Aqib Talib: Mike Evans Should Play For The Lions

September 2nd, 2023

Chimes in on Mike Evans drama.

Yes, it has come to this. Folks are trying to cherry-pick where Mike Evans should be playing, if not this year certainly next.

We all know about the drama with Mike Evans and his contract situation. It’s just sad no matter how you slice it.

In part, because few (none?) outside the Tampa Bay area think the Bucs will do anything this fall, folks think the Bucs ought to do Evans a solid and trade him to a contender rather than toy with the guy and string him along only to wave goodbye to him in March.

Joe wants Evans to stay with the Bucs badly, but if he must go, Joe would want Evans to go to an AFC contender with an excellent quarterback where his streak of 1,000-yard seasons could continue. Imagine Evans playing opposite Calvin Ridley having Trevor Lawrence throwing him the rock in Jacksonville? Yes, the thought of Evans in another uniform makes Joe want to puke.)

One such person who has Evans’ back (?) is former Bucs corner Aqib Talib. He hopped on Kay Adams’ show, “Up and Adams” seen weekday mornings on FanDuel TV, and said he wants to see Evans play for Detroit.

The Lions have a high-powered offense, a decent quarterback, should be a contender and have a top-shelf coach, Talib said. He believes Evans can still ball out and will ball out with Jared Goff throwing him the rock.

That is what all of this drama has come to. People are trying to place Evans on various teams. That’s how little respect the Bucs have outside Tampa. They believe the Bucs are a fire sale waiting to happen.

You can see Talib explain why Evans should play for the Lions in the FanDuel TV video below.

And Talib & Family should play for The Mean Machine…

  2. SB Says:

Unfortunately this isn’t the First time Aqib has lost his mind.

  3. BillyBucco Says:

I actually thought about this today.
Mike probably knows that in this offense, as a run first team, West Coast offenses don’t usually have 2 1,000 yd receivers. I’m sure Godwin will get the Lions share of targets when it comes to WRs.
Can Mike break 1,000 here? When TEs and RBs also get so many balls? When a Cade Otton run is now in the cards?
Yeah, maybe this year, but what about when these young guns show out this year.
I honestly believe as much as I like Mike, his chasing of the record is more important than the team. I actually think a sit down with Canales and Baker would solve a ton. This team can be whatever it needs to be and a convo would go a long way towards improving his odds of it happening.
He approved his agent saying it because even getting traded now to a team like Detroit would help his individual goals as a down field passing team.
In fact without that system basically being all he has ever been a part of, would he have broke the record?
If he gets 7 targets and catches 5 every game, 10 yard passes won’t get it done. Especially if they are giving the deep threats to Palmer and Jarrett.

  4. westernbuc Says:

It’s actually not a bad fit but Aqib, stop talking! The man needs to stay in Tampa.

If he had to go somewhere, I’d be much more accepting of chiefs, bills, or bengals. Maybe Jets.

But like I was saying, pay the man

  5. Ricki Says:

    Trade him for Jonathan Taylor

  6. kgh4life Says:

    @Ricki

That’s not a bad idea. The colts definitely have the cap space, however, the Bucs would now have to sign Taylor to a new contract. Not as much as Evans but it’s a lot of money in a league where the RB position has been devalued.

  7. Cleanhouse Says:

Even thinking about coming down to Bowleslevel of misery makes me ill

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘THEY believe the Bucs are a fire sale waiting to happen.’

Is this what the media has become nowadays? The proverbial ‘THEY’ is now dictating what’s relevant in THE NEWS? No place in any local or national sports news that I’ve read has the phrase ‘FIRE SALE’ come up. But now ‘THEY’ have decided that our Bucs are soooo bad that a fire sale is imminent? Really?

When teams have fire sales it usually involved multiple players.
And they seem to have them for 2 primary reasons: (1) to divest themselves of very expensive (aka, good) players to get their financial house in order; and/or (2) to ‘rebuild’ & ‘go in a different direction’ (get younger, faster, bigger, whatever). The Bucs have essentially done both already via retirements (Brady, Gronk, etc), not renewing certain veterans’ contracts (Suh, JPP, Fournette, Whitehead … the list goes on & on), and drafting a bunch of younger players who fit what the current hierarchy wants to do (23 players of our 53-man team are first or second-year guys, and another 13 are third or fourth-year guys).

Having a ‘fire sale’ on the remaining 17 players literally makes zero sense because of their Dead CAP ‘cost’. Which team is gonna trade for Mike Evans AND pick up his remaining Dead CAP hit considering that this is his last year under contract with us? Same goes for Shaq (another high $$$ player) with a high Dead CAP hit. Even Devin White’s in the same situation. And it makes even less sense to ‘fire sale’ players like Davis, Dean, etc. We’d end up losing quality players but eating a bunch of Dead CAP.

The Bucs have a competitive team RIGHT NOW. At least as competitive as our salary CAP situation allows. We’ve got a good coaching staff to teach these young players how to be pro’s. The proverbial ‘THEY’ needs to stop chumming the water.

  9. Bucschamp Says:

    Mike Evans to Saints confirmed

  10. Irishmist Says:

Generally not a good idea to take advice from someone who literally shoots themselves in the foot.

  11. Joshua porter Says:

Yeah this won’t be a distraction all year at all ……. Truly surprised that Mike and the team would even let it get to this ….. let’s go bucs do the right thing and get this done…. go bucs

  12. Fred McNeil Says:

I guess I might be ok with trading Evans for Taylor…maybe. isn’t Taylor hurt, though? To be honest. I’d rather resign Mike for two or three seasons with voidable years. If he holds out all year does he not lose a year towards free agency? Even if that’s not true I think we can shave that money off our cap for this year. Still, I doubt he will hold out all year. Or at all.

  13. garro Says:

Didn’t know that a week before opening day was the beginning of slimeball season! First Mikes agent now Talib and apparently others.

Talib giving advice? Where is the best place to go to punch cab drivers might be more suitable.

    Go Bucs!

  14. garro Says:

BTW Kay You are better than this. Not a good look for you at all, appearing anywhere near this thug.

    Go Bucs!

  15. Drunkinybor Says:

Blah blah blah… he has a contract now. When did the NFL become the NBA. Dude be a leader. Ball out the money will come. Honestly this majes me hesitant to resign him. If ge us this worried about getting his bag this instant. Maybe he knows his best days are behind him and doesn’t want to go out and show it.

  16. PbnJ Says:

Dead cap costs do not travel. They’re dead. No team trading for Evans will assume debt the Bucs already accumulated but haven’t accounted for against the cap. In fact, trading a player escalates that dead cap hit for the original team.

Trade Evans if we start poorly. Acquire draft capital to use in case we don’t finish 31st or worst. Use that capital to trade up for Caleb or Drake.

  17. BUCS4LIFE Says:

I don’t think we should even be talking about this. That is all. Go Bucs!

  18. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

If Evans wants top dollar for his services I don’t blame him. This IS a business and his next contract probably will be his last. But he’s on a team at present that is doing most of its shopping at the Dollar Store. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see them coming to an agreement.

The Bucs have Chris Godwin and some really promising young players they could move up the depth chart if needed. And they still have David Moore on the practice squad as well. It will be easier for the Bucs to replace Evans than it will be to replace Wirfs, Winfield, or White. And by signing Evans it will make it more difficult for them to keep all of the others.

  19. DS Says:

Can we get at least a 1st?

  20. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

ME is a straight up baller and a pillar of the community. Tough call here for Bucs as their money situation is not good , but ME has always been a team guy as evidenced by redoing his contract THREE TIMES . ME will play and play well as he always does , so Bucs fan better enjoy it , because it may be the last hurrah for ME in a Bucs uni.

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

    2 things:

    1) Anyone who has listened to Talib talk knows he has a 3rd grade education.

    2) Detroit is a sh!thole.

  22. DBS Says:

Son of Trask give it up. No there is no WE all. And your frozen reference to OBJ is a slap at Mayfield is not hard to get. You are pissed and sour your daddy did not the starter. Get over it. 1 TD against scrubs in playing in each of the last 2 games did not show he should be a starter. And you can’t use the excuse “well he only had. ” Other quarterbacks only have also.

  23. Doug Says:

    Trade him!!

  24. Duane in Sanford Says:

If he is good enough to play for contenders why isnt he good enough for this team? We are going to give $15-20 million each to Diva and Winfield and tell Mike to take a hike? Better hope Winfield doesnt hit his head again. Its a Bucs life.

  25. Drew Says:

Let it all play out. Jeesh!!! No one has a clue.

  26. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    Talib hardly speaks English

We’re going to soon need to extend White, Winfield, Wirfs, and if Baker has a good year we’ll need to pay him about 20 million/year.

When the goat arrived the Bucs went all-in to win a SuperBowl and then bring everyone back the following year in an attempt to go back-to-back. It seemed at the time that 99.9% of Bucs fans were on board with that. But there were consequences for that strategy that would have a huge impact on the salary cap in years to come and now the team has to dig itself out of a hole by shopping at the Dollar Store. Patience is a virtue. And it’s time for Bucs fans to have some.

  28. Pewter Power Says:

So basically have to play Evans on throwback Sunday? Nah this franchise isn’t dumb enough to do that but maybe because they are playing hardball with Evans of all people

  29. NE Fan Says:

Right on!!! Talib is 100% correct. Evan’s needs to get away from this dumpster 🔥!!!

  30. Ed Says:

Pay the Man, just like yall paid Brady and Jenson.

  31. Buddha Says:

Joe, you are not a GM? You have made some good calls and some not so good. You are fan, but this summer you have been leaning more and more toward conspiracy theories. The Lions built a contender by getting a QB everyone was trashing. Sound familiar? Baker will do the same. The Lions had a horrible draft.. Mike isn’t going anywhere. If he leaves now, he will never make the Hall of Fame.

  32. Since76 Says:

Sad to see him go but we are in rebuilding mode. If we could get a 1 or 2. I say take it. Let him get his money

  33. adam from ny Says:

evans could win up in ny if rodgers thinks he needs a receiver at some point…

    how weird would that be…geez…

jets have the cap space to squeeze him in…

they are going to eventually use the cap space on some kind of upgrade or injury fix, for a potential playoff run

    ^^^^^^^
He can get paid in Tampa, too…If you’ve already given up on the season, go pick dandelions or kick rocks.

  35. Mike C Says:

Ne fan, let us know when your team wins a SB without Brady.

  36. Mike C Says:

    How’s your brother Aqib?

  37. DBS Says:

    LMFAO.
Thanks for that Son of Trask. .I have been here as long as this site has. You as long as Trask. And you did not dispute anything. You changed your name twice this week already. You are a Trask fan only. I am a Bucs fan and support all the players. That is Backups included
I guarantee you Mike Evans has no problem with Baker Mayfield. He is thinking strictly money .
.If and when Trask leaves you will disappear.

  38. NE Fan Says:

Mike C, right back at ya. NE could use a #1 WR send Evan’s over. Like the Bucs until Belichick leaves Pat’s going no where! Time for a change. Oh and by the way FO!!!

  39. Infomeplease Says:

BillyBucco says. “Mike probably knows that in this offense, as a run first team, West Coast offenses don’t usually have 2 1,000 yd receive”.

Billi, This offense mostly comes from the one Seattle has been running!!! THEY HAD 2 – 1000 yard receivers last season!!! MK13 is not concerned at all!!! If he managed 1000 + last season with that crappy offense…expect 1100-1200 from him easily!

Evans has $24 million reasons, a career, family and home to explain why it is difficult for him to walk away. NE, what’s your excuse why you can’t quit us Brokeback boy? Anyone who extols advice from Talib, is a fool.

  41. steele Says:

Don’t you guys miss the days when insane nasties like Aquib and LeG Blount wor the uniform?

  42. TonySoprano Says:

3 years for $80M is ridiculous. But if Mike’s agent is saying the Bucs haven’t been willing to discuss/negotiate at all? That I understand would be insulting to Mike. At his level, he doesn’t want to go into a season with zero future assurances.

  43. Sly Pirate Says:

Remember when Talib shot himself in the leg?

We are listening to a guy smart enough to shoot himself in the leg!!!!

  44. NE Fan Says:

Chibut, Talib will forget far for football than you will ever learn. Not only was he a pro, he was a great one. He has the rings to prove it.

  45. Mike C Says:

Ne fan, Bucs have a superbowl without Brady……

  46. Mike C Says:

    Pats…… not so much

  47. Divis Says:

Keep Mike. Johnny Wilson to the Bucs.

  48. Mike C Says:

Why don’t you F O this web site Mass hole!

  49. MelvinJunior Says:

I was thinking this just two weeks ago, Bucco… That Mike isn’t getting the ball. Baker canNOT throw deep… He can’t see over the line in order to do so. And, was wondering has Baker EVER had a 1000yd Receiver in his NFL Career!? I don’t know and don’t care enough to actually, even look up LoL.

Also, about 2-3 days before Mike went public on twitter/X… Cowturd was already, projecting/dreaming about him with Rodgers in NY!!!! Love him or hate him he DOES have lots of contacts with big-time insiders and GM’s all across the league, so it got my eyes raised as soon as I heard him (just so confidently), saying that… I KNEW THEN, that something had been going on behind the scenes there, with Big-Mike.
