Lavonte David No. 21

February 3rd, 2023

Very tough decision.

Joe’s favorite Bucs player for the past decade is easily Lavonte David. Maybe one reason is the guy is probably the most underrated linebacker since he came into the league in 2012.

Maybe because he played for so many garbage teams and was stuck on so many horrific defenses, or perhaps David is such a chill, laid back if not quiet guy that he was so overlooked for so long.

One guy didn’t overlook him: Tom Brady.

When the Bucs held their Super Bowl ring ceremony, Brady spoke and he pointed out when he had choices of where to go he studied the roster and admitted David’s presence helped him choose the Bucs.

“Lavonte, I knew what you were all about,” Brady said.

And now, David is in the twilight of his career. He’s 33, which is way old for an inside linebacker. Still, Matt Bowen of BSPN types that David is still valuable and he has David listed as his No. 21 overall free agent.

David will turn 33 this offseason, but I’m still seeing a savvy, urgent player on tape. He is well schooled as a zone defender, dropping to depth to impact throwing lanes, and he still has the pursuit speed to track ball carriers. And we know he can find rush lanes to daylight as a blitzer, tallying 29 sacks in his career. He had 80 solo tackles, five pass breakups and three sacks this season. David, who has made nearly $79 million in his career since being drafted in Round 2 by the Bucs in 2012, can still be productive in 2023.

Joe is really torn. The question about re-signing David is similar to quarterback. Do the Bucs want to try to make another run with a veteran free agent or do they draft a rookie, or do they #CollaspseForCaleb?

If the Bucs draft a quarterback or tank to draft one next year, there is no reason to keep David, as much as it pains Joe to type that. And if looking at the future and not the present, Joe would rather use that cash on keeping Jamel Dean rather than David.

David should be up in the Ring of Honor someday. And if the Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors have any decency, David will someday have a bust in Canton.

    Agreed.

  2. Mord Says:

I agree re: Canton as well. but man, he’s been overlooked with other such honors, hasn’t he?

  3. mark2001 Says:

So the question is, does he finish his career here in relative obscurity, or does he go somewhere else where his talents might shine on the national stage? I don’t know.

  4. AL121976 Says:

I think it would be classy to let him decide

  5. Jack Clark Says:

If the Bucs have any decency they’ll let Levonte David win another Super Bowl somewhere else because God knows this team is not a Super Bowl contender without Tom Brady

  6. Redeemer Says:

Pains me, but let him go. Hopefully LD signs a one year deal with a contender. In my book he’s a hall of famer. Go win another ring and thanks for a wonderful, yet largely wasted career here. It’s the story of the franchise. Lots of great players who never had a chance to reach their full potential as winners.

  7. Dooley Says:

Been watching David play football since the Pelini Bros days at Nebraska, Suh was his teammate and both played a HUGE part in the OG black shirts being brought back to Lincoln, NE. That said, don’t let him leave FL this late in his career also 100% plausible to make him the 1st/only active Buc inducted into the ring of honor. A player Bucs great future Bucs players in 10-15 years can look back and emulate on or off the field

  8. Defense Rules Says:

We all love LVD, but that’s not really the point. The Bucs created this salary CAP mess (we can’t blame it on anyone but ourselves) & there are so many ways to resolve it. And unfortunately it starts with our free agents. Re-signing the ones who represent ‘the future’ and are reasonably priced has to be the priority.

That won’t be LVD using either criteria. If he met just one of those 2 criteria I’d say go for it, but Lavonte’s 33. And we all know from 2 years ago that he’s not gonna work for peanuts (his last 2-year contract cost $25 mil). Like you yourself wrote Joe, when it comes to a choice between re-signing Dean & re-signing LVD, it’s not that hard a choice.

  9. ElioT Says:

    PFF has David at #6

  10. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Joe

You also have to consider LVD is owed $8M in dead cap space…

So if the Bucs re-sign LVD to another 2 year deal they can continue pushing that $8M down the road until 2025.

Plus – they can keep their starting ILB who is still playing at a pretty high level and is a Tampa legacy player.

I guess we also have to consider what is LVD’s value? Will he want $10M a year? $12M?

  11. John Says:

Man I hear a lot of crybaby bs. We need to throw trask in the fire with the best constructed team we can get. We need to know. It’s exciting. What if? What if this dude picked up a few things. What if this dude gets some real action and this kid balls out? This division is wide open. Why couldn’t a trask led Bucs team win? We’ve invested the time. Time to see what this kids gonna do. 2023 trask for me.

  12. WillieG Says:

It would be really nice if the NFL would realize that some players mean a lot to their teams and their fans and come up with a “Retiring Star” type program. Something like, if a player plays 7 years for a team, and agrees to retire within 5 years, only a percentage of his salary counts against the cap based on playing time. This way, the star player can continue to play, even as a part time player, because his salary is a lot less. Great for fans. Great for star players who want to retire with the team. And great for younger players who can learn and split time with the star as they do so.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Well, all of this depends on David as well. Does he want to come back to a team that is almost certainly going to be one of the worst in the league, or does he want to follow Suh’s example, and perhaps go win another SB. Personally, I hope he goes and wins another SB and cements himself as a 1st ballot HOFer.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I hate it but we have to let LVD walk…..and….FYI we don’t have a choice where he goes….he does.
We have to get younger……if the choice is David or Dean…..I select Dean…..

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

LVD gave us all hope when there was none as Bucs Fans during the lost decade and he was really the only true constant in this Franchise since Derrick Brooks on defense…..he truly is a class act.

I see LVD playing somewhere next year to earn his last big pay check. Times have changed and even thought it’ll be hard seeing him wearing another teams Jersey next year, we all know he is Truly a Buc

……just like we all know Tom Brady is Truly a Patriot.

  16. HC Grover Says:

We could get a good trade for him.

  17. bucfan34 Says:

LVD may be one of the most underrated players of all time. Holy crap!!

  18. Dick LeBeau Jr. Says:

Sad that the majority of you are of the mind frame that in a weak NFC south division we’re doomed and can’t compete. Even with a competent QB and fixing some of the holes, we can be competitive. I’m sure the owners have no interest in not being competitive after these last few years.

You play this game to be competitive, so why are we getting rid of good players to suck for no reason? Keep your core, fix the holes, and go win some games. To be okay with losing for a QB is not good fandom. Resign who you can and for once, do good by a player and let them retire and play their last game as a Buc.

  19. Bucanero Says:

You offer him a team friendly deal 100% guaranteed, put the ball on his court and let him choose if he wants to retire a Buc or go for a bag of money elsewhere. In any case much respect for Lavonte whose actions speak louder than his mouth.

  20. SB~LV Says:

    Love the guy !
Let him go and play for a better team next year, he’ll always be a Buccaneer after he retires.
    It’s 2023 NFL
and the Bucs are in for a HISTORICAL RENOVATION in the coming years. Need to aggressively draft a couple of QB’s each year until we have one like we watched in the Playoffs!

  21. gotbbucs Says:

Offer him a fair deal and let him shop. I want him back, but it should make sense for both sides. Off ball linebackers shouldn’t cost a fortune.

  22. Redeemer Says:

Willie G, you’re talking Bird rights in the NBA. I’m all for it. Make an exception for guys that allow retention. IDK something like his base salary not counti

    ———-

I’d assume so, however I don’t know if void years impacts that or not. But it’s a good question, now that you bring it up, I’ll have to go search that out.

But this is another good reason to just tank this year. If we lose SMB and Dean and David, and they sign big deals (even 1 year deals) the Bucs could get some picks out of it — SO long as the Bucs don’t sign a bunch of guys.

  27. BillyBucco Says:

    Gotta let him go.
Like Wagner, he will decide to retire or chase another Championship.
Not sure David can win one sweeter than with Brady.
We can’t afford even 8Mill for David.

We gotta get younger, not hold onto Old Dreams of Relevance.
The quicker we move on, the shorter the Den of Depression years.

We needed someone with balls to cut Hargreaves.
We needed someone with balls to call out Winston and chase Brady.
We needed someone with balls to understand the O Line earlier this year.

Now we need someone with Balls to look to the future and not hold onto even one glimpse of past SBs

  28. snookman Says:

This is what seperates the good GM’s and Owners from the rest.

We made a superbowl run, and now we are going to have to come to the reality that this team is on the back-end of a successfull run. Hopefully this organization learned from 2002.

Facts are Facts………..we aren’t winning a superbowl in the next 5 years with this team. We need to keep the young core: Devin White, Triston Wirfs, Godwin, Vita Vea, Carlton Davis etc… THe aging Vets who are still productive need to be traded for value and cap space or go into FA. We need to Rebuild this team around the good young core players and have a long term plan.

We got to get the QB right as priortiy number one. We need to get the offensive line line right.

Its ok to restart ……………look at the lightning how they developed their legacy.

  29. Andrew Fish Says:

sometimes its not about cap or rebuild or any of that. David should be a buc for life no matter what. If he wants to play here make it work. lets not do what we did with brooks at the end of his career.

  30. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Reasons I’d re-sign David:

    1) He’s still good.
    2) I don’t believe in tanking, what example does that set?
    3) Devin White hasn’t been good without him.
    4) I’d hate to see him in a different uniform.

  31. sasquatch Says:

Yet another article where J03 trolls the sane people with his #CollapseCrap.

  32. sasquatch Says:

    Loser organizations tank.

Loser organizations let franchise icons walk when they’re still playing well. You don’t let David get out of the building. Hell to the no.

  33. Delusional Intelligence Says:

If I was a betting man, I would put money on either him remaining a Buc or going to Miami, even with the AFC cold weather games.

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

Some players need to be kept. David is that guy. I’ll personally come puke on the steps of the Den of Cremation if LVD is not re-signed.

  35. Goatfarmer Says:

Maybe we need to get rid of Diva to keep him. LVD can’t like the hollow bravado of the horsey blowhard.

  36. Show Me the TDs Says:

Keep David. Get rid of the narcissis White. Draft an eager, young stud to learn from David.

  37. Ed Says:

White doesn’t show the professionalism that David has. He gets blown up with straight up blocking and his speed is only good when there are open lanes for him to burst through. I don’t see the toughness or the intelligence that a top 10 middle linebacker has. A blitzing team that wants to make him an edge rusher may want him. If he can be traded for a 3rd rounder and a player, I’d make that trade.

I would try and keep LVD, he’s likeable and still productive, a hell of a lot more than White is. If he’ll take a discount or if he tells Licht he wants to sunset somewhere other than Tampa, give him what he wants. If anyone on the Bucs has earned respect, its LVD. Only Derrick Brooks and Hardy Nickerson were better Buc LB’s.

  38. Crickett Baker Says:

If any team is playing to lose it is a travesty, imo. LVD has a 1 in 31 chance of finding another team that will win a SB with him. He and Mike have played through many lean years and were always trying to win. There is way too much negativity on here, and a lot of censoring of posts these days. It almost looked like last year the Bucs were trying to lose. Can you think of another season worse than that one? Wherein the games were hard to even watch?

  39. mark2001 Says:

1 in 31 cricket? Really. I think there are a few teams… RC, Cincy, Buffalo, San Fran, that have pretty good chances of showcasing LD’s talents. It isn’t like all have even chances. That is like saying an old milk wagon nag has the same chance to win the Kentucky Derby as a thoroughbred. It just isn’t so.

  40. mark2001 Says:

    KC of course.

  41. Sinking Ship Says:

I love Lavonte, but he will not be a HOFer. Too tough a sled on defense and playing in Tampa doesn’t do him any favors. It is becoming like the Heisman to a degree.

  42. Gtampa Says:

    Blasphemer!!!

  43. Davenport Says:

Its time to cut everyone loose.
Management gave up on 2023 when they didn’t fire Bowles.

As fans, we understand that we have to pay the price. Anything else is just throwing good money after bad.

  44. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with the comment that David should be free to go or do whatever he wants. He’s earned that and he could help some really good teams that were only a win or two away and a Referee scamming. NFL Officials are so corrupt and Goodell is the one overseeing and probably sanctioning their crooked one sided behavior. Refs are ruining the NFL. Goodell needs to go!!!

  45. Letsbucinggo Says:

Trade White for a second rounder sign David to a team friendly contract and draft a mlb.

  46. Joe in Michigan Says:

BigMacAttack: The NFL is an entertainment industry. They often pick and choose who wins and loses. For instance, I thought it might be the Bucs year to win the Super Bowl when they called a hold on Brandon Scherff of Washington late in the 1st playoff game that definitely was not a hold (I don’t remember what the play was, I think it was for a fairly long gain).
Is the NFL rigged? Somewhat. They usually want the bigger market team to win (see non PI call, Rams vs. Saints that one year). This year (IMHO), it was the 2 black starting QB angle (I’m black myself). Don’t get me wrong, KC is good, but the Bengals might’ve got hosed…Which I was okay with because of how much the Bengals were running their mouths.

  47. stpetebucfan Says:

@Crickett Baker “If any team is playing to lose it is a travesty, imo.”

Agree 100%. If any team plays to lose they are LITERALLY by definition LOSERS!
Once you cop to being a LOSER it’s hard to shake the image!

@Dick LeBeau Jr. I like the way you and Crickett roll. Damn the freaking torpedoes and full speed ahead! Can’t win them all but the Bucs sure could TRY!

BTW Jr great choice of handle. I’m old enough to actually have watched him play and he was awesome!

  48. Geno711 Says:

    Joe,inMichigan.

I felt like the playoffs have overall been fair. I think there seems to be more media coverage this year on alleged fixed games.

Maybe you have voiced that in the past here and there.

I am just not sure why the increases discourse this year.

I feel comfortable about the KC v Cincy game.

  49. 1#bucsfan Says:

KEEP HIM only if he wants to be here. I get it. Wrong side of 30 , expensive but idc. He’s deff one of my favorites along with John lynch n DB55. would hate to see him leave. It’s a Buisness n a young man’s game. Deff be a sad day when he leaves more sad for me then when TB12 retired for the 2nd time lol

  50. Defense Rules Says:

Tough decision no matter how you approach it. LVD was tied with White in tackles (124) last season to lead the team by far, and got 3 sacks (as many as Shaq did). He played in all 17 games so he’s still durable. He’s a quiet leader, but he’s a leader nonetheless.

Big problem will be his asking price. Clearly his $12.5 mil last year salary is way too much given our salary CAP situation, and could keep us from being able to re-sign several other players (who we quite frankly need).

Maybe a reasonable approach is what a couple have suggested, to make a team-friendly offer for say 2 years & then let LVD decide. To me a team-friendly offer would probably be around $6 mil per year for 2 years, all guaranteed. That’d almost surely let LVD retire as a Buc (he’d be 35 when it ended) & it lets him make the choice.

  51. Defense Rules Says:

For those talking about trading or releasing Devin White, a few figures to consider … besides the fact that he led the Bucs in tackles in 2022 (124 tackles), 2021 (128), and 2020 (140). He’s also given us (in his 4 years) 20.5 sacks, 55 QB hits, 35 TFLs and averaged 993 defensive snaps per year. That’s pretty good performance & availability actually for a MLB.

Question becomes: is he worth what he seems to think he’s worth? Devin will be making $11 mil this year (5th year). Some comparison salaries for NFL’s highest paid linebackers (average salary per year):

    1. Colts linebacker Darius Leonard: $19.7 million

    2. 49ers linebacker Fred Warner: $19 million

    3. Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley: $17 million

    4. Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun: $15 million

    5. Falcons linebacker Deion Jones: $14.25 million

    6. Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson: $13.54 million

    7. Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker: $12.5 million

    8. Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David: $12.5 million

    9. Titans linebacker Zach Cunningham: $11 million

  52. David Says:

I think he wants to retire a Buccaneer. I don’t think they would have to pay top dollar to retain him. He looked better this year than last year. I would keep him and let him retire as a Buc in 2 years and still draft another linebacker.

  53. Jack Clark Says:

Joe allows some of my posts when I blatantly disagree with him

    That makes me respect Him

  56. Winky Says:

    Every team needs its leaders.

If you go bare bones reset, there’s not enough firm ground. It’s a lot to put on rookies and newer players without some vets to learn from.

We’ve seen that before. We want a measured house cleaning, imo. Not a gut job.

    GO BUCS!!!

  57. TDTB Says:

Sign David, sign cheaper of two CB’s, move white to OLB, draft/sign/trade for quality CB, Safety and DL.

  58. DCBUCSFAN Says:

was it Jeno Hayes that had that number last ? a true class act and not to mention better stats than fathers Kueckley ( misspelled) and B Wagner ( seahawks) ..Isnt that a borderline HOF career number with a SP RING? just look at the numbers..

  59. Bucs Guy Says:

I think the decision on LVD is based on the decision on Devin White. Move White to OLB or trade him? If you do either of these, you have to keep LVD for at least a year and draft an ILB.
If Bowles is dumb enough to keep White at ILB then the Bucs won’t re-sign LVD.

  60. RustyRhinos Says:

LVD will stay if he wants and leave if he wants it is ultimately his choice. Be a sad day to see him play someplace else. But the NFL is a business at the end of the day. I hope he stays but we do not need to keep kicking the cap can down the road. Bite the bullet and “take the pain” this season, we already have enough cap cans kicked past 23.

What is this indoctrination of “CollapseForCaleb” in nearly every post? What happens if we do “CollapseForCaleb” and he gets here and sux arse? Will we hear how it is the culture, the coaching, or the GM’s drafting? I would never “Collapse” for any player, that is for quitters. Gear up Man up and do your best to beat the guy in front of you. Let the results be what they are.

  63. Patrick Says:

I read all your opinions, and try to reason. First time posting here. Not sure what a good good portion are watching, and I do feel you, when it comes to loyal. With that said… I’m a season ticket holder, in the bleeds, on the 43 yard line. Our linebackers… couldn’t cover in the parking lot of the VA hospital, after operation day. That includes White, but David is now slow and terrible. He couldn’t cover Clint Eastwood. From our seats, we all saw it. I love David. But… he’s done. White can’t cover either. If he can’t improve, he should be jettisoned. Our d backs ..they all are serviceable and no more. Dean isn’t a starting corner. Bunting isn’t a starting corner, and injury prone. I read some of your posts about Davis bring a shutdown corner. That’s laughable. He unfortunately, is the best we got. Dean and Bunting should be kicked to the curb, on this rebuild, and don’t fool yourself… This is total rebuild time. Neither one of those guys are serviceable starters, corner or nickle. They are splash or trash players. If we are rebuilding, let’s let em walk, and bring in some upgrades. Again…it’s a 5 yr rebuild imo. Anyone thinking this is a going to be a 2 year reload, is delusional. I want Bowles gone. I have zero confidence that clown could coordinate a rebuild. He barely made the playoffs with a SB caliber roster. He sucks too. But let’s get back to my original thought. David is done. Dean and Bunting…well..they both are average at best. Might be nice wingman guys, but we have no one better. Send them packing. Send the rest packing (I saw our free agents…nothing there to write home about), let’s get out of cap hell, and start the build. And go Trask. I saw those posts, too. Trask is a stud. I’m a Gator fan. He has had ZERO op to do anything, really. He’s smart, has a cannon, and takes care of the ball. Not confident Bowles isn’t going to ruin him, because Bowles 8s NOT an NFL coach, but I think Trask saves his job, to all of our misfortune. That means we win 7 this year, get better via draft, then we win 9, in which we are stuck with that clown at the helm for 2 more years.

  64. JD Still Says:

True , he is not a spring chicken , but David is still performing at a relatively high level but his real value to the team is as a legacy player, if we draft a LB to learn from David and eventually replace him when he retires you want him there to pass on the Tampa Bay mindset to that young man and we should try to do it at as many positions as possible, you don’t want young men to get the idea that they are just there for the money and will tank their play to get traded for greener pastures when times get bad, mercenaries always leave when things get tough and in a career there will be some tough times , you want guys who will stick in the tough times and be there to help the team through them, that’s the mindset that you want to pass along.

  65. Patrick Says:

Just to clarify…on defense, we have Vea, Winfield, Barrett (recovered?), Tryon (jury still out, can he play?), White (same?), Davis. Edwards and a couple others..backup players. So…we need 5 on defense, at least. Offense… Smith is a turnstile or a hold in action, left guard is a liability, right guard is a giant question mark, and if I was Jensen, I would call it a day. So…4 of 5 o lineman need replacement/upgrade. Hainsey is decent, not Paul Gruber. Need some speed on the outside to compliment Evans and Godwin. Trash all that was bought in, and Miller sucks/splash or trash. There you go. Bring us at least 9 new starters in this draft, and we are good to go. Lol seriously. Dean, Bunting, David can hit the bricks. That will help a little, but with Brady contract, we are stuck in cap hell at least another year. Let’s not keep kicking David’s contract down the road. He truly gave us everything he had. Take the 8 mil hit this year, and move on.

  66. Patrick Says:

JD…what level? He makes tackles in front of him. He can’t cover anymore. It was terrible this year. Our LB coverage probably cost us 2 games this year, maybe more. Our offense was so bad. But, you couldn’t see it on TV, but in the stands from our vantage point, the prolonged drives, from the obvious ineptitude of our LBs ability to cover ANYTHING short of a screen pass to the RBs, was painful.

  67. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Bucs had the opportunity to draft a superior quality LB at their 1st Round spot last year in Devin Lloyd and traded back to get Logan Hall , who by all accounts was a non factor. Lloyd meanwhile had a great year in Jax and should have been here in Tampa grooming to replace Lavonte David. This upcoming draft better be a whole bunch better than last years , because the last draft was abyssmal when you consider the MVP of the draft was a punter.

  68. Patrick Says:

And “legacy player”….?. …we already have legacy players. Brooks, Alstott, Dunn, Lynch, Sapp, Gruber. Their names are spread all around the top ring of our stadium. Just depends on if you want this to be a 5 year rebuild, or a 15 year one like last time. Professional football is a business. If David wants to retire a Buc I’m down. If he wants to keep playing, I’m down too, but not here. He has nothing left. As much as I love him, I saw it last year. No reason to bring him back to the kick 9ff of a 5 year rebuild, with near future head coaching change.

  69. Patrick Says:

TB fan76… They did. Jason Licht has never drafted well, outside of the top 17 picks or so. The no brainers. But, I am very grateful he put the staff together that did the math wizardry on the cap the last few years, to keep us competitive and in the SB talk, and he brought in some quality free agents, panned out or not. I was never a big fan of his, but gotta give him props. At this point though, the battle has been fought. Time to gear up for a new battle. Hope I gave you some food for thought. Back into my recluse cocoon. Enjoy the off-season. Go Bolts! Go BUCS!

Ps TB fan…I LOVE Carmada! He’s probably the best punter in the league, and kept us in games we probably shouldn’t have been. We have a punter for a decade. Imagine how great that will be when we need him in a pinch to win, and not playing to not lose, like the horrible soon forgotten era of Todd Bowles will be. 🙂

  71. Bucamania Says:

David still has a couple good years left. I understand if Lavonte wants to finish his career on a winning team.

    Derrick Brooks 2.0

    #55 and #54.

    We are blessed Bucs fans.

    Blessed.

    Thank you Lavonte. For real.

He never took a play off.

    Even though we sucked.

He gave his all no matter what.

I hope he chases a ring.

If we can’t sign Aaron Rodgers or Carr, we should let him chase another ring.

  73. LoveMeSomeBucs Says:

I love reading all the negative doomsday posts from these so called Bucs fans. These folks wod have committed suicide during the Bucs 0-26 years. Everyone was all in when Brady came to town and won a Super Bowl and now because Brady is gone (thank God) the entire team is crap…according to the posters here. Jerry Jones has spent more money than anyone and he still can’t get it done…all these so called Bucs fans need to move back to New Yawk
