Is The Hiring Of Dave Canales A Package Deal?

February 16th, 2023

Connecting dots on free agent QB.

Joe strongly suspected that Bucs coach Todd Bowles, not wanting to be a lame-duck coach in 2023, would do his damnedest to lure a seasoned playoff quarterback to start for the Bucs in 2023.

First, Joe thought it was Derek Carr. Then Joe thought it was Jimmy GQ. Both were linked to the Bucs.

All the while there was another free agent playoff quarterback lurking out there that Joe was fully overlooking. Until this morning. With the hiring of Seattle quarterback coach Dave Canales to take over as the Bucs’ offensive coordinator, Joe quickly realized that the Seahawks have a playoff quarterback hitting free agency: Geno Smith.

The 32-year old veteran is coming off his best season. Smith led the NFL in completion percentage (69.8), throwing 30 touchdowns with 11 picks.

Smith, who is from Miramar, was Bowles’ backup quarterback with the Jets for two seasons and only started once for Bowles.

Of course, all the Seahawks have to do is tag Smith and that’s all she wrote. But given Smith’s connection to Canales, that his home state is Florida and his history with Bowles, this is smelling like too much to be a coincidence.

And Joe doesn’t believe in coincidences.

  1. Joe Swanson Says:

That would probably be the best scenario we could have at this point. I believe the hiring of Canales is a good move. The only issue is the cost for Geno Smith his salary and of course Seattle whether they resign him or tag and trade.

  2. acey Says:

Seattle does have a top 5 pick… maybe there is a chance they let Geno walk and go QB? 5 and 20 to the Bears to snipe Bryce from the Colts might be something they’re considering.

  3. Hodad Says:

Not excited about this hire, and certainly not exiced about the thought of rooting for Geno Smith. The lost decade is here.

  4. mg Says:

After seeing the game plans this moron bowles put out for TB-12 no seasoned QB worth a darn will be coming to Tampa

  5. Todd Says:

Great hire. GREAT HIRE! Sneaky good.

I have strong connections with the inner sanctum of the Seahawks…I have a friend who knows a Seattle Seahawks season ticket holder who once took a leak next to Gino Smith’s brother’s best friend at a game…who was RAVING about Canales pastries served at the stadium.

So now that I’ve established credibility that I know whateth I speaketh, “GREAT HIRE!!!”

Worried Layoff Lenny might get really fat, though. He LOVES him some Canales pastries!!!

  6. Joe in Michigan Says:

No to Geno Smith, maybe to his backup Drew Lock. Probably more in the Bucs price range.

  7. Sunken Ship Says:

Joe, sorry, this is garbage again. Please do better.

Geno sucks. I don’t care how he played last year. He has a career to show for it. The suggestion of this and other recent “hot takes” should be flushed like a hot steamer.

  8. Mike C Says:

Todd, it’s a bit early to be drinking…

  9. Dooley Says:

Hendon Hooker c’mon dooown *price is right theme play*

  10. Georger Says:

Sorry Joe you are reaching here, The Bucs didn’t hire Canals with the hopes of getting Smith. Seattle more than likely be resigned or franchised. If for some reason he is not resigned, there are many other clubs that could sign him. I was hoping for Johnson, the Eagles QB coach. We all ready have Trask on the roster. Makes more sense.

    __________

It’s never too early for a Bucs’ fan to start drinking.

  12. MadMax Says:

I never thought about it but yeah, I’ll take Geno….he’ll be a good bridge for Hooker!

  13. BucBoy Says:

Geno has a career TD:INT ratio of 64:48. Not good. Worse even than the interception maching himself, Jameis Winston, at 139:96.

  14. BucBoy Says:

Hendon Hooker is another “athletic” bust in the making.

  15. Todd Says:

    Mike C…

I’m married to a White Russian.

The mornings always begin with a White Russian. Or two or three.

My most creative time of the day! 😂

  16. Gbobucsfan Says:

No one moves the needle like Geno Smith.

  17. Mort Says:

That’s a resounding “Nope” from me

  18. Aceofaerospace Says:

Bowels reaching back to his Jets roots is all I need to hear. Fire Bowels.

  19. NEfan Says:

Why would Smith play for Blows when he wouldn’t play him in his prime? On season and Smith is the next coming? Good luck with that
If Geno wants to make money it won’t be on a Blows ground & pound offense. How have you Bucs fans survived this turmoil for so many seasons? I find it painful just reading about it.

  20. confido75 Says:

Bucs mgt signed this dude because of what he did with Geno. I fully believe they are going to roll the dice with Trask and just focus on getting the cap situation sorted. Its time to pay the piper for the Brady era.

  21. NYbucsfan Says:

Geno’s stats 28 wins and 34 losses. 64 passing TDs and 48 INTs. Let’s not be stupid; he is not a good QB. We don’t need to throw money away.

  22. Rand Says:

SMH ..Joe writes an article with sheer speculation and the crony nay-sayers automatically start blaming it on Bowles. Their reading comprehension leaves nothing to be desired.

  23. Mike C Says:

Nybuc, he had almost half of his career TDs last year, I think the arrow is pointing up for the guy, that said, fix the cap and roll with Trask.

  24. geno711 Says:

According to another source, it will be a 2-time super bowl champion quarterback that Licht, Bowles and the Bucs will sign as a free agent to be their starter.

    Geno’s stats 28 wins and 34 losses.

My stats are much better than that!

  26. Knucknbuc Says:

Joe unfortunately doesn’t know much about Seattle then or contracts. Seattle has already come out and said that they are going to resign geno and they want him back geno has said he wants to resign with Seattle. So they will most likely get it done. Sportrac rates genos next contact in between 25 and 35 million. Now knowing we have a qb next year that won’t be playing that we’re paying 35 million (Tom Brady) adding geno would on the low end be 60 million spend on qbs next year. Lol now if joe was really connecting dots he would of said genos backup drew lock is a free agent this year. And is highly likely to follow his qb coach for a chance to compete with an unknown quantity (Kyle trask) at around 5 or 6 million for a really really prime opportunity to start here.

  27. ShiverMeTimbers Says:

If we sign Geno Smith to some contract it will be Josh McCown 2.0. One fluke season with “connections to the coach”. Just ride it out with Trask (Glennon) see what you’ve got and don’t flush $$ down the toilet that could be used when this team is competitive again.

  28. Tye Says:

That would be the absolute CLEAREST sign of desperation!….
(Geno Smith… Really?) Back to the laughing stock of the league!

  29. Dylan Says:

This doesn’t mean there was automatically a connection between him and Smith. You said he didn’t call plays, it’s possible Smith barely interacted with the guy even though he was the QB coach. Maybe it’s a plan, but honestly this looks like we are gearing up for 2-15 season the #1 pick and a new coaching regime.

  30. sasquatch Says:

What part of 55 million over the cap isn’t registering here? We are not spending big on a QB this year. The Seahawks are going to re-sign Smith, most likely. Drew Lock might be an option.

  31. catcard202 Says:

Drew Lock on a 2yr/$7M deal to compete for QB1 is better than committing $25M+/yr to Geno, who’ll want 3yrs MIN.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

    NEfan Says:

” How have you Bucs fans survived this turmoil for so many seasons? I find it painful just reading about it.”

I don’t want you to go through anymore pain.

Why don’t you go find a Pats site to blog on now that Brady’s gone from Tampa?

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

Geno Smith >> Goobert or Trashk, that’s for sure. Pretty good mobility enables read option plays where the QB must be accounted for. Which opens up the quick passing game better. This might mean a 7 win season instead of a 2 win season. What kind of dollars he wants compared to the other free agents is a question.

  34. Proudbucsfan Says:

Geno Smith is a terrible human being borderline sociopath. 🤮

  35. Not Says:

This is the most absurd JBF post ever .
    Post Super Bowl carp !!
Bucs are not looking for a package deal with Smith.
Seahawks are going to resign smith .
Come on, how stupid do you think we are JBF ? Ridiculous leap. Canales is a nobody, nobody big is following him here .

  36. Joe Says:

Seahawks are going to resign smith .
Come on, how stupid do you think we are JBF ?

Did Joe not mention in the story all it takes is for the Seahawks to tag Geno Smith and he’s not leaving??? Helps to read the story.

  37. Bucs Orlando Says:

    Jeno is awful.

    Please no.

Gonna be a rough year of we don’t get Jimmy G or Carr. Those guys can spin the ball, Jenn had 1 decent year in Seattle. Don’t be fooled look at all his starts, he’s terrible.

  38. BucU Says:

Where’s Jack “The throwin Samoan” Thompson when we need him?

  39. WillieG Says:

Brady to Denver. Wilson to the Bucs.

  40. BucsfanFred Says:

I’d rather not bother with geno Smith. Can’t stand the guy. His own teammate broke his jaw because geno totally dissed him over 650 bucks. He thought he was untouchable, but he was very punchable.

  41. Buccos Says:

We would probably have to trade for Geno. I think he may be the best available option if we go veteran qb. I think it is unlikely that Seattle would let him go but if Licht can pull it off that would be cool. I wouldn’t give him $30mm though. I would want to see him back that season up first.

  42. Goatfarmer Says:

    Sapp is right.

The dumbest fans are internet Bucs fans. Can’t read, can’t process reality.

Many examples above, one being, a free agent is a FREE AGENT. No need to trade for a free agent .

    Please resume huffing the tailpipe.

  43. nick houllis Says:

geno had to go against rams d, sf d, twice a year last year. in the nfc south he will be the best qb on a team with above avg o line, very good WRs. of course with trask, well either be good or bad enough to draft a franchise qb for 2024. geno is good enough to go 8-9 again
