Mic’d Up Todd Bowles Reveals No Chatter To Offense

January 5th, 2023

Joe was all fired up for NFL Films having head coach Todd Bowles mic’d up against Carolina on Sunday in Tampa.

Joe thought it would provide a few insightful glimpses into Bowles, especially when it came to his interactions on the offensive side of the ball.

Fans watching saw Bowles step out of his stoic persona, especially after Anthony Nelson’s strip-sack in the fourth quarter. Bowles appeared to give Nelson a forearm to the chest and yell, “That’s what I’m fuc*’n talking about” a couple of times. There were other uncharacteristically emotional moments from Bowles.

But Joe was somewhat surprised the NFL Films editors didn’t find or share any comments from Bowles to offensive players or coaches or about offensive play, unless you count him yelling to go for a two-point conversion or a pregame “get after it” to Mike Evans and Rachaad White.

Joe would bet big money that the mic’d up editors would have shown Bowles saying something to Tom Brady if it had happened.

Joe recalls when former Bucs commander Greg Schiano, a defense-first head coach, was mic’d up in his first Bucs season in 2012. He was caught ordering his offensive coordinator to call a deep shot, and Schiano frequently interacted with his quarterbacks.

It’s very interesting to Joe that with a full game of footage and audio, Bowles is seen as 100 percent hands-off the offense.

    He’s not a HC. He’s a DC.

He’s instructed the offense to run a defensive-friendly scheme. “Up tempo burns out the defense.” It’s not their identity. He’s wounded the culture and cost the Bucs wins.

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

He is a Defensive Coordinator. Period. Todd Blowes has no business being a head coach. And he should know this and recognize it.

  3. david Says:

So along with Brady’s lack of focus & distractions, early WR injuries, O line injuries… it is all on BL

  4. D-Rok Says:

The very first part of the segment showed the Ref saying to Todd, “I know you mic’d, so I aint gonna say nuffin’.”

I like these behind-the-scenes segments, but does anyone REALLY think it isn’t all dialed WAY back when someone is on the hot mic?

It’s like there’s a declaration on the field – “Yo dawg, I’m mic’d up!” “OK, well let’s keep it clean, then.”

Hey, it’s better than nothing even though I’m sure it’s highly edited and heavily vetted by both NFL and the team before it’s released. Or, am I conspiracy wacko??? (Don’t answer that, LOL).

    GO BUCS!!!

  5. Kentucky Buc Says:

D-Rok is correct. You see what they want you to see/hear. Micd up doesn’t tell you Jack.

  6. Fitz Says:

Run it up the middle until it’s 3rd and long doesn’t require a lot of communication.

well i can explain why NFL films didn’t catch the Mummy’s potti mouth. I’m sure they just assumed it was somebody else. That’s understandable. He never talks, smiles, blinks, farts, pukes, craps, coughs, so they just assumed it couldn’t be Todd

  8. AbucAway Says:

Yep yep. What Drok and KB pointed out: Edited by two powerful entities, both with agenda’s. That said, a complete lack of chatter to the offense is ridiculous… Or a blessing, based on the results of the game. Interesting

  9. Redeemer Says:

Just more evidence that Bowles is strictly a coordinator. He doesn’t have to stick his nose in on every play, but nothing? As a “defensive expert” he must see things that could help once in a while. Hey BL, they’re shading this way every time. Hey, BL let’s run more bunch. Something, anything. What the hell good is he. His defensive coaches know the system inside out. The problem all year has been on offense. Part of being a good HC is delegation. But full autonomy for BL is half the reason they’ve sucked on offense. I don’t get it.

  10. John G Says:

You mean to say the best performance of the Bucs offense all year and Todd stayed out of it???? WHAT??? Who could have guessed that?! Maybe we should hear the other weeks when they are horrible and he kept interjecting.

  11. Red Skeleton Says:

He’s never in the offensive time out Huddles either. Totally hands off the pulse of the offense.

  12. D-Rok Says:

    But Redeemer,

At the LEAST, Todd should be telling BL: “Yo Dawg, here’s what their D be tryin’ to do to you.” And maybe Todd is doing just that, but none of us know it because it’s a closely-guarded secret at OBP.

It bears repeating: Just because no interaction on this segment occurred between Todd and BL doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, or isn’t happening….BUT, it sure seems like there isn’t much input given by Todd to anybody on the offense. Hopefully some credible evidence will come out proving us (me) all wrong, but until then, it doesn’t look like Todd has his hands in the offensive pie much, if any.

If it were me, I’d put my hands on as much offensive pie as I could get – simply because I’d want to learn and grow as a coach.

  13. NEfan Says:

That’s because Glazers had a little pow wow ( can I write that?) with him and told him to stay away from the O.

  14. kyle Says:

come on guys??? wake up, we all know who’s running this team. Its going to be a shizz show next year when he heads to the 9ers or raiders.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

    The famous Bowles Prevent Offense.

  16. sasquatch Says:

That could change if he turns over defensive playcalling to a trusted coordinator next year. Might also be a reflection that he and Byron are not close. Or it could mean he’s 100% disinterested in the offense. 🤷🏼‍♂️

  17. Infomeplease Says:

As a HC and defense savant, you wouldn’t want to point out a couple things to BL about what might work against the opposition’s defense. Or offer encouragement to a struggling offensive player or an “oh yah” to a great offensive play! You know talk up your players (that aren’t on the defense)!!!!

That could very well be the difference between a win and a loss 2 or 3 times during the season!!

What a poor excuse for a head coach!!!!

  18. catcard202 Says:

On one hand, you can say he’s really uninterested or tone deaf to the offense. On the other hand you could say he’s letting the offensive staff do their jobs.

Who really knows? But results speak for themselves. With Arians influence the offense produced nearly 2 more TD’s a game & without it they’ve floundered.…While Bucs D held pretty firm at being a quality outfit.

Is that Bowles lack of oversight or a sign of TB12’s rapid decline?? (I think it’s more likely TB12 decline, as same system with lesser QB & lesser supporting case put up >10 more pts/gm)

  19. McBucky Says:

    I agree. He’s a DC strictly.

  20. Alva fan Says:

The Bucs get out coached every week. It’s amazing the players have been able to get 8 wins with that schedule. Clock management and end of half/Game management was atrocious last week. Panthers totally out schemed the Bucs at the beginning of the game and the start of the third quarter. Bucs could have killed all the clock at the end of the first half and the final 2 minutes of the game. It is embarrassing watching the Bucs coaches run this team. Or are the players running it?

  21. Thugster Says:

Ha, you got Rooney ruled Tampa, congrats
