Bruce Arians Man Gets Bucs’ QB Coach Gig

February 21st, 2023

Bucco Bruce Arians

Joe is very happy for Bucco Bruce Arians tonight.

Joe also is happy for the Buccaneers’ new quarterbacks coach, Thaddeus Lewis. An NFL backup QB from 2010 through 2016, Lewis joined Arians’ staff in Tampa full-time in 2021 after part-time work in 2020. Arians spoke of Lewis, 35, as a future offensive coordinator and a sharp up-and-coming coach.

After Todd Bowles flushed failed playcaller Bryon Leftwich and other Arians offensive coaches in January, and hired a new offensive coordinator, Joe was skeptical of Lewis getting a shot at the QB coach gig. But here he is. Well done.

Interestingly, it was pending free agent Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith who seemed to break the news on Twitter.

“My boy Thad Lewis got the Bucs QB coach job! Bro that’s crazy!” Lewis typed. It seems Lewis and Smith have a relationship dating to Smith’s high school days.

Of course, that makes the prospect of Smith coming to Tampa appear more possible. New offensive coordinator Dave Canales was Smith’s QB coach in Seattle.

Whoop de Doo…Huzzah! We got em now. Super Bowl Bound!

  2. CrackWise Says:

You can BET BA will be HANDS ON this year. As opposed to last year when he realized he needed to get out of the way of the slow-motion EGO Driven TRAIN WRECK known as BL and TB.

Two QB Egos against a HOF coach EGO.

    BA equals WINNING

  3. Vlad The Impaler Says:

So another Arians endorsed assistant coach has been hired by the Bucs?

  4. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    What could possibly go wrong?

  5. CrackWise Says:

Now, all I want to know is, does Coach Lewis butcher the English language or not?

  6. CrackWise Says:

QB Smith is welcomed to come to Tampa on a one-year Winston type deal. He can sit behind KT and BG and LEARN.

    Otherwise, no thanks

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

A BA endorsement for an up and coming OC?

    I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

  8. sasquatch Says:

It doesn’t make Geno Smith coming to Tampa more likely… unless Geno wants to play for less than 10 million.

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

Fit Thad for a flat bill stat.

Hmmmm, gee, I wonder what would make you suspect that he would butcher the English language… Hmmm, gee, it’s so difficult to imagine what trait might make you suggest such a thing… I mean, somebody might get their panties bunched up if we called you the R word, but if the foo sh!ts.

Oh the white hoods are crawling up from the basement.

  12. DoooshLaRue Says:

I just watched an interview with Thad from college and he actually seemed to be in command of the English language.
So we can put that to rest.

However, due to his head shape, we need to get him a flat bill right away.

  13. shak Says:

sasquatch, I think he meant it as a slight against Leftwitch. people who made/make a big deal out of the way he speaks are “weird” to me though, so I feel what you are putting down.

Well, Leftwich actually DID butcher the language and looked like a clown with the flat-brim pulled down to his eyebrows… but the subtext of the above comments is clearly making assumptions based on (take a guess).

    please no geno here

  17. Dooley Says:

Thad Lewis at the least is an experienced new addition to the staff, but is also well versed in BAs scheme and can act as a translator for Canales in conncecting with the players to decipher what the most of our holdover offensive talent knows. Arians was grooming Lewis at one point to go out and be hired as an OC, but in the meantime can serve as a bridge and provide input on keeping some of what worked under BA & Leftwich while also being able to help Canales build on/implement what he wants this offense to be. Smart hire on Canales’ part imo all before the combine which I’m sure he’s pumped to be apart of this draft process being much higher up in the coaching hierarchy as OC.

  18. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Real football fans actually support coaching staffs as much as they support players. They do it just because they are part of our team.

We all know some players are blessed with naturally smooth articulation while others stumble in their required roles when speaking publicly. It all comes with the job. How does that differ from people in any other walk of life?

    Go Bucs!!!

  19. ABucAway Says:

Arians approved future HC? Thad may want to duck away from that endorsement.
I wonder which veteran QB we are aiming for?

  20. Kgh4life Says:

This has Todd Bowles written all over it. I had hoped Canales would’ve hired his own QB coach. Hope it works out.

  21. Mort Says:

Grover, you’re the most negative thing about this entire franchise. Good lord. Go smoke some pot or something. Relax.

  22. Stebobucsfan Says:

Thad promotion almost certainly says Trask is the starter in 023. Good deal. I don’t think this is time for Bucs to break the bank on signing a big name QB. Less see what we have in Trask first then move on. From what I am hearing, we may need a LT , CB and maybe LB and DT. But, as I keep saying, opinions are like rear ends, everybody got one

  23. Lakeland Steve Says:

All of the almost racist innuendo just lends credence to the people who say that rednecks are a bunch of hillbilly, backwards, incestuous, ignorant dumbasses. Heck I disagree. Y’all ain’t dumb.

  24. shak Says:

Come on, give Trask a chance!!

  25. HC Grover Says:

    _____________

Sounds great, but your theory has a serious flaw.

A coach, be it a HC, coordinator or a position coach is a teacher first and foremost right?
If that person can’t communicate effectively then how can he coach effectively?

  27. Eric Says:

I normally don’t talk about another man’s wallet but Hell would freeze over before I would even be convinced Geno deserves a 35 million/ year contract!

  28. Stebobucsfan Says:

So I haven’t seen or heard the Bucs announce the hiring of the guy from Seattle as WR coach. Did I miss the announcement

  29. Mike S Says:

    Who?

  30. Tnoles Says:

Whatever, I’m not impressed. All these dudes who have zero experience in the jobs they just aquired is a sign of desperation. And this hire was to appease Arians who is all about his ego and his lasting imprint on this organization. Just look at the mess he left in Arizona. Talking about Arians and his impact in organizations. Where’s the Arizona GM now probably in rehab from the ” you lose you booze” mentality of Arians. I don’t trust Arians this has all been a last ditch effort on his behalf to ensure people loyal to him get paid regardless of their qualifications.

Their usual habit is to announce new coaches when they’ve completed the staff. They only made an exception with Canales because there was so much clamoring for the information and heat from people criticizing them for taking so long.

Canales is supposed to meet with the media tomorrow. I’m guessing they’ll make all these hirings official then, or maybe announce them on the website shortly before.

Not really. I understand why people are trying to connect those dots, but I’m not buying it for at least one big reason — we can not afford to pay Smith.

When you think about it, all these connections are purely coincidental. They don’t go out and hire an OC to attract a one-year wonder QB… And Thad Lewis was already on the staff. He was a good candidate to move up to QB coach regardless of who the OC was going to be.

  35. Marine Buc Says:

Congrats to Thad Lewis… It’s nice to see a Buc coach get a promotion.

I like the coaching staff the Bucs are assembling so far…

Beggars can’t be choosers. Let’s give these guys a chance and hope for the best.

  36. Hodad Says:

Good for Thad Lewis. If him, and Canales become head coaches in the near future, that would mean the bucs will have done good. True fans would be cheering these young men on. That’s what I’m going to do. Good luck to all our new coaches, hoping you do well.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Why would anyone with a future want to come here willingly? I mean if you’re a QB coach and you got Gabbert and Trask to work with, on a Todd Bowles coached team, you’re getting fired at the end of the year and that could be the end of your career. The last place any young coach should want to be is in a one-and-done situation.

  38. Goatfarmer Says:

Sasquatch – nice takes particularly about the nutjob’s commentary on new coach’s prospective speech patterns.

  39. JimbobBucsFan Says:

You don’t have to use “the queen’s English” in order to be able to communicate effectively as a coach to a player! Good communication can be accomplished by those whose language is not so polished. … Comprende? Capisci? Do ya get my gist?

  40. Snookman9 Says:

    5-12 to 6-11

  41. Will Says:

All this pissing and moaning is ridiculous. Guess what Andy Reid, McVay, whoever you wanna talk about as a great play caller at one time or another had no experience at doing it. Stop complaining and let’s see how this turns out. Smh

  42. Rod Munch Says:

I will add that Monte Kiffin sounded like the coach in The Waterboy and didn’t speak a bit of english. However he produced a bunch of HOF’ers and should be a HOF’er himself. Being able to talk good is overrated.

  43. shak Says:

    Exactly Munch!

  44. Voice of Truth Says:

We see where his past endorsements have gotten us…..

  45. Go Bucs Go Says:

More like 2-15 ish at this point.
Too many unproven staff and uncertainties looming in NFC (going) South.
Hey, anything can happen, who knows!?!

    Go Bucs!

  46. garro Says:

Let’s look at the record…shall we?
Hmm…Not impressed with the (BA men) so far. Geez
We can’t find a truly qualified coach!?!
This has now officially turned into a cluster!@#$

  47. Goatfarmer Says:

After what season does our former Jets failed head coich get fired? The football gods are punishing us for the Brady holiday. Now it’s back to suck, starting with the torture of watching one most unfit for the job, do the job and drive us deeper into the sewer than Raheemnik, Schianonik, Love, or Big Head Mike Smith.

I’m sitting here believing that the bastage is going to wiggle around, suck this year but the Glazers grant him a third for “extenuating circumstances.”

I’m afraid the Toadster is ours until after the 2024 season. Woohoo.

Might as well enter a self-induced coma right now. Wake up in time to see some new cretin come in and suck for two or three more years. Rinse and repeat.

He was on the Bucs coaching staff last year.

  49. Letsbucinggo Says:

If seattle doesn’t tag Geno he will be in Tampa by march the 16th.

  50. Buddy Says:

Oh great another one of Grandpa’s guys. How did that work out last year with incompetent Bowles. In general how has the whole Diversity coaching staff worked out??? lol what a damn joke.

  51. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Thad Lewis probably worked some with Kyle Trask…..so, I wouldn’t be so quick to anoint Geno….
Perhaps Canales has signed off on the possibility that we are going with Trask.

  52. Allbuccedup Says:

Looks like they are setting the team up to attract Geno. They did a similar thing with Tom Brady. But Geno Smith is ok but no Tom Brady
Bowles is pushing hard for his guy Geno.

  53. D-Rok Says:

    Seems like a decent hire.

  54. Pablocruise Says:

I don’t think Canales or any other coach would have signed on for the OC if he didn’t do his homework, talk to other coach’s inside and outside of 1 BUC. At some point young guys have to move up, coaching isn’t just about x’s & o’s it’s about an attitude as well and trying to instill that in these guys, teach and motivate them, some are in it just for the dollars, I know shocking. Sometimes it is just getting your foot in the door like any other corporate job. I have a hard time believing that BA or any of the Glazers don’t want to win first and foremost.
I think they give Trask a real chance, hope they do. The injuries combined with those that left on the O line were just brutal.
