Best Available Players Today — Day 3 Of The NFL Draft

April 29th, 2023

Hidden gems?

Every year, gems are found on Day 3 of the draft.

Just look at last year’s draft!  The Seahawks selected cornerback Tariq Woolen in Round 5 and he made the Pro Bowl after hauling in six interceptions. Chiefs starting corner Jaylen Watson was a seventh-round pick for the Super Bowl champs, and he had two interceptions in three postseason games. Oh, and the Chiefs’ top running back also was a seventh-rounder out of Rutgers, Isaiah Pacheco.

The Falcons got a 1,000-yard rusher in Round 5 last year and the Texans found their punishing running back one pick after the Bucs opened Round 4 with starting tight end Cade Otton.

Should Joe keep going?

Jordan Whitehead, Kwon Alexander, Will Gholston, Tanard Jackson, Santana Dotson and the good Dexter Jackson are just some decent players found by the Bucs in the fourth round or later.

So here is a list Joe cobbled together from Daniel Jeremiah’s top players still available today in the draft in Rounds 4 through 7.

Currently, the Bucs do not have a fourth-round pick. It was traded away to Jacksonville last year for fifth- and seventh-round picks in 2022.

Offensive tackle
Dawand Jones (Ohio State), Blake Freeland (BYU), Warren McClendon (Georgia).

Running back
Roschon Johnson (Texas), DeWayne McBride (UAB), Chase Brown (Illinois).

Safety
Jammie Robinson (Florida State), Antonio Johnson (Texas A&M).

After the fourth round, teams are very much looking for special teams players.

  1. Magicbuc Says:

Go get Debo (Dewayne McBride)… he played at Ocala Vanguard High School!

  2. Dre bucs fan Says:

How is Dawand Jones still available, what happened? Btw it was great seeing ira and talking some football Thursday night at the brewery! He’s definitely a real down to earth human being and my girlfriend couldn’t help but notice his great podcast voice lol thanks ira

  3. dmatt Says:

Wow if we can get FSU Jammie Robinson that would be a big plus at safety. He can hit n has natural instincts. He’s an aggressive player. We need to stack up on defense to prepare for the other three teams in the south with what they are trying to do on offense.

  4. Posey99 Says:

I’ll echo why is dewand still available. At one point he was projected as a late first rounder. I guess he doesn’t move well enough to beat the speed rushers ?

  5. Hodad Says:

Could the Bucs trade a veteran player today for a 4th rounder? I got a strange feeling Jensen is going to be dealt. I think Mauch was drafted to replace Jensen down the road, but if we trade Jensen, and his salary, that could happen sooner, rather then next year. We’d have a real young O line with high picks that could grow nicely together. Jensen has business in Denver, do they need a vet center?

  6. FrontFour Says:

Godard, I wondered the same thing. I’d hate to lose Jensen, but not sure we have anything to offer to get back into the 4th.

  7. gotbbucs Says:

We’re gonna miss out on alot of our targets in the 4th round. Sucks.

  8. teacherman777 Says:

Trade Devin White for a 4th rounder this year and a 2nd round pick next year

  9. gotbbucs Says:

They’re not trading Jensen for a 4th round pick. C’mon.

  10. darengibo Says:

I feel Licht will figure out a way to get back into the 4th!

  11. Geno711 Says:

Some others that fit Dane Brugler’s list:

    Nick Saldiveri, OT, Old Dominion
    Braeden Daniels, OT, Utah

    Israel Abanikanda, RB, Pitt
    Zach Evans, RB, Ole Miss

    JL Skinner, S, Boise State
    Christopher Smith, S, Georgia

  12. Dooley Says:

I know Licht is trying to remain patient, but screw and there are some players that could go in the 4th round we could use. Still can add a NCB, Safety, ILB, RB, WR/TE, and OT

  13. Canabuc Says:

I read somewhere that the reason that dewand is still available is that he had a bad combine he failed all of his interviews he was out of shape at his pro day and looks to be somebody who could be out of the league in a couple of years because they don’t seem to have the drive to be an NFL player.

  14. Mr. Editor Says:

Yes, the “good” Dexter Jackson. The “bad” Dexter Jackson was drafted in the 2nd round! That set back the special teams unit for a while. Let’s draft a RB!

  15. Marine Buc Says:

Everyone is all hung up on OTs having long enough arms…

Dewand Jones has the longest arms in the draft yet there he sits.

  16. Marine Buc Says:

Licht needs to package our 5th and 6th to move up into the 4th round… Still some quality players at positions we need…

    RB
    DB
    QB3
    WR
    TE
    ILB

  17. Dooley Says:

    @Geno

Izzy Abanikanda would be a steal in the 4th if we can get into position to get him, kid has big play speed and is coming from an offense that played a ton of inside zone running the ball.

  18. MadMax Says:

    RB Deuce Vaughn
    CB/S Mekhi Garner
    QB Stetson Bennett

  19. MadMax Says:

    TE Zack Kuntz

  20. Paul Wartenberg Says:

of the needs for the draft, the Bucs still need depth help for Safety, Cornerback, and Tight End. I’d also argue Wide Receiver because IMHO it’s just Evans, Godwin, and Gage and I have no idea who the backups are left.

  21. Bojim Says:

    Roschan Johnson would be nice.

  22. Noleriff Says:

Trade Diva White for a 4th round this year and a 2nd or 3rd next year…. I’m also getting the strong feeling that Stetson Bennett winds up in pewter in the 5th or 6th round.

  23. Letsbucinggo Says:

    How about a kicker!

  24. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Izzy Abanikanda don’t want none if you ain’t got buns Hun.

  25. Dooley Says:

    @Paul

Kaylon Geiger & Devin Thompkins are who we’ve got left at WR behind our top 3. I agree, I’d prioritize adding a WR before the end of today. Good thing is we’ve got 5 picks left and there’s plenty of valued talent relative to what we need at WR4-5/6 left heading into day 3.

  26. NcKe Says:

    AAntonio Johnson

  27. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Mad Max

Can you believe TE D. Washington fell all the way to pick #93?

    What up with that?

  28. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Bucs need a slot corner and Clark phillips III Utah is very good.

  29. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Swollen knees at the combine and other injury concerns drove D. washington down.

  30. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

  34. Dooley Says:

Rezjohn Wright at CB would be nice and kind of surprised Kyu Blu Kelly is still undrafted, but half of his hype was about being Brian Kellys’ kid

  35. MadMax Says:

@Marine, yeah….rumor was a knee issue….maybe it was discovered during an exam….I still wouldve took him tho…his combine was awesome! And maybe I was just higher on him than most….I hit on most but miss on a few here and there lol…its all good. We’ll see.

Zack Kuntz is still there. And Mekhi Garner and Deuce Vaughn.

  36. HA-HA-HA Says:

I’m coming around to this pick.
1st, it gives them depth on the line.
2nd, it gives them a slashing penetrator against the RPO.

  37. MadMax Says:

Btw, Jensen wont be traded, he texted Licht saying he and Mauch are gonna ef things up! LOL, I love that!!!

  38. MadMax Says:

Yeah, what was the deal with him LUV?

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    Devin White and a 5th for a 4th .

Everyone decent will be gone after the 4th.

  40. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Kuntz has been one of my sleep prospects TE for awhile – but if WR Elijah Higgins converts over; he could be solid as well.

  49. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    No doubt!

  50. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Man though the transfer portal helps in a lot of cases it also hurts some of these kids.

Check out Noah Taylor when you get a chance.

  51. MadMax Says:

Ok will do….. check out rb Deuce Vaughn when you get a chance…he so small and fast, he might fit through some holes just fine!

man pick 153 cant get here soon enough

  52. MadMax Says:

Noah Taylors stats dropped a lot in 2022, was looking good before that….something happened

  53. MadMax Says:

  54. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  62. Oneilbuc Says:

Great job Jason Licht I’ve been waiting for us to draft this way for years!!! When you build a team the defense must be the first priority especially in the trenches than the offense.
