No Phony Film On Jose Ramirez

May 5th, 2023

Rookie Bucs edger rusher Jose Ramirez.

Joe has never heard Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht so jacked up about a late sixth-round draft pick.

Sure, Licht liked Ko Kieft (2022) and Kaelin Clay (2015), but Joe can’t recall Licht getting into college film talk about those guys.

He did just that on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week about Eastern Michigan University defensive lineman Jose Ramirez, selected by Tampa Bay in the sixth round on Saturday.

“Jose, just a really productive guy and sometimes you throw on the tape after you see a guy that got 12 or 13 sacks, and you watch the tape and it kind of puts you to sleep,” Licht began. “The production may come where he kind of falls into the quarterback or, you know, the quarterback falls down and [the rusher] puts his hands on him and he gets a sack. But that’s not the case with Jose.

“He’s a real natural rusher. Knows how to use his hands. He’s got an incredible first-step quickness.”

Licht called the Ramirez quickness numbers at the NFL Scouting Combine “very elite” and “borderline Dwight Freeneyish.”

“So we just felt like he had a lot of tools,” Licht continued, “and I’m very, very excited about that pick, as I am with all of them. But [Ramirez] in particular, I’m excited to see how this one goes.”

Joe already wrote about the hype surrounding Ramirez’s stunning short-space quickness.

It’s hard to believe Ramirez lasted so long in the draft, especially considering every team wants more pass rushers.

Regardless, Joe isn’t overhyping Ramirez. He’ll need time to adjust and hopefully he can be at least a special teams beast out of the gate.

Yes, there have been sixth-round pass rushers who have shined in the league, like Panthers beast Greg Hardy did before he lost his mind. Todd Bowles hasn’t developed one in his career, though.

Most of GM are jacked up after draft. He was also jacked up with Caleb Benenoch, as far as I can remember. Maybe Ramirez is a super star tomorrow, I hope so, but every single manager comes with this mantra things that repeat and repeat till the season starts, about how excited they are….

Cool.I hope he’s right. We’ve wasted 3 top picks on DL players. Would love to hit on a late pick. We deserve a break.

That said- Logan Hall beefing up is encouraging. I think Diaby is gonna be special in a year or two.

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo was bummed when Pablo’s Bucs let Nacho go……but Pablo is very excited about Jose Ramirez becoming a great Buc. Go Jose!!!”

  4. Mike Says:

Some boards had him right around the top 100 prospects, so it is pretty surprising to see we landed him in the 6th round. If you can find an elite trait in the 6th round, speed, burst, power, etc. you have to take a shot on it. Licht and the Bucs front office really did a good job top to bottom on this draft, so I think he deserves to be excited about what these guys could possibly do for the Bucs organization.

Rarely does talent escape the notice of the college scouting industry.
Well every now and then the blind squirrel eats…
Typical this time of year priming the fan pump

  6. rrsrq Says:

so we have Dwight Freeny, the next Shaq Barrett and John Randle in this draft

    All lies……nothing but lies

  8. Voice of Truth Says:

Looks like a Shaq clone and YaYa is the new JPP

    Fingers crossed!!

  9. Dooley Says:

Needs some polish techinique wise, but naturally he’s a pretty gifted athlete. Ramirez will get as far as his work ethic paired up with his physical gifts will get him. Considering the overall potential of this draft class, it may be just as good top to bottom as the 2019 draft if not better, can’t be mad if the GM is excited.

    Fingers crossed! Oh that’s cold.

    c’mon … reached mantra stage

“Yes, there have been sixth-round pass rushers who have shined in the league, like Panthers beast Greg Hardy did before he lost his mind. Todd Bowles hasn’t developed one in his career, though.”

… how ‘bot something like … and has seen the errorof his ways and reached out to acquire new edge coach George Edwards … and give edwards some props.

afterall all you can expect is bowles to do is acknowledge and address the problem, which he did. now we’ll see how that works out.

  12. miken Says:

Jason wasn’t even Jason’s 1st choice of the 6th round, he picked two players before him. We will see.

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

Jose is a little smallish and not real fast. That’s why he lasted. Lightning quick and plans well.

  14. CrackWise Says:

Went and checked out his highlight reel cause JL said so. Never seen him before BUT……….. DAMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!

    We certainly “ReLOADED/ReTOOLed” the D Front 7

Rooting for the Polk county boys. Ramirez (Auburndale) and Hayes (Lakeland). Good players come out of here.

  17. Knucknbuc Says:

True the number work and the guy test out. Granted I’m waiting to hear a gm say about one of his draft picks”ehhhh… tbh with you this guy kinda sucks” lol

  18. adam from ny Says:

we def picked a few guys you can really pull for…

whether for big personality, cool name, local boys, etc…

so this aspect of our draft is very very chill…

now if these dudes pan out – then the local fanbase will be amped…

and everyone loves a hometown hero

  19. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Hardy was only a sixth round pick because he was an ass in school. Ramirez simply get slow after 10 yards according to the measurables, but there’s been plenty of late round pass rushers and plenty of workout warrior first round rushing busts.

  20. Goatfarmer Says:

Poor bastage gets the Bowels of Toad as his head coich. He might thrive in ‘25.
