Turnovers Hurt Bucs In More Ways Than One

December 21st, 2022

Todd Bowles responds.

Yeah, the Bucs played Santa Claus last Sunday night and the Bengals took advantage and blew them out, rallying from a two-touchdown deficit.

In the first half, the Bucs ran quite a few play-action passes, something failing Bucs offensive coordinator has been allergic to using despite Tom Brady excelling at play-action (and Leftwich has confessed he doesn’t know what play-action passes are during has waste-of-time press conferences).

So why did Leftwich pretty much quit using play-action passes in the second half Sunday night? It’s a subject Bucs coach Todd Bowles tackled today.

Bowles said the Bucs would have continued to keep using play-action passes in the second half, provided they had the ball. Remember, Brady channeled Mr. Entertainment, Jameis Winston, and outdid him with four turnovers on successive possessions.

Jameis never did that.

“I don’t think we got away from it,” Bowles said when asked about play-action. “I think the ball got turned over so early, we didn’t get a chance to get back to it.

“I think the four turnovers happened in about 11 or 12 plays, so by that time, you’re kind of out of everything to even try to get into something. It just didn’t work out that way.”

That’s a fair observation. But what about running a hurry-up? The Bucs are fire when using that but just like play-action passes, Bucs coaches for some bizarro reason do not like to run offenses and schemes that work.

You know, someone might get too tired to fly to Costa Rica next month.

Joe, I have a feeling that the Homer Website is losing clicks because nobody wants or can tolerate (sorry if being intolerant make me an enemy of the state!) listening to these coaches.
Just wanted to know (serious question) if you are losing clicks on articles featuring these genius coaches?

I know I have been avoiding them (only here cause I am one of the first to read it) and I have read almost every article you have post since the early years of of JBF

  2. CrackWise Says:

Well to be honest, I didn’t even read the article. Just came straight to the comment section. That is how much I have come to LOATH these guys.

And I was backing them 100 for most of the year. Just can’t stand hearing them or read the quotes anymore. SERIOUSLY makes me feel like I am getting dumber every time I do. AND thats saying something coming from someone like me.

    WAIT, WHAT….. DOPE!!!!

  3. Darin Says:

I guess he didn’t tackle one of the worst fake punt calls anyone will ever see. That was the first turnover toiletBo. You screwed your team before the things you speak of. Ugh why do I even read what he says anymore. This staff isn’t accountable Still. Playing trace mcsorely may save their playoff hopes. I won’t be betting on it tho. They’re terrible playing in Arz and I’ll never bet on this staff to pull one out.

  4. NEfan Says:

So why come out the first 3 series and run on 1st down??? Maybe the turnovers don’t happen if you stuck to what was working.

  5. Crickett Baker Says:

..” you’re kind of out of everything to even try to get into something”… !!!!! THIS is what a Head Coach says in the middle of a GAME??? WTF is this attitude? Why bother when your coach has given up? O m G no wonder..

  6. NYbucsfan Says:

Todd B hurts this team in more ways than one. He stinks!!!

  7. CrackWise Says:

    Crickett Baker

And the contradiction, “The ball got turned over so early…” What the heck?

So it got turned over so early that you kinda didn’t have time to make up for it later?

BRILLIANT! This is all you need to know about the logic behind the madness a OBP aka One Bozo Place!

Joe, PLEASE start hammering these clowns with some serious questions. It does not matter if you tick off the Glazers. They will come around eventually!!!

  8. Killian Says:

Gronk tweeted that he is bored…

  9. Bobby M. Says:

I genuinely believe Bowles recognizes he’s probably better suited as a DC vs HC. There’s a bit of self preservation in him worrying his defense will get tired. If his defense is routinely exposed/exploited, who would hire him other than Arians? The ultimate objective is winning….his approach isn’t doing that yet he still protects his defense.

  10. Craig Says:

An occasional turnover is not a big deal, but five of them in the first five possessions after half time show a lot.

Mainly they show a very badly coached team. What kind of halftime adjustments cause that kind of crap to happen.

Blame the team all you want, I’ll put a little blame on it, but mostly on incompetent coaching.

  11. Whoolio? Says:

Gronk is bored. Idk if it means anything but maybe for the greatest story him and Tommy have written yet. Would be crazy.

  12. D-Rok Says:

    Whoolio,

Assuming Gronk came back in shape, he and Brady might light it up once again. At this point, it’s OK to hope for such a thing – we need SOMETHING good to happen to this team!!

Not much going right this year…

  13. Jack Clark Says:

I think Todd Bowels is just a stubborn, defensive-minded coach who thinks “Defense Wins Championship” and as long as our defense keeps the opponent under 10 points then all our offense needs to do is run the ball well enough so we can run the clock out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  14. Jack Clark Says:

Bill Belichick is also a defensive-minded head coach but he had no problem letting Tom Brady break every single, significant, quarterback record in the NFL

  15. NEfan Says:

Bowles wouldn’t sign Gronk, he doesn’t fit the conservative offense.

  16. SPARKY Says:

If What Gronk is doing is boring, what is my life called

  17. Redeemer Says:

Wake me up if and when Dallas comes to town. I don’t know the permutations.

  18. Since76 Says:

I dont think the bucs coaching staff can win against a quality team with average coaches. So even if we somehow back our way into the playoffs. One and done. To me this is the worst coaching staff in buc history. All these great players and no playbook. You dont get quality teams together like we have now. And to squander it like his is just crazy. These owners are what they are culverhouses 2.0.

  19. Redeemer Says:

Dallas : 24th against the run, 3rd against the pass.

  20. Me Says:

Mr. Bowles, you unfortunately sucked in NY, you unfortunately suck in Tampa. Head coaching isn’t your thing

Bowles, leftwich and the special teams coach should all be fired
