Todd Bowles: Kyle Trask May Not Be Ready For A No. 2 Quarterback Role

March 6th, 2023

“Ignore the noise, Kyle, including me hanging with Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin this weekend at the UFC event.”

Joe’s been sitting on this one for several days. It was jarring and Joe needed time to process.

Todd Bowles did a media tour at the NFL Scouting Combine last week. After a side chat with Joe and local Tampa Bay media, Bowles went to a Combine podium to be peppered with questions by local and national media. Then he visited SiriusXM NFL Radio and CBS Sports before his longest and final stop with Joe at the Ira Kaufman Podcast, after which a Texas TV station asked him a couple of non-Bucs questions.

At the CBS set, NFL writer/analyst prickly Pete Prisco asked Bowles about Kyle Trask and his ability to start at quarterback.

Bowles had a quite a comment after noting Trask has gotten little action behind Tom Brady and Blaine Gabbert the past two years but has the work ethic and talent required of a starter.

“He just needs reps and everybody needs to see him to see exactly what he is, whether he’s a [No.] 1, a [No.] 2 or a [No.] 3,” Bowles said of Trask.

Joe really was shaken to hear Bowles say “No. 3” could be the level at which Trask belongs. So after two years it’s unclear whether Trask is at least a No. 2 quarterback?

Bowles is very careful with his words, so Joe didn’t hear that as some sort of slip-up.

  1. Chris Stewart Says:

Smoke screen, NFL types are perfect at telling media nothing and making it sound like something. After all, you guys need something to post about.

  2. Stevek Says:

This lines up with everything we’ve hear. Nothing is handed to him, and Bowles is playing coy with his QB.

What is he supposed to say, “we are paying the GOAT 35 million this year to be retired, and going to give a long, hard look at our former second round pick”.

I think Trask should get a shot to see what we have this year. I think this comment was Coach Bowles being very factual/coach speak.

  3. John Sinclear Says:

There you go again Joe – twisting the coach’s words. He said he needs to see if Trask is a #1 #2 or #3 QB. He did not say Trask may not be ready as a #2.

  4. SKBucsFan Says:

I don’t know about the rest of you but I trust Todd Bowls when it comes to evaluating offensive talent.
…I almost was able to type that with a straight face.

  5. Stevek Says:

I like Trask over the other NFC S QBs rostered right now. Including former number one overall QB “America’s QB”.

I see Joe’s fickle logic here lining up. Dominik is a “rockstar”, Jameis is “America’s QB”, and Trask “may not even be a third QB”. It’s all good, I understand wha this said, and bravo to Joe for getting us riled up on this one.

However, I still think Trask is going end up being pretty good. Just a hunch, and excited for his shot. Especially after 5 years of America’s turnover machine. What could one season to evaluate our QB play in Trask really hurt, other than the FSU honks of course, or the Freemanites. Go Bucs!

  6. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

So they can’t tell whether a player on their roster for 2 years can be a starter in the NFL? Talk about inept coaches! Aren’t they paid big money to figure this stuff out?

  7. Tampamac Says:

Reminds me of 2014 when we had the murderers row of QB’s in Josh McCown and Mike Glennon.. I’m a Gators fan, but seems like this staff has ZERO confidence in Trask. We went from sugar to sh*t at QB in a hurry.

  8. ElioT Says:

    That’s great news, thanks Todd!

  9. Pryda sec 147 Says:

I think it’s the truth we just don’t know, he might be the next great QB or just another guy well have to wait and see

  10. Stevek Says:

I think if we really were down on Trask as an organization, they’d be pumping him up like crazy (trade value?).

I think because they show public lukewarm feelings, they feel confident in giving this kid a shot.

And, bring on competition and may the best QB win, just don’t mortgage draft capital for a QB this year, nor spend 15-20 million on a retread, scrub QB. See what Trask has and draft a guy in mid rounds, etc.

  11. Couch Fan Says:

It could be a smoke screen or it could just be Bowles being clueless as usual. I been saying it for awhile now and im going to keep saying it. Bowles refusal to allow Trask to sit beside and learn from the Goat on gamedays was a bad decision. We had the Goat and we didnt take advantage of it to its fullest potential. Instead we sat an old guy who didnt need the snaps or experience as the #2.

    ———

I don’t know about you, but our last super bowl was amazing. I’d take another rebuild to get to the pinnacle again.

    Would you?

Also, my belief is that Tom Brady was calling the shots and he demanded a veteran backup to help him prep. This allows Trask to learn and not be fetching coffees or picking up the pieces to Brady’s broken tablets lol.

It is a good thing that we were able to let Trask develop in a “Qb incubator” as Joe calls it. Line that saying.

  13. YucsBall Says:

    So much logic

  14. Marine Buc Says:

No big deal – there are plenty of cheap veteran QBs floating around…

Sign Gabbert/Baker/Wentz on a cheap one year deal.
Draft a project QB in rounds 3-6.
Let Trask compete for the starting gig in preseason.

If Trask can’t beat out Baket/Wentz/Gabbert – he doesn’t belong in the NFL.

    Simple as that.

And for the record – I hope we didn’t waste a 2nd round pick on Kyle Trask just so he can be our QB3.

That is just plain old stupidity…

  15. Duane Says:

Just keeping his options open. This is “lying season”.

  16. Dooley Says:

I mean, why would Bowles say anything more when he’s watched Trask sit behind +30 years of NFL experience between Gabbert & Brady the last two seasons? Not necessarily an endorsement, but not necessarily a “no way” either as Trask at the moment is the only Bucs QB to talk about.

  17. Dooley Says:

Derek Carr is closing on a contract with the damn dirty ‘Aints, booooooooo!!!

  18. pepsi Says:

“Todd Bowles: Kyle Trask May Be Ready For A No. 1 Quarterback Role” – is there anything less inaccurate about my headline vs yours when we both take Bowles out of context?
Pepsi, your proposed headline being accurate takes nothing away from Joe’s being accurate. However, yours would be old news. Joe’s is a take from Bowles that is different and clashing somewhat with what he’s implied previously. –Joe

  19. Bojim Says:

Pretty sure he’d rather not start Trask.

  20. Stevek Says:

Good for Bucs if Carr goes to NO. We will win and make him cry.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Whether Trask is a #1, 2 or 3 would depend on who else is signed…..

I don’t read anything into Bowles statements because Bowles has no idea of what he’s doing as far as QBs are concerned.

  23. SB~LV Says:

  28. sasquatch Says:

    Miss Leading. Sorry Joe.

  29. Steven007 Says:

Though there were no quotes around it, the title of the post clearly implied that the coach said this directly. When you read what he actually said it was typical word salad coach speak given to the media. I understand the story, but it’s a non-issue regarding what will happen at quarterback here.

  30. sasquatch Says:

^ Exactly. It was coachspeak about earning it on the field.
Coachspeak to one person is not coachspeak to another. It is the kind of thing a coach typically would say about draft pick not a third-year player. Hence, Joe wrote about it from that perspective. The headline leads readers directly to what Joe is writing about. It’s not misleading at all. –Joe

  31. BucBoy Says:

No need to mispresent Joe here. There are many other forums in which to engage in that activity. –Thank you.

  32. Tye Says:

This part of the season just can’t pass fast enough!

The Bucs being linked to every bobo QB from Anthony Richardson to Geno Smith..
I guess if these sites link the Bucs to EVERY qb available, when the time comes, they can claim they got it right… SMH!

  33. Mike Johnson Says:

here is the real bottom line..Our Bucs will pay dearly for our 2 yrs of success. Probably in 3 yrs we will be back to being truly competitive. Like the 1st commenter says here, we are paying 34 mil for Brady’s retirement. So grab some wood fellow plank walkers. we got some rough seas ahead. And you can take that to the bank.

  34. Pewter Power Says:

Yep like I said Bowles wasn’t head coach when he was drafted, he’s not endorsing this guy and drafting a quarterback is just smart. Bowles failed with Brady under center, him go with an unproven guy with zero starts? If not for Brady heroics we wouldn’t have made the playoffs at all

  35. Craig Says:

I don’t know what the Bucs were doing with Trask for the past two years. He was supposed to be getting schooled to make a try at being QB, but it looks like they just kept sending him for coffee.

Then again, it might be that the Bowles cleaner has no idea of a franchise QB looks like, his days with the Jets seem to point that way.

    We will find out someday.

  36. JD Still Says:

The quarterback whisperer, Bruce Arians, say the Bucs are in good hands with Kyle Trask and with his long record of evaluating pro bowl quality QB’s, I believe I will go with his evaluation.

  37. BucBoy Says:

[If you have video proof that Todd Bowles *didn’t* say this on CBS Sports, then let’s see it. Joe has seen the video. And Bowles did say this. Perhaps the problem is Bowles didn’t crown your blowup doll as the Day 1 starter. — Joe]

  38. JonCtn90 Says:

So how can you sat “he may not be for a #2 QB roll” when you have no idea what other QB will be on the team. They may bring in a rookie and a scrub or do something crazy and get a good FA QB. At this point no one knows.

  39. D-Rok Says:

    When Joe says,

  42. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I can hear the late great Chris Thomas saying, If you think Trask is the answer, I’m not sure you understand the question.

  43. BucBoy Says:

You are maliciously attempting to misrepresent Joe. This is why you are not getting through. Bowles is not in quotes in the headline but his message is not being misrepresented. Quotes in the headline would be exact quotes. The quote is in the story. His quotes and overall message were represented in the story. There’s nothing unclear here unless you want there to be. –Joe

  44. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘“He just needs reps and everybody needs to see him to see exactly what he is, whether he’s a [No.] 1, a [No.] 2 or a [No.] 3,” Bowles said of Trask.’

Don’t understand I guess why everyone, media included, doesn’t just take what Todd Bowles said at face value and stop reading into it.

In Trask we have a QB who’s never really taken any meaningful reps in a NFL game. Thus … ‘he just needs reps’ for everyone (coaches, fans & media) to figure out what we’ve REALLY got in Kyle Trask. It’s not that hard. Just another ‘mountain meet molehill’ moment.

  45. BucU Says:

If Trask isn’t the starter this year then that’s a damning indictment of Jason Licht picking him with a 2nd rd pick.

  46. Stevek Says:

    Lmao Joe!

Can Trask at least get some respect to his name, by using the nickname “America’s blow up doll”?

Not as good as “America’s turnover machine, ATM, 30/30” but I like it.

    Go Bucs. Go Trask!

  47. Stormy Says:

Nothing wrong here. And it does speak volumes. Whether the Trask fanboys want to admit it, he’s done absolutely nothing to deserve being “crowned the day 1 starter’.

Bring in honest competition and let the best man win it in preseason. And for you Trask fanboys that is not Drew Lock. Someone who has demonstrated they look like they belong as a starter like Brissett or Mayfield.

Competition is not bringing in a bunch of camp meat and calling it a day. That’s just like a group of women bringing their ugly friend along to make themselves look better.

  48. Defense Rules Says:

D-Rok … ‘“Mr. D-Rok, just what kind of site are you on?”

Amazing D-Rok, my wife has asked me the same question several times now. I just tell her that it amuses me.

Of course, her retort is always ‘You amuse easily, don’t you’. Aahh yes, she knows me so well.

  49. Joe Says:

Can Trask at least get some respect to his name

    Respect is earned, not awarded.

  50. Stormy Says:

And if Bowles is smart, if – as he claims – you can’t tell if he’s a #1 or a #3, he’d need to have his head examined if he didn’t bring in a legitimate qb with successful starting experience.

  51. Buccos Says:

Trask will be your day one starter. He rode the pine at Florida for a couple of years as well. He is a slow starter but a great finisher

I’m fine with what Bowles said. It was a harmless, utterly meaningless statement. I have a problem with decontextualizing his statement and spinning it to suit a narrative Joe wants to push. There is no narrative. Sorry you don’t seem to like what Bowles said. Joe has written 40 or so times how bullish the Bucs organization is on Trask, from Arians to Lavonte David to Jason Licht, etc. The context is here. What Bowles said is unusual speech regarding a third-year player that got lots of training camp reps last season and played a little in Week 18. –Joe

  55. Infomeplease Says:

Looks like the Bucs will draft a qb for sure!! And perhaps bring back Blaine Gabbert. I sure hope TB12 has worn off on to them somewhat.:)

  56. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Hey Red Pen. Put down the haterade. You’re drowning in it.

You don’t draft a Heisman finalist to be the next successor just to give up on him before you even give him the opportunity.

You noles fanboys got Jameis. It didn’t workout. Be a team player and show an iota of optimism.

  57. Redeemer Says:

Can we stop with this nonsense. The NFL is a competition based league. They don’t hand over backup duties lightly. It’s always a competition and Trask couldn’t beat out Gabby. The kids confidence is probably shot. Bowles will be trying to save his job, so nobody will be handed qb1.

  60. Stevek Says:

Love the poker game. I hope the QB we drafted in the second round two years ago is ready for his shot. Of course it’s going to be earned, and hopefully we land a franchise signal caller.

  61. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Mark it’s a great day for the haters then huh?

The reality is there is no cap space for the QB room. They have to give this kid his shot.

  62. Stevek Says:

Part of me hopes Trask lights up the NFC S, just so the FSU Honks, Jameis Apologists, and Freemanites can all squirm in their seats’ on Sundays when Trask is balling. Then, We will see what nickname Joe can christen the kid with?

  63. Buc4evr Says:

I can see why Bowles is non committal with Trask. There were reports that after two years he still hasn’t learned the offense and he has not had much in the way of game time reps. He didn’t do enough last season to beat Gabbert out.

Big unknown and he is not going to be handed the starting position. He has to beat out Jaymiss first. Lol.

  64. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Stevek nobody should expect Trask to make the pro bowl. Hopefully we see enough good things to see him retain the job and flow continuity into the following season.

  65. D-Rok Says:

    LOL @ Defense Rules!

I amuse easily, also. In fact, I’m currently chuckling, chortling, and harumphing while watching Mel Brooks’ latest release, History of the World Part II. It only took 40 YEARS for Part II to come out, and just in time – Brooks is now 96 years old.
I can never get enough of Brooks and his satire, and I model many of my silly comments on this here site channeling my inner Mel. His Blazing Saddles jam is one of the best movies ever made.

Sorry for the off-topic reply! Now what were we talking ’bout, Willis? Oh yeah, fooseball.

  66. Capt.Tim Says:

The Bucs need to sign 3 QB’s, so that Trask could be in his proper spot at 4th string.
    Nuff said

  67. sasquatch Says:

Joe doesn’t even realize he’s spinning a narrative out of a meaningless statement from Bowles.

That said, I don’t disagree that we don’t really know much about Trask. Is he more than a #3? Bowles statement only meant that the depth chart will sort itself out.

I know Joe has a question about why Trask couldn’t even beat out Gabbert for #2. That’s not an unreasonable suspicion.

  68. Shak Says:

So, they haven’t seen him play much and wonder what stage he is at, just like ALL of us, and THIS deserved its own “hype” thread? Saying he’s a 3rd year without context is weird. This is what people sit on? This is literally what everyone and their mother has said, including JL, many times. No one knows.

Danny Wuerffel, 3600 yards (back when that was a lot), 39 TDs (back when that was insane), wins the national championship, out of the SEC! Of course those cupcake rainbow college passes work in the NFL! Anyone who says he isn’t going to be a first ballot HOF’er is an idiot.

  70. Rod Munch Says:

I think it’s pretty obvious that Bowles doesn’t want his career in the hands of Trask, and I don’t blame him. Maybe Trask turns out to be good, but there’s been zero evidence of that so far, and Bowles knows he’s on the hot seat. Bowles is an ultra-conservative boring dullard and wants a super safe game manager QB, and no one knows what Trask is yet.

With that said, what I’ve said all along, is just play Trask and lets see what happens. I assume it’s going to blow-up biggly and result in the Bucs having the #1 pick in 2024 and Bowles and all his coaches getting fired, and it seems like Bowles believes the same thing.

I think it’s pretty obvious that Bowles doesn’t want his career in the hands of Trask, and I don’t blame him.

It’s only obvious in the sense that no coach wants his career in the hands of any one particular player, even if they’re named Brady, Manning, Mahomes, etc…

What is actually obvious, the only thing that’s actually obvious, is that Trask will have to compete for the job. He’s not going to have it handed to him. If he wins the job and plays well, I have no doubt Bowles would be happy to ride with him.

Why would any coach want to put his butt on the line for an unproven QB who hasn’t ever started an NFL game? You only do it if it’s earned.

I’m not a Trask lover or hater. I wasn’t that excited about him when we drafted him because his physical traits said “nothing special”… But he had sick stats at UF. The opinions are all over the place on here. You have @ButtBoy who has Trask’s manchowder dripping out the side of his mouth, and then you have the usual “negative because we love to be as$h0les” boobs who think they can see the future and it always sucks. The only thing we know is that he hasn’t proven anything in the NFL and it’s not clear if he can become a decent starter. That’s it.

  73. Oneilbuc Says:

I hope the bucs cut Trask so next year some of yall will get what you want. That means this season will be a waste of time watching so us bucs fans might as well shouldn’t wash no games this year. And next year when Evans, Godwin and we have to hope Winfield JR don’t price him out of the bucs on purpose just to leave. And next year yall can get the quarterback Williams or May and they won’t have no one to throw to wich means they are going to suck in 2024 wich means it will be another bad season and the next year most of yall will turn on them just like the rest of the quarterbacks the bucs drafted . And we will suck for the next 10 years. That’s what tanking does for the bucs set us back 10 years and that’s why we are the worst franchise in the history of the NFL because of some our fans believe in tanking. Have fun with that!!!

Joe can’t see that neither headline is accurate.

Uh, no, I completely disagree with that. I think Bowles would be ecstatic to have Brady or Manning or Mahomes. He doesn’t want to put his future into the hands of Trask because no one knows what he is going to be, and so far, with 2-years of seeing him in practice, it’s pretty obvious that Bowles doesn’t think Trask is Brady or Manning or Mahomes (and in fairness, there are very few of those guys).

Again, I’ve said all along just go with Trask, let him play, and let’s see if he sinks or swims. I’m 99% certain he’s going to sink, but I’ll be ecstatic if I’m wrong, if the Bucs got their QB of the future.

and so far, with 2-years of seeing him in practice, it’s pretty obvious that Bowles doesn’t think Trask is Brady or Manning or Mahomes (and in fairness, there are very few of those guys).

Well, yeah, of course he’s not one of them.

I’m not for the sink or swim. If Bowles doesn’t trust that Trask can get the job done, they should be finding someone who gives them a better chance. I don’t think he deserves the chance just because he was a 2nd round pick. If he gets the starting gig, I hope it’s earned and not just because they had no better choice.

  81. Rod Munch Says:

sasquatch – I’m for sink or swim because I want the team to take this season and fix their cap. Signing some jobber like Mayfield for $15m, which puts all the cap hit on next years team, just to go 5-12 … what’s the point? Just keep Trask as the starter and go 3-14 and get that #1 pick in 2024.

BUT, if I’m wrong, if Trask shows promise, then you got a QB for the future.

    It’s a win/win as far as I’m concerned.

Of course Bowles doesn’t think that since it’s him that gets the boot at the end of the season. But that is going to happen regardless of what he does, and some goober like Jimmy G or Brissett isn’t going change things – other than eating up future cap space since any deal the Bucs sign with one of these guys this year, will push off most of the cap hit until next year.

  82. Rand Says:

I think Joe has a tendency to be very mean spirited to his readers.

I’m not in favor of a fat QB contract for anybody right now, nor am I for sink or swim with Trask. I think you could bring in an inexpensive guy who could be a competent starter if Trask appears to be sinking. Jacoby Brissett is cheap and competent. Drew Lock is cheap and while he’s not great, he’s started in the league and knows the system Canales will install. I’d be in favor of either of those over sinking with Trask. That’s not to say I’m sure that Trask will sink. They need to find out — bring in a competent, inexpensive QB with starting experience to push him and start if he fails.

Bowles is going to make him earn it. I actually like that.

On the one hand just because a person is a “defensive minded” coach does not mean the guy knows nothing about the offensive side of the ball. No one rises to responsibility as a head coach in the NFL without a lot of football experience. On the other hand Tony Dungy had a heck of a time finding a good offensive coordinator and his quarterback. Long time fans will recall how Malcolm Glazer jettisoned Dungy and brought in Jon Gruden to put the franchise over the top while the Super Bowl window was still wide open.

Bowles tenure as our head coach could rest on a similar track record. We should know what we have at QB and OC by the end of December.

    Go Bucs!

Joe, Joe, Joe…….Always twisting information to fit your own narrative! I read your posts trying to get reliable information. Don’t let your dislike for Trask effect how you report information. If I want twisted narratives I can get that from the cable news channels. Be better please!

  88. steele Says:

This says as much about Bowles as it does about Trask. Bowles has no clue, and he is not a genius at misdirection. Clearly Trask has not done enough in two years to give anyone the confidence to say very plainly that he is the starter. Period.

  89. JD Still Says:

Joe , you might or might not, go to heaven, we can speculate ,but We won’t know for sure until you stand in judgement , kind of like Kyle Trask as a starting Quarterback in the NFL.

  90. garro Says:

Come on people! Think about all the BS statements Bowles has made about other things! Like Goedeke is fine, Lenny’s weight is fine, Devon is playing well, and Byron is doing a good job. No credibility with me anymore.

    Another nothing burger from Joe.
