Kyle Trask Has “A Great Look In His Eye”

November 30th, 2023

Eye of the tiger.

Cue the Rocky III theme music!

Buccaneers backup quarterback Kyle Trask has his own mob of Bucs fans that think he’s the next Kirk Cousins.

Trask, 25, got his first big-game snaps, albeit only two, on Sunday against the Colts and impressed Joe and others with a sweet back-of-the-end-zone throw that Chris Godwin couldn’t control. Trask talked to Joe after the game about his readiness and the Bucs’ confidence in him.

Today, offensive coordinator Dave Canales weighed in on Trask’s emergency entry when Baker Mayfield tweaked his ankle.

Canales praised Trask’s poise and confidence, and the strong throw to Godwin. And Canales seemed to see an intangible for Trask that made him think the Bucs were status quo of Mayfield couldn’t return.

“Love that Kyle just went in, was just calm. He was cool,” Canales said. “He had a great look in his eye, and I felt like if Baker can’t go, I love how [Kyle] looks right now going forward with the rest of the game plan.”

Confidence!

Joe expects to see Trask start a game later this season if the Bucs can’t win their next two games against the Panthers and Falcons.

With the Bucs having a 6-7 record and a 3-1 record in the division after those wins, Trask wouldn’t have a shot to be a starter. But if it’s anything less, then Joe could see Team Glazer ordering a Code Gator to see what they have in Trask.

Remember when Jamyth threw that TD pass at the end of a already terrible season and cost the Bucs a higher draft slot?

We’re talking about the back-up?! Man, I need something to drink!

  3. Boss Says:

I hear ya bucsfan. I picked the wrong year to quit drinkin!

might as well give him a shot….lets see what he’s got…baker is who we thought he was…undersized and average at best….

    GO BUCS!!!!

Bucsfanman My Man, I’m Back!!!!!! Let the Dude play, Baker hasn’t really shown me anything and he’s had plenty of time. J O M O (Just One Man’s Opinion). Missed You Brother ! LOL

  6. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

What I saw was that the pass was a fraction wide but any shorter and it’s knocked down. Coverage was pretty good. Godwin got 1 foot in and the other was close.

Anyhow, I hope he gets a real chance. It’s worth it to learn how he would perform as a starter.

  7. Jeff Says:

Let’s pray the Bucs lose out and land a top 3 pick. Gotta get that stud QB. Let’s get BB from the Pats to coach em up.

whats to cry about? Life is goood. Bake was full practice yesterday and Canales just confirmed AGAIN kyle is the BACK UP

Canales – “and I felt like IF BAKER CAN’T GO, I love how [Kyle] looks right now ”

Plus lol why is Canales so uncertain on Kyle? “I love how kyle looks NOW? hmmmmmm

P.S. How many more user names you going to make up to make it look like theres more Kyle cultists than there are?

  9. Vlad The Impaler Says:

One thing left to do this season:
Bench Mayfield and start Kyle Trask ffs.
    That is all.
    The time has come.
Mayfield is who PK thought he was.

  10. SlyPirate Says:

“I love the look in his eye. He has that same look when I ask him to fetch me water or hold my tablet. You can tell he’s a seasoned benchwarmer. He knows exactly how to handle being overlooked for some journeyman vet. You see that poise, that confidence we’ll never let him play. I love the look in his eye.”

    -Dave Canales on Trask

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

Baker is not good. He’s a slightly below average QB and he’s proving it again. Just give the keys to the second round pick and see if the Bucs need to draft a QB next year or not.

  12. Duane in Sanford Says:

Bowles has seen that look a thousand times, and still he doesnt start.

  13. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucs fan . That’s just make to much sense for this fan base. They care more about what college the quarterback went to like UF or FSU more than the team having a franchise quarterback.

  14. Since76 Says:

The Mayfield experiment went as most in the media thought it would. Nowhere. Ide like to see if Trask is any good before we sink capital in a rookie QB.

  15. Let em bake Says:

The experiment us just in its infancy…

  16. The Dave Says:

I’d like to find a list of backup QBs who went on to have great careers either with their own team or elsewhere in the NFL. Hell, Tampa has one – Steve Young. The NFL is littered with QBs who didn’t get a shot until circumstances permitted and then the world found out they were awesome. Tom Freakin’ Brady was one – anyone remember Drew Bledsoe? Didn’t Ken Stabler sit on the bench for four years? Didn’t Jim Plunkett, and he won two Super Bowls coming off the bench. Kurt Warner was a third-stringer, and now he’s in the HOF. Kirk Cousins was a fourth rounder who has had a longer career and played better than his first round counterpart. At this point, there is zero harm in giving the kid a shot. The season is over. Even if we win the division Dallas or Seattle will eat our first round lunch. We need to be playing for the future. I say we bench Batted Ball Mayfield and see what Trask can do before the draft. What do we have to lose? Another game or three? We will anyway! Get him in there!

  17. stpetebucfan Says:

“The Mayfield experiment went as most in the media thought it would. Nowhere.”

Yep the media thought the Bucs would go 2-15! Yep if the D had shown up in Houston or Indianapolis and against Atlanta the Bucs would/should be 7-4 with a lock on the Division. Surely even the most ardent Trask nuthugger has to admit the Bucs absolutely should be at minimum

I think the Trask zealots make one major mistake. It’s been said you don’t make your own furniture look any better by trashing your neighbors furniture.

I have nothing against Trask. But Trask has a short career at Florida on his resume. Mayfield has an appearance in the playoffs and a first round win over a hated rival! That difference is enough to make me trust the coaches.

The Trask fanboys who come here and make his case by simply insulting Baker’s accomplishments lead one to believe that Trask has NO accomplishments, no real reason to support him other than he is the lesser of two evils!

AGAIN…2 things can be true at the same time. Mayfield COULD eventually reprise his Cleveland achievement and take another team to the playoffs.
That doesn’t mean that Trask could not also find a spot and become successful with the Bucs or another team.

Even though I believe Mayfield should be the starter (experience/achievement) I hope the Traskers are at least right about his ability. What team can’t use 2 QB’s. The freaking 49ers had 3 to start last year. Jimmy G…(Mayfield) Trey Lance(only a 2nd rounder for Trask) a first round draft pick that cost 3 first rounders and the LAST man drafted who turned out to be the answer.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    The Dave Says
“I’d like to find a list of backup QBs who went on to have great careers either with their own team or elsewhere in the NFL.”

That is a long list, when you consider many had bridge QBs first.

  19. Beeej Says:

“Baker is not good. He’s a slightly below average QB ….”

ACTually, he’s slightly ABOVE average, so…. yeah

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

Still think we should start Trask against the Panthers. What have we got to lose?
But we will probably trot Baker out there to further injure his ankle which is not heeled.

  21. WyomingJoe Says:

CALIFORNIA DREAMING: The only look that Trask has in his eyes is fear! Looks like he’s ready to cry. He had a chance to show what he has and he choked! Let’s face it, Godwin had a step on his defender and Trask was late and long. Trask is exactly where he should be, on the bench…

  22. Hodad Says:

Trask has one more year left on his contract. That’s one more year then Bowles, and maybe Jason Licht have, since one, or both will be fired. We’ll see what the new H.C., and maybe G.M. think of Trask next year. That’s right Joe Buc fans, this debate will carry on next year.

  23. Watch More All-22 Before Commenting Says:

Did he like the look of the INT that was saved by the refs?

  24. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Beej – QB’s are measured by wins. His career NFL record as a starter is 35-45 which is a 38% winning percentage. He’s basically a shorter Steve Deberg.

  25. Tb Bolts Says:

All the clowns on here riding baker when he’s one for the last seven. Its like liberals who voted for brandon even though he’s clearly worthless. “Idc what we get as long as my side is playing the game”

  26. Let em bake Says:

When baker re- signs, will the traskites commit blog suicide and leave? I hope not. I enjoy the seethe and cope of it all😊

  27. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Let Em Bake – I’d boycott the season. Not because I want Trask to start but because Mayfield isn’t the answer at QB. He’s a bridge, a stop gap, a celebrity name with apparently a like-able personality attached. Not a winner though

  28. Confido75 Says:

I bet Bowles puts Trask in and blames his garbage coaching on BM and Trask to save his job after this season. He blamed Sponge Bob last year. Sponge Bob is somewhere LFAO right now thankful he was fired and got off the Toilet Bowles Dumpster Fire Express when he did.

  29. DBS Says:

TB bolts. I bet you put all the losses the Lightning have on the goalie too.

  30. Let em bake Says:

A Bucs fan: I appreciate the principled stance. As a self -admitted baker boy, if somehow he’ll freezes over and baker doesn’t re sign, I will find myself camped in the Steelers, falcons, or patriots blog … but I hope not. I enjoy the joes effort in this site, look forward to reading it daily, and I enjoy Ira and his podcast .

  31. MegaFailure Says:

    START HIM ALREADY!

  32. Craig Says:

Baker could be the scapegoat after this game. He has been going downhill since that 3-1 start. His long ball is even more erratic and he has forgotten how to dump the ball to avoid a sack.

If he makes fourth grade errors again, he might get called for it by someone other than the fans.

  33. lanshark Says:

I LOVE how all you fools think a QB can take a team with no running game, weak/absent defense, poor o-line in the middle, and somehow make them win more than 4 games. At least 3 of the losses this season are on the Defense, not the Offense. IF those three flip, we’re 7-4, and looking good for playoffs. But somehow, Baker didn’t make the tackle or int that would have saved those 3 games.

SMH – you guys are smoking the same thing most of the MAGA-tites are…

  34. UKBuccaneer Says:

Zero problem with starting Trask to see what we have once were mathematically eliminated from the postseason. Until then, stick with the experienced QB1 who’s having his best season since 2020.

Trask is basically a rookie, and he’s gonna make a ton of rookie errors (especially behind this o-line). Putting him in now is setting him up to fail.

  35. Bojim Says:

    Let him play.

  36. Chickster Says:

We need to just start over Baker not it the coaching isn’t it and the gm was made to look good Brady Brady Brady Stary over

Exactly what I saw too. At this point I hope Trask plays so his loyalists get to see what the coaches do in every practice for the last 3 years. Comical at this point

  38. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The occult of Trask member comments are hilarious. These mental giants are still bringing up the Saints horrible back up quarterback as if that has any relevance. These are the same delusional clowns that still think Tebow should be starting somewhere.

  39. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Perfect time to start Trask. Mayfield lacking mobility won’t work out well, and you could probably beat the Panthers with a Jones at QB

  40. Duane in Sanford Says:

I agree with the sensible fan that says it doesnt matter who the quartback is, this team is still a mess. What signal caller is going to turn this around? We had the GOAT last year and a guy we paid $4million to not play quarterback this season. No run game, lots of dead cap money, and a defense that declines as the season wears on. Save Trask the embarrassment. He has been door number 3 for his entire career. There is a reason for that.

  41. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

@Let em bake dont rule out the Raiders. Old Baker could be a coast to coast pirate

  42. Doug Says:

Ok, so Baker hasn’t been all that bad, but he does have some limitations. A little short and sometimes he makes bad throws, probably should have a few more pics, but he’s been lucky a little bit. Now there are some that believe Trask actually won out in the off season, after he got some reps in. I would love to see Trask get some playing time with the first string offense. What if he does really good who’s going to have egg on there face? I don’t think Bowles has the testosterone to play him with his job. Either way Trask does Bowles losses.

  43. Lynchmob47 Says:

It’s only a matter of time. Baker knows it, hence why he came back in on a hurt ankle, hence why he is practicing and starting this week..He knows if Kyle goes in, he’s out for good. I’m over Todd. He has made every bad decision a person could make in the role of HC. He can’t get himself out of this, winning a few more with Baker or giving Trask a shot. He took to long making that decision. He is a slow thinker. He is bad with math, and clock management. He is inconsistent but yet consistently bad. He is just not HC material. He needs to go. The glazer should try something different and fier him now. Trask deserves a shot. We deserve to see what we drafted. Kyle will be fine wherever he plays next.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

I can’t wait until week 17, when the 5-11 Bucs go on the road to Carolina, and Bowles tells us that it’s time to make a change at QB.

  45. Capt2fish Says:

That look in Trask’s eye is him making sure Baker isn’t signaling for Trask to bring him a juicebox.

  46. Since76 Says:

I really wish I could see what some of you see in Mayfield. I just see someone trying as hard as he can and just doesn’t have enough. I feel bad for the guy. Really wish he had more skills but he is not getting you anywhere in the playoffs. He can’t raise his game and there lies his problem.

  47. Hunter Says:

If only he started all year and we had the same headline this late in the season…if only

Well you need to have the personality traits of a stalker, and be mentally incompetent and think people on the TV doing commercials are your friends, then you can start to see what they see. They think he actually lives in the stadium and they’re going to defend him no matter what … because they love him, and he loves them.

Personally I think Bruce Gradkowski tried harder, and he didn’t throw his teammates under the bus like Baker did this last weekend.

People very much underestimate the power of commercials on the mentally ill – those commercials made Baker their friend, and they will not let anyone ever say anything bad about their friend, and they’ll go to Bakers house to let him know how much they have defended him from cyberbullies. Now when Baker doesn’t answer the door and the cops show-up, they’ll make the sure the cops know that Baker is their friend, and how dare the cops get in the way of their friendship.

But you do realize that Mayfield LIVEd at the Factory of Sadness when he was with the Browns, right? That is dedication…and he seems like a nice guy

    Start Kyle Trask now!!

  55. Jake Says:

We’re already pretty dead here man, and what if Kyle went in there and did something? I’m hoping we can have a chance to maybe get a qb. We need a couple people who can really make something happen in the secondary bad. The defense is failing because they are on the field two thirds of the game even the best athlete gets tired. Nuff Said..

  56. RGA Says:

Bench the retread Mayfield, let’s see what Trask can do.
I can’t imagine the Bucs are going to run the gimpy Mayfield out there again. The guy who struggles to complete a forward pass beyond 10 yards. Waisting away two great receivers with Mayfield at the helm.

  57. Let em Bake Says:

Rod Munch: Interesting theory. I became a baker fan as a result of colin Cowherd constantly bashing him. It always felt over the top, almost personal. I didnt get the Manzel comparisons, and even before this year, he said Bake should just retire to the booth ( because he sucks so much). The short-sightedness of that opinion is the same thing I see here. We know hes not Brady, but this guy was one called-back touchdown from playing in the afc title game. We just want to see Baker , with a compliment of a decent defense a run game, like he had in Cleveland, before he wrecked his shoulder. If, given that, he messes that up, then move on from him…

  58. Bucsfanman Says:

A “Tandyman” sighting!!! What’s going on my good man?

On Trask I have a different opinion. I just don’t see it. And for those bashing Baker, we’d have a much better record if our defenses hadn’t crapped the bed and you can’t argue that. So is Baker “that bad”? Or, is he what he is, a decent starter?

  59. JD Still Says:

The worst long ball completion percentage in the league, this is a surprise to who?Look , Mayfield is what he is , he is not going to suddenly get significantly better, as six years has shown , what you have is a sub-500 career qb. I am glad Canales finally got to see Kyle in a game situation and his eyes were opened, Kyle suddenly being thrust into a game that counted , the coolness under pressure , no meltdown when a penalty was called , the outstanding pocket presence, not a hint of panic, no happy feet, he saw the whole field , he got the ball out on time, no tips, put the ball exactly where it had to be put ,in a tight window , with no hesitation , and when it wasn’t caught , once again , did not have a melt down , just went on to what had to be done next, those are things that cannot be taught , either you have it in your makeup or you don’t , and Kyle has it.

  60. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

We are in a losing season with no virtually chance to the make the playoffs. Why not see if Trask is a capable starting QB. Silly to draft a QB in the second round without giving him any chance to prove he belongs in this league.

  61. Glass used to be Half Full Guy Says:

That “sweet, back of the end zone throw” was late and a tad high and no way Godwin comes down with it in bounds. It had a nice spiral and was put in a place where the defender couldn’t touch it but it was barely enough for Godwin to get his fingertips on it.

A second earlier and a little lower and maybe it would have been “sweet”. No way was any blame on Godwin for “not controlling it”.

    Nice spiral though.

  62. Deuce McGoose Says:

I Like Trask, think he has potential, he’s wasting away with the bucs organization.
Trade him where he can make a difference…., Jets? Patriots?
Bucs will never use him as nothing more than back up (Jimmy G?) and the clock is ticking on his career.
Let the kid go to a team that will actually use him…., not as back up.

  63. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Again Says:

Bucsfanman My Man!! I’ll hang with you just a bit longer on Baker because your my man. But it’s time to go Brother. Lose to Carolina and you gotta get on Board with me on Trask. Ok Bet!!! Letsssssss Gooooooo

  64. Capt.Tim Says:

Trask seems like a nice kid. A good teammate.
He played his ass off at UF, and made the most of his talent.

But didnt any of you watch him at practice, or in the preseason?
The kid processes too slow. He was making bad decisions againt guys that are movers and insurance salesmen today.

And his arm is so weak, NFL Secondaries are gonna be taking those balloons to the house.
How can you not have seen that?

The kid wont ever be an NFL QB.
Its ok Kyle, neither will I. Or any of the unwashed mass of clueless posters.
If Baker misses more than a few plays- they’ll tell Trask to fake an injury- so Woolford can get in there.
    Watch and see.

Trask is another horrible second round miss- like Jason Licht has become infamous for.

Hows about shutting up, let the Kid hold the clipboard for a few years.
Itll give you something to talk about, while hes calculating your homeowner’s bundle discount.

Or, he plays. And has to live down those horrible SportsCenter clips for the rest of his life.

Go watch the Preson games again. But Sober this time. Youll see what I mean

  65. Larrd Says:

The exact wrong thing to say about a young backup QB while trying to right the ship with a veteran.

    “He has the gleam!”

    Canales seems almost naive.

  66. G Buc Says:

Godwin dropped the pass … fact.

Trask dropped a dime … fact.

Can’t trust this staff to evaluate talent (see JTS)… fact.

For those of you who point to trusting this coaching staff, i believe there are several poles to prove otherwise… fact.

  67. Oneilbuc Says:

Capt. The only problem with your take is Kyle Trask out played Baker Mayfield in Training camp. He prove he was better than Baker Mayfield so why not give him a chance ? That’s why I believe that Todd Bowles made a bad move my bringing Baker in . Especially a quarterback that’s a proven backup at best and now he has no excuse for not winning but with Trask if he’s a bad quarterback he would have had a good excuse for not winning.

  68. Big Red Says:

Yes, Trask one pass. Good look in the eye. I seen it. Baker had that look in his eye that his career in Tampa was about to be over and he rushed back onto the field.

Let the Gator play. Nothing to lose. Outside of an impressive stretch and a deep playoff run, we’re not resigning Baker. Let’s see what the 2nd round pick has got and hope that’s it’s not another Aguayo or Noah Spence.

  69. Bbro Says:

I’m not sure why they didn’t let Trask finish the game out last week. Maybe the coaches are saying here you go Mayfield get us to the playoffs or?

  70. JD Still Says:

I read where Mayfield signed for 4 million dollars base pay that can go up to eight million with performance incentives, one of which is that he has to take 85 percent of the snaps during the season, 85 percent of 17 games would be roughly fourteen and one half games he needs to take the snaps in , so if they are helping Mayfield out by letting him hobble onto the field to get sacked ,intercepted and lose fumbles in order to get his extra money, so be it ! If that is the case , We shouldn’t expect to see Kyle get any significant playing time until midway through game 15 at the earliest ! The question We Bucs fans need to ask is Why?

  71. Tj Says:

Wow, so you’re literally backing up my point then, you became his white knight because others were picking on him, and you were going to stand up for him no matter what, to defend him from all the bullies who point out that he’s a bust.

As for Baker, he one had good year, when he had the best running game in football, and a top 3 offensive line, and was asked just to not lose the game. Then, in his big game vs the Chiefs that every Baker fan drools over – well, Baker lost – to the Chiefs backup QB.

    No thanks. Next.
