Baker Mayfield: Bucs “Built To Have Quick Success”

June 15th, 2023

Expections are high at One Buc Palace, even if Todd Bowles said this week that losing Tom Brady is a problem.

Baker Mayfield has big dreams as the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback. That’s what he told CBS Sports in an exclusive chat at mandatory minicamp, which concluded today.

Mayfield, 27, reiterated that in free agency he only was interested in stable and those that presented him an opportunity to be a long-term fit after a strong 2023 season.

“I knew it was going to be a one-year, kind of prove-it deal,” he added.

The Bucs “are built to have quick success here in the next couple of years,” Mayfield continued.

As Joe was first to report back in March, Mayfield had an opportunity to sign with Baltimore, and Joe was told the Rams would have been happy to have him back. That said a lot considering the elite head coaches in place at those teams.

But Mayfield is in Tampa where his personal opportunity is best, and perhaps the team opportunity. No, Joe isn’t saying the Bucs are better than the Ravens. But if Joe were a quarterback, Joe sure would rather be competing in the weaker NFC with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Mayfield referenced weapons and the hiring of playcaller Dave Canales as part of his “easy decision” to sign in Tampa.

4th team in 7 years is the charm?

Even backup quarterbacks didn't;t want to play for Leftwich.

  4. bd Says:

also, other teams had starters ,so he would be on the bench here.competition with Trask might be a little bit better option?

  5. Hodad Says:

I’m pulling for Trask, but I’m also certainly not rooting for Mayfield to fail. I’d be happy for him, and us if he succeeds. Looking forward to seeing it play out.

  6. Pewter Power Says:

It would be really hard to be worse than last year’s offense I mean really hard. Forget the name Tom Brady, the offense was horrible and I can’t imagine a new offense being worse than that trash

  7. Sly Pirate Says:

    Trask Fans

We get it. You don’t have to say it every article about Baker.

  8. BillyBucco Says:

All you guys saying 4 teams need to stop.
He was on 2 of them last year and didn’t spend an offseason with either.
    Give these guys a chance.
Nobody thought Jalen Hurts was special.
Nobody thought Brock Purdy was special.
How many people like Fitzpatrick and how many teams did he play for?
Hell, even Desean Jackson knew he was better than Winston.

  9. DBS Says:

It’s his Son. He can’t help it. Joe named him perfectly a long time ago

  10. BuckeyeBuck Says:

BillyBucco is correct. Plus, there’s every chance both QB’s can shine in the type of QB friendly offense Canales wants to run. CLE and NYJ have an open competition in ruining young QN’s. But sometimes a guy like Geno Smith escapes NY and gets a chance to shine elsewhere

  11. Voice of Truth Says:

Ok Baker, Lamar and Matt had nothing to do with it…

The only reason this guy starts is Todd is scared for his job

We should be rolling with Kyle from day 1 and seeing what we have – everyone knows what Baker is…

This “we can win” BS is nauseating and is harming the future of the franchise

  12. westernbuc Says:

Harbaugh played against him twice a year and wanted him. Should be noteworthy

You need to YouTube the video of Herm Edwards, because ‘YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME”.

    Joe in Michigan

Look at Baker’s W-L record last year.

Even with McVey – not good

  15. stpetebucfan Says:

If people INSIST on picking out ONE season for Mayfield why do they rarely go to the good stuff? Oh I get it…they wish to pimp for their boy Trask.

So Mayfield certainly presents a mixed record. He’s played for ONE decent franchise the Rams…The Browns suck even worse than the horrid old Bucs and Carolina was a disaster at the start of last year and didn’t figure it out until late.

So…let’s stipulate…Mayfield sucked along with the rest of the Panthers to start last year…he played at least OK with the Rams despite Kupps injury.

So enough with opinion I’ll add just a few FACTS!!!

Mayfield played in his first NFL game in Week 3 against the New York Jets, replacing an injured Tyrod Taylor with the Browns down 14–0. Mayfield went 17 of 23, passing for 201 yards as the Browns came back and prevailed 21–17, ENDING THEIR WINLESS STREAK AT 19 GAMES!!! Mayfield became the first player since Fran Tarkenton in 1961 to come off the bench in his debut, throw for more than 200 yards, and lead his team to its first win of the season.

In Week 16, Mayfield completed 27 of 37 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in a 26–18 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, earning him AFC Offensive Player of the Week. He also won the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week fan vote for the sixth time.

While Mayfield was considered by many to be the favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year for 2018, the award was given to Giants running back Saquon Barkley. On the annual Top 100 Players list for 2019, Mayfield’s peers named him the 50th best player in the league, one spot behind teammate Myles Garrett.

But it was Mayfield’s 3rd season where he LITERALLY made some Browns history. In Week 17, Mayfield and the Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 24–22 and earned their first post season playoff berth since 2002.(Can you say first playoffs in TWENTY YEARS!) The Browns finished the regular season 11–5.

In the Wild Card Round against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mayfield went 21 of 34 for 263 yards and 3 touchdowns during the 48–37 win, leading the Browns to their FIRST playoff victory since the 1994 season(A 25 year drought!), and the Browns’ first playoff road victory since the 1969 season.( That a freaking 50 year mark) In the Divisional Round of the playoffs against the Kansas City Chiefs, Mayfield threw for 204 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception during the 22–17 loss. Respectable on the road against Mahomes.

And so we can all have opinions. They are just that OPINIONS. Some mightily influenced by Trask prejudice. We could perhaps debate what he CAN do..but there is no debate at what he HAS done for one of the worst NFL franchise in existence breaking 25 and 50 year post season droughts.

IMHO at 27 if he’s healthy the ONLY reason Mayfield would have difficulty succeeding is if the Bucs are not very good as a team. He doesn’t need to carry them just move them and score the Offense’s share of the points and let the D clean up.

If Trask beats out Mayfield in an HONEST preseason competition…great..means the Bucs have TWO QB’s who can get er done!

  16. TBChucky Says:

I’m PATIENTLY awaiting to see how this QB competition plays out. I don’t have a choice. I don’t already know that one or both our QBs suck like half these posters do.. 🙄

  17. Judith Allen Says:

    THANK YOU!
It’s nice to have a knowledgeable fan say something positive about Baker Mayfield. I do not understand why anyone would condemn him without even seeing him play football. Have they even noticed that everyone he plays with (n 99.9% “for”) him thinks he’s great? They need to “get a life”.

  18. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    Who’s reading that book

  19. garro Says:

The Rams and Ravens wanted Maybefield as a Backup. Not a starter.
    Go Bucs

  20. Oneilbuc Says:

Garro. Baker Mayfield was not snig to the Panthers to be a backup he lost his job because he sucked. Stop with the excuses for Baker Mayfield you wouldn’t say the same thing about Jamies. Baker Mayfield has been gifted the starting job the day they snig him and everyone knows it !! This whole quarterback competition they are lieing about is to convince you guys Baker Mayfield is a good quarterback just to sale tickets.

  21. RustyRhinos Says:

Nothing like “reading” to expand your knowledge right Jeff’s grandpa?

  22. Chris Says:

    BAKERNEER!!!!

  23. Danny Husak Says:

Great to know the GOOD Buc fans. Stpetebucfan. Judith Allen & Chris. We will, all 4 of us, relish in the ” I’m so sorry that the Bucs are 8-2 going into week 11.” But then if you don’t do your homework…………..
