Todd Bowles Hands Out Postseason Awards

January 23rd, 2023

There was no red carpet, big crowd or fancy liquor sponsor, but still there was a bit of a Bucs postseason honors show with the head coach as the featured speaker.

Joe is referencing Todd Bowles joining the Buccaneers Radio Network and lauding players with prestigious labels.

Bowles was asked to name a team MVP not named Tom Brady. The head coach pointed to Chris Godwin.

In addition to saying Godwin improved each week after coming back from injury, Bowles said Godwin is a special blocker and pass catcher, and he said Godwin “brought toughness back to our offense” and “he’s everything a Buccaneer epitomizes.”

As to pick a most improved player, Bowles chose two: edge rusher Anthony Nelson and cornerback Jamel Dean. Ironically, both are pending free agents and the Bucs are over next season’s salary cap (subject to change, of course).

Bowles cited Nelson blossoming after Shaq Barrett was lost to injury in midseason. And he said Dean was “one of the best cover guys in the league” through possibly a full three-quarters of the season.

High praise there for Dean. Wow.

The trumpets sort of ended there on the show after Bowles praised members of his rookie class without really singling anyone out. He dropped love on Logan Hall, Rachaad White, Cade Otton, Jake Camarda, Zyon McCollum and Ko Kieft in that specific rookie conversation but no mention of Luke Goedeke.

  2. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

then why didnt dean play the last game?

  3. BucsFan81 Says:

Wow this is the society we live in now. No one is a loser and everyone gets a trophy. No one on this team deserves anything all of them sucked from the players to the coaches.?

  4. Your Mom Says:

Probably would have been a good idea to skip these awards this year.

  5. Infomeplease Says:

The problem for our corners is they are used to much in zone coverages. Davis and Dean are way better playing man to man!! But Bowles doesn’t want to tire our defense out so he plays a lot of zone! Good qb s pick zone apart if there is not a great pass rush!! Even 2nd stringers and rookie qb s do too!!!

  6. Austin Christopher Lewis Says:

We better sign david and dean… im gunna miss gholston 🙁 some OGs leaving

  7. Austin Christopher Lewis Says:

Cut donovan smith as soon as absolutely possible

  8. SB~LV Says:

    Fire Todd Bowles

  9. Lokog Says:

No awards should be given to this team maybe a participation trophy kuz they don’t deserve anything

  10. ViSyl Says:

    Nobody deserves an award

  11. SlyPirate Says:

Goedeke and Hall had rough rookie seasons. Hopefully they are putting in the work.

  12. BuxfaninTX Says:

    The MVP was Jake Camarda

  13. NEfan Says:

This is the stupidest thing he’s done thus far! Ahh maybe not.

  14. SKBucsFan Says:

Who was the Offensive Coach of the Year?

  15. Sleepy Bowles Says:

Okay, the team was basically the same as the Super Bowl team. I’m not a fan of Leftwich, but how did he go from top head coach prospect to fired? What changed?

The head coach changed! Sleepy Bowles obviously changed the offense to match his philosophy. His words, “We need to get better in 23 if we’re going to win a division.” WHAT!? A DIVISION!? It’s Super Bowl or bust! Bowles should have been the first head on the chopping block.

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

    “He was asked…”

Can’t be all doom and gloom all the time guys. It’s football!

  17. Allbuccedup Says:

I hope they gave Donovan Smith an award for player that regressed the most. He went from an above average left tackle to one of the bottom five left tackles in the league move on an save 10 mil.

  18. Craig Says:

Coaches should do no more than hand out game balls. Players should be equal at the end of the season, especially one as ugly as we just witnessed.

Picking a half a dozen names to exalt shows how bad of a coach he is.

  19. darengibo Says:

Luke Goedeke gets a lot of criticism, but they had the ROOKIE play out of position so often and not with a cohesive line, which MOST rookies need… especially in the trenches.

Not sure what the future holds for next season, but I can tell you that Bowles does not excite me in the least. Really wish we had a mulligan to have a dynamic offensive minded/creative head coach after BA stepped down… heck, I bet Byron does too since then he would be interviewing for HC opportunities again!

  20. Crickett Baker Says:

Well, at least he gave us a hint about who he will try to keep. Rookies are still cheap. He gets one more year with his hand-picked team and coaches but most of us see the writing on the wall. No sense in belaboring the point. Let us hope the draft gains some miracles, and we have some exciting games.

  21. Goatfarmer Says:

Boob of the year, B’mron Leftwurst.

Incontinent of the Year – Toad’s Bowels. And we are stuck with that disaster. Unless Tom says to the Glazer sons “It’s either him or me. Your choice.”

  22. BucU Says:

Look forward to the post season awards after next season when we go 4-13.

  23. Darin Says:

Yeah Camarda has to be the MVP. Great punts and he sure looked like the leading special teams tackler to me. But let’s keep the special teams coach. Special he is. Bowles for coach of the year!

  24. Tony Says:

    Postseason awards for what?

  25. Tony Says:

I wouldn’t hand out any awards to anybody. Camarda would be the only one I’d probably hand an award out to.

  26. adam from ny Says:

    did hall even exist?

no choice but to put weight and muscle on him and hope he pans out in the middle…

you can’t add speed to a man, so slimming down and playing off the edge probably wouldn’t work…

    he’s a tweener who eventually didn’t exist…

sign gholston for next year and bulk up hall and groom him to be the next gholston…

    what else can you do

  27. SB~LV Says:

Play Godeke in his natural position

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Cone on…fans…..let the coach applaud some players….especially Godwin….after all, (unfortunately) he still is our coach and needs to try to lead the team. bless his heart.

  29. sasquatch Says:

Fans on this site love to be d!cks towards coaches and players they don’t like. I understood the contempt for Leftwich. He is dumb and he acted like he was above answering questions about his unit’s performance. However, Bowles is a good man and deserves the chance to see how they can do this year when he is able to pick his own coaches.

  30. TombsEN Says:

Sasquatch….thank you for being one of the voices of reason on this site, it’s so hard to find them here but it is definitely a few of you who make well thought out comments and do not just spout garbage….

  31. Jack Sparrow Says:

LEt’s see, i remember during his 4 years of JEts tenure he was given a free hand to pick his coaches…… and a QB,,,,, hmmmmm….

  32. adam from ny Says:

    @sasquatch:

    beware of big foot…

    the hairy bast!d just joined joebucsfan.com 🙂

  33. adam from ny Says:

let’s talk about where smb is going…

i think he might wind up in detroit on a 3 year deal

  34. Tom G Says:

Alot of comments in here about one player or another. IMO, #1, we need to do whatever to fix the O-line.

  35. mg Says:

give the owners the pink slip

  36. mg Says:

    Bowles deserves The Gong.

  37. Tony Says:

Can we hand out awards to Bowles & Leftwich for being worthless?

  38. JVZ Says:

    Hmm!

  39. K_bassuka Says:

It’s going to be another underwhelming year with Todd Bowles as a head coach.

  40. garro Says:

    Godwin … absolutely!
    Should have shut up there!

  41. Bucamania Says:

The only ‘award’ should’ve been comeback payer for Godwin and maybe best rookie in Camarda.

Besides Wirfs, it’s hard to think of a player who had a really good season.
