Harsh Ending For Devin White

January 1st, 2024

Devin White’s Buccaners demise had a crash landing yesterday, Joe believes.

Two games ago, White did not start at inside linebacker, tough he played all but three snaps and had a special performance against the Jaguars. Yesterday, healthy White played 51 of 70 Bucs defensive snaps, coming off the field so third-year backup K.J. Britt could take his place.

White played every snap alongside Lavonte David for years. In February, head coach/defensive guru Todd Bowles said White is always at least the second best Buccaneers defensive player on the field in any game.

Now, he’s rotating with Britt in the biggest Bucs game of the season.

It’s over for White in Tampa. Five seasons will not become six.

Again, with a division title on the line yesterday, the Bucs pulled White off the field. Joe has nothing against Britt, but what exactly is his NFL market value?

Last week, White said what he did against the Jaguars is the all-around performance he delivers when healthy. Yesterday, Bowles decided Britt’s best in certain areas is better than White’s.

Joe hopes White, who is an emotional personality, isn’t too pissed off by becoming a rotational player for the first time in his career. Joe believes White could still have big plays in his 25-year-old body, which the Bucs might require to have a prayer in the postseason.

    BandWagon looking empty

  2. Craig Says:

The Bucs have to get to the playoffs first. Devin White tried hard yesterday, but didn’t quite get there.

He just doesn’t believe in fundamental football. He has always been a beast on the field, but that doesn’t cut it anymore; he isn’t the big man on the block anymore.

  3. Rover Says:

He missed so many tackles. Shorts a** arms. Let him walk!

  4. Jugheadfla Says:

He continues to get lost on run plays way too often creating huge holes and he also continues to whiff on easy should be tackles. Britt is actually a better tackler and is much better in coverage. Not saying Britt should replace Devin next year but he is the better player. Dueces Devin

  6. Lt. Dan Says:

As long as Bowles is the HC this team will be mired in mediocrity. It’s his M.O. Always has been.

  7. realistic-optimistic Says:

DWhite reminds me of Andre Rison. Sandlot players with lots of physical gifts, but no professional discipline. Always ad-libbing and putting teammates in a pickle.

Speed without discipline is just a liability.

  8. Lt. Dan Says:

Joe — please stop calling Bowles a defensive guru. He is not. That was on display yesterday.

  9. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Happy New Year everyone! LT. Dan is spot on.

  10. SufferingSince76 Says:

    Lt. Dan, exactly.

  11. Kgh4life Says:

Right now Britt is the better player. He may not have elite athletism such DW, however, Britt is a better football player when it comes to fundamentals: coverage, reading run plays and tackling.

  12. ChiBuc Says:

DW is like a child who needs a decisive parent in charge to instill confidence in him, not a friend-parent. Everything Bowles touches slowly degrades to mediocrity. Bowles is every players’ friend, not a strong leader who motivates and promotes confidence. Best adjective I can think of re: Bowles is “flaccid”

    ^^^^
Most teams are giving up around 20 points a game nowadays, that’s the new normal. So by your logic we also need to stop calling Bill Belichick a defensive guru because he gave up 27 points to he Bills this week, 34 points to the Saints in week 5, and he has the lowest scoring offense in the NFL at 14.6.

  14. BucVoyager Says:

Bucs ending the year with a thud. I wouldn’t be shocked if we lose to the Panthers

  15. Pewter power Says:

Didn’t realize he was ever on the field anyway

  16. Bigbucfan90 Says:

Johnson having a field day on us was all white I won’t forget the drive we’re we should’ve had a safety but white instead of running with his tight end stopped and let Winfield cut across the field to make a play, that was a crucial drive if I’m not mistaken

  17. Cobraboy Says:

    White cooked his own goose.

If I could buy White for what he’s worth and sell him for what he *thinks* he’s worth…I could buy the Bucs and fire the entire coaching lot.

  18. ww50 Says:

How about we ACTUALLY make the playoffs first?! Or did you not learn your lesson from yesterday, you know how they fooled us all into believing in them.

  19. BucsLife Says:

He’s a fat clown, but the Bucs can’t stop the run and Chuba Hubbard ran wild on them in the first game and honestly deserved to win. When you have Whites and others as your captains the lack of professionalism and leadership shows on the field. People really need to be careful thinking we are going to dominate the Panthers and won’t be surprised when they come out and throw everything at the Bucs. Leadership is huge and we are the youngest team in the NFL. They destroyed every once of faith in fans yesterday by coming out and playing that way not just with so much in the line, but in front of 65k loyal fans. Lastly the weather is showing thirties with rain 😳

  20. gotbbucs Says:

You can’t trust him to just play the game and play his position. Defense only works if everybody is in their spot and makes the correct fit. He’s incapable.
For every splash play he makes, he has five missed run fits that prolong drives.

  21. BucsLife Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if a hurt Baker and leaderless team lose to Carolina

  22. BillyBucco Says:

I noticed yesterday that Bowles made a change at half.
It looked almost like they were playing more of a 4-3 in the second half

It takes Bowles way too long to make in game changes.
Old people’s brains just don’t work quick.
I really don’t think Bowles can get a team ready to play for whatever reason.
I have never seen a team look so flat in a win the division game.
Then he said he thinks the defense needs more energy at half.
    That’s on you Bowles!!!!!

  23. Thundersack Says:

I noticed Britt was on the field toward the end of the game due to the Saints trying to grind the clock down by running. Britt is a better tackler and has been playing the run better.

The knock on Britt has always been that he stinks in covering the pass. He improved in that this year quite a bit and looks like a quality starter.

  24. CleanHouse Says:

    Maybe he was hurt

  25. Crickett Baker Says:

There was no effective game plan, period, and it seemed like no one was having fun. That includes the fans.

  26. Cover deuce Says:

Devin’s just not that good and he hasn’t been since at least the SB run. I don’t understand why you guys seem so confused about it. Britt is a flawed player in coverage and then again so is Devin, only Britt doesn’t miss as many tackles in the run game, doesn’t overrun his gaps, and plays with 110% effort. It’s extremely easy to understand the thought process there.

  27. Nprbuc Says:

Come on Joe. Last in the league in pass defense does NOT earn any DC the title of “ guru”

  28. Since76 Says:

Jack Clark -bellichick is a career losing coach without Brady. He’s no guru.

  29. Capt. Tim Says:

The longer White has played, the less he believes in team defense, and the more he thinks he can physically control a game.
Hes wrong, like SOOOO many before him.
We only noticed White, because of how great his abilities are.

He hurts the team many times in every game. And he wil never understand it.
Because he lacks the most important skill. Intelligence.

  30. orlbucfan Says:

Guess Lt. Dan is a Defensive guru, so he needs to drop off a physical resume at OBP.

  31. orlbucfan Says:

Good riddance to D. White. Give the extra coin to LVD, Licht and Glazers.

  32. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

And Josh Allen of the Jags has racked up 16.5 sacks with one game to go. If you recall, Allen was drafted 2 spots after our Devin White. Hindsight is such a painful thing.

  33. Buccos Says:

@Senor – yes but White was crucial in our Super Bowl run. If we drafted Josh Allen we might not have won. Great Allen had better stats this year. Don’t miss the big picture

He missed so many tackles. Shorts a** arms. Let him walk!
    ^^^^^^^
Luke Kuechly’s arm length: 31 inches
Devin White’s arm length: 32-1/8 inches

I agree about the missed tackles 💯, but it’s a lot more wrong with White’s game than just arm length.

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Here I thought Brit was filling in for David yesterday…

  36. Rich Says:

Joe…get off your freakin love affair with this mediocre ( at best) player!!!! He is NOT, REPEAT, NOT even a good NFL linebacker. His play yesterday was atrocious and Bowles did something he should have done a cpl years ago. The terrible coverage, the poor tackling always around the shoulders, the amount of plays he’s out of position, the overrunning of plays….need I say more cuz there is more? He stinks over the past 3 years bit makes a gimme interception and an easy block free sack and you’re back saying how great he is… total BS!!!!! OH, don’t forget the next block he sheds will be his 1st one…

  37. Irish Laughter Says:

Joe has a history of tearing down players, who just a few years ago played lights out during the play offs and super bowl. Have those players changed or has the leadership on the team changed. Mayfield is the fire (according to the Tampa Bay Times) so where was the fire on Sunday. Yes, I believed Brady gave us the blue print for being a successful organization and a championship team. Mayfield has lived up to those standards and is a fighter, but like Brady in his last season, stats don’t necessarily win games. The team has to be doing their job 100% of the time. Sorry Joe, you continue to be way off evaluating our Bucs.

  38. Burt Wells Says:

We’re not a good team. Kills me to say it. Truth hurts. Go Bucs!!

  39. Rick Says:

Everyone is talking playoffs – but as a lifelong Tampa native and Buc fan – I’m quite weary of crappy Carolina! I know how bad we can be!

    Bowles sucks!

  40. Noles Says:

Josh Allen was pick but the Bucs got cute and drafted speed. DE are harder to find

  41. TomBucsFan Says:

Go Bucs, but this guy gotta go!
