Kyle Trask Worked With Bucs Receivers During The Offseason, Baker Mayfield Did Not

July 27th, 2023

Score the “W” for Kyle Trask.

It may not be worth much, but it does say something.

While patrolling training camp practice this week, Joe learned that competing quarterback Trask went outside of One Buc Palace to put in summer throwing work with tight ends Cade Otton, Payne Durham and Tanner Taula, along with Kaylon Geiger, Deven Thompkins and Kade Warner.

At least one more Buccaneer was in attendance but Joe can’t confirm the name. The work was described to Joe as multiple local sessions, organized and worthwhile.

Today, Joe asked Baker Mayfield if he worked with any Bucs receivers during the summer break after the team’s mandatory minicamp in June. Mayfield said he did not and noted he was at One Buc Palace all spring and got in quality work.

Throwing with teammates in July doesn’t earn a guy a starting QB job, but Joe was glad to hear Trask was involved. Every rep has the potential to make a difference.

Hope it translates to the field

  2. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Where were Evans and Godwin? I guess trying to stay healthy. But they’re so good they can play with anyone. I’m not worried about timing with those guys. Gage on the other hand….

  3. JD Still Says:

Kudos! It is the pre season work in June and July that will pay off in the December and January Postseason.

  4. Dooley Says:

    Atta’boy Kyle

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

Good job Kyle! Anything could happen, but after the first couple days of camp Im seeing more signs that indicate the organization is really behind Baker to start. Unless he does very poorly I think it’s his job to lose.

  6. Rick Says:

Kyle Trask working with camp meat sounds like what he will be doing on the scout team all year.

  7. brownie Says:

Mayfield was too busy reading about how great he is on JBF.

  8. D-Rok Says:

To me, this bespeaks initiative and leadership. Good job, Kyle!

  9. Hodad Says:

All you can ask. He knew better then to call Mike, and Chris. Get work with the young guys he’ll be playing with more. Baker is going to start, Kyle needs to be ready when called on. He’s working on it. My hope, both QBs look good.

  10. Tbbucs3 Says:

Wow amazing, he threw WRs at a park, like every QB does, maybe next we can get an article about if he ate lunch with them??…..hopefully the Trask fan girls don’t get too riled up today.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

    And he’s nimble.

  12. SufferingSince76 Says:

Good grief, you guys are so negative all the time. You should be rooting for the best man to win the job, but like so much else these days, you pick a side and denigrate the other. So childish and petty actions for supposed adults.

Class opens soon, even you can learn to be a hatin a** Bucs fan too lol it’s like bizzaro world on here sometimes

  14. Tbbucs3 Says:

Dooley, lmaooo the same ones who for threw nothing but hate for years and years at JW3 on here are now triggered because I comment on how meaningless this article is.

    Hypocrites.

  15. Dwayne Cone Says:

Does not matter who the receivers were. It was opportunities to hit moving targets and work on Mechanics and Accuracy. When Baker gets the reps with starters in the preseason Trask will be able to help make the young hopefuls look good and give them a chance at making the roster.

Glad to see Cade Otton was there because if Trask gets the nod you will see a lot of seam passes ala Gronk in 2023.

Trask was patient in College and waited for his opportunity. Now if he wants it he is going to have to go out and take it. Won’t be considered ‘laid back’ once he makes that transition.

  16. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    Don’t be upset Dooley.

  17. Oneilbuc Says:

This is not a real competition and we all know it . I don’t care if a quarterback throws picks in practice every quarterback is going to throw picks in practice. It’s the best time to throw them to see what you can get away with and what you can’t get away with. So I will just wait until the game starts because I’m sure Brady, Payton Manning, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen all have threw picks in practice.

  18. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

SOUNDS LIKE KYLE TOOK A PAGE OUT OF TOM BRADY’S 1ST SEASON WITH THE BUCCANEERS..HE PAID ATTENTION, THAT’S A GOOD SIGN…

  19. Dooley Says:

“Dooley, lmaooo the same ones who for threw nothing but hate for years and years at JW3 on here are now triggered because I comment on how meaningless this article is.”

Not triggered or hypocrite, just pointing out the hate in your rhetoric in an article about a guy from the team we apparently both like, doing things to get better with his teammates. Don’t mind me, keep grinding that axe

  20. Tbbucs3 Says:

When did this supposedly become an emotional support site for insecure gator fans?

  21. Dooley Says:

    ^^^
LOL I played at and graduated from UConn

You gonna hate on that too?😂🤣😅

  22. Wild Bill Says:

Gotta say I paid zero attention to Trask his first 2 years. But now I find myself cheering for the young man as the underdog. As far as I know he has kept his mouth shut, never bitched or complained and deserves a fair shot if he earns it. I hope they alternate both qbs with the first stringers in the preseason and let the best man start when the season begins. One plus for both qbs is they are far more mobile than Brady. Moving the pocket should help the blockers. Opposing defenses always knew where Brady was going to be. The new guys being mobile will make the pass rushers job a little harder than Brady who basically was almost always in the same spot.

  23. Duane Says:

Regardless of who appears to have the edge, it’s just great that we have two by players capable of competing for the starters job. We haven’t had that situation since before Jason Licht came to the Bucs more than a decade ago – as remarked by Licht himself yesterday.

If you haven’t heard yet , Joe Burrow got carted off the field today with a leg injury. If he missed any games or is less effective, his team is in big trouble. The 49ers ended up on their 3rd string quarterback in the playoffs, and even he couldn’t finish their last playoff game due to injury.

The old BA remark that a team that has two starting quarterbacks has none is simply not true. Lots of backups have come off the bench to get their team into the playoffs in recent years. Every QB is exactly one play away from a killer injury, even in underwear football in the preseason.

  24. Buccos Says:

    Go Gators! Attaboy

  25. Craig Says:

Love that he is not self promoting himself.

If Baker had he is arrogant enough that the world would know.

  26. TampabayDJ Says:

I’m going out on a limb here , but I think Trask wins the job. Yes Baker has the experience, but his experience has been very poor the past 3 years. Trask was a sponge on Brady’s yacht and in the film room. He also knows Evans and Godwin far better than Baker. I don’t care either way honestly , just want the best QB on the field.

  27. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Can’t we be a little positive about it

  28. David Says:

It seems as both qb’s have had good training camp so far. Kyle will win with a fair chance.

  29. garro Says:

    Good news Joe.

This may not make a big difference in the QB competition but sure as hell won’t hurt. Particularly with a new offense. Add to this that as word of this gets around to his team mates he is sure to gain a bit more in the way of leadership and respect.

    Go Bucs!

  30. Jorgito Brito Says:

Kyle is big boy and educated. Translation Big Ben stuff. Hang in there and trust your group. No pre Madonna stuff and we will shock the Saints and Vegas! Florida is becoming a winner.Got Detroit rooting for the lightning and the Ray’s have captured Yankee fans. Bucs 2 times to the dance and won both. Just gotta get there and we learned how! Watch out from the tower. The Bucs will be great! Jason Licht is the best!!!! Not at kickers though…lol!
