Hendon Hooker And The Bucs

February 5th, 2023

Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker.

So unless the Bucs decide to ride (and die) with Kyle Trask next season, or put their playoff hopes in the hands of a veteran quarterback, the Bucs will have to draft a quarterback.

Joe doesn’t think the Bucs are willing to mortgage the future for what it will cost to trade up from No. 19 to grab C.J. Stroud. The price would be prohibitive bordering on obscene.

But Jordan Reid of BSPN seems to think there is a middle ground where the Bucs can find a mature, vertical thrower without having to bleed to move up for Stroud.

That quarterback, Reid believes, is Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker.

Potential team fit: Tampa Bay Buccaneers. … … this fit makes a lot of sense for Hooker because of his maturity and the average age of the roster. It would be ideal for him to step into an environment with a roster built to contend as opposed to a rebuilding scenario. The Tampa Bay offense still has a set of vertical playmakers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, though it is still awaiting the hiring of an offensive coordinator.

This is an interesting fit. There is no doubt Hooker is a vertical thrower. And having reliable receivers like Evans and Godwin on board will help his development.

The trick for Joe is most of these Air Raid quarterbacks don’t pan out in the NFL, with the exception of Pat Mahomes. Have NFL offenses adjusted and adapted enough that Air Raid quarterbacks have a better shot now?

Hooker is a four-year starter at Virginia Tech and Tennessee, which means the Bill Parcells criteria measuring if a quarterback can transition from college to the NFL is favorable. So that’s good.

Hooker put up crazy numbers last year at Tennessee before he blew out his knee — 3,135 yards and 27 touchdowns with a 70 percent completion rate.

Now the bad news: Unless Reid has intel or Hooker is using the Chris Godwin method of rehab, Hooker blew out his knee in November. To expect him to start for the Bucs in September, well, Joe thinks that is wishful thinking.

I like this man. He is a good player. Mature. With the knee, where does he go in the draft?

  2. Nutterbutter95 Says:

Not a bad thing about the ACL… It means he might be available in the 2nd round. Grab a starter round 1, be patient and if he is still there in round 2, think about trading up for him

  3. VATom Says:

All depends on what Bowles and whomever they hire for OC want. Until an OC is hired who knows? Evans and Godwin can excel in a lot of different offenses. I dont see a preference for vertical. Otton, Evans, Godwin, White and Gage. I see them resigning Gabbert and sticking to what theyve done foundationally for the last few yrs, because Gabbert has been under Brady for 3 yrs, fine tuning. They have Trask if Gabbert crash and burns. The quality of the NFC South lets them kick the can on the QB and still be in a competitive spot. They are going to be able to get away with a lot to recover the cap and remain competitive in the Div, as long as the coaching doesnt suck…again. This team wont be making any deep runs.

  4. Hodad Says:

The Bucs have a roster that can contend right now? Contend for what Joe? If this kid was 100% healthy we wouldn’t be able to contend with him, let’s be real. We barely won our division with Brady at the helm last year. A rookie’s chances would be next to zero. Let’s not pretend winning the NFC south next year will be easy for the Bucs, because we have better talent. It’s just not true.

  5. Jeff Says:

“Hooker” Sounds perfect for the Yucs.

  6. HC Grover Says:

Looks good for the new Bucs. Even the uniform.

  7. Mickman Says:

Strong arm? I don’t see it. I see wr who have to wait on the ball.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

I see a lot of positives in Hooker on that highlight tape.

But… it IS a highlight tape – and the dude was throwing to wide-arse open receivers every game it appears.

Listed at 6-4, he’s got the height you like to see – the arm looks pretty strong – and he’s got some athleticism in those legs as well.

This young QB may well be worth considering depending on where they might be able to draft him.

  9. beano Says:

“So unless the Bucs decide to ride (and die) with Kyle Trask”

    Unbelievable. You are a disgrace.

  10. NYbucsfan Says:

I would be ok if we grabbed him late. He looks like a solid backup.

  11. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Pass on the next deshone Kizer don’t waste a draft pk

  12. Onetrickpony Says:

    Pass

  13. SB~LV Says:

We need to draft multiple QB’s

  14. geno711 Says:

Well, Mahomes is certainly the big exception but at least some other air raid QBs have had reasonable success such as:
    Kyler Murray and Jared Goff.

That is clearly a higher rate of success than Ohio State or University of Florida QBs.

I would say that two things that Hendon Hooker has over most other air raid QBs is a much higher completion rate and much stiffer college competition.

  15. Jon Says:

So Hooker can hit guys with blown coverage and 5 seconds to throw? Great. Jalin Hyatt is the only player that pops in these highlights.

  16. Bobby M. Says:

Licht should have been drafting young QBs since the day Brady arrived….even if they were 6th or 7th rd picks. That’s what well run organizations do because the pay off if you find one can change a franchise for a decade. Now we sit with Trask who we drafted in the 2nd rd and doesn’t seem capable of being a back up. Licht has wasted so many top picks and when he does hit, they end up hitting free agency vs us extending them because Licht stays jammed up against the cap. The Brady effect is gone, now we’ll see Licht’s performance which was 5 yrs of losing with Winston. He missed on Winston, missed on Trask….he’s shown no ability to find a QB. Licht is good at evaluating o-linemen, safeties, WRs and TEs. Players that change franchises are QBs and DEs. Best chance we have is trading for a vet with proven ability.

  17. ManzielMadness Says:

I think it depends on if TB wants to keep 2 or 3 QBs on the roster. Definitely see us signing at least one vet QB though.

  18. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Bucs will not draft a QB this year for TWO obvious reasons. 1. Trask deserves his shot , especially when Bucs have invested so much in him. 2. 2024 is hailed as possibly the BEST QB class in history.

  19. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

1ST OF ALL, I FEEL WE SHOULD TRADE FOR BAKER MAYFIELD, TRADE BLAINE GABBERT & POSSIBLY MOVE UP FOR FLORIDA’S ANTHONY RICHARDSON, KEEPING KYLE TRASK & LETTING ALL THREE BATTLE IT OUT IN TRAINING CAMP & THE PRE-SEASON FOR THE STARTING JOB…BAKER HAS THE FIRE & ATTITUDE THIS TEAM NEEDS AT THE POSITION, TRASK IS A VERY ACCURATE PASSER WHO JUST NEEDS A CHANCE TO PLAY (WEARING HIS #11 HE HAD AT FLORIDA, RICHARDSON IS MULTI-TALENTED WITH A STRONG ARM & FAST LEGS..ONE OF THESE THREE CAN SURELY LEAD OUR BUC’S TO THE PLAYOFFS IN 2023…

  20. View from 132 Says:

I like Hooker. Impressive prospect. If they believe Trask is the guy, other needs take priority. If not, I’m sure Hooker jerseys will sell well around here.

  21. kyle Says:

well im sure ronnie lane and the volunteer rednecks will love this article…haha

  22. beano Says:

JOE SAYS: “unless the Bucs decide to ride (and die) with Kyle Trask”

“Die” as in not be capable of winning a Super Bowl in 2023. –Joe

That’s despicable. You have no factual basis for saying that. I’m surprised that you – after pushing for the Bucs to draft BUST Johnny Manziel and then celebrating the Bucs drafting BUST Jameis Winston – think you are qualified to opine about any quarterback (or any player for that matter).

Indeed, why do you say things like that about Trask but about Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who has been given 2 full seasons of playing time and still sucks, you say “the jury is still out on him”? Does race factor into your calculations? Sure looks like it.

  23. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Hooker sounds like an intriguing choice. If the Bucs feel think he could be a starter in the league, it may be worth the risk to draft him. Hooker having a knee injury may not be a bad thing. The Bucs may be able to draft him with a discount, and he can sit and learn while his knee recovers. Trask could start the season. If he works out great. If not, Hooker can get a chance later in the season.

  24. Marine Buc Says:

If we can get him in the 2nd or 3rd round I would be OK with that pick.

This guy has some impressive credentials and 70 percent completions is impressive – especially playing in the SEC…

  25. Aceofaerospace Says:

Blown knee? No sooner that 5th round for me.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Would be a good 4th round pick…..(oops…we don’t have a 4th round pick)

Go with Trask…..maybe bring back Gabbert to back up…..draft a QB late….6th, 7th round or go with an UDFA.

If Trask doesn’t work out….24 is the year to draft a QB.

  27. HC Grover Says:

Hooker would be a good 3rd string. If late and cheap. Gabby will start and Trask back up. Out with all free agents and anyone we can trade for draft picks. Promote the whole practice squad and start over. Trade our first round pick for multiple lower rounf picks. Our first round picks always suck and cost a fortune.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @TOMMY MORDUE

I believe Gabbert is a free agent so we can’t trade him.

As to trading up…tough one. Our picks are at a premium this year. If anything, we need to add picks, not trade them away…though I would not be against trading away our two 7th rounders if needed.

  29. Tvan101 Says:

Why does everyone think Trask is so terrible, Blaine Gabbert didn’t beat him as much as he was Tom’s choice for backup QB/offensive assistant. To think that Trask who has been studying and training against NFL defenses will be worse then a rookie with a blown knee just shows the bias Joe has against Trask, it is ridiculous.

  30. beano Says:

So much love for SEC quarterback Hooker. SEC quarterback Trask had far better stats than Hooker and here it’s been all about hating on Trask. Hmm. Why is that? I can SEE only one reason.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I know nothing about this years quartbacks. I used to research them by watching their games…but I do not have time to do that anymore.

I would think that Air Raid quarterbacks have so many options that their eyes are constantly shifting, making them harder to read in college? That could help Hooker out in the pros?

So, the uniform. Let’s go there.

Is it an omen? A sign for Bucs fans? If so, is it a good omen or a bad one?

On one side, it could be a fate sending a message to draft him.

Or, it could be fate warning us with a reminder of losing times so we don’t draft him.

If you are into signs, how would you read it?

The injury concerns me. Will it affect his scrambling ability? Was it his planting leg?

Personally, I would not be against making him a 4th round or later pick. But that’s me not knowing anything about any of the college players.

  32. Oneilbuc Says:

Tvan. I said the same thing bro I don’t understand it either. Especially when the past two years the coaches said it wasn’t a competition between Trask and Gabbert but they pushed a narrative that Gabbert beat out Trask and now that’s what a lot of people believe. As long as Brady was on the team ain’t no young quarterback was getting a chance to practice with the starters.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Tvan101

I tend to agree…not so much that he was Brady’s choice, but that Bowles wanted an experienced backup.

He may also have wanted to avoid a QB controversy. It could possibly be argued that no one wanted Trask promoted because that would stir one up. With a guy like Brady at the helm, teams usually avoid such drama.

I recognise that some fans want fresh options to get excited over. If the Bucs choose to run with Trask, then I doubt many fans will be happy at first.

Trask would have to step up and prove himself to them…and I’m okay with that if he’s got it in him.

I think the focus this year should be on the lines. Forget drafting QBs. Just go after offensive and defensive line players. Dedicate the draft to that and let the rest of the team reap the benefits.

Trask would make fewer mistakes because of good pass protection. And if he doesn’t work out? The next guy will be well protected.

  34. Infomeplease Says:

Another potential injury prone addition to an injury prone team!! Perfect!!! Can we find guys we can put on the field on Sundays???

  35. Warrenfb12 Says:

Pass. If you are gonna draft a QB just draft an accurate thrower with solid mechanics man. That’s what the Bucs need to focus on.

  36. WillieG Says:

Vertical thrower? Sounds perfect for a Todd Bowles team. (The preceding comment was brought to you by sarcasm. Sarcasm. It’s what’s for breakfast.)

  37. Brandon Jeff Says:

Hooker looks great in the highlight film but who doesn’t. I like his ability to escape pressure and his quick release. He is not a polished qb and has some glaring weaknesses though.
The tendency to stare down his first read and inability to work through progressions will necessitate a lot of development in the pros. He is a project but has potential.
Trask on the other hand needed to improve mobility in the pocket and had a slow, elongated release. Hopefully these traits have improved.
Both have played against the best competition in the SEC while showing accuracy, a deep ball and ability to minimize interceptions. Right now I would rate Trask as the better prospect for us as he has had two years to develop. Hopefully, that development has actually happened.
I would consider taking a flyer on Hooker but not before the 3rd round as we have other pressing needs.
In summation, we need to hand the reins to Trask and see how he develops.
Worse case scenario, he doesn’t develop but we were able to improve our roster and our cap status while securing a higher draft pick for a much better a class in 2024. My apologies for the rambling post.

  38. bucnjim Says:

The Atlanta game both backups saw limited action against the Falcons. One looked like a QB the other well not sure what he looked like.

1ST OF ALL, I FEEL WE SHOULD TRADE FOR BAKER MAYFIELD

    1. He’s a free agent, so we don’t need to trade for him.
    2. STOP YELLING!!! TURN OFF CAPS LOCK!!!

  41. Marine Buc Says:

What about using a late pick (5th/6th round) on Fresno State QB Jake Haener?

Senior Bowl MVP… Had a pretty solid season at FS.

  42. ImTheCaptain Says:

There is no sense in drafting a QB to learn the bowlells bowl of bowls bowells system, only to have him learn a new system when bowls bowels get fired for stinking up the place, again. Draft a LB please.

  43. #99 the Big fella Says:

Beano, attacking joe is absurd.. Have you taken your meds today? Are you seriously trying to pull the race card?

  44. firethecannons Says:

Use Trask as our quarterback, draft wisely not quarterback, clean roster of dead weight and make some smart trades and get out of cap hell. Let Bowles be be who he is (a loser) and get ready for #1 pick in 2024 and a new head coach. We will have zero wins so it is almost guaranteed. Let Trask play.

  45. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    @Tommy Mordue
I agree, please stop posting in all Caps!

Hooker may be a steal in this draft because of his knee injury.
In the SEC he gave Alabama fits, playing for Tennessee.

If we can get him in round 3 or later, I say go for it!

  46. Dooley Says:

Hooker vs. Trask vs ??? = Your 2023 Bucs QB. Yes he’s injured, likely won’t participate in much pre-draft activities, buuuuuuuut that should also take him off the board for QB needed teams looking to land a QB in round 1, which I don’t expect Licht to do with our 19th overall pick. What will be interesting to watch play out is once day 2 kicks off and if Hooker is still on the board and to see if he’s on Lichts’ draft board, how far we’d be willing to move around in order to line acquiring Hooker up. Hooker was the most I’ve watched of Tennessee since Manning was there, partly because of Hooker and mostly because that whole offense was humming until he went down.

  47. sasquatch Says:

@beano thinks Joe is discriminating against white QBs. Doesn’t get much dumber than that.

  48. Crickett Baker Says:

All I can say is that Hooker got injured. I don’t want any more players who got injured and missed games before we even got them. How did that work out last year?

  49. R.O. Says:

No issue taking him in the right place. Again I’d like to scoot down from 19. Grab an extra 2nd/3rd and mid rd pick. If we can walk away with HH with theb extra 2nd or 3 sure. He did not look good against Georgia.

  50. mark2001 Says:

So the choice is picking a guy with talent but coming off an injury…or a guy with lesser talent that is healthy. For me, I say take the guy with the talent. It might take him months to get on the field, but Trask deserves a few months to really gauge his worth. If Trask bombs out, by midseason me might have his replacement ready to go. If not, we might have to wait longer. But better than a career backup talent, which is what we might already have.

  51. mark2001 Says:

Don’t think we can trade down much at all to get him. Depends on how the board falls, but I don’t think he will go out of the first round, and pretty sure not down to our second-round pick.

  52. Defense Rules Says:

I tutor 2nd-graders a couple times a week in math, and the most common word I end up using is FOCUS. Try to teach math to 4 or 5 boys in a group, and it’s very much like herding cats.

Well, this off-season the Bucs need to FOCUS like never before. We have a bunch of NEEDS, especially on defense, and relatively little money right now to fill those needs with. IOW this draft will be critical (so will the 2024 draft) to building the TEAM of the future. We’ll probably have to hit on at least 3 players (hopefully more) to be starters and/or key rotational players … in both drafts. More than likely the Top-3 rounds will give us our best shot at finding those players.

Bucs can’t afford to waste a single pick in the Top-3 rounds. Our biggest question is how to prioritize those needs. Do we go with a DT or a DE/OLB or a ILB or a S or a CB or a TE or a OL or a WR or maybe even a RB in those Top-3 rounds? Yes we need a QB, but focus on those other NEEDS for this year to build a TEAM that could support a young QB, offensively AND defensively. I much prefer to go with Trask, re-sign Gabbert (if he’s even willing to re-sign with us) AND grab one of the FA QBs available this year for a very reasonable cost.

Besides, if we have a good year, that’d mean we’ve found a QB.
If we have a bad year, we’ll have a better draft position in 2024 AND the potential QB crop is supposed to be quite a bit better. And oh ya, we don’t need any more injured players needing rehab. We’ve got plenty right now.

  53. Nate Says:

Bowles or OC scheme aside he is the best proven talent (SEC tested talent at that with the Stats to prove it unlike someone on the team ) in that round 2-3 range due to the injury which the Bucs know how to train for those injuries. 💯

  54. Goatfarmer Says:

I do like Hooker, way more than Trashk. He can actually go through a progression, at least to a secondary receiver, and appears to sense the difference between real pass rush and Glennon disease.

  55. Bigbucfan90 Says:

This guy in the second would be a steal he has so much upside and no one is taking about the accolades he has at Tennessee

  56. alton d green Says:

    his mother is a Hooker

  57. Joe Says:

    Glennon disease.

LOL! Thought “Glennon Disease” was throwing four yards short of the sticks on third down. 🙂

  58. Allbuccedup Says:

Package Smith and Gage and get another 3rd round pick if hes available then take him. Lately Ohio State QBs are not doing that well in the nfl buyer beware.
Joe Burrow was successful because he left OSU and went to LSU.

  59. beano Says:

Goatfarmer Says: “I do like Hooker.”

    Of course you do.

  60. Buccos Says:

I would draft him just for his name. Every dancing and working girl in Tampa would buy his jersey. Joe could hand them out at his Christmas party

  61. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

He’s a 3rd round pick at best, and we are better off stocking up the roster this year, starting Trask, and getting an elite QB next year.

  62. Rod Munch Says:

On the injury front, guys are coming back from that quicker and quicker, that wouldn’t be of any concern, in particular considering you’re getting him for 5-years for cheap.

With that said, I don’t know anything about this guy. But I know Trask was also a downfield thrower, one who threw rainbows that would never be complete in the NFL. Getting Trask to speed things up, including putting velocity on the ball, has been an issue, since, as we’ve seen (in limited snaps, to be fair) when he gets in trouble, he’d revert back to those slow rainbow passes.

So watching Trask’s tape, it was really really really obvious he’s not an NFL QB, at least with the way he threw the ball, meaning he was a project with a very high bust possibility. I’m not saying Trask is a bust at this point, but obviously things have not gone well.

However, if this guy is really really good, and falls because of injury, then that seems like someone the Bucs should pounce on.

  63. Rod Munch Says:

Not that anyone cares, but from watching some highlights here’s my thoughts…

He’s got, by NFL standards, a B arm – which is a lot better than the D arm I’d say Trask has. He doesn’t have a cannon, in terms of velocity, but he’s certainly got more than enough velocity. He looks like he throws the ball with very little effort, makes you wonder if he can whip the ball even harder than what I saw.

He had so much time and his guys were so open, so I didn’t see anything when he’s under pressure, so I can’t really say anything about his judgement.

He moves pretty well, I’d say B by NFL QB standards. Not top their, but he certainly has enough speed to pickup yards. Visually, he reminds me a ton of Doug Williams, just with his build and the way he moves.

He’s listed at 6′ 4″ and 208lbs, which is a good size for a QB. He might want to put on 15lbs just to help take the beating he’s going to get in the NFL, then again the NFL is putting dresses on QBs and not letting them get hit anymore, so maybe that doesn’t matter.

At 25 years old already, a year older than Trask, you assume he should already be mature and ready to go day 1.

Based on my very short time reading up on him and watching plays, based off what I currently know, I’d have no problem taking him. Again, that’s based off what I know at the moment, which isn’t much.

  64. Joe Swanson Says:

I would not give up two number one draft picks a second pick plus another pick to select any unproven quarterback.

  65. BigMacAttack Says:

The Bucs have drafted damaged goods before and it never works out. If it 5’th round or later, go for it, otherwise pass.

  66. CalBucsFan Says:

I would be quite fine with the Bucs bringing Georgia’s OC Moniken back along with his national champion QB Bennett. Teamed up they won two national championships beating Alabama 33-18 in 2022 and then TCU 65-7!

As a college QB walk-on that young man had much to prove just like TB being drafted so low in back in the day. And all “The Mailman” did for 2-seasons was play like the second coming of Drew Brees to win back-to-back championships. After being coached up by Moniken, he should be more than ready to step right in and win at a minimum the NFC South.

Seems like a no-brainer to me, come on JL, let’s go Bucs!

  67. mark2001 Says:

Call. I’m not sure it is as much bringing him back, as him wanting to return to a job and an organization that fired him a few years ago.

  68. Goatfarmer Says:

    Buccos – ROTFLMAO!

  69. Goatfarmer Says:

    Cal – the Redskins tried that. Spurrier, Wuerffel, B U S T.

Maybe it could happen. Monken would be the best to judge. If he said yes I’d take it for a spin.

I do like the Hooker though.

  70. SOEbuc Says:

Was going in the second before the injury. Trade back for our possible missing fourth. Deep second early third.

  71. Brian Says:

Like this guy ,at least on film

  72. CalBucsFan Says:

@Mark2001 Yeah, I would agree, Moniken having been fired previously would be a tough hurdle to overcome, but that combination of an NFL experienced OC coach and a walk-on college QB who’ve worked together and won back-to-back national championships against near NFL quality teams sending players into the pipeline is just too appealing. Perhaps Moniken sees something special in Bennett and would want to keep working with him?

  73. BeeBucs Says:

Todd Monken comes from the Air Raid tree!!!!

  74. Todd Says:

This young man is the best QB in this draft, and quite possibly the best we have seen since Mahomes, or Watson were drafted. You can see it, he just has it. Whoever lands this young man will be a team no one saw coming.

  75. ScottyMack Says:

The kid looks good on tape but there are a few concerns …

Very few of his throws on thee highlight reel were under pressure. He had all day to throw – something the Bucs OL did not afford Brady this season. He also locks in on his receiver immediately – much faster NFL DBs will catch onto that very quickly and jump the routes.

One of the things that bothered me about Brady this past season is that he decided who he was going to throw it to before the snap and didn’t even look for other receivers. Many times, there was somebody else WIDE OPEN and Brady was trying to jam the ball into a well covered receiver, instead. He probably thought he had little choice because he was getting rid of the ball in under 2.5 seconds every pass.

I think the Bucs are going to need a guy with some wheels and Hooker has those (at least I hope he does post-surgery). But they also are going to need a guy who can quickly survey the field. The tape doesn’t show Hooker doing that unless he has 5-6 seconds to throw. Baker Mayfield gives the Bucs both of those things. Watch him and you can see him go through all of his reads in less than 2 seconds. He also is just fast enough to escape a pass rush.

I think the Bucs should pick up Mayfield and sure, Hooker if they can get him later in the draft (3rd round or later).

  76. Ben Harvey Says:

    Bridgewater 2.0?

  77. Ed Says:

There is a little bit of the Doug Williams throwing motion but without the velocity of Doug.

He throws some very good balls in this tape and some that are not that good, that shows some inconsistency. He moves well. In open field he looks very fast.

He shouldn’t be considered a higher pick than 3 or 4 because you can see that he had amazing receiving talent and a great offensive line. Didn’t see much pressure in these highlights.

Then there is that injury. He won’t be able to run in the combine or do much for the scouts.

I would pick him up after the 3rd round. Use the premium picks on some harder nosed players for the trenches. Bucs need more strength and speed to replace their aging roster.
