Tristan Wirfs Predicts 12-5 Season, Says Baker Mayfield And Dave Canales Are An Energy Match

June 28th, 2023

Tristan Wirfs

There was no “one-game-at-a-time” coachspeak coming from All-Pro right (left) tackle Tristan Wirfs this week.

Wirfs was a guest on a Minnesota Vikings podcast, Vikes Verified, and point blank was asked to predict the Bucs’ record this season. Wirfs paused and dropped “12-5.” Joe gave Wirfs a standing ovation.

Hey, why not the Bucs? Well, there are many reasons 12 wins could be out of reach, but Wirfs knows how hard it is to win 13 games in a regular season. He and the Bucs did that twice, so Joe’s rolling with 12-5 on this fine Wednesday.

For those wondering, Wirfs did not reveal much about the Buccaneers’ quarterback battle between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask. He did note how they’ve been splitting reps and that it’s been “nice to get that and get a little bit comfortable with them.”

Wirfs did, however, agree with the podcast co-host’s assertion that “super-high-energy” Dave Canales matches Mayfield’s energy. “Absolutely,” Wirfs said.

    Here it comes…Super Bowl Run!!!

  2. Rosadog Says:

I hope Canales is the real deal! Love his energy, love communication.

Hope he can get the best of the Offense.

  3. FortMyersDave Says:

I love the enthusiasm but with Bowels calling the shots it seems extremely unlikely. The win o/u of 6.5 is there for 2 primary reasons: the national perception that the Bucs will lose at least 3 more games with Mayfield then Brady (though no one mentions the OL and how ineffective it was last season or the fact that Leftwich was way over his head) and secondly, Coach Bowles: the national sentiment is that he will find ways to lose not win on most Sundays. Personally I will say over but 7 or 8 wins is a more realistic prediction. Then again Wirfs knows the mind state of his teammates better than any armchair Buc fan like myself or the knuckleheads in the national media who have the Bucs 5 and 12 with a top 5 draft pick in 2024 with a new head coach in all probability.

Some people have a lot of energy while not doing a whole lot.

Other people conserver energy to do great things.

  5. DoooshLaRue Says:

I like hearing that from a player I totally respect.

    LFG!

“Tristan Wirfs … Says Baker Mayfield And Dave Canales Are An Energy Match”

Tristan Wirfs did not say that. The podcast host said that and Tristan said “absolutely”. What was he supposed to say? “No”? LMAO.
Well, he could have said nobody matches Canales’ energy. He could have said Mayfield has been pretty lowkey but it’s obvious he’s going to ramp it up for training camp. He could have said a lot of things. And Joe didn’t quote the whole exchange. -Joe

  8. Larrd Says:

Wirfs is stepping up as a team leader, it seems. It should be Devin White on the other side, but he has decided on another direction. Too bad. Teams with dominant defenses win, usually.

  9. Oviedo Jim Says:

    Cut the bullsh…t.

  10. Dooley Says:

12-5 sounds like a “howdy howdy” type of season to me. I’d also imagine some JBFers would be pissed because it would mean Todd Bowles keeps his job as Bucs HC. Idk why you’d root against a winning season(or for a losing season), or some semblance of carrying the same program over into a new league year, but hey I guess it’d be a new twist in the “ It’s a Bucs life”. Pessimism is a helluva drug or whatever it was Rick James said

  11. SOEbuc Says:

Can we finally make it clear Trask is second string practice squad.

  12. R0n@Tampa Says:

What have I been telling everyone? This is a superbowl champion. I am glad that more people are buying in. I would say 13-4 but I will take a 12-5. either way this team has the talent. I can’t wait until we pummel the Chiefs again in this years superbowl.

  13. JD Still Says:

I was wondering when the next Baker Mayfield propaganda kiss up would hit , just to be clear , it wasn’t Wirfs that said Mayfield and Canales energy matches, that was the Vikings announcer, all Wirfs did say was how well both QB’s were doing and making everybody feel comfortable with them both.

  14. Stanglassman Says:

Misrepresenting what Joe wrote with something worse doesn’t make your point.

  15. Big Jim Again Says:

I already predicted that 5 weeks ago, a 12-5 season with gunslinger mayfield, sport writers are always the last to become aware, anyone can get a website and blab whatever, 99% of the time its incorrect

  16. PNW Buc Says:

Bucs go 17-0. Baker is come back player of the year. Pulls a hammy while filming a commercial on the pirate ship prior to the super bowl. Trask wins super bowl MVP.
    I love July 🙂

  17. PNW Buc Says:

    Or June 🕵️‍♂️🙈🤷🏽‍♂️

  18. westernbuc Says:

The NFL is won today with QBs who can extend plays and a quality defense to support the offense. We have both.

  19. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I AGREE WITH TRISTEN WIRFS 12-5 PREDICTION ! ( EVEN THOUGH IT COULD CONCEIVABLY BE BETTER THAN THAT , “IF EVERYONE STAYS HEALTHY ” THROUGHOUT THE LONG SEASON..THIS TEAM HAS ACCUMULATED ALOT OF TALENT & SPEED, WHILE MANAGING TO KEEP THE YOUNGEST MOST IMPORTANT VETERANS..THIS TEAM IS GOING TO GEL & BE AWESOME THIS SEASON ! THANKS IN NO SMALL PART TO DAVE CANALES SYSTEM & ATTITUDE ALONG WITH A DEFENSE THAT’S GOING TO HAVE AN AGGRESSIVE ATTITUDE OF IT’S OWN !

  20. Mike S Says:

PNW Buc July is awesome isn’t it?

If you’re going to shoot for the moon you might as well shoot for the sun and the stars.

There’s a lot of player turnover and its a cap reset year. I’ll be happy with us taking our lumps while the young players develop – especially our young QB.

  21. BillyBucco Says:

All I can say is that we need to thrash the Saints twice.
I really hope they have problems with our offense.
We played right into their hands most seasons with our No Risk it offense.
They wanted us to throw the ball down field.
We got better with Brady by throwing less picks.
NO would beat is and then lose to the Cardinals or Lions.
I hope Jordan has 0 sacks against us.

  22. DantheMan Says:

Wirfs knows what he’s talking about. This is another Super Bowl year! Oh Yeah!

  23. garro Says:

Thats confidence….Yeah! As the great Macho Man Randy Savage would say!

    Go Bucs

  24. Fishhawkbuc Says:

Quite possibly that his dyslexia kicked in. 😕

  25. Rayjay1122 Says:

12-5 is possible for sure. Dallas was not awesome last season and they managed 12 wins, so it can be done in the NFC South for sure.

  26. Bobby M. Says:

Stated this several times…..nobody is raving about Trask in the locker room….game recognizes game. We’ve heard more positive quotes from players on Mayfield in 30 days than we’ve heard on Trask in 2 yrs. I really feel Arians/Leftwich did a p!ss poor job of developing him. By year two Trask should be the back up to Brady. Unfortunately he’s got to learn a whole new system which frankly is what bad organizations do with young QBs. Constantly changing systems on a young QB is exceptionally difficult to overcome. He’ll have to be undeniably better than Mayfield which I just don’t see happening. He couldn’t beat out Gabbert who I’m certain Mayfield would….it wouldn’t even be a competition.

  27. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Lot of fans smoking hand made cigs today. 12-5, 13-4, 17-0 are nice fantasies here in June. Have they even put on the pads yet? Some have predicted that Bowles, Traskfield, D. White, and the missing twins MTS and Logan Hall (is that his name?) will lead to the first pick.

Hope I’m wrong but I think the latter scenario is more probable. But I’ll hang in this year like I have since I moved to Dunedin in 1978

  28. Mike Johnson Says:

12-5 aye Tristan? I’ll have a double of whatever you had.

  29. unbelievable Says:

LOVE THE CONFIDENCE FROM THE BIG MAN!

  30. ScottyMack Says:

The way I see it, there are only three games the Bucs have no chance of winning (unless they are FAR better than anyone thinks they will be) – Eagles, 49ers and Bills. Some may count the Vikings in that “no chance” mix, but their record last season was far better than the team they were and they are missing a lot of major pieces this year from last year’s team. (What did they win … 13 one score games?)

The rest are toss-ups if the Bucs are a shade better than the prognosticators predict.

12-5? Not likely. I’ll take the over on 6.5 wins, though, and think they’ll win 8 or 9 games. Their schedule is extremely weak!

  31. ScottyMack Says:

I should also add that the Bucs only have 5 games all season against teams who have defenses projected to be in the top 50% of the league. Of the 12 other games, 7 are projected to be against the worst 9 defenses in the league. Mayfield/Trask won’t ever have a better opportunity to show they are capable QBs than this season.
