Todd Bowles: Too Early For QBs To Lead

May 23rd, 2023

Baker Mayfield

While Todd Bowles calls Baker Mayfield “a natural born leader,” the coach recognizes that’s too soon for the full Baker Mayfield Effect, so Bowles explained today after practice.

Sure, players can show leadership, but Bowles said it’s way to early for the kind top-dog stuff that’s most meaningful.

“We’ve just been meeting. So everybody’s been learning. There’s nobody over there that can tell anybody what to do — because they’re all learning at the same time,” Bowles said. “As the weeks go on and we grasp everything, you’ll start to see leadership qualities come out of [Mayfield] that I know he has, that I know Kyle [Trask] has, as well. So when that starts to happen, then you start making a determination of where we want to go.”

Bowles already is on record saying leadership will be a component to deciding who wins the allegedly wide open quarterback competition.

Pulling for Trask! Mayfield has already shown what he’s got.

  2. Dooley Says:

Baker said “It’s May” in response to us being ranked 30th in the too early to matter power rankings lol

  3. CrackWise Says:

Joe, when are you gonna do your annual, “Joe puts no weight on Captain”. Of course, after they are named. Just find it funny how Leadership and Captains go hand in hand yet one means nothing and the other means everything.

I realize you are just reporting what the coach is saying but why pretend like it means anything when you put no weight on it or do you?

Leadership vs Captain which is greater and why? Does it even matter? Is this not the role’s of the coach?

I want to see if Bowles interacts with his QBs during the game. I never saw him interact with Brady so I wonder if it’s his typical coaching style or something else? I guess I’ll find out in 110 days.

I can’t envision a scenario (outside of injury) that ends with Trask as QB1 coming out of camp…This is Baker’s job to lose, more so than Trask’s job to win. (IMO)

Yes, both Baker & Kyle are learning the new Canales “Shanahan” concepts OFF system at the same time as everyone else…But if the rumors of slow learning are true…No way Traskcan is the guy week 1, when he couldn’t master Lefty’s O fast enough in 2yrs to keep Gabbert from holding clipboards on gamedays in 2022.

  6. Craig Says:

Gotta get the new offense to lay down flat, then maybe we can learn to have some faith.

  7. Brandon Jeff Says:

BBQBUC, are you suggesting that these FSU Fanbois are slow…I mean
    Deliberate learners?

  8. kaimaru69 Says:

    BBQBUC Says:

You do know “deliberate” is also code for SLOW

  9. Duane Says:

Making up crap and calling it “code for _____” is code for stupid.

  10. Guzzie55 Says:

I recall a certain 3rd round QB (Russ Wilson) beating out a veteran FA brought in expected to a start (Matt Flynn) our best case scenario is Trask showing he wasn’t a typical Florida QB and we have our QB for the foreseeable future

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

“Deliberate learner” doesn’t mean anything at all in practice. Accidental learner means a little something, but deliberate learner??? That just means he didn’t learn it by accident. The connotation is that he’s a little slow, but they probably didn’t actually mean it that way. Sometimes they are literally trying to wordily say nothing at all. They should hire Kamala “Heels Up” Harris as a spokesperson.
