Jason Licht On Friday’s Selections

April 28th, 2023

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

OK, so now we have the answer of the day, as Joe shared earlier.

* Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht solved today’s riddle. Licht said “right now” the Bucs see second-round pick Cody Mauch as a guard. Licht added he could probably play anywhere on the line, but the Bucs see him “right now” as an interior offensive lineman.

* On edge rusher third-round pick YaYa Diaby, Licht said many speed rushers get figured out by defenses eventually and thus neutralized. Diaby, Licht said, has speed and power and can quickly transition from speed to power.

* When asked if Diaby could make an impact right away, Licht cautioned that’s a trap for folks to think just because an edge rusher is drafted, he’s ready to rock. Licht said “none of them” are finished products, no matter if they are the first pick in the draft or last.

* Licht was asked if he was concerned with having too many interior offensive linemen. Licht said, “No. Not at all.” Licht didn’t admit if he was “flooding” the Bucs roster with guards hoping one or two shake out as top shelf starters but he did say there are general managers that will do that at a specific position.

* The Bucs currently do not have a fourth-round draft pick when the draft resumes Saturday. Licht added that fact is “Killing me.” Licht added that when he was younger he would be very inclined to swing a deal to recoup a fourth-round pick. He’s learned patience since. Still, Licht did not deny the Bucs could trade up tomorrow.

Jason just got jealous, a kicker went in the 3rd round

  2. Destinjohnny Says:

    No feeling the picks bro.
1st will work on passing downs from the inside. Liability in the run.
    2nd dude is a project
3rd will dazzle you with his athletic ability but has no instincts.
    Think Justin Evans

  3. Rod Munch Says:

All of these guards that Licht drafts, they were all tackles in college. Also you can NEVER have too much depth on your lines, be it offensive or defensive.

I loved the picks so far. We’ll see if the players work out or not, but this is how you should be building a team.

  4. Scott Says:

Serious rebuilding / figuring things out year. I’m ok with that.

  5. CrackWise Says:

If your gonna go run heavy, you better have a bunch of big men to keep the wheels turning all season. They will likely keep an extra OL guy or two on the roster this year for that reason alone.

  6. sasquatch Says:

There’s candidates in round 4 who could help us. A RB, maybe a TE. Trade our 4th rounder in ’24 plus a 7th rounder to hop in tomorrow.

  7. MadMax Says:

Mauch is such an authentic guy! He’ll be starting day 1.

I hate i never heard of Yaya, crazy name, but I’ll dive in after i make up for my sleep deprived state ive been in lately…ive got to start saving vacation days for this time of year….I love the draft!

  8. Rod Munch Says:

sasquatch – To trade up to the bottom of the 5th round last year, the Bucs had to give up a 4th this year, you’d have to give up at least a 3rd next year to get into the 4th this year – and this is considered a pretty weak draft overall, so there’s no value there. A 3rd next year is like a 2nd this year.

  9. Stanglassman Says:

The Bucs should move up into the 4th and go get Clark Phillip cb out of Utah. Potential starting nickel.

  10. Goatfarmer Says:

Diva to Arizona for Baker, a 4th and an early pick next year.

And Annie and Kay both sit on Ira’s lap next videocast. If ya don’t dream, ya don’t dream.

  11. Buccos Says:

Yes it’s like the time value of money

  12. Obvious Says:

Well he accomplished competition and depth across both lines.

    Competition galore.

    Yaya to PUSH JTS
Kancey for the 3 tech as well as to push Hall in the 5 tech
Mauch to PUSH Every Guard fighting for a JOB!

Leaving MASSIVE depth along the O line except the tackle position. It still feels a little shaky there. I sure hope they are right about Wirfs moving and Geodeke being capable of being whole in the right tackle spot. Now, Mauch IS a left tackle but most feel he’s better as a guard so it sure would be nice to feel secure concerning the tackle position. I’m just not there yet. We will see.

Also I was sad to see Achane go. SUCKS! But it is what it is. Plus, we STILL don’t have a new TE either.

Overall I’m pleased with the guys and positions we’ve picked up so far. Impressed with our first round pick. Very pleased and pleasantly surprised.

Regretting the loss of the forth round loss last year but again, it is what it is.

I FEEL some wheeling and dealing about to go down! Sure would have been nice to have been rewarded some higher level Comp Picks this year. Are we supposed to get next season? Whatever happened to those? If we are due some next year, I can almost GUARANTEE some wheeling and dealing tomorrow…

  13. Obvious Says:

Nice try Sasquatch. I know you must be tired or joking. NOBODY is going to give up their 4th round pick for a seventh rounder next year.

    But hey, SURE!

  14. Heath Hunt Says:

I kind of like this draft so far. It’s basically a total reset. Admitting the last few drafts have gone wrong but trying to fix it soon instead of letting the mistakes continue to play. JTS, Hall and Goedeke were mistakes. Move on quickly and get better. No problem with that.

  15. Nicky666 Says:

Love this draft! Licht proving once again he knows what he’s doing. Really excited to see the newer younger version of this team take the field – I know alot of people feel we are rebuilding but I can see this team being compeitive THIS year – barring some truly awful QB play I feel like this team will be in the hunt for the division crown at the end of the season – really stoked on the direction of the franchise post Brady. Cheers guys! GO BUCS! 🙂

  16. MadMax Says:

Well we hit the D line twice and O line once…..so i think its time for a DB….Mekhi Garner…might have to spend a trade up or he might be there when we pick next.

Then we go Stetson for that 3rd QB in the room for Canales to have fun with….

  17. Dave Says:

Loving this draft so far, it’s everything I’ve been saying the last few months… OL& DL. If you do not win the trenches, you lose and they got beat in the trenches last year on both sides of the ball.

  18. Dom N. Nick Says:

Love the first three pics are in the trenches.

I wonder if Hainsey can play tackle. IIRC he was a tackle in college. Also new FA pickup Feiler could be able to start at RT or function as a swing tackle.

    LT Wirfs
LG Leveritt/Hainsey/Jensen if Hainsey plays C
    C Jensen or Hainsey
    RG Mauch or Stinnie
RT Goedeke or Feiler with the other as swing tackle

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

Goedonkey will run the scout team at QB.

  20. 1#bucsfan Says:

Beef. Like it. Still don’t get one some of y’all think a player is a busy just after 1 season. Hall n other guy I can’t spell arnt busy yet. They got 2 more season to develop. Jason finds good O-linemen n the coaches do a great job at developing them. Geodke will be no diff same with MR no teeth. DE is a totally diff story. JTS really needs to breakout or he will deff be a bust. Jury is still out on hall 1season if not showing up doesn’t qualify as bust.

  21. Coburn Says:

It’s not just giving up on guys. Hedging their bets? Maybe. But if everyone panned out it still wouldn’t be a bad thing. You want 3 good edge rushers a d you want a good guy to rotate with your 3 down linemen too

  22. teacherman777 Says:

Yaya is is the Arabic name for John the Baptist.

You know? The cousin of Jesus.

Go check out the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Essenes.

  23. Pryda…sec147 Says:

I love the trench picks we sure need new talent on the line

  24. garro Says:

No 4th round pick is killing me too Jason.

Can we get a 4th this year and a second next year for D White please.

  25. Brandon Says:

Anybody understand the fascination Licht has with long-haired gingers?

    Jensen
    Goedeke
    Kieft
    Mauch

That’s gotta be most of the long haired gingers in the league and we have em. It’s almost comical. If a dude has long red hair, you already know he’s high on our wish list.

  26. Beej Says:

I’m getting the impression owing to the picks thus far, that they’re happy with Goedeke and Brandon Walton at RT. No way you’re gonna find a starting RT in the 5th, and we certainly can’t afford to pay a free agent

  27. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey Teachereman, John the Baptist is the only spiritual leader I would want to go and worship with. He was almost Pegan in his worship location and style.
    Blessed Be!
