An All-53 Man Super Bowl Roster

February 12th, 2023

Made all-time Super Bowl team.

One Bucs player made it. Another made it, in part, because of his lone Super Bowl with the Bucs. One safety should have made it. One legendary player didn’t.

Over at CBS, Bryan DeArdo decided to come up with his all-time 53-man Super Bowl squad, comprised of players who played in the Super Bowl.

Only two Bucs made the team: Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks, who only played for the Bucs, and foot-rubbing tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The list of Super Bowl outside linebackers is so great that Brooks was moved to inside linebacker next to Ray Lewis.

With Gronk, DeArdo noted he largely made the team based on his two-touchdown catch performance for the Bucs two years ago.

Two defensive players who didn’t make the squad were guys Joe thought had a good case.

Bucs safety Dwight Smith had two pick-sixes when the Bucs beat the Raiders. No other defender in the Super Bowl had two pick-sixes.

As a sentimental favorite, Joe thought Simeon Rice should have made it. You could make a helluva case that Rice would have been the Super Bowl MVP of that win over the Raiders. He hounded Rich Gannon all night and had two sacks. Oakland simply had no answer for him.

    Joe,

Will Simeon get into the HOF?

Will Simeon get into the HOF?

    Not looking good.

  3. David Says:

Simeon should have been SB MVP. He caused as much havoc as Shaq Barrett did in his Super Bowl.

  4. flipster Says:

Does Brady not count as a Buc?

  5. Bucs Guy Says:

Simeon’s best chance is through the Veteran’s Committee. I don’t agree, but unfortunately that’s reality when you aren’t even getting recognized enough to be voted upon.

  6. Pablo Says:

Joe, you saw only one Buccaneer made it.
Since when doesn’t Brady count as a Buccaneer? One of his most memorable Super Bowls happened in 2020 when he lead a team that annihilated the Chiefs qb’d by the NFL’s golden boy Patrick Mahomes.

Speaking of which, all hail Carl Cheffers the ref who officiated that Super Bowl 55. He’s also the ref for tonight’s game. Just watch how he calls the game fairly and you don’t have to feel at all like the game is a ref job.

As a collective group, the NFL’s officials are so awful and sadly they were heavily against the Buccaneers the last two years, but especially this one. All of them except Cheffers. Perhaps he’s the only one Vegas and the NFL cannot corrupt.

Conversely there are the Gene Steratore’s (yes, retred), Shawn and Ed Hochuli’s and Jerome Bogar’s of the league. Officiating has been ruining and holding back the NFL for 3 decades.

James Wilder didn’t make the list ? Imagine what he could have done playing behind a good OL

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m quite sure James Wilder never played in a SB….so he doesn’t qualify for the list.

Also…..why is Simeon Rice not in the Buc Ring of Honor if he is so great he should be in the HOF?

  9. stpetebucfan Says:

Simeon Rice may be the most underrated Buc player of all time.

  10. BUCS Fan Says:

That list had 5 Defensive Tackles and let Warren Sapp off the list. That list should be crumpled up and thrown away.

  11. View from 132 Says:

So tired of the Ray Lewis bias on all these lists. Derrick was up against a #1 offense. The dog barker hype machine was up against … QB Kerry Collins? Pfft. Overrated, as always.

  12. Macajubav Says:

Ray Lewis has a true killer instinct ! When attacking that ball.

  13. Huh? Says:

    Brady also made the list.

  14. chris l Says:

lol did we miss the greatest player ever in brady?

  15. ModHairKen Says:

Simeon Rice had big moments and was the Invisible Man other times. A good player. Not great.

  16. rrsrq Says:

Sapp on the practice squad, but no Dwight Smith

  17. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Just to clarify, Dwight Smith was a third corner, not a safety. I know he was moved to safety the following year when we lost Dexter Jackson to the Cards, but for the Super Bowl year, he came in on nickle packages as a corner.
