“Nobody Did That Throughout The Season”

January 22nd, 2024

Chris Godwin speaks.

Joe often hears how players and coaches ignore the media, and Joe also hears how players and coaches are glued to the media with crazed obsession.

That’s a topic for the Ira Kaufman Podcast, not here. Not today.

Players do hear a ton of outside noise. Lots of it, Joe has learned over the years, comes directly from family and friends. Players are texted all kinds of links to trash and love those close to them see and hear online and through traditional media.

Of course, some players are completely tuned out; others are swimming in the cess pool that is social media.

After yesterday’s game, Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin shared his appreciation for his teammates staying focused and not letting the naysayers into their heads.

“There wasn’t many people that gave us a shot to do anything this year, and I’m proud of all the guys in the locker room for the way that we handled all of that,” Godwin said. “Because it can be very easy for guys to look in the media and to read their press clippings and then just accept whatever fate is out there. But nobody did that throughout the entire season, and we understood that it mattered what we did week in and week out, day in and day out. That was going to ultimately decide our season.”

Joe will add that the Bucs stayed grounded in their work despite having 13 rookies on the roster. Those guys are not seasoned to the ways of what Godwin seems to think is divisive media. That’s a testament to the coaching staff, team leadership and the character of those rookies.

Godwin added that this season was “an unbelievably fun year.”

    Go Bucs

  2. BucFanDMV Says:

Bucs had a great season this year especially since they were not expected to come close to sniffing the playoffs.

  3. Upstate NY BUC Says:

    NICE!!!

  4. Buddha Says:

Disappointed that it’s over but damn proud of the team .

  5. Lord Cornelius Says:

Super proud man and it was a fun year

  6. First Name Greatest Says:

Some players ignore the media, which is 100% true.

But their spouses don’t, their families don’t, their agents don’t

Fans still approach them in public and give their unsolicited opinions, those players even still interact with media

So while some tune it out their inner circle might not.

This team just proved how little the national media pays attention to the Bucs and how a lot of their “predictions” are just guesses

  7. '79 Defense Says:

Definitely a fun year. Credit to the whole team, but I think a lot of what made it enjoyable was because of Mayfield and what he brought to the team.

  8. Bubby Says:

I had the team going 8-9 this year, and I’m glad they exceeded my expectations, albeit slightly.

  9. Lt. Dan Says:

All things considered it was a good year. Now time for JL to get to work. Still not a fan of coach Bowles though. Mediocre at best.

  10. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

We have a great core of players and a strong foundation. Gotta give credit to Licht and Arians for this and for Bowles and the current staff to help carry that team centered focus. It’s impressive in a negative media and money driven world. I hope Licht stays aggressive with this roster and the draft. We have a window to build something special with this roster for a long time.

Joe pleez get us a story on the 13 rooks you mentioned, what it was like and hopes and dreams.

  12. NutterBuccer Says:

Canales and baker have to….HAVE to work on getting Godwin more involved next year

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No regrets……we have a good mix of young players and vets……we are regaining a lot of cap space and we have 1,2,3,4, 6 & 7th picks

    Continuity with coaches (so far)….

We need all of it because we know we have a brutal schedule and the Falcons are a coach & a QB away from being very good.

  14. stpetebucfan Says:

Virtually all NFL teams have some “incidents” that can trigger larger things. I think the Eagles are a prime example. Receivers yelling at QB’s on the bench is a pretty loud “tell”.

The Bucs had TWO “situations” to deal with this past season. DW45’s absurd contract demands and pre season threats…and the mid season discussion triggered by CG14’s wife.

The Bucs handled BOTH of these incidents perfectly! It just seems to me that JL, the entire Bucs management team…owners, coaches, everybody have their spit together. They turned two potential blowups into nothing.

Kudos to management for staying the course and making correct decisions.

Another good draft maybe 2 solid signings let’s roll. Division runs through Tampa!!

  16. larrd Says:

The Bucs should hire one more guy to decide whether to run the ball or not. For instance, after three or four three-and-outs following runs up the gut on first and second down, the new guy can step in and say “no more running up the gut on first and second down.” Then, when the team is ripping it seven yards a crack in a playoff game, he can step in and say, “let’s stop forcing it to butterfingers and run the ball some more.”

    Just an idea.

  17. larrd Says:

Oh yeah, and maybe a red flag guy and a timeout guy.

  18. larrd Says:

I forgot: maybe a red flag guy and a timeout guy, too.

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

I would love to see Joe or a reader look at the experts picks for the Bucs at the beginning of the season and compare to our results. Peter King, and others trashed the Bucs at the begging of the season. Did anybody pick the Bucs to win the division? Go go 9-8 in the regular season? Pick the Bucs over the Eagles just prior in the playoff game?

Which experts were right? Some local guys? Any national guys?

  20. infomeplease Says:

Sad ending to an overall good season! Thank you Tampa Bay Bucs!!

  21. Wild Bill Says:

Well the Bucs went far further than expected. Making the second round of the playoffs was way beyond expectations. Nice way to finish an up and down season.

  22. garro Says:

Godwin is no dummy. Hes sees social media and the media in general as what they are. Proofs in the pudding. I don’t see a whole lot of “I was wrong” statements coming from all those critics.

Beleive what you see not what you are told Chris.

    Go Bucs!
