baker could not step up into most throws, because Hainsey was coming backwards at almost full speed.

With the injury, it made it hard for him to roll out, and he could not step into the pocket most of the time. So, yeah, not his best game.

  37. RGA Says:

Tbbucs3 you are dead wrong, I’m an FSU not a Trask fan, however I would like to see what he can do. If he fails then the Bucs look to free agency or the draft. What you are right about is that I am not a Baker Mayfield fan, I’m a realist, he’s not a winner, he downright stunk today. He’s terribly inconsistent and as I have said multiple times, this team goes nowhere with Mayfield as the QB. I’m a Buc fan plain and simple. I’d like to see them win another championship, it’s not happening with Baker. He’s a solid back-up at best. A QB that struggles to complete a forward pass beyond 10 yards is not NFL quality. His first half stats are embarrassing.

  38. Trask Cult Leader Says:

Granted Hainsey is awful at center.
He looks to be out of his element and hanging on by a thread.

    Where art thou Ryan Jensen?

  39. Esteban85 Says:

Top ten QB in the league this year. Toughness, leadership, grit, and a little athleticism goes a long way in this league. He may not be the true future of the buccaneers but I think he earned another contract with this team. I still think we should be drafting a QB this April.

With a better running game and center next year I think Baker has room to improve as well as this offense as a whole. At least we know what we need

  40. Trask Cult Leader Says:

#1 To Do List for 2024:
    * Please get a real center
    * Give Hainsey an A for effort and a D for actual performance

Maybe I could be an NFL QB also?

  52. Trask To The Future Says:

    WHO CARES!!!

“He plays bad but is loved my his teammates!”

    ROFLMAO

It’s amazing how this guy has so many games this season with under or barely 100 yards in the first half then racks up yardage in the 2nd half when a game is already out of reach and we consider him having a great season.

Mayfield should have been benched several times this season but especially TODAY with the Divisional title on the line and him being hurt and ineffective.

Unbelievable the slack this guy has been given because of his “moxie” or how well he does in the locker room.

  53. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

You people conveniently forget the Bucs and Baker also beat New Orleans so that’s 2 teams with winning records. They would have beaten another winning team Houston if the Defense didn’t choke.

  54. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Trask To Th e Future Your man Trask blew his opportunity in the game he replaced Baker for 1 Series. The Bucs would have been lucky to win 5 games with Trask. As you predited the Bucs to not make the Playoffs or winning 5 games.with aker, admit you were wrong.

  57. Tbbucs3 Says:

Hes a 2d round bust no different than his SEC draft buddies Kellen Mond and Matt Corral.

  58. Tucker Says:

They would have wheeled baker out in a wheelchair before they put Trask in they are bad coaches no doubt but they are better than any fan evaluating players Trask has got to be so bad but whatever the earth is flat and all that right?

  59. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Again the New Orleans Saints finished 9-8 as did Jacksonville. I’m sorry yiu don’t understand math but that makes 2 teams the Bucs beat with a winning record.

  60. CalBucsFan Says:

Have to tip my hat to Baker, he’s been of the guttiest QBs I’ve seen in 50 years.

However, sure hope QB Penix has a bad night Monday so drops into the lower half of the upcoming NFL draft.

    Go Bucs!

  61. Rod Munch Says:

Who you beat rarely means much.

The 1999 St Louis Scams played a pansy schedule and once they got into the playoffs, and the Bucs were about to hand them a big fat L, the refs stepped up to determine the outcome of the game. So having the refs in your pocket is more important than being better than the other team or winning in the regular season.

In any case, all that matters now is beating an Eagles team that is on a huge slide.

That’s as big of a setup for success that there is in the playoffs — and if Baker plays like he’s played in the last two weeks, the Bucs will lose by 30. He has to be dramatically better, and I sincerely hope he is, because in year without any dominate team in the NFC, anything can happen if you get good QB play.

  62. Richard Nguyen Says:

Good lord, the Baker cult is out in full force after a pathetic showing against a pathetic team. His MO is playing like ass for 3+ quarters, having the defense gift him turnovers and keeping it close, just so he can chuck it up a bunch at the end of the game for either garbage stats or scrape out a win. He’s a trash to mediocre quarterback that ignorant fans slobber over because of “moxy” or whatever other smoke and mirrors feeds their braindead cultism.

Long time fans know, the offense icing a game is rare.

    Good job on that drive.

He could really light up the opposition if he was just a few inches taller. He’s a passer that has to see the receiver open. It’s not something that can be fixed, he’s a good QB and you can win with just a good QB. Anyone remember Trent Dilfer? Another just a good QB, was never great, never could throw a screen pass.

Bucs are in the playoffs. I hope we show up against the eagles this time. From what I read sounds like defense is figuring it out and becoming more effective. I sure hope that trend continues and our offense remembers how to score points. This has always been a defensive team but we need to put up some offense. LFG BUCS!!!!!!!
Whatever all you haters and would be coaches are saying is mute at this point because the BUCS have done better than most of you predicted. So STFU and root for your team or GTF outta here

  97. David Says:

    Baker fans:
Can a ball game finishes at 0-0 ? Uh, wait can a team wins a game scoring only 2 points when the other team scores zero ? Uh wait, I make it an easier question. Can team win scoring anything if the other team scores no point ?

How did Bucs win today scoring only with 3FG ? I tell you. Panthers score zero. Why ? I tell you. Antoine W. and the defense shut down the trash Bryce Y.

You all saw how Baker had no rib injury as he got hit several times. If Baker has a terrible day, the OC bad play calls, it’s because everyone dropped the ball, his ribs hurt, someone stepped on his foot, or the sun was in his eyes.

Did you notice he starts limping after each mis-throws and how he jumped up and down after each completions. He even was the first one to help in lifting the RB’s after each play off the turf with his injured rib.

Baker sucked today as last week. He almost cost Bucs their playoffs chances.

Not quite accurate. There are some whiny Bitttch Boys who hate the Bucs but still call themselves Bucs fans but live in a world of self-hate. They are vocal on this chat group.

The rest of us respect how tough he is, how he has grown since the Cleveland years, how he earns his teammates respect. He had a very good year for the Bucs. How many QBs in this tortured franchise’s history have had better years?

I don’t know why you keep deleting this but the Bucs have 3 wins against teams with winning records: Green Bay, Jacksonville, New Orleans. Show s you how much you follow football.

  102. 1#bucsfan Says:

If you have low standards this is the Bucs teams for you guys. Offense is pathetic. Awful to watch. Defense outside of a few good games is terrible. While I’m glad we won the division if we can’t win at least 1 playoff game it’s for the worst cause Bowles prob comes back next year. 9-8 isn’t good enough. Bowels has led us to the playoffs with a 17-17 record. I love the Bucs but football is about entertainment and this team is not entertaining. It was more entertaining to watch jaymiss let alone these Bucs. When BA got here he made Bucs football great again even that 1st year with jaymiss. I deff don’t want to pay top dollar to watch this clown show again next year. Bin a fan since 99. Baker had a up and down year better than what I thought he would do and didn’t miss a game. Dude has heart but he’s to inconsistent. To many missed throws on wide open targets. Let baker and the Bucs air it out for a full season like he are built for instead of Bowles running into a brick wall way and see how baker does before a big pay day. Gotta get rid of Bowles. Don’t like watching his team play. Also we prob can’t afford baker so all you lovers can quit crying about signing him

  103. Bucs13 Says:

Why are we comparing everything to Brady?! Why are fans reducing his tenure with the team to one bad season, by his standard. What a sense of entitlement. Did people forget about the lost decade before his arrival? It’s amazing how a fan base can hate a player that helped them win a SB and two division titles. He changed the culture where now fans actually have standards. This man also has been nothing but supportive of the team since retiring He’s been appreciative of his time with us. I wish some fans felt the same way, instead of dogging him at every chance. The fact is there’s a portion of the fan base would hated Brady and hated that he was successful during his time here. They couldn’t wait until he didn’t play well.

Here’s was Peter King said this morning:

Baker Mayfield, I raise a glass to you. Seventeen starts, gritting teeth through injury after injury, 4,044 yards, 28 TDs, a division title. Fantastic comeback. You deserve a new deal in Tampa.

    Absolutely!!

  105. Fred Says:

    Bowles been fired yet?

  106. Andy Says:

More negativity..you’re all sickening..you sound just like the classless idiots from Cleveland. I thought once Baker left Cleveland..the hatred would be gone..but it’s not..it follhim right here to Tampa..sad..it really is…SMH

  107. First Name Greatest Says:

Baker is a fighter, represents this fanbase and the city great. He’s the right QB for this team at this time.

Is he a franchise qb or the long term answer? NO, but I like winning way more than I like losing.

    GO BUCS!!!

I rarely post here. Just don’t like the bile that some post. If you haven’t played the game you have no f÷$/ing idea how hard it is to win a game , let alone a division title , in this league . If you’re a fan of this team appreciate the victory . Armchair QB’s and OC’s are bullshit. Enjoy the win , the team , and a division title. Geez , WTF is it with some of you. If you were on fire and someone was pissing on you to save your life you’d still be complaining. ENOUGH ALREADY !!!!! In my humble non-professional opinion.
