Practice Notes From Minicamp Day 3

June 15th, 2023

Bucs warm up for final 2023 minicamp practice.

So minicamp 2023 wrapped up this morning with a shortened practice. It began (Joe believes) with a prank from Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Bowles is a big music guy and actually a singer. His vibe is smooth jazz. So naturally warmups began with rap. Then after a minute or two it stopped, which got a rise out of many Bucs players.

After a brief moment of silence, music returned, only it was smooth jazz, something you might hear in a fancy piano bar near closing. Joe firmly believes Bowles was behind this.

Good thing Donovan Smith wasn’t here. Smith was a guy who had to have music playing (loudly) 24/7. If he didn’t have tunes, he was surly. If he was here today upon hearing jazz, he may have held Bowles.

Anyway, off to a few notes about the abbreviated practice:

* Baker Mayfield pumps right and throws over the middle to Taye Barber.

* Mayfield launches a ball downfield and Deven Thompkins makes an insane catch in tight double-coverage. Joe wrote about the play here.

* People have the hops today. Mayfield fires down the right sideline and Rakim Jarrett rises for a catch.

* Kyle Trask connects with Barber who ran a slant route from the left.

* Trask pumps right and overthrows Jarrett over the middle. Wait a minute! Bucs offensive players hollered that Christian Izien (Rutgers) held Jarrett coming out of his break.

* Trask pumps right and throws to Patrick Laird over the middle.

* Trask finds Chris Godwin on a crossing pattern from the right.

* Rachaad White runs up the middle. He seems a bit more rocked up than last year.

* Blocked! Mayfield had a pass rejected at the line by Logan Hall.

* Trask way overthrows David Moore in the left corner of the end zone but it appears a lot of offensive players gave up on the play thinking it was illegal procedure. So Moore may not have completed his route which of course would make a quarterback appear to overthrow a pass.

* Ronnie Brown runs right and is met by a wall of humanity.

* Laird runs right and gets four or five yards.

* Spread-option look. Trask puts the ball in the gut of Brown for a second, pulls the ball back out and connects with Thompkins down the left side.

    What does “rocked up” mean?

    Been hitting the weights. Chiseled.

  7. Marine Buc Says:

Hey Joe has Ryan Jenson been participating in the practices at all?

I am very curious about his status…

  13. kyle Says:

thanks joes for the camp updates as always!

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

Sean Tucker hasn’t been cleared to play yet. I don’t think Jenson or Shaq Barrett played at all, but worked with trainers.
Joe said Hall batted down a pass. He is 6’6″. Baker is 6’1″.
Glad to hear Devin Tompkins name.

  15. All_da_way Says:

Sounds good to me and no injuries.

So that is a wrap until training camp.

  16. Fred McNeil Says:

Yup. I guess this is listless,,, I mean list season

  17. SOEbuc Says:

Loong excuse for Trask way overthrowing Moore in the end zone Joe. Let me know how his other garbage is not his fault.

  18. Craig Says:

    Thanks Joes.

Looks like Trask has a better grasp of the early concepts of the new offense, maybe from staying away from photo ops at Rays games.

Mayfly just can’t seem to stop those happy feet, they are what get him into trouble.

SOEbuc Says: “Long excuse for Trask way overthrowing Moore in the end zone Joe.”

You weren’t there so you have zero knowledge. Butt hurt much?

  20. DJB Says:

Not feeling good about Jensen’s status. At least the Bucs will have time to address Plan B going into training camp.

“If he was here today upon hearing jazz, he may have held Bowles.”
    HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Thanks, Joe I was going to say something similar.

Hall was the only DL called out by name in today’s notes. I don’t recall another DL being referenced in any of the game notes. It’s underwear football so DL/OL aren’t aloud to do much. The fact he did something is a good sign!

I wasn’t? Were you? And I don’t think analysts get perfect picture either in mini camp. Pick 6 first throw first day. Pick day two. Don’t try to tell me third times a charm or not his fault day 3.
