So Why Did Rachaad White Change His Number To No. 1?

April 18th, 2023

Single-digit guy.

Bucs fans watching the team try to run the ball last year knew something had to change.

And rookie running back Rachaad White agreed.

Today, White is the Bucs’ No. 1 running back (Joe still believes a new back will be drafted next week). Last year White shared RB1 duties with Playoff Lenny and the Bucs had the worst running attack in the game.

White thinks he may have found the first step to changing his fortune: a new uniform number.

Last year White wore No. 29. Why flip to No. 1? Well, he wanted to wear a single-digit. And he went to Bucs coach Todd Bowles with his request.

White seemed to act as if Bowles did him a favor that ranked right up there with getting drafted by the Bucs.

“I wanted something fresh,” White said. “A new start. New change.”

Well, the Bucs’ running attack sure needed a fresh, new start and a change. It was horrible last year. If it takes White getting a new number to rack up rushing yards, so be it.

He may have jumped the gun. Just a few days after White let it be known on social media he had a new number, the Bucs released Ryan Succop, who wore No. 3. That was White’s number at Arizona State.

Not sure if White realizes it, but the players who have worn No. 1 in Bucs history have been pretty much trash unless you are a closet fan of Donald Igwebuike or Joe Hamilton.

Please tell me they don’t put number change language in rookie contracts….

  2. garro Says:

And please tell me he’s not turning into another D White!

Wirfs please tell him this is a very bad look right now.

  3. D-Rok Says:

    ^^^garro,

    R. White just got shoved into his locker by new team captain, Mr. Wirfs.

  4. Da Bucs Guy Says:

    He should have choose 1.3.

So it would match his yards per carry average this year.

Even a simple number change brings an onslaught of criticism.

    -Coffee, check

So many Nancy’s getting all worked up over some jabs – take a chill pill bro it’s just a blog

Dude is trying to be the man, we shall see…

I just don’t see how that slim frame of his is going take 17 games of pounding

Must have a stable of backs unless you have one of the elites and he isn’t one of them

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

The number change makes no difference to me. I hope he lights it up, regardless of who we draft.

Maybe the new number represents the Bucs rushing attack this year…#1 in the league!!!

  16. HC Grover Says:

    1 is the lonelyest number.

  17. Bucsalltheway Says:

Because that’s how many yds per tote he will get in year 2…year 1 he didn’t take the nfl by surprise c’mon folks

  18. Brandon Says:

I think Michael Morton was wearing the number one when he was the first player to ever return a kickoff for a TD… in preseason.

  19. Infomeplease Says:

He seems to have set high expectations for himself! As a fan, I hope he lives up them.

  20. Goatfarmer Says:

He’s trying to remove the stain on the number left by useless Joleen DardOn.

  21. Ugotrobbed Says:

2 can be as bad as 1, it’s the loneliness number since number 1…

  22. Locked In Says:

    I always liked Iggy

  23. jimmy Says:

Prove you f#cking belong in the NFL first before crying to your coach you need to gloss yourself with a better number!

How about putting numbers up on the field first? Little f#cking baby. Bowles should have told him, “You need a new number? Well I need 800 yards from you first. Then we’ll talk numbers. So how are you making yourself a better player right now sitting in my office crying about your number?”

This dude sure has his priorities right.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I like the change to number 1…it’s like he’s sending the message claiming the starting role and no one will take it from him.

I’m not superstitious, so I don’t care what anyone has done wearing the number in the past. Knock on wood.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @jimmy

    Sheesh…lol

  26. Nicky666 Says:

White will be fine he looks like a Leveon Bell clone – can’t teach his vision or how smooth / fluid he is when he runs with the ball – I have a feeling Canales will get the best out of him – gotta remember this kid was playing in an offense run by Leftwich – basically the equivalent of playing with one arm tied behind your back given how porous his play calling was. GO BUCS 🙂

  27. Nicky666 Says:

    Poor not porous***** LOL

  28. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Trade Devin White to KC for a 4th and Isaiah Pacheco and I’d be thrilled. That RB has got heart and energy. Rashad thinks he’s better than he actually is.

  29. Fred McNeil Says:

Iggy was a pretty good kicker till he got mixed up with drugs. When Ray Perkins was calling out the roster names during his first practice with the team called him Donald Kicker.
