Todd Bowles Says Team Glazer Will Be In On Talks Prior To Free Agency

March 7th, 2023

Joe often hears Bucs fans wondering aloud about Team Glazer’s involvement in player personnel happenings.

It’s a gray area known only to Bucs general managers and head coaches, and Joe assumes those guys are sworn to a lifetime of secrecy via some form of secret code, handshake or contractual clause.

Joe remembers all the controversy after former Bucs kicker Roberto Aguayo flamed out badly. A CBS report emerged that Team Glazer forced the pick in Round 2 in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Joe put team co-chairman Joel Glazer on the witness stand for the report and he came out swinging.

JoeBucsFan.com: CBS put out a report, it came from Pete Prisco their senior writer. He said ‘ownership who pushed the draft pick,’ referring to Roberto Aguayo, that it was a Team Glazer pick. Is that ridiculous?

Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer: We have never, ever, told our general manager who to pick in the draft. That’s all I can say. We know what’s happening. They explain to us why they’re doing things. But we have never done that. I will say this much; one thing we stress is the importance of all phases of the game, special teams, offense, defense. But that was an inaccurate report.

Joe gets that NFL owners stick their noses in key personnel decisions and team direction. They should. But that doesn’t mean they make the calls. It’s certainly appropriate for an owner to express preferences, but that doesn’t mean a GM must oblige. Not every billionaire wants to be surrounded by a bunch of yes-men.

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles visited with CBS during the NFL Scouting Combine last week and evoked the “G” word (Glazer) when discussing paying a quarterback in free agency this month.

The “G” world is rarely spoken in that context, so it prompted Joe to type this post.

“It’s gotta make sense for us [financially], as well,” Bowles said. “So as me and Jason sit down with the Glazer family and we talk about these things going forward, we’ll see what materializes before free agency. Obviously, before free agency, everyone is at top dollar price right now. So, you know, you kind of wait and see how everything goes.”

As Joe has written and said, at least one big-name experienced quarterback will have nowhere near the market he expects in free agency. If Jimmy Garoppolo or Baker Mayfield could be had on the super cheap, like $6 million plus lots of incentives, then Joe suspects the Bucs would pounce.

If not, expect the Drew Locks of the world to battle it out with Kyle Trask.

Would the Bucs entertain the thought of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, returning? (He’s about to get released by the Saints.) Joe suspects there is no chance.

Bowles would probably have heart palpitations at the thought of Jameis turning the ball over repeatedly, and Team Glazer would be sure to make it known that Jameis is not a quarterback of interest.

Glazers need to sell the team

  2. Dooley Says:

    I mean, it’s their monies

  3. Steven007 Says:

Yep, the ownership group that has somehow managed to grab two super bowls in two different era’s of Buc ball needs to sell the team now. What are you smoking dude? Ridiculous.

  4. Buc4evr Says:

It will be interesting to see where Jameis ends up. After what he put the franchise through I would find it hard to believe the Glazers would want to waste any more time or money on the guy.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The Glazers are not from the Jerry Jones school of ownership…..they probably give broad guidelines to their GMs & HCs

This year it would probably be…….don’t spend a bunch of money on a QB……replace some older, more expensive players with draft picks.

    Same advice TBBF gives.

  6. Dre bucs fan Says:

We just witnessed our rival whos 30 million plus over the salary cap give a man 100 million guaranteed money…i don’t wanna hear nothing else about what BUCS can’t do because in FA because we don’t have the money…it’s all BS

  7. Dre bucs fan Says:

    *typo

  8. Defense Rules Says:

CBS (Pete Prisco?) … ‘Ownership pushed the draft pick,’ referring to Roberto Aguayo, that it was a Team Glazer pick.’

Joel Glazer … ‘We have never, ever, told our general manager who to pick in the draft. That’s all I can say.’

Interpretation of what Joel just said … ‘I will not throw Jason Licht under the bus. He screwed that one up all by himself.’

    Oh wait … thump thump.

  9. DBS Says:

And of course we always believe what the news media and their sources say. Just like we believe coach speak.

  10. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Yea,. Selling the team will take care of all the problems. What an idiot.

  11. Steven007 Says:

Dre, we all know, well most of us do, that the Bucs could certainly extend the kicking the can down the road scenario if they thought Derek Carr or one of the other average to below average quarterbacks who command much higher than average money were the answer this year. They are choosing instead to spend a year balancing the checkbook while trying to stay relevant. I am all for it as our most fans I know. Do you really think the Saints are winning the super bowl with Derek Carr? If not one could argue that it was wasted money.

Glazers need to sell the team
    ———————————————————————
You assert that they should sell the team. Who should they sell it to?
Be careful of what you wish for. The Glazers are a dramatic upgrade from Culverhouse who owned the Bucs prior.

The Bucs won two SuperBowls in about 27 years that the team has been owned by the Glazers. Some owners would trade a significant body part to achieve that same result.

More importantly, they’ve learned a LOT over the years. They’ve got a better understanding of what it really takes to win another one. I’m confident that they’re truly motivated to win another one and will do all they possibly can to make that happen as soon as possible.

You get what you pay for. You paid Brady you get a superbowl. You pay some of these retreads you get a top five draft pick.

  14. matthew veal Says:

    The glazers are good owners.

  15. Crickett Baker Says:

Compared to miserly Culverhouse the Glazers are GREAT owners!

  16. Tye Says:

Not usually a fan of owners involvement BUT Bowels 6 year resume is evidence he is horrible at team building…

Return of Jameis would be the biggest JOKE of Bucs history…
NO team wants that baggage to deal with as their starter!

  17. Dre bucs fan Says:

@steven your right bro, i agree 100 percent with you! All I’m saying is if Super Bowl is the goal EVERY YEAR then salary cap talk is BS lol, lastly carr is no Tom Brady but the saints have definitely become scary in the nfc, make no mistake carr is no slouch and he’s finally on a team with a top 5 defense

  18. Steven007 Says:

Dre, signing Derek Carr makes them as of this point in time the favorites to win to the vision, I agree. Of course the other teams haven’t settled their QB situations yet so that’s still remains to be seen. And of course the super bowl is the goal for 32 teams. And 31 are left disappointed. And I do agree that to an extent, salary cap talk is BS. But that also depends on the realistic goals of the team. We are almost certainly not winning the super bowl next year no matter which quarterback we signed with the possible exception of Rodgers and he actually is cost prohibitive and not a good fit here given his history playing on grass much less the fact that he would never follow Brady. And he’s a bit of a flake and may still retire from what I’ve heard. Though likely he ends up on the Jets. Will be fun to see him handling the New York media after years of kid gloves in Green Bay if that happens.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

There’s a lot of low IQ bandwagon riders who have zero historical knowledge of the team and make really stupid statements like ‘get rid of the Glazers’. They, of course, have no knowledge of the Bucs previous owners and what a disaster that was, and how the Bucs, until 2020, were literally the most losing team in all of professional sports. Meanwhile the Bucs have won 2 Super Bowls in the last 20-years, that’s a 10% championship rate, which is only behind one team in that time.

  20. Dooley Says:

    ^^^You’re one of them

  21. Ed Says:

Whats the big deal with Carr? He had plenty of good players on offense and the Raiders have 2 wild card losses in the 9 years he played there.

I’m not that impressed that he didn’t do better in a division that had the Chargers and Bronco’s, 2 very average teams to compete with and they still couldn’t get much going as far as a playoff contender.

The Saints are in a rebuild mode, we’ll see some improvement for them this season but they are still not a good team and with Carr, how many of their veterans will be on the street as he soaks up a big paycheck.

  22. #99 the Big fella Says:

The glaziers are the owners who got us 2 super Bowles.. Yet we still have idiots saying they need to sell the team. .. unbelievable what some of the fans spit out..

    =====================================

That’s a pretty low bar you set. A dead zebra’s carcass is a good owner compared to Culverhouse.

  26. stpetebucfan Says:

Why should the Glazers sell the team. Once they got past the financial struggle of leveraging themselves to the max to buy ManU they’ve been exemplary owners! For heaven’s sake it’s only been a few years since they delivered a Super Bowl!!!

They haven’t cheaped out in fact the team is more than 50 million over the cap.
Just because they don’t run their mouths like obnoxious Jerry Jones is a positive IMHO. I like the Glazers. They are now investing $$$ in our community including the purchase of the Vinoy in St. Pete. They are good community citizens. Why would anybody want to run them off? So we could get a Daniel Snyder or worse still another Culverhouse?

  29. Jimbo Says:

JL has mostly bad picks in the draft. He had some that were good, but 1 or 2 don’t make up for 20-30 bad ones. JL is a salesman. he sales his image to the glazers, but it’s just smoke and mirrors. Any of us could do better than him at picking players.
