Lots Of Jobs, Lots Of Improvement

June 15th, 2023

No. 1 Buccaneers tight end Cade Otton.

Tampa Bay’s top-dog tight end job firmly belongs to Cade Otton, the second-year player picked in Round 4 of last year’s draft.

Otton needs to improve and he is clear on where.

The 24-year-old tight end was a SiriusXM NFL Radio guest this week and he talked about blocking NFL defensive ends first when asked what he’s trying to upgrade in his game after studying all his 2022 game film.

Otton said he’s dialed in on being more technique-sound and fudamentally sound with his hands in the running game.

And then he went to separation in his routes, particularly when he feels he’s in a coverage mismatch. More separation means bigger plays, Otton noted, and he wants more big ones down the field.

Joe thought Otton might have mentioned hitting a rookie wall last season and desiring more stamina, but he didn’t go there.

Interstingly, Otton talked about having about nine places to line up within the offense, which certainly illustrates how crazy challenging the tight end position is for a rookie.

Otton also played a lot of special teams last season. Joe suspects Otton may not play there at all in 2023, especially if he’s getting the separation he’s working on in the passing game. No need to have your No. 1 tight end out there on kickoffs.

He’s had an entire off season to also improve physically and perhaps add some more strength to help with those mismatches against DE’s.

They usually do bulk up a little after their first year. He was listed at 247 last year

Now that the off-season training schedule has wrapped what will Joe talk about for the next two months?

I’m sure the sloppy wet kiss Baker Mayfield articles are going to be riveting, I probably won’t even vomit on my shoes!

By TE standards, Otton had a nice rookie year, showed plenty, and has the makings of being a decent-to-good starting TE. Will be interesting to see how he improves.
