After Claiming To Mostly Misrepresent Himself, Tom Brady Says He Values Authenticity

January 31st, 2023

Interesting and passionate chatter from Tom Brady last night.

Joe cracked a Bromosa from Big Storm Brewing Co. and settled in with Brady’s Let’s Go! show on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio.

Sports media icon Stephen A. Smith was a guest and he ranted about how being real is a key to his success and critical to lasting impact and respect. “There’s a level of authenticity that everybody is owed,” he said.

Joe wondered how Brady would react, considering what he said on HBO after joining the Bucs and winning a Super Bowl.

Here’s an excerpt of that 2021 commentary.

“What I say vs. what I think are two totally different things,” Brady said. “I would say 90 percent of what I say is probably not what I’m thinking, which is challenging. I really admire people that actually can do that and say what they think because they invite a lot of other things into their life. I think there’s part of me that doesn’t like conflict. So in the end, I just always try to play it super flat. …”

On Monday, Brady sounded like he regrets being a phony with the media — perhaps because he’s soon to join the media.

“You know, I think the authenticity is a great point,” Brady told Smith. “I think that’s, you know, showing up to be who you are, and you don’t have be someone that you think people want to hear. When I see Charles Barkley, who I absolutely love and adore, he does the same thing. Shaq does the same thing. I mean that show Inside the NBA is unbelievable because everybody does [authenticity]. You know, it’s fun to watch even as athletes. … You throw some bad passes, you deserve to hear about it. At the end of the day, it’s entertainment for all of us. And sports are entertainment. That’s what we’re here for is to entertain people.”

Yeah, Joe thinks Brady was dropping a little more BS last night. Does anyone believe Brady really sees himself as an entertainer, or as a guy worthy of criticism?

Joe wants Brady to return to the Bucs. He’s an excellent quarterback and he’ll play for less than his value. And remember, the Bucs believe Brady’s mere presence helps the franchise long term because of the influence of his work ethic.

After listening to Brady last night, Joe wonders if Brady will be authentic with Bucs fans about his next big football decision, whatever that may be.

His next big football decision shouldn’t involve the Bucs (unless it’s a one year decision that can help reduce his salary cap hit). Bucs need to move Wirkfs to left tackle, Move D Smith to left guard, draft or sign a FA OT, clean house of as much of the old guys we can without too much cap hit, trade for or sign/draft a FA mobile QB (Lance, Hooker, Huntley, Love) and get on with it. While their at it, move D White to OLB and draft/sign a MLB. Brady isn’t a long term solution for the Bucs on the field. At best a one year bridge.

There it is! I understand and totally agree with that statement. I also agree that the Bucs will have a better opportunity to win with Brady than without him.

Sadly I just cannot support him playing anywhere. I think he’s a decent human being, raised by great parents, and he is trying to do the same for his kids. He needs to get out and just let it go.

If I have one regret for Brady its that he didn’t play it as smart as Peyton Manning. Peyton won at Denver and went out on top. TB12 could have enjoyed a fairytale ending bringing his amigo from NE and closing out his career literally in storybook fashion. Takes a sorry team to the SB in their own stadium. He could have never topped that!

I get his addiction to the game but instead of seeing him hoist that trophy at RayJay I’ll always have that image of the horrible end zone int to virtually end the Bucs chances.

The odds of Brady and the Bucs winning the SB are very long, some of our gamblers could give us the odds when they open in Vegas…perhaps they already have. There is no more glory for Brady, just mediocrity and that’s truly sad.

But hey it’s America and if he needs another snort of his addiction and doesn’t mind risking his noggin…rock on Tom. Different strokes for different folks!

  3. ModHairKen Says:

Joe, don’t be such a goober. He’s talking about how he talks to the media. And I don’t blame him a bit because every adjective and verb he uses is overanalyzed and shoved up his a$$. Your article is proof of that.

  4. DungyDance Says:

I don’t think we should be tip toeing around, worrying about scaring Brady off. Firmly list our demands. If you want to stay, tell us by x date, and here’s the most we will pay (which should be a steep discount, say half or so). Whether or not he plays with us next year, we’re not going anywhere. Way too many holes, especially on defense. Enough of this nervous wimpy crap, pacing around waiting.

  5. Jmarkbuc Says:

    SPBF

His influence was felt the first year. But honestly, it doesn’t appear to me that this team is ever prepared or putting in Brady type work.

  6. Go Bucs Go Says:

stpetebucfan, rest assured. Brady will correct that lasting image.
The question is where he will chase the 8th ring.
Right now, 49ers is the first bet.

    Go Bucs!

  7. Go Bucs Go Says:

Jmarkbuc, this team bought into Brady’s way in the first year. It worked wonder of winning SB on first shot.

Yet, the success is HARD TO SUSTAIN in any profession. Look at LA Rams this year after winning SB last year. They fell on their face.

I feel sorry for those who keep harping that Brady has gradually sucked from the late 2021 season. In my honest view, he was THE ONLY DETERRENT of such collapse. Remember how our WR corps fell apart left and right toward the end of 2021 season and Brady carried the team as far as he could to the tune of tying up 27-27 in divisional playoff game against eventual SB winner.

    This year…!?! No comment.

    Go Bucs!

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can an NFL team waive tampering?…..I don’t think so, but they should be able to allow it.
If the Bucs could waive tampering with Brady….it would expedite his decision one way or another……time is the Bucs enemy in this situation.

  9. Hodad Says:

Problem is even if Brady comes back the question of when will it end is a distraction. As good a leader as Tom was it’s hard to follow a guy with one foot out the door. He left them during training camp. He left them to go to a wedding. They know he could be gone even if he comes back. It didn’t work this year, it won’t work next year, it’ll be worse. If Tom doesn’t have the sense to let it go, the Bucs should. Please give it up, time to turn to the future.

  10. ChiBuc Says:

Honeymoons are always great! Afterward, all the bullsh!t starts to be revealed. The bucs, the fans, and the town are well beyond the honeymoon phase with this man.

  11. Allbuccedup Says:

Meanwhile while Brady decides what he is going to do nothing gets done. I disagree about his motivational ability on this team it has completely worn off. If thats the case the head coach has got to motivate the players but Bowles is not a motivator.

  12. Go Bucs Go Says:

Hodad, I agree with you on the part that his commitment this year was somewhat suspicious after Dolphins tampering and personal matter of s$:t happening in his 40s. I give you that. He went through a lot of stuff this year that he had never experienced in his life before.

But if he decides to come back even after all he went through this year, he will come back here FULLY DEDICATED AND MORE DETERMINED LIKE NEVER BEFORE. I truly believe that. Time to him at this point in his career is precious commodity that he has no intention to waste. He will go all-in. He does not play to play, but to WIN.

    Go Bucs!

  13. Paratrooper Buc Says:

    @go Bucs go

I agree that he goes to 49ers. Makes so much sense minus the kid situation. But even if he retired and did the announcer gig, he would still be traveling on weekends. I say he goes to 49ers for 1 year. Brock can learn under him and Brady has a crazy good chance to get ring 8. And if Gronk joined him knowing he wouldn’t be a workhorse but an extra weapon then barring any major injuries I see them getting to nfc championship and the SB.

    Future gm’s in these comments

  15. Old black man Says:

This city a holds one single player over and above the entire organization. Shameful! Tom shouldn’t come back to this loser team… He’s too good for this team. All of you people turn in your Bucs cards NOW. Go sleep on Tom Brady’s front porch. Real fans will still be here with or without Tom. You Brady humpers make me vomit.

  16. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I wonder if we could release him so he can legally figure out what he wants to do and let us know before the start of free agency.

  17. Go Bucs Go Says:

    Paratrooper Buc, yes, yes, yes.

Being close to kids in my opinion is overplayed. At least playing for his dream team before his parents outweighs that at this point. He recently chose football over kids and Gisele. Let that sink in. Besides, Gisele is there to care for kids. And kids are already all grown up. Playing for 49ers is once in a lifetime. Family matter to him is overrated.

    Go Bucs!

  18. SB~LV Says:

Brock ain’t learning nuthing from Brady, he’ll be lucky to play again

  19. Jack Clark Says:

Brady Translation: “This is Chess, not Checkers”

  20. NEfan Says:

SB~LV could be right, the surgery he needs is equivalent to Tommy John’s. This kids future may have just passed him by.

  21. NEfan Says:

Someone brought up a good point. If Bucs release him, can he talk to other teams?

  22. Go Bucs Go Says:

If Brady is released, he is no longer under any contract obligation with Bucs. Hence, no tampering in talking to other teams before free agency in March. Technically, he’d be a FREE free agent.

    Go Bucs.

  23. Cobraboy Says:

Brady may be “authentic” with teammates, but not with the public.

@SB~LV: apparently, the surgery is not so bad for a QB vs. a baseball pitcher, since the throwing motion is substantially different.

But 6 months off from the NFC Championship game date does not bode well for a full recovery well before TC.

It could open the door for a one-year Brady rental in SF so Purdy can recover fully and learn under thee GOAT.

That said, I don’t know the 9er cap situation.

  24. NEfan Says:

If that’s the case GO Bucs@ Bucs should do exactly that. They gain nothing by hanging on to his rights for the next 5 weeks. I believe the Raiders did that with Carr. Listening to GMFB this morning, talking about Brady to the 9ers. Kyle Grant’s opinion was if 9ers want to go for it all pick the better QB, Roger’s. I almost spit out my coffee. What did Roger’s do this season to give anyone the idea he is better than Brady? This guy is supposed to be this great QB yet he’s been in one and won only one SB. The ultimate loser. He would fit in with Bowles.

  25. Go Bucs Go Says:

    NEfan,
Brady camp is already in talks with several teams interested in his service next season. Tampering or not. Everyone does it. You just need to be careful not to get caught or pray that someone involved does not leak out.
That is why I strongly believe Brady will let Bucs organization know his decision well before free agency in March. He clearly expressed his great appreciation of his time here and will act in such way to reflect that.
Kyle in GMFB really chose Rodgers over Brady??? Wow… what an idiotic comment. 49ers players admire Brady as shown in the postgame when we got blown out whereas 49ers love to hate and beat Rodger-led Packers. Aaron Rodger is not a good fit in 49ers. They need a clutch QB, not an Uber talented player right now.

    Go Bucs!

  26. Cobraboy Says:

@NEFans: In their prime, Brady may be better than Rogers. Maybe.

But now, today, age and mileage considered, IMO Rogers > Brady. At least he’s mobile and not as scared of getting hit.

Rogers has a lot more tread than Brady.

  27. sasquatch Says:

    Brady Brady Brady

    Blah blah blah.

  28. lambchop Says:

    @Hodad,

The Bucs sucked cuz BA left, not Brady. The house was left in charge to a bunch of nitwits. Yes, Brady had a huge distraction as far as a divorce is concerned-not because he had one foot out the door. Tom Brady has never been about anything but winning, but Brady can’t be the only one who goes the extra mile. It’s been said he didn’t like the effort going into practice.

Does anyone think Brady needs more practice for himself? Going for a wedding and a short span in training camp (to sort out his personal life) is not the reason why the team regressed for an entire season.

  29. NEfan Says:

Cobra, Roger’s isn’t afraid to get hit? Did you miss the 2020 playoff game when he could have easily scored yet threw it to a covered Adam’s? He has done that multiple times this season as well. I’ll take proven winner over a proven loser any day.

sastwat@ I hope you have to listen and read about him for the next 5 weeks before he tells the Bucs to shove it.

  30. Kenny Says:

why is this QB situation taking so long?????? come on Tom just say it, u coming back or you moving on? plus we NEED to move forward with a OC position!!!! hurry up and let’s Gooooooooooooooooo

  31. SB~LV Says:

If I was Brock Purdy I would take the whole year off and come back in 2024

  32. Cobraboy Says:

@NE: Brady is close to done. Rogers is not.

I like Brady but his future is limited, maybe a year. Rogers has a lot of tread left.

The play you referred to does NOT show by any stretch of the imagination Rogers is afraid to get hit. You have no clue if he thought he could score. None. Pure speculation on your part. Nope. Nada. It shows he has a lot of trust in Adams…for good reason.

And we have a huge body of evidence Brady is afraid to get hit.

BTW your user name shows you have bias. Clearly, you’re not a Buc Fan Life Inmate.

  33. Infomeplease Says:

As far as Roger’s or Brady go. Roger’s is an accurate passer, a bit more mobile, maybe as far as mechanics go he’s better!! But he’s not a true winner!! He puts himself over his team every time!! He’s had numerous opportunities to get into the SB and put rings on his fingure but has only 1!! Then there’s TB12!!!!!! True winners figure out how to win the big games!!! Brady has the proof!!!! Brady has better intangibles and in a talented league that is the difference between winners and losers!!!!

  34. BuckyPhillips Says:

Cobraboy just spitting fact after fact

  35. biff barker Says:

Brady will be gone before the new offense gets installed. Turncoat Tommy needs to go.

Lets quit wasting time. Tampa Bay has become the NFL’s nursing home

Sink or swim for Trask. If he sinks, he’ll pass Bowles on the way down or on the way out.

  36. Kenny Says:

One more YEAR with TB12!!!!!!!! LET’S DO THIS.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Regardless of what you do, you can value authenticity in other people, nothing odd or misleading about that. He didn’t say he isn’t a hypocrite, best of my knowledge.

Anywho, back to his harem of 22-year old Brazil supermodel strippers.

  38. Redeemer Says:

It comes from years of belichick telling him to say nothing. Bill hates the media with the power of 1000 suns. He blamed them for turning on him in Cleveland when he was much more affable for cripe sake he benched welker for making a foot joke about rex Ryan. I think you lose a bit of yourself when you can’t be genuine. Brady was much more loose when he came here, but 20 years of brain washing is hard to overcome.

  39. NEfan Says:

Cobra, winner over LOSER every time.

The NFL season isn’t even over yet.

    Taking so long?

    Get a grip dude.

  41. stpetebucfan Says:

    What Cobra said!

  42. NEfan Says:

stp, you think Brady is drama and you want Karen Roger’s? With theses coaches he would have quit on the team in week 5 and took his $50M check with him.

  43. Bojim Says:

Brady needs to make up his mind soon. We need an OC and candidates probably wanna know.

  44. Crickett Baker Says:

I thought just like you did, Redeemer, re Bell’s brainwashing. And why everyone wants Tom to decide–he hasn’t even had a chance to see what other teams are offering and carefully consider his many options. I would love for him to stay with us and have a much better year. If wishes were horses, beggars would ride, but, I can’t think of any other QB I would want this year. I also have little faith in Bowles’s pick for a good OC. Brady will maybe be the only thing that makes the team interesting to watch this year. Please stay Tom and GO BUCS!

  45. LastDance Says:

I like Kyle Brandt but this is a dummmazz take. Rogers has never been better than Brady at winning and still is NOT! Also, he makes like 55 million a year and Brady will do it for rock bottom because he cares more about winning. As long as the number appears respectable, he doesn’t care. he has 380 million waiting on the other side of playing. The 49ers still have to manage the cap if they want to keep the best roster in football. Rodgers won’t help them win on the field or on the books
