“Todd Was At A Disadvantage”

March 29th, 2023

Buccaneers co-owner Joel Glazer.

The NFL Annual Meeting is a time for what Joe likes to call the billionaire-to-blogger chat.

Team Glazer attends with the other NFL ownership groups and there’s always time for JoeBucsFan.com on and off the record at the swanky host resort.

When the microphone turned on yesterday, Joe asked about the face of the franchise.

JoeBucsFan.com: Todd Bowles took over as head coach less than one year ago today under unique circumstances late in the offseason. How do you evaluate his first season?

Bucs co-owner Joel Glazer: He started the season late. Usually, a coach gets hired earlier in the hiring cycle, so I think Todd was at a disadvantage. But I think there was some good last season, there were positives. Collectively, everybody would have liked a better end result but overall I think he handled the team well. Our defense played well and Todd always has the defense ready to go. The offense, I know everybody was frustrated.  It was a lot of unique circumstances last year but overall we’re pleased with how Todd handled the season.

So there you have it. Team Glazer is “pleased” and recognizes Bowles got a very late jump on his first season as head coach.

Team Glazer said the Bucs defense was always ready to play. Joe couldn’t agree because of what happened in the playoffs and late in the season? Dallas went 3-and-out on its first two possessions but then reeled off three 80-yard-or-more drives to close the first half. After halftime, Dallas came out with an 88-yard drive to put the game away.

In their final six games of last season, the Bucs allowed 28.3 points per game. Still, the defense had a solid year overall.

Later this week is Bowles’ one-year anniversary. So he really was jumping into a unique situation with a quarterback who wasn’t all-in until late in the summer.

“Disadvantage” sounds ableist and harsh. Let’s just call Todd “special.”

Every owner wants to give his coaches a positive boost. Let’s see how the owners feel if and when the Bucs win/lose column goes south.

Todd will always be at a disadvantage…..because of Todd.

    @Joe
“Dallas went 3-and-out on its first two possessions but then reeled off three 80-yard-or-more drives to close the first half.”

It was 6-0 Cowboys at the end of the first quarter and we were on Dallas’ 7 or 8 yard line to start the 2nd. The play call was an RPO and instead of stuffing the ball into Whites’ gut to let him run the stretch to the strong side, Mr. Brady tried threading a needle on 2nd & Goal to Godwin and threw a pick. That was our 3rd offensive drive after going 3 & out on our 1st two offensives drive which took a combined 1:47 seconds of the clock in a 15 minute quarter.

  8. Dooley Says:

Tom Brady threw a pick in the endzone on our 3rd overall drive which was the 1st drive we didn’t go 3 and out lol

  9. Dooley Says:

It was an RPO on the 7 yard line on 2nd & goal our offense, in the first quarter of that wild card game was our offense was only on the field for 1 minute and 47 seconds. Before that pick we were only down 6-0

  10. JN Says:

What a bunch of crap by Team Glazer. He sounds like Biden’s press secretary… trying to sell us fans a pile of crap like we are all stupid.

  11. Hodad Says:

Well if the Glazers are giving Todd a mulligan for last season, and the Glazers usually give coaches two years, we have at least another two years of Bowles. He’ll also get a pass somewhat this year because of our cap. So for all you Todd bashers bad news, Todd’s going to be H.C. for awhile. Get use to it.

  12. SufferingSince76 Says:

So Joel likes what Todd did? Too bad the paying customers think otherwise. On the other hand, making season ticket holders pay for two years at once smells like they knew they had a stinker on their hands.

  13. SufferingSince76 Says:

Hodad, Todd gets bashed because he sucks as a head coach. You may suffer losers, but very few other people do.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

JN … ‘What a bunch of crap by Team Glazer. He sounds like Biden’s press secretary… trying to sell us fans a pile of crap like we are all stupid.’

You mean the Team Glazer that OWNS the Bucs & that has the most to lose if the team has a crappy season? The same Team Glazer that’s paying all the bills, that has their choice of who to put in charge of their multi-billion dollar franchise and that CHOSE Todd Bowles to lead it for 1 more year? THAT TEAM GLAZER?

Personally I don’t think Joel Glazer is trying to sell you anything. Sounds to me like you’ve already made up your mind about this team … and about our nation … so why should they bother trying to sell you anything?

  15. JN Says:

DefenseRule – owner making excuses for his coach. Perhaps I should have said “spin” and not “sell”. Either way I think Team Glazer is full of it. The only disadvantage Bowles has is he’s not a good head coach… good DC yes.

  16. FlBoy84 Says:

Honestly don’t expect them to say anything else, but they’d have to be blind not to see Bowles’ poor decision making and lack of team effort/motivation last season. It’d be slightly understandable if he were a brand new HC, but the dude is going into his 6th season leading a team, not sure how many more excuses can be made for the guy.

  17. NYbucsfan Says:

Bowles stinks and they know it.

  18. BUCman Says:

Wondering what he will say 10 months from now when they announce Bowles has been fired 🤔

  19. Redeemer Says:

The defense got roasted when the faced a good offense last season. Does anyone here really think things would’ve looked different, if Bowles had been named HC earlier? I seriously doubt it.

  20. Marine Buc Says:

    LOL!

“It was a lot of unique circumstances last year”

    Translation:

BA screwed us and we had no choice but to hire the NFL’s most incompetent Offensive Coordinator to work with the NFL’s biggest Prima Donna.

  21. Dooley Says:

“The defense got roasted when the faced a good offense last season.”

Yet, our offense regressed the most lol

  22. Letsbucinggo Says:

See how much the Glazers will be exhilarated with Blozo this year after 4 or 5 wins ticket sales plummeting. Bowles won 10 games with the Jets his first year then 5 wins then 5 wins again then 4 I believe. So at that rate we should when 4 next year then 4 the year after and 2 his final year. So if the Glazers have any brain cells left they should dump this guy after 2023. Some 2024 mock drafts already have the Bucs picking first. Hopefully he will show some progress!

  23. Canabuc Says:

TO be fair it was late in the process. did not give Todd much opportunity to hire coaches and coordinators of his choice. He was shoe horned into Arians system whether it was his choice or not.

Look already at some of the hires

Innovative Coordinator that I think will give us a better offence despite no Brady. Great coach for run game coming form Cowboys as well as Linebackers Coach from Cowboys.

Now if we can draft right and pick up some depth in free agency after roster cuts I think this team can be very competitive with maybe only the Eagles 49ers possibly cowboys and or vikings being better rosters.

  24. Redeemer Says:

Dooley, the offense regressed because of a horrible OC, a wretched running game and a bunch of under performing wide recievers all lead by Todd Bowles. Last I checked, the HC controls the team. The time of possession was negligible, but for a couple games. That tells me this defense was vastly overrated last season.

  25. OR Buc Says:

It certainly doesn’t help when Sack Barrett got injured and we couldn’t muster much of a pass rush. I’m sure that played into those last six games Joe. Not to mention JPP wasn’t on our team, which was a better second pass rusher than all the others we had last year. Bowles defense is predicated on getting pressure.

  26. BucU Says:

Total politically correct bull. Articles like this piss me off. Just makes me dislike Bowles even more.

  27. Dooley Says:

    @Redeemer

You forgot about our 45 year old QB being skiddish in the pocket all-season, I’ll give you WRs dropping his passes, but there were 4-5 separate occasions when Mike Evans was “wide ass open” but because of fear of the rush he and his quick release got ahead of play progression. Couldn’t convert on 3rd or 4th down, regressed in the redzone, regressed in down field passing attempts and completions.

Our offense struggled against EVERY defense they played, couldn’t control TOP, because they sucked at sustaining drive and the last I checked our defense spent more time on the field than the offense. Honestly, the offense in 2019 was better than it was in 2022, but both those offense did our defense absolutley NO FAVORS. Every “comeback” credited to Brady, came off our defnese being able to stay in the game, except for the KC & SF games where we know our offense couldn’t keep up with the rate either of those teams scored points.

As far as HC control goes, you’ve mentioned you played ball at a level beyond HS football right? When you or any teammate underperformed, missed a play, drew a flag how did your HC react to the team, what was the message and who was held accountable for the performance of the team on the field of play? I get holding Bowles accountable, but some of the teams shortcomings especially on offense boils down to the players in terms of garnering results, but sure stick to the “blame canada” of Bucs fandom.

  28. Defense Rules Says:

JN … No way that Joel Glazer is going to throw his HC under the bus (especially in March). But this is their billion dollar baby, and no way they’d entrust it to just any old coach. They obviously believe that Todd Bowles can get this team back on the right track. As we all know, time will tell.

  29. DingleBerry Says:

We’ll see just how pleased they are after we finish last place in a weak division.

  30. Richard Says:

What did anyone expect JG to say…” well we kept Bowles on even though he was a very poor head coach”? Once again, the film doesn’t lie….his decision making is horrible…the overly cautious and non aggressive approach was a complete disaster and his past head coaching record of 37% winning in undeniable. He had no qualifications to take over a team deemed by many as a SB contender yet the Glazers and BUD Lyght did exactly that….because BA planned it that way. He said TB was ready and wanted him to inherit a good competive team….this was a disastrous decision!!!! Remember the famous words from a former player of Bowles…” they’re playing like a team coached by Todd Bowles”…Boomer Esiason…CBS Sports!!!! His contract should have never been renewed…for obvious reasons

  31. RuKa_44 Says:

Translation: “Last year Todd had an excuse, this year he doesn’t. Show results or Todd is gone”

  32. Goatfarmer Says:

Hey, Joel — how many games did your brain dead head coich cost the team in 2022? How about those flaccid game day performances, eh?!

Making the playoffs with his 4th consecutive losing season as a head coich is quite an accomplishment. And how about how well he prepared his team for the Cowboys playoff game? The ‘Boys sucked in the games leading up to that and sucked harder after the Bucs game. But Toad surely did unprepare his team the best he knew how.

Circus clowns hate being compared to Bloweszo.

  33. Redeemer Says:

Dooley, I looked this up a while ago. The Time Of Possession was not the issue. It was almost the equal, save a couple games. As for Brady, you try and play QB without a running game. No QB threw into coverage (7 or more defenders) more than Brady last season. You can nit pick throws here and there, but no QB wants to get hit. Would you rather Brady took hit after hit, then not be available? The offense was horrible, but that doesn’t mean the defense was good. Bowles is a bad HC, evidenced by his record. Or more appropriately, a glorified DC living in the past.

  34. BucsFan81 Says:

This is just typical PR from ownership. They are not going to come out and say the offense sucked last year and we are tired of negative 1 yard plays up the middle to start every drive. They are not going to say Bowles is on the hot seat and he may be fired after this year if the team doesn’t show some kind of improvement.

  37. Goatfarmer Says:

Redeemer, excellent points brother, although the Trask Suppression Conspiracy club would have cheered if Brady got injured, then they’d only have had to wait for Goobert to be injured, and then they’d only have had to wait for Griff to be injured, and then their porn star would have had his moment to prove everyone wrong!

  38. Dooley Says:

    @Redeemer

The defense carried it’s weight more often than the offense did, and our defense doesn’t have a Tom Brady. Again, look at the avg point allowed by our defense from 2021 to 2022 and then look at the average point per game between 2021 & 2022. We went from 4th to 25th in scoring in a years time. We lost a game by 2 point in a contest we only allowed 14. Re-read Joel Glazers comment:

“Our defense played well and Todd always has the defense ready to go. The offense, I know everybody was frustrated.”

Ownership apparently likes Bowles enough for one more chance and I’m sure your or my opinion didn’t factor in to their decision on whether or not to keep their employee.

  39. Greg Says:

That’s great. Speaking for myself, I was not “pleased”.

  40. Goatfarmer Says:

Ownership knows that their hands, and Jason’s hands, were tied to Bloweszo this year. It won’t be that way in 10 months.

  41. Hodad Says:

I know why Todd gets bashed, I ain’t a fan. I’m stating what the Glazers will probably do, IMO.

  42. SB~LV Says:

Papa Glazer is telling the 3 stooges to sell the team

  43. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Todd was handicapped… Mentally.

  44. Winky Says:

When you realize your potential for growth, you then can see it in everyone.

When you are on my team, unless you’re an outright jerk, you have my support.

I’m excited to see Bowles evolution along with OUR team.

Have some pride. At least, don’t demoralize yourself. We are all imperfect and that’s okay.

    Go BUCS!!!

  45. Voice of Truth Says:

If getting a late start is an excuse, does being 55mil over the cap and having the weakest qb room in the nfl led by a first time OC qualify also?

Joel et al will, by late October, be making calls to the new HC candidates

  46. Pewter Power Says:

Only reliable safety we have so far is Winfield. With Logan Ryan playing hurt and mike Edwards playing below expectations we got torched in that playoff game. Ryan was off to a great start before injury. But we need youth and speed back there. Linebacker play wasn’t stellar either

  47. August 1976 Buc Says:

The Dallas playoff game was a microcosm of the season. They played just like they had played, game in and game out with the exception being the Munich game and 2nd Carolina game, where Brady exploited the Carolina DB for 3 plays. Glazer basically just gave the kind of interview that does not encourage fans at all. Again his characterization of the team overall was not believable when seeing the weekly under performing team play.

  48. Goatfarmer Says:

A good question to ask the Bloweszo – what did you do in practice to be so thoroughly unprepared for the playoff game against Dallas, and what did you do during the game to have your team fail so miserably on the field, in front of the whole world?

  49. Goatfarmer Says:

Hey Todd – how does it feel to be the only head coach to oversee a losing season for Tom Brady? That right there is a unique accomplishment.

    “smart people” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  51. Cobraboy Says:

Bowles has a losing record as a HC. The Dallas blow-out should be pinned on that Bowles’ directed D as much as the feckless Brady O.

@DR: the Glazers…and every other NFL owner…make a s#!tton of $$$ whether their team wins or loses.

Maybe a little more if they win, but they are in a no-lose situation. It’s not like winning will affect their financial lives significantly more than losing.

  52. HC Grover Says:

There is one born every minute….Also great reporting by Joe. Very interesting and good info.

  53. Mike Johnson Says:

Some peoples memories are short. Remember during that Dallas playoff game last year? We were behind 6-0. And the GOAT threw that interception in the endzone? Dallas never looked back after that. That was not Bowles people..that was Tom Brady. Just refreshing forgetting minds.

  54. Redeemer Says:

@Dooley, now you’re changing the premise of the argument. I’ll firmly admit that our offense struggled mightily last year. What I won’t admit is that Tom Brady was anywhere near at the top of the reasons why. Yep the defense held a bunch of bad offenses in check, and held their own for a couple quarters against a few good ones. Thatz far from a quote unquote good defense. You bowles bobo’s. Really can’t wait to be 6-11. Now ownership is a hill to die on? Please. I enjoyed winning. The man mostly responsible is retired. I’ve been a fan since the Steve Young days. Maybe you hated him too.

  55. VATom Says:

Like many of the people of Tampa area the Glazers are nice people. The Bucs are a nice organization. They emphasize good players and team values. They aren’t cut throats like NE or DL. And that feels like the reason we are always so middle of the road. Which is too bad.

  56. Delusional Intelligence Says:

So…. If we won the Super Bowl last year it would have been because of Brady, but because we lost it was because of Bowles?

Sorry delusion and I go together.

  57. garro Says:

And the litany of excuses continues for Bowles… despite the fact that he took a Superbowl contender and sh** the bed!

  58. LakelandSteve Says:

If Bowles is such a great defensive coach, why do our defensive players not know where to be on defensive calls at the end of the season? Tired of seeing guys running wide open in the secondary on blow pass coverages. Bowles response, ‘I don’t know why that happened that play was a first day install’. Meaning some type of base coverage. If the architect of the defense doesn’t know why guys are blowing simple coverages, who does? Why does it continue to happen? But he’s a defensive guru!

  59. SlyPirate Says:

    THAT WAS VERY PC …

Good answer. What else can they say?
