Todd Bowles Is No Fan Of “Arrogant And Pompous” Coaches

April 5th, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Joe gleaned a lot of insight from head coach Todd Bowles last week in Phoenix. Thankfully, Joe has been free to share most of it on these pages.

Among many other questions, Joe asked Bowles what he’s learned about his new offensive coordinator, Dave Canales, after getting to work with him for a month or so.

Bowles said Canales has been authentic to the guy who impressed Bowles during the interview process. The head coach also added that the OC is an impactful salesman, and he believes that will show up in how Canales coaches up assistant coaches and gets player buy-in in a hurry.

“You know, one of the great things about Dave, and most coaches at heart, is that when you don’t know, you say you don’t know,” Bowles said. “You know, some of us are so arrogant and pompous that we have all the answers. Sometimes a smart coach doesn’t have all the answers. He’s got to be smart enough to know that, and Dave is one of those guys. And he’s not afraid to lean on guys to help him when he doesn’t know. I think that’s important and I really like that about him.”

Canales not being “arrogant and pompous” is tied to how both Bowles and general manager Jason Licht believe Canales’ offensive will be unpredictable and constantly evolving, versus a hard-headed coach that would want to stick to a system religiously.

Yet Blows is as arrogant and stubnorn as they get.

  2. Buc4evr Says:

More garbage from the most stubborn and out of touch HC in the NFL.

  3. HC Grover Says:

    Delusional

  5. KC Buc Says:

As he casually cranks out top 10 defenses regularly for us…I mean I for one am grateful for a top 10 defense every year. Sounds like Leftwurst was a real cancer. Shame on Bowles for letting him stick around and shame on him for a handful of questionable game decisions. But like what head coach doesn’t have a handful of those a year? Some people quickly forget how bad Lovie and Schiano were…

I have a hunch this year’s team will be better than last years. Full year to plan with his staff, no more divorced diva QB circus. Give Todd a chance.

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

Joe, it’s cool you got all this juice from the Desert Suare’! Keep it coming. Mucho enjoyment.

  7. sasquatch Says:

Arrogant and pompous was a major swipe at Leftwich, not intentionally, but it definitely fits.

  8. KC Buc Says:

Joe – I wonder if you have more insight as to how close Tom was with the rest of the team. It sure feels like anytime I hear Tom Brady news outside of football, he’s only hanging out with his ex-Patriot buddies. Like never with the true Bucs guys. Makes me think the team chemistry was eroding last year when Tom’s play was dropping off. Reminds me of Gholstons comments

  9. Smashsquatch Says:

The more I hear Bowles and Licht talk about Canales, the more apparent their frustration with Leftwich was boiling. What’s still puzzling is why neither had the balls to let him go mid-season. Did Brady want him to stay?

  10. Winky Says:

When did sports turn into tmz, my feelings are so important, let’s all gossip and ridicule, culture?

This directly to some of the recurring low fruit comments

I’m excited to watch our team, support them.

    Go Bucs!!!

  11. NEfan Says:

KC, I mean Oneilsuckyall. You are delusional to believe the Bucs played like a top 10 D last season. Every team over 500 they avergaed 30 plus points a game, except Dallas and they more than made up for it. They beat crappy teams and lost to less than average QB’s. Not mention over 62 points in their last two PO games. FYI, name one player in Brady’s 23 years that has trashed him and or dissed him for not being the ultimate team player. Psycho AB doesn’t count. Keep reaching HATER!

  12. Dooley Says:

    @Smashquatch

How much would change with a midseason OC firing, knowing that there aren’t NFL level OCs or potential OCs that are walking the streets? Not saying holding onto Leftwich was right or defending him, but you’ve got to have a plan in place when hiring 1 of 3 of the more important coaches on the entire staff. Just one of those things, those of us on the outside of 1Buc wouldn’t know about fully until someone inside the Bucs facilities speaks on it in-depth and publicly.

  13. NEfan Says:

Mid season you will all find out Bowles IS the problem. It is a pipe dream to believe a new OC that has never called a NFL play is the Bucs savior. I beg to avoid a future ulcer don’t get your hopes up, the real disappointment is on its way.

  14. KC Buc Says:

NEFan why are you still around? Shouldn’t you be having heartburn over Mac Jones or something? Perhaps landing a receiver worth something?

No (sane) player is ever going to publicly trash Tom Brady, it’d be career and PR suicide. No other player has the clout to get away with that. Tom’s has been the face of the NFL for 20 years. But some teammates could secretly dislike him, question his all-in commitment, tire of the sideshow drama, etc. We don’t know because no one says anything. But no one is perfect, Giselle kicking him to the curb is proof of that.

Maybe he is the ultimate teammate, maybe he’s not. But don’t you think it’s worth trying to answer the question and maybe find more explanation for the underwhelming 2022 season? Not a hater, greatly appreciate Tom bringing TB back to glory.

  15. Mike C Says:

Smh dang I thought we were done with Patriots fans. Stinkingup this site…… but I guess the arrogant coach headline got them all worked up (hits to close to home).

  17. Goatfarmer Says:

NE — KC Buc is far too coherent to be Qsqueely’all. But I agree with you that an overrated DC who has been overpromoted to HC is the big problem.

  18. D-Rok Says:

Ahhh yes – Mark Twain’s good ole “puttin’ on airs” quote, closely mirrored by the more recent quote from the movie Idiocracy, which begs people to not be all ” f@ggy and pompous, scro.”

  19. 80forBrady Says:

WHen the offense got in trouble last year it would be natural to turn to Bucs ROH SuperBowl ex HC Bruce Arians. I wonder if Arian, the ultmate Leftwich defender, was the one who ran interference preventing Bowles from firing Lefty by assuring everyone that the offense would come around (and actually it did for one game the Mike Evans 3 TD game).

I hope Bowles is able to turn a lot of the day to day defensive responsibilities over to assistants and spend more time doing actual Head Coach tasks. The ship seemed rudderless last year. Also need some of the players to step up and fill the void Brady left in leadership and accountability. Need LaVonte and Davis to be more vocal and Jensen and Evans to dominate the locker room even more. These guys can bereal team leaders and can fill a lot of the Brady void.

  20. Da Bucs Guy Says:

Sounds like shots fired at Bruce Arians. No wonder you won’t see the golf cart at one Bucs anymore.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Byron Leftwich “I don’t be arrogant and pompous, I be conceited and overbearing”

    KC Buc Says
“…don’t you think it’s worth trying to answer the question and maybe find more explanation for the underwhelming 2022 season?”

The answers to that are obvious if viewed without bias.

Team Injuries. Brady was distracted by his personal life (divorce). Todd Bowles. Loss of key players.

It was not any one thing. It was a combination of things.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Da Bucs Guy Says
“Sounds like shots fired at Bruce Arians.”

To be honest, that was the first thing I thought too.

Of course, arrogant coaches tend to get better results…

  24. Duane Says:

Interesting to hear Bowles talk about character flaws. He is going to lose his job based on his. Stubborn, too Arrogant to share insight, has strong opinions but not the balls to act on them. He had all the power, authority, and The Goat last season and this team went out with a whimper. One of our better DCs, but not a leader of men. If he was a leader of men, he would be able to manage himself, or his staff and make personality a non issue.

  25. Buc4evr Says:

I have a sinking feeling that what NEfan says may turn out to be true about Bowles. Brady isn’t here anymore to pull his ass out of the fire and by mid season we will likely be talking about a very high draft pick. Talented team with bad coaching and a subpar QB, what could go wrong…

  26. Redeemer Says:

NE, you are exactly right. This was statistically a top 10 defense, but when they played competent offenses they were exposed. I dont know why it’s so hard for some here to admit facts. As for Bowles, a mans got to know his limitations, as Clint Eastwood said in Magnum Force. He clearly doesn’t know his. I’ll give him this, he knows all the cliches. Problem is, none of them are based in reality. A good coach cant win games, but a bad one can sure lose them. There’s a cliche for ya.

  29. DungyDance Says:

He was obviously talking about Leftwich. His comment was umprompted and too specific to be anything else. Leftwich’s arrogance over the whole season makes it hard to feel bad about how things are turning out for him. Glad Bowles said this our loud. Wish Bowles had the stones to do something about it during the bye week.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

WOW, SHOTS FIRED at that idiot Leftwich, who thought he knew everything and everyone was as stupid as he was. Here’s one example of a transcript involving the two.

Bowles: Hey Leftwich, how about not running up the middle on every 1st down play

Leftwich: WE LEADZ THE LEAGUEZ IN PASSIN, U STOOOPID IDIOT

  31. BuckeyeBuck Says:

Todd is a great DC. HC, not so sure. Can’t judge him off the Jets. they are a crap show. Last year was a dropkick, late hire and a lot of injuries on the O-Line. This year he has “his people” in place, either his vision for the future works or it doesn’t. Results will be evident by midseason

  32. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Bucs added a coach who has playcalling experience.

There could be a little hope yet

  33. NEfan Says:

How can you not judge him from the Jets? He coached 5 seasons. That’s a pretty good sample size. KC, as for my brief return, Joe keeps baiting me with posts like this one. As far as Jones, I wish the Bucs bit in him when Belichick dangled him to them. He’s a spoiled pampered suburbanite crybaby. You can have him, I prefer Zappy.

  34. NEfan Says:

To ALL you Haters, I have one final question for you. Are we really to believe after 22 yrs Brady in a matter of 4 or 5 months went from the obviously MVP choice to a washed up old man in 2022? It makes no sense. His last game in 2021 was an epic comeback. Yes, I am sure the divorce messed him up, look at the weight loss. The 2022 was a total team f-up lead by a HC that lacks the ability to win.

  35. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    Yep still here daily

  36. Beej Says:

So, did the Jets get better after he left?

  37. mark2001 Says:

I honestly don’t care if a coach is arrogant and pompous, or quiet as the proverbial church mouse. As long as they win. What good is a coach that can’t lead a team to victory, or a group of players to success?

  38. NEfan Says:

Beej, the answer is YES, Bowles 2018 season 4-12 in 2019 Adam Case went 7-9. Next question.

  39. ChiBuc Says:

NE, stfu. Nobody cares about your myopic obsession. Move on. It is utterly ridiculous how fixated you are on past glories that you played absolutely no role in achieving. Pathetic.

  40. Goatfarmer Says:

NE makes some excellent points for anyone that is truly objective.

The answer is, some don’t watch the games, only look at sterile numbers on a webpage. Others are married to the obsolete narrative that Bowels is some defensive genius. Others, neither, just are blind. Even put the data in front of them, even some extremely verbose posters who love to copy/paste stats, want to qualify it. FACT — in the 10 losses the Bucs gave up an AVERAGE of 31 ppg which includes 14 to GB, 20 to the Steelers and 21 to the Panthers. None of them had good offenses at all. The others, one could say “decent to good offenses” the average is 33ppg. In other words, they sucked.

“A good coach cant win games, but a bad one can sure lose them.”

HERE YE, HERE YE!!!!!!!!!!! Done. I’m having a drink.

The headline all by itself speaks to the psychopathology and ego of Todd Bowles.

  42. garro Says:

Hmm…Sounds like more of Bowles cover my ass BS.

  43. NEfan Says:

ChiBucs, I understand your woke response because in today’s world mooting those that go against the narrative is commonplace. Unfortunately I still believe in freedom of speech and if you can’t handle the facts then maybe you should STFU!!! FACTS, in six seasons of being a HC, Blows has one 10 win season and a few 4 & 5 win seasons, soon to be another. The man is a loser so get over your man crush.

  44. ChiBuc Says:

In true sleepy fashion, your reply is a nongermane insult and does not address the comment.. not even close. Pay attention and let me spell it out for you. I am not a Bowles fan. I wanted him fired in 2021 often citing how he is a one trick pony, teams are well aware of his def schemes,, and feel his team’s often play to their opponents level and are under prepared. [Side note: screaming for BL’s head since 2019]. Bowles doesn’t seem to get the most from his talent and doesn’t seem capable of managing a game. So YOUR WRONG.

My address is to you constantly evoking Brady’s name like some lil lapdog as if your Fandom longevity gives you credibility. Move on. The party is over…bye, bye with your childish name calling and pathetic grip on the past. Tom Brady did not annoint you super fan. You’re just a wannabe fan with no home team. You’ve been gagging on Brady so long I doubt you’ve watched more than Tommy’s tight pants in any game for the past 20 years. Tommy’s stats are not your armor/accomplishments. Learn some humility you team-less vagabond, and STFU every once in a while.
