Firing Watch Out For Byron Leftwich

January 17th, 2023

“Byron, I’ll text Bill Belicheat and tell him you’re on the market.”

Joe expects the Bucs will show failed offensive coordinator the Byron Leftwich the proper respect and fire him today. That would give Leftwich a shot to land a new job during the NFL’s peak hiring season.

Perhaps he could land a playcaller gig with a club looking for a guy with experience and a Super Bowl ring.

Certainly, Leftwich at least could land a quarterback coaching job somewhere.

But Joe is sure, and has been sure, that Leftwich is a goner as long as Tom Brady doesn’t demand to stay in Tampa but only if Leftwich comes back with him.

Joe marveled at a graphic on the ESPN TV screen last night when the Bucs faced the Cowboys. This year under Leftwich, the Bucs were the worst team on 3rd-and-10-plus since 1980. That reveals a coordinator who isn’t adjusting. And there are plenty of similarly ugly stats out there for the 2022 Bucs offense.

Even if head coach Todd Bowles gave Leftwich a fresh set of foolish guidelines for the offense this season, Leftwich didn’t adjust and/or succeed in the parameters set by Bowles. He failed miserably and doesn’t deserve another season.

What a horrible season. Only decent game the Bucs put together was the Germany one. Other than that it was embarrassing. Bowles and Leftwich can’t be shown the door fast enough.

  2. Bosch Says:

If Leftloser is fired and bowel movement remains, then what have you accomplished? Tank for first 2024 pick with the same abysmal coaches.

  3. FortMyersDave Says:

Yeah Leftwich has to go, so does Bowels for that matter.. However, how much of the blame is on the hands of Bruce Arians, I mean the dude bolted from the barn and left the Bucs with Bowels as the HC which was obviously a recipe for disaster. The fact that Bowels let or encouraged Leftwich to call such a predictable vanilla offense is grounds for dismissal, it will be interesting who owns the most blame there. Maybe Bruce and his whole crew can go out to AZ and make them wish they had had not jettisoned Kliff Kingsbury.

  4. DCBUCSFN Says:

Listen, to Bucsnation, especially to the Jamies , Mcoy bashers..F Off! Lets call it what it is! Be grateful of the moment! winning a Super Bowl is once a lifetime the way the league is orchestrated ! Most of you bandwagons, please stay off!

  5. Pewter Power Says:

Man he has to hate us as much as we hate him. Couldn’t make as a quarterback or coordinator here. They had to know all season this wouldn’t work out so there’s no reason to wait to fire him

what happened last night, was in all reality a carry over from the rams playoff game that broke the bucs and ended their season in 2021…

this was an extension of the same crap…the secondary players were no where to be found on a multitude of broken plays…

i have never seen the secondary look this bad in an important game…ever…

what is up with bowles…he was a secondary guy…that’s his forte…

the defense was so utterly unprepared after the first couple of series that it makes you wonder if they just hung around one buc this week watching three stooges reruns or something…

this playoff loss is once again on bowles – and has scary remnants at the end of the rams game debacle in last years playoffs…

i don’t think bowles should be let off the hook here…the team was more unprepared than i think i have ever seen…

and we all know where leftwich stands…

the bucs were blown off the field like a bunch off poo-puts in what was a feature monday night football playoff game…

and this supposed high powered offense put up 6 points (not 14)…

this season i have watched my team drop further and further down the nfl’s totem pole as the months move forward…

i’m a diehard, a homer, a lifelong bucs fan – and the only way to sum up this entire season is a full fledged crash and burn…

Again, Brady is gone, next year you’re Tanking with Trask, trying to get that top pick in 2024 — Leftwich gives you the best chance to do that.

While the players and other coaches aren’t going to tank on purpose, just keeping Leftwich around is tanking. The Glazers don’t need to do anything other than just keep these idiots doing what they’re doing, then, after you secure that top pick in 2024, you fire all these idiots.

Unless you can trade for Payton right now. If you ship the Saints a 1st and get him, then do that, in particular if it means Brady comes back. But I don’t think the Saints would do that deal, and I don’t think Brady wants to come back to a team that needs to be restocked and is in legit cap hell.

  8. MelvinJunior Says:

“DCBUCSFN” – Hmmmm… Do What!? WHEN!? “Listen To” WHO… “BucsNation!?” What ‘channel’ is it on… Is it a ‘website,’ or WHAT!? Are they having a press conference, or something – Like, Right NOW!? BUT, “Be Grateful For The MOMENT… Huhhh!? Annnndd, “SUPER BOWL!?” HELLLLLL, Wasn’t THAT ‘2-YEARS’ AGOOO??? “The MOMENT” :/ “Grateful?” Uhhhhh… YEAH. I definitely, STILL, Don’t Get-It. 💯. At ALLLLL. So, I guess, go have anothern!!!!

  9. Rod Munch Says:

BTW, I’ve said all along that there was no way that the Saints would trade Payton to the Bucs, and I still believe that. However the Saints letting Payton interview with the Panthers, and Payton saying whoever gets him will likely have to give up a mid-to-late 1st … hummm.

No idea why the Saints would trade him to the NFC South, other than if he had some sort of handshake deal with the owner that he wouldn’t block a deal. If that’s the case, the Bucs should be in on it today.

  10. adam from ny Says:

    joe…post me broski…don’t block me…rock thee

  11. Bosch Says:

I could never be a fan of a team that Peyton coached. He should have been permanently banned from the NFL.

  12. Pewter Power Says:

If Sean Payton was to come here I wonder if the saints would care since they know his playbook inside out

  13. DCBUCSFN Says:

Oh Bty I wanna address all u ungrateful DT gerold Mcoy haters , Fuck y’all! ya vent seen a hall of famer like him since Ronde Barber ( HOF Finally) so up ue asses taking a bit out of Gerald! F U to all the bandwagons that just jumped in by BRADY! go back to ur college sucking !

  14. MelvinJunior Says:

OMGGGGG… STILLLLL!? I’ve been ‘gone’ for awhile, & Old “ROD” is STILL, obsessing over/talking about “PEYTON!?” Come-On, Mannnn… GTFO, PLEASE. “Saints Wouldn’t Do IT!?” GODDDDD… WHAT Are YOU EVENNNN, Talking About. NOOOOO. “PEYTON,” would NOT ‘Do-It.’ PERIOD. NEVER. With ALL the options that ‘HE’ HAS… PLEASE. Just STOP-IT, Mannnn. It’s PATHETIC. You’re NOTHING BUT A Lil ‘Troll.” AND, ‘you think’ that BRADY wouldn’t come back to ‘THAT’ (to what you’d explained), thennnn (in the same breath) ‘THINK’ Peyton WOULD!? Stoppppp. Itttttt. Also, if it’s a total ‘rebuild’ (and I believe it should be, IMMEDIATELY, unless maybe, you can ‘somehow,’ pull-off a move for “Lamar” – and I’m not 💯 fully ‘onboard’ with that-one, right now, anyway)… THEN, you HAVE TO start moving ‘pieces’ ANNNDDDD (come-up with and hopefully) HAVE a muuuch MUCH BETTER ‘Plannnnn’ Than “JUST ‘Tanking’ & THEN ‘Taking’ THE #1QB-projected – Without ANY regard of ‘whoever’ TF it is, & EVEN if it’s a ‘weak-afff’ draft-class. VERSUS, Idk… Maybe, working on ‘building’ a Roster FIRST, while strategically ‘positioning’ yourself, in “The MANNING Sweepstakes” (IF, he really is what he’s supposed to be). Peyton PLEASE. JUST. PURE. STUPIDITY. And Ignorance. Soooo, Yeahhhh… GrrrrREAT-Idea There, “Old-Ronnie!” Bravo! BRAVO! Just SUCH A Winner Lmao. Just Total Incompetence. ENOUGH. Just STOP.

  15. DCBUCSFN Says:

@melvinjr… i swear that i rather be a different fan than u .. get ur life together.. now back to the point, what was the Georgia offensive coordinator to replace Leftwich perhaps or maybe GIVE IT ONE MORE RUN AT IT AGAIN??? fukin Floridans!

  16. MelvinJunior Says:

OMGGGG… Reallyyyy!? AGAIN, “Rod!?” YOU Don’t Know WHY???? Sheeeew, geeeez!!!! I’m not wasting my time with getting into it ALL with YOU (especially) right now, Buuuuttt… Number-One, they NEEEEED ‘The Pick(s)’ & DESPERATELY. Especially, since losing their ‘number-1’ to PHILLY, in this years upcoming draft. And, another thing… WHAT TFFFF Is ‘WRONG’ With YOU, Dude… SERIOUSLY!? ALL you EVER do is just continuously, REPEAT “YOURSELF” constantly, saying the exact same-thing over and over AND OVERRR, again & AGAIN. It’s RIDICULOUS. I mean, WHYYYY EVEN, ‘comment’ in the FIRST-Place THEN, IFFFF ALL you’re ever going to do is ONLY, just repeat yourself? LITERALLY, saying the EXACT same ‘thing(s)’ 18-TIMES, EVERY single-day??? It’s STUPID. An old-man literally, OBSESSED over ANOTHER ‘old-man’ Football Coach… It’s UNBELIEVABLE.

  17. MelvinJunior Says:

And, if you’ve “said all along that the saints would NEVER do-it,” THEN WHYYYYY Are YOUUUU Continuing To SAY-ITTTTT!? It’s STUPID, Rod. It makes NO-sense. Think about something-else. For The Love Of GOD. YOU ARE definitely, a “Troll.” HAS TO BE.

  18. MelvinJunior Says:

“DCBUCSFN” – yeah, THAT was “the point” (‘mine’ anyways)… The ‘whole’ point. And, I STILLLLL don’t know just WHAT “the point” even, ISSSS!? So, What IS IT, Thennnn… You know, “The Point!?” Cause, I haven’t the first-clue. I ask YOU “the point,” BUT you NEVER EVEN, (say/tell-ME) just what that whole “point” WAS, thennnn YOU tell ME to “stick with the point!!!!” Makes NO-Sense. Maybe, IF “I” KNEW WHAT “the point” truly, is!?

  19. MelvinJunior Says:

I don’t understand, DCBUCSFN… “Different Kinda Fan” Than I AM!?:/ Whaaattt… Why’s THAT??? JUST bc, I guess, we ‘disagree’ about what (we both ‘think’) should happen with the upcoming decisions to be made with the current ‘coaching staff’ – I believe “Lefty” (and should be) 💯 Goooone & that “Bowels” honestly, should be too, but prob won’t be… And, YOU BELIEVE ‘IN’ the “status quo” and just keeping it the same. NOT A BIG-Deal. To ME, anyways. Hell, I just didn’t know wth you were even ‘talking about,’ at FIRST!!!!

  20. MelvinJunior Says:

Wanting a ‘change’ & expecting ‘better’ does NOT make ME a “BAD Fan,” DCBUCSFN.

  21. Roc Says:

Ummm WHAT ABOUT THW HEAD COACH

    Buck stops at the Leader

Except we don’t have a leader

The Bucs will fire Leftwich to keep Bowles BUT fans expect more of the same

BOWLES has shown what he is LOSER

  22. DungyDance Says:

It’s already after midnight. So has Leftwich been fired yet?

  23. Eric Says:

I hate to say it but Bowles was average to below average as a head coach and DC! I will be shocked if Byron is calling plays in the NFL next year!

  24. John Dixon Says:

This team will be pure crap as long as Bowles is the head coach. Byron will be a winning head coach somewhere else. Bryon is a winner and has done very well until the constant loser became the head coach and forced his ideas into the offense. The wrong guy became the head coach this year, plain and simple. Now without Byron, Brady and everyone else getting older, this team will crater.

  25. Dreambig Says:

Its a mystery as to why Bowles and Leftwitch were hired in the first place (especially Bowles). Not expecting logic from the Glaziers at this point. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did not fire either one of them. I wouldn’t surprised if they blame this whole season on injuries and give Bowles one more chance to demonstrate that he is not a head coach.

  26. PassingThru Says:

Pass coverage was awful. Though much of it was coaching, bear in mind what I said 2 years ago: drafting Trask rather than CB in the second round was a colossal mistake, one that bit the Bucs in the ass for 2 years straight.

  27. SB~LV Says:

Jason should be in the mix for walking papers
He is the Captain of this ship and allowed it to pound itself into ruin on the rocks.
Bowels is NOT a head coach
Leftwhich is not even a coach!

  28. Bucs Guy Says:

The firing can’t happen soon enough. Send the message.
Armstrong (ST Coach) should be right behind him.

  29. SB~LV Says:

    Kyle Trask
    Jason????
2 round pick that contributed NOTHING
    NOTHING
    NOTHING
    NOTHING
    NOTHING
    NOTHING
Jason is responsible for allowing this season to continue
    Jason
    Todd
    Byron
    Bye bye !!!!

  30. NEfan Says:

Firing Leftnut isn’t exactly cutting the snake off at it’s head.

  31. Kenny Says:

NOT the best feeling after the Bucs lose bad to the cowboys, but it wasn’t there year, they need some coaching changes FAST and if i was a betting man, I don’t think you will see TB12 in Tampa next season, I say take that 10yr FOX DEAL worth over 300 million plus and do that.

  32. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Fire Licht, Bowles and Leftwich, and start over!

  33. Davenport Says:

MelvinJunior — go away. We don’t need your litter on this board. And, please, in the future posts elsewhere, type like a grown man.

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We will have to assume that Brady would not want Leftwich to return……you could….fire Leftwich and then tell Brady, if you come back you can pick your OC.

The “run coordinator” coach is history…..and ST.

I suspect it would be a good idea to move on from BA also…

If they are keeping Bowles….let him have a clean slate with his coaches.

  35. Biggun Says:

BL needs to go for sure, I can’t for the life of me see how Brady went along with this Offence calling all year… But I can also say I truly think TB12 personal life did dramatically impact his performance… He needs a new steady ASAP. I for one would love for him to return we need some fresh blood and some savy vets added or O-Line needs shoring up. We need additional help in the secondary rotation. A-BUC-4-LIFE!

  36. Todd Bowles resume Says:

Byron needs to go along with these overreactions to fire Licht.

Grow the Phuck up you keyboard jockeys.

We had no shot all year.

  37. Iron-Wombat Says:

    don’t stop with Leftwich.

  38. David Says:

We need an apology from BA and we need to hear that B L is fired today.

That should have happened several weeks ago and BA should’ve been the interim

  39. Jmarkbuc Says:

    SBLV

ABSOLUTELY agree. Enough of JLICHT standing around with his di*k in one hand and a Bud Light in the other. He’s been riding coat tails for the last four years. He was about to be run before BA came along, and he’s still the same inept clod.

  40. jughead1 Says:

Joe, did you forget to add Todd Bowels to your title of this article? And for that matter Jason Licht? Neither have ever built anything. The Glazers need to make a financial decision here and understand that if Bowels and Boron are here next year, they are going to go back to a 50% stadium for home games.

  41. Ugotrobbed Says:

Sean Payton = Keeping Tom Brady .

  42. Panhandle Buc Says:

According to PFF – BL was just fired.

  43. Ugotrobbed Says:

@ DCBUCSFN – OH! So you know everyone commenting here are Floridans do you!? Arrogant northerners!

  44. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    FIRE BOWLES NOW

  45. FrankFooter Says:

Finally, we can get rid of Leftwhich and Brady. They both suck. (And for you cheerleaders of Brady, maybe we watched different games. he’s just bad).

  46. FrankFooter Says:

Bye! Bye! lefty. We need pros out there that can speak english.

  47. NEfan Says:

FrankFooter@ we all know where your foot is, up your arse.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I’m against tanking.

You don’t change the culture and then tank. It sends the wrong message to the team.

So far as Jason Licht, firing him would be a HUGE mistake. Arians likely gave Bowles his word that he would be his successor to get him as DC. It was worth it.

Licht built a superbowl winning team. He brought in Arians. He helped him assemble the right staff. He brought in Brady, resulting in a Superbowl, 2 playoff appearances and a division win. He built one of the best starting offensive lines in the league (injuries and the retirement of Marpet ruined it this year).

Arians was the first time the Glazers gave Licht the lead in hiring, and they got lots as a result. They need to tell him “clean slate” and trust him again.

  49. The Anomaly Says:

    TOTAL ORG FAILURE

  50. The Anomaly Says:

@bonzai – Licht is trash – Brady brought in everyone not Licht. He chose us. Licht didn’t choose Brady. GMAFB. Licht is one of the worst GM’s in Bucs history.

He was a total loser this year in the offseason.

  51. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The Anomaly, you are more than welcome to your opinion.

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Panhandle Buc Says:

According to PFF – BL was just fired.

    .

    I don’t see it. Tease.

  53. SKBucsFan Says:

Now would be a good time ti getvrid of coaches. But neither Licht or the Glazers have the kahunas to fire Leftwich. All senior coaches need to go. And they can take Licht with them. He is responsible for this mess.

  54. BRYAN KOHN Says:

    Bye Left Rich! (snort)

  55. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Well I was hoping to get a present under the tree this morning, but I guess I’ll have to wait a bit. Flush the turd.

  56. Goatfarmer Says:

Why haven’t the firings commenced? Glazerlicht is going to drown in Bowels of Toad and Leftbus.

  57. Kidfloflo Says:

Losing Leftfoot is justified and expected, but our Defense last night with the same coach from dominating the Super Bowl 2 years ago , was abysml and inexcusable….what the hell happened

  58. Jack Sparrow Says:

If these 2 moron stay, no Veteran QB nor a RB would want to go here. This team is a dumpster fire with these 2 bozos running the show.

  59. Goatfarmer Says:

Jack you are being cruel to dumpster fires.

  60. vadertime Says:

Fire Bowles too. Make it a two-for-one deal. Clean house and start over. Without Brady in the house we don’t have a QB that we can build around. Might as well get rid of them all and start over. Fire Bowles too. Go Bucks.

  61. Davenport Says:

    WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG???

  62. Zippy Says:

There are likely some very good coaches who could be our OC. Question is, if Brady is not returning (don’t think he will,) we don’t have an NFL startinng quarterback to make the job really attractive.
