No Scorecard System In Place For The QB Competition

July 27th, 2023

Todd Bowles

As much as the Bucs (and most teams) are into analytics, it seems there is no custom software at One Buc Palace to score the blossoming Tampa Bay quarterback competition.

Joe asked head coach Todd Bowles today if there is some sort of finite grading system in place for the Baker Mayfield-Kyle Trask competition so the team can study grading data after, say, a week.

Joe was not implying a number grade should determine a winner, only asking if the Bucs had crafted a system for assessing the totality of performance.

“No. We get together as a staff. We don’t just grade quarterbacks right now. We grade everybody. So I can’t come in here off the field and say, ‘Kyle did good or Baker did good,’ or one thing or the other,” Bowles said.

“I look at the whole practice as its entiretly. Probably around my fifth or sixth time watching the tape and we start evalutating positions, we just take notes and we see who can do what and who put what where and kind of go from there. And we do that as as group.”

So there you go. There’s no password-protected file grading every aspect of QB play for Team Glazer to log in and see who is leading the race.

For those who do like to keep score, Bowles noted the Bucs didn’t score at all in their 2-minute offense at today’s practice.

so, another day at the office lol

  2. JD Still Says:

I think it’s good there is no “scorecard” system, that seems to put a ceiling in place , a goal to be reached, when the goal should be a constant striving to be better no matter how good you become.

  3. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

To be fair, Bowles dont like scoring in the two minute offense anyways.

  4. SufferingSince76 Says:

Didn’t Canales say it would be whomever protected the ball the best or something to that effect?

  5. Mosey Says:

Why be fake Baker is the quarterback period. You guys play too many games with people mental health.

  6. HC Grover Says:

    Bowles Curse

  7. Mike S Says:

Mosey Trask is going to win this job. Mentally prepare yourself for that.

  8. Show Me the TDs Says:

Bucs don’t have a QB scoring system. No kidding! Haha

Sounds to me like Bowles said that they ALL watch the film , over and over again. That seems to be a way of keeping track of what each position is doing. I think that is the best way. But I’m just a fan , I don’t know anything about evaluating a NFL player. May the best man win is all I want. Go Bucs

I bet some assistant is keeping a scorecard. Canales already said he would basically look at TD/INT. Probably looking at red zone too. At this point in camp, the offense is focused on learning Canales system and the coaches are looking at the learning curve for everyone.

LOL, there is no system in place because there really is no real QB competition.
Mayfield came to Tampa to be our starting QB.
People tell me that Trask has been a huge disappointment since he came to Tampa.
Some of my football friends think this entire QB Competition is a total scam, designed to possibly inflate Trask’s trade value, and cover Jason Licht’s spending a high draft pick on Trask.
Mayfield will be our starting Quarterback, take it to the Bank.

    umm What?
    A grading system? Really?

I’m sure there are notes taken after every practice by somone at One Buc. Probably several someones.

    Go Bucs!
