Wakeup Call For Carlton Davis

December 18th, 2022

Bucs CB Carlton Davis.

For the Bucs to have a prayer today, they likely will need a couple of big plays from their defense.

So who’s it going to be? The Bucs are down big-time players like Vita Vea, Shaq Barrett, and their top ballhawk cornerback, Jamel Dean.

Pro Bowl safety Antoine Winfield also might miss another game with a bad ankle and emerging veteran edge rusher Carl Nassib also is sidelined with a bad pectoral muscle.

Joe would point to big-money cornerback Carlton Davis trying to lock down all-world Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who has 478 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns — in his last four games.

Considering Davis hasn’t has an interception since opening day of the 2021 season (yes, 2021), Joe has given up on expecting a turnover from Davis today. But it sure would be nice to hear him talked about after this game as a top-10 cornerback again.

Davis has the skills and the experience to do a damn good job on Chase, and he certainly should be jacked up for the challenge.

Talented studs on the Bucs roster must step up eventually, Joe hopes. And everything about this game says it’s Davis’ turn.

Doubt he’ll be able to answer the call……

  3. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

We will need the whole team to play above their heads for a win this week.

I love the optimism, but I sure as heck don’t share it. I think that Davis is overrated and I don’t think he’s anywhere close to a top ten corner. Getting picks is in his job description, but he only has six in the 5 years that he’s been in the league. Sad.

  5. Crickett Baker Says:

Let’s support them and hope they can!

  6. kyle Says:

we still dont have a lockdown corner on this team..

  7. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

He may have been talked about as a top ten corner, but not by any serious people. He’s never even been top 20, forget top 10.

  8. TheBucsAnthem Says:

These Bucs will lose by atleast 3 scores today….so pathetic this team is.

Carlton is a good player at a very tough position to man. We need to stop expecting him to be some kind of superstar. He is not. Davis isn’t even the best DB on this team Heck, he’s been out-performed by Jamel Dean for most of the last two years when Dean’s been healthy. Bruce Arians said during his first season, “If a DB can’t play the ball, he can’t play”. This team still is in need of a lockdown corner who can stay on the field. Accept Carlton for what he is. A nice #2 on a team that has always lacked a shutdown #1.

When I watch Chase, I understand why he was the number one at LSA over Justin Jefferson. A bit thicker, stronger, faster, bigger. Just unreal. But, as annoying as Jefferson can be (idk maybe it’s his face and stupid dance) but Jefferson might be the best route runner I’ve ever seen. It is clear that he works really hard, and he’s tough as nails. Both unreal. I guess my point is this, I love mike evans. Greatest buc receiver ever, but when I watch two guys like that I feel like we’re far from that kind of number one with that short area quickness to go with long speed, precise route running and YAC. Not to mention a true number one getting 15 looks a game. 10 catches for like 150 yards or whatever feels like a normal game for Jefferson or chase. Evans is so sooooooo far removed from that. Some of it is Brady and some of it is the fact that Evans game isn’t as well rounded. I do not wanna hear about spreading the ball around. It’s a cop out. A true number one gets the ball. Period. End of story. Get your best players the football

Shocking fact. I have as many interceptions as he does!!!! Think about it!

  12. Mason Says:

Top 10 is a reach for really any point of his career, Dean has come out as our more reliable cover guy imo.

  13. D-Rok Says:

I was bummed when Gilmore went to the Colts.

I hope Davis plays great today, but I doubt he will.

    GO BUCS!!!

  14. Greg Says:

Rest assured, Carlton will allow a nice 10 yard cushion, zero press and a pillowy soft tackling style. The guy is a joke IMO.

  15. Power of Pewter Says:

Davis is a good CB, but if Bucs don’t get a pass rush Joe Burrow will have all day to torch Bucs secondary. Niner’s rookie 6th round pick 3rd string QB put up 35 pts on the Bucs. Can the Bengals get 50?

  16. Lakeland Steve Says:

Davis is not a top 10 corner. Davis is the Diet Coke of great corners, just one calorie not good enough.

  17. firethecannons Says:

way way over rated rank not in the top 30

  18. Bucsfan61 Says:

Lets just pray we have a good game…GO BUC’S

  19. 97 bucBaby Says:

We suppose to have let this guy walk. One thing I say Jason has to become better at cause Carlton and a couple others didn’t deserve those contracts

  20. TheBucsAnthem Says:

At one point CDIII was the most consistent DB on the team……now, his play has fallen off a cliff this season.
