Todd Bowles Highlights 7 Keys To Tampa Bay QB Competition

May 30th, 2023

Competing QB Kyle Trask.

The inevitable questions were directed at Todd Bowles today about the Buccaneers’ quarterback competition between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask.

Bowles, of course, likes the work he’s seeing from his QBs but acknowledges importance stuff can’t be gauged because the Bucs are in underwear football season, when players can’t hit, block or shove each other.

“You really don’t know who’s what under pressure,” Bowles said of his competing QBs.

Bowles, however, did drop a mix of clichés and somewhat insightful takes on how he’ll gauge the QB battle.

“It comes down to making plays at the end and who has a better command of the offense.”

“It’s not necessarily making the big play but the right play.”

“Moxie” is a factor along with displaying “in-game intelligence.”

“Who the team galvanizes around.”

“Who’s ready to play the first game.” (Joe likes that one, perhaps the most basic but overlooked reality.)

Bowles added that the Mayfield-Trask evaluation will be “constant analysis from now until we name a starter.”

Everything he said points to Trask

  2. Duane Says:

It should not be surprising if the competition isn’t declared over until after the last pre-season game is played. It’s possible one candidate may completely blow out the other to where it’s no contest, or god forbid one of them gets hurt in pre-season. But this competition could be very entertaining and lead to vast amounts of argumentation amongst Bucs fans and media types (which the latter love cause it generates mouse clicks and ratings points).

  3. popeye Says:

He mentioned “moxie” to make it look like Minifield is in the running and sell tickets to the FSU fans. Remember, the Bucs passed on both Will Levis and Hendon Hooker in the draft because they know what they have in Trask.

  4. AtlBuc Says:

Most ppl know who will start. The rest will know as soon as we see them both in action.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

AtlBuc … ‘Everything he said points to Trask’.

    Really?

Bowles … ‘The Mayfield-Trask evaluation will be “constant analysis from now until we name a starter.”

  6. Buc4evr Says:

    Underwhelmed as usual.

  7. popeye Says:

    Where is my post?

  8. Beej Says:

Two different teams after the Broncos concluded very quickly Tim Tebow couldn’t play QB in the NFL, and they didn’t have to start him to glean that

  9. robert Says:

they will gift it to BM.

not because he is better or earned it, but because he has starting experience and they have zero clue on evaluating talent at the qb position.

  10. AtlBuc Says:

It’s not really a competition. Trask will be the starter. Mayfield was brought in because he’s a media magnet and will take a lot of the off-season attention away from Trask. He will also be a good veteran backup to Trask.

  11. 1#bucsfan Says:

I hope you’re right ATLBuc. Personally I still don’t think this is a competition. Bowels needs wins and he doesn’t think it’s possible with a QB who has yet to make a start with the 1st team in a NFL game where baker has plenty of experience. I want trask as the starter but we always don’t get what we want. I saw what trask did at FL his last season with pitts n toney. I believe CG14 n ME13 are light years better and trask would do better than good. Trask is better than Winston and look what Winston was able to do with our weapons

  12. AtlBuc Says:

    #1
Do you think the answer is the QB who is responsible for helping deliver a number one pick to a division opponent?

  13. Dooley Says:

Bowles also spoke on Trasks’ confidence relative to the fact this is his first offseason getting a lionshare of the snaps compared to the last 2 years sitting behind Tom & Blaine, and apparently KT2 is looking more confident with an increased workload.

  14. Dew Says:

I give credit to Bowles for taking lots of questions. And Trask sounds ready for challenge. Fact is spending some time as the #2 QB will help his developement.

  15. AtlBuc Says:

The only thing Trask can learn playing behind Mayfield is how to get your team the number one overall draft pick.

  16. Hodad Says:

Wink, wink, right Joe? Everyone knows there’s no competition. Baker was the starter the moment he was signed.

  17. Bee Says:

I swear, it’s like whenever this site mentions Baker it’s like Skip Bayless is ghostwriting for the Joes. Baker sucks. The best thing he could do is get this team a high draft pick so he can get replaced with a rook QB.

  18. Lovelorn For Brady Says:

If Brady isn’t here then I think I’d rather have Trask.
Just because he’s taller and bigger and doesn’t have the
    lame track record of BM.
Just because Trask hasn’t started and they brought in BM
doesn’t mean (as some commentors have insinuated) that
Bucs brass isn’t impressed w Trask.

Also, Brady will start in Las Vegas and win SB #8 because Brady
laughs at father time. Mark it down beyotches!

  19. AtlBuc Says:

Can a player own a team and play for it at the same time.

  20. Dooley Says:

    @ATLBuc

    Absolutely not

  21. Lakeland Steve Says:

Some of you guys astound me. It would be a great story if Trask got the nod, but it’s wishful thinking based on what? Oh he was a good college QB for a year. All of you Traskettes, put your actual Brain in gear and use some of the grey matter to actually think for a second. If you do that then you would come to the obvious conclusion that Mayfield will start.

  22. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Lakeland, no use in talking sense to the Florida homers.

If I were the Glaziers I would hang a sign in the draft room that says “DO NOT DRAFT IN FIRST ROUND ANYBODY FROM FSU OR FU.”

Otherwise the homers will try to push their guy and we wind up with Jameis or some other guy drafted before they should.

  23. AtlBuc Says:

You can tell when a Florida State fan is writing. They are used to playing with garbage quarterbacks. They lose all sense of what a real qb should look like. They are used to hoping the qb does well with all evidence and history showing that he’s hot garbage.

Mayfield’s play helped a team get the number one draft pick. And they think this is the answer to our QB problems. I’ve seen Trask play and I have seen Mayfield play. Trask is head and shoulders better than Mayfield. Anddddd, according to coaches and players, he has gotten better.

Have you heard anyone say that about Mayfield?

  24. Lovelorn For Brady Says:

Not a UF homer or an FSU h8ter, just feel that Trask is by far the more prototypical NFL QB…AND…he hada few years in the same locker room rubbing shoulders w/ the almighty GOAT

  25. Bee Says:

    Trask will win!

  26. Lovelorn For Brady Says:

Some guys really mature mentally and fill out physically after college and I think Trask is one of those guys

(I did LOL @ “Traskettes” though)

  27. Fred McNeil Says:

It would be cool to see Trask win the job, but I think Baker has a leg up with the regime.

  28. Mark Says:

I here the BUCS are having a couple of throwback games with the creamsicle uniforms, if Baker Mayfield is going to be our starter get some creamsicle jerseys and stock up on paper bags

  29. Wild Bill Says:

What we know about Baker is he has failed already with another team, and is somewhat undersized. What we know about Trask is he his relatively bigger, younger, and stronger but has no game time experience. I think it would be a mistake not to give Trask the starting job in preseason and play him enough to see what he’s got. We already know what Baker offers and it is not super star status. Baker’s only edge is game time experience, but limited success.. So let’s see what Trask can do. The Bucs are not loaded with super bowl talent likely will not be a contender. Play the bigger, stronger, younger guy dammit! Play the reject if the kid bombs.

  30. Hammerhead Says:

Coming down to injuries amongst our rivals too.

  31. garro Says:

The secret code of the coach speak actually says when decoded via my Top Secret exclusive Official NFL decoder ring says… He has contacted Brady and will announce him as the starter just prior to kickoff of the Viking s game.

By all means let the pointless …What he really meant was …conjecture continue!

    Go Bucs!

  32. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Yeah cuz trask no known for his moxie

  33. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker Mayfield will be the starter this ain’t no quarterback competition Bowles say the same thing about Baker Mayfield and what it takes to win the job. The only thing the bucs are good at is destroying every quarterback they draft . They have destroyed Trask just like they have done every quarterback they ever drafted and they will destroy the next quarterback they draft next year. I have no faith in the bucs developing a quarterback. So they need to just focus on building a great defense so they can just plug in a guy at quarterback just not no old guy next time and try to have a good running game and then I believe we can win another Superbowl !!!
