Todd Bowles Said A “Sudden Change” To Bucs Offense By Him Would Be “Asinine”

December 29th, 2022

Todd Bowles on changes.

The mystery of the Bucs’ offense continues.

There has been a lot of chatter in recent weeks about what has happened to the once-lethal Bucs offense.

The past three years it was one of the most dangerous in the NFL. This year? It’s been a joke and under the guidance of failing Bucs offensive coordinator has had a historic dropoff.

Before training camp got going, it wasn’t exactly a secret Bowles did not want to run Arians’ no-risk-it; no-biscuit offense. He stated that type of offense wore the team down, in all three phases of the game, and that was part of why the Bucs lost to the Rams in the playoffs last season.

(What Joe doesn’t understand is how guys weren’t gassed running the same offense in 2020 despite playing more games? The Bucs won the Super Bowl that season, you may remember, pounding the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. The Bucs sure didn’t appear run down. Joe still believes it was partly the number of games played in 2020 that wore down the Bucs, not the type of offense used.)

There also has been a lot of chatter about how much of an influence Bowles has on the offense. Just on face value, it seems to be a lot.

Bowles yesterday was asked about his stamp on the Bucs this season and he made it clear if he did tinker too much with the offense, it would have been downright dumb of him to do that since the offense hummed.

“Once you take over a team that late and you keep everything in place, you have to change it gradually,” Bowles began. “To make a sudden change with a team that had success would be asinine on my part. You don’t try to coach to do things differently than your predecessor – no matter how great he was, you find tweaks along the way.

“You know it’s a different type of team and you try to tweak it along the way and make sure everybody is on the same page, and it gradually changes. You don’t try to say, ‘Here I am, right now.’ I’m the head coach, but at the same time, I have to see how everything works from my view and tweak some things along the way.

“Being here four years has helped me do that – I understand the guys a lot more and a lot better. [I’m] still tweaking some things and getting it to how we want it.”

So Bowles doesn’t exactly deny he changed the once prolific Bucs offense, just that he didn’t change a lot right away.

Frankly, Bowles should never have toyed with the offense. There wasn’t a damn thing wrong with it. Never, ever fix something that isn’t broken and the Bucs’ offense was certainly not broken.

Joe understands why Bowles didn’t want to run Arians’ offense. Joe doesn’t agree with it, but understands. Unfortunately, it appears to have blown up in Bowles’ face.

The Bucs are on the cusp of collapsing in a terrible division, despite having some of the best talents at the skill positions in the NFL and a good defense.

If the Bucs miss the playoffs, Joe sure hopes Bowles is asked by the team’s shot-callers why he insisted on monkeying with a perfectly good offense, and since it imploded, what he plans to do to get it back on track?

That’s a reasonable request.

For reasons not quite clear, it appears the Bucs’ offense truly lost its biscuits.

    Careful with that verbiage Joe.
Ron DeSantis used that same term when describing his “diverse” gubernatorial opponent and was lambasted for being Ray cyst.

  3. Leopold Stotch Says:

Imagine if we go no riskit no biskit first playoff game, and Bowles just comes out with the most smug look ever.

  4. Onetrickpony Says:

The only thing asinine is Bowels . I hope both coaches are gone for this team falling so far down the ladder

  5. firethecannons Says:

Hope Bowles never gets a chance to get the team back on track just as soon see this man jettisoned off the bow of our pirate ship! No more nonsense, he needs to retract any changes made immediately and hope to Gawd the team responds.

  6. SKBucsFan Says:

One has to think that only a SuperBowl appearance can save Bowls and Leftwhichs’ jobs. Their ineptness has caused a strong team with high expectations to flounder. If the Glazers don’t make a coaching change then the Bucs would definitely be back to their old self and we will need to become accustomed to losing…again.

  7. jb Says:

If we Lose Sunday due to his and Lefty’s offense, both Bowles and Lefty should be fired Monday morning! Why wait til the end of the season when it’s abundantly clear that the two of them make up at least 80% of what’s wrong with this team. Bowles doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing with all the rotten decisions he’s made this season. While Brady himself might be to blame for one of our losses, and the defense let us down a game or 2, the rest of our losses are directly due to Bowles and Leftwhich.

  8. douglas dallier Says:

Todd will not change his ways because his ego will not allow him to admit his approach was wrong. SORRY EXAMPLE OF A PRO FOOTBALL COACH!!!!!!!!!

Is this Coach My Scheme Reincarnate? This is Todd’s Lovie Smith impression of Head Coaching.
BY BY Coach, if you leave before the season ends, it would be nice. There might be a spark, at least more than this traveling Sh!t show that goes by the Name of the Buccaneers.

  13. August 1976 Buc Says:

There has been a lot of coaches for the Bucs since the beginning in 1976, but for me, I have not disliked a coach the way I do Todd Bowles simce RAY PERKINS, you know the Head Coach that even his wife questioned why he had the Bucs sideline always facing the sun in Tampa Stadium. Just dumb stuff. Richard Williamson was next and not good, but Ray brought out a special kind of dislike, and Todd sadly gets the same response from me. Yeah he seems to be a decent guy, but Not a good Head Coach. Not everyone is good at everything. Todd go get a defensive Coordinators job, you are in over your head.

  15. WillieG Says:

The more he talks, the more I want the Bucs to miss the playoffs. I wanted him as our next HC but now I want him gone.

  16. LakelandSteve Says:

What Bowles apparently doesn’t understand (and it’s extremely troubling) is we didn’t lose that playoff game against the Rams because of Arians no risk it no biscuit offense had everyone tired, we lost because of Bowles dumb ass defensive play call that allowed Cooper Kupp to run free through our secondary which set up the game winning field goal.

  17. SufferingSince76 Says:

The guy is a moron, plain and simple. His actions and his comments sing moron. And Bucs management are morons for letting him ruin the team. Hey, Glazers. You guys don’t care that the Bucs are the laughing stock of the league again?

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It doesn’t matter if he changed it or didn’t change it….he is the HC and he is responsible for it’s failure.

  19. Jackson Lini Says:

Are you kidding me? The only asinine thing would be to do nothing and hold to the status quo which everyone agrees has not been working. It is hard to believe that Bowles and Leftwich will be employed when this season concludes. For Bucs fans who think the team has hit rock bottom, just wait until next year when Tom Brady is playing for another team! There is absolutely no way Tom decides to return to the doomster fire that is the unmotivated, undisciplined and poorly coached Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

  20. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

lol This actually makes sense. The offense played great week one. Then Bowles fine tuned it into the beached whale we see today.

  21. NEfan Says:

And there you have it, it’s Bowles system. They lost the Rams because they were exhausted. So was his last call throwing the towel for the safty of his players? Sure looked to me like the Rams were tired. Forced Cleveland into OT, that’s not preserving your team. DR, Rod and the rest of you Bowles groupies there it is straight from the horses arse, I mean mouth. Bowles killed this team chance to dominate in 2023 and parts of Brady’s legacy. Now you know why Evan’s is pissed and Brady gravitates to BL.

  22. NYbucsfan Says:

It sounds like a lousy coach trying to save their job. Fire Todd!

  23. alton green Says:

i gotta ask……………why in Hell would anybody want Bowles as head coach? Was it his arse kicking record with the Jets? OR was it because…..never mind. If the Glazers keep him as head coach, they need to sell the team and stop embarssing Tampa Bay and fans like me in N. Virginia. I only read about half of this article. My arteries were swelling like the Incredible Hulk when he puts shorts on. I’m sure people have asked the Glazers “what’s it gonna take until you get a pair and fire all the coaches, the mascot, the cheerleaders, the ship AND last but not least the Rhodes Scholars, (really intelligent people), the fans that blame Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. Yes I think you can be fired just for being stupid. Here’s a test that says you are stupid, not ignorant. Difference? Ignorant means you’ve never been taught. Stupid? Every person that has EVER watched an NFL game East of Cabo has been screaming “FIRE HIS ARSE!!!!

  24. Aceofaerospace Says:

No acceptable excuse for ruining that offense. Fire him and leftwich.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Nice hatchet job Joe. I particularly like the allegation that this year’s team is the same as our 2020 & 2021 teams, then using that as the basis for the contention that Bowles screwed it up by messing with the offensive philosophy.

In no way, shape or form are we putting on the field anyplace close to the same quality team that we had in 2020 & 2021, especially from an offense perspective. Both of those years Bucs had relative stability in our OLine, and we certainly had a much higher level of starting talent there. Availability in 2020 & 2021:

    o D Smith: 2110 snaps – 93.53%
    o Marpet: 1887 snaps – 83.64%
    o Jensen: 2213 snaps – 98.09%
    o Cappa: 2253 snaps – 99.87%
    o Wirfs: 2256 snaps – 100%

This year, through 15 games, not only have personnel changed in 3 of the 5 positions, but availability has suffered. Both D Smith & Wirfs have been hurt much of the season; missed several games each & played hurt in a number of others.

    o LT – D Smith: 829 snaps – 76.55%
    o LG – Leverett: 627 snaps – 57.89%
    o C – Hainsey: 1083 snaps – 100%
    o RG – Mason: 1082 snaps – 99.91%
    o RT – Wirfs: 852 snaps – 78.67%

Could also say the same thing though about the WRs & the TEs. You can’t lose super-stars like Gronk (13 TDs in 2 years) & Brown (8 TDs in 2 years) without feeling the impact. And that’s before we even talk of the impact of those changes on Brady’s performance this year.

Funny thing is that last year’s Super Bowl winner, the Rams, are going through exactly the same thing as we are (they’re 5-10) and it all comes back to their OLine changes. Same exact coaching staff but major OLine changes. But hey, no problem. You’ve found a suitable scapegoat here in Bowles so press on. Rams will have to look for their own scapegoat.

  26. Alanbucsfan Says:

Nobody on the Bucs Oline could handle JJ Watt last week- injured Wirfs couldn’t block him, Hainsey couldn’t, Leverett couldn’t.
Watts was in Brady’s head the whole game and Fournette didn’t have a chance on several plays.
Yeah, just plug in some USFL OLinemen and it’s up to the coaches to “adjust”.
This season is about Bucs’ offense having alot of injuries, especially the OLine , and the loss of 3 pro bowlers on the OLine is not going to be made up by blaming the coaches for everything.
Coaches have made their share of mistakes, but this campaign to jettison the coaching staff with this depleted OLine is misguided.

  27. NEfan Says:

The chants this Sunday at BA’s induction. BA KILLED THE BUCS, BA KILLED THE BUCS, BA KILLED THE BUCS and that’s AFFIRMATIVE!!!

A sudden change???????? Hey Herman Munster it’s week 15. How many times does Tom have to lead the team down the field and win the game. You know, like he did for 20 years in New England, before you say. Wow, I guess I was wrong. NEVER…….fire him AND Forrest Gump. Here’s a good analogy. EVERY TIME I hear ANYBODY from the White House, I either mute the TV or change the channel. From Joey to Cackling Caramel to Mayor Pete Boodycall

  29. NEfan Says:

Alan, then why do they achieve when they revert back to their old ways, play action, motion and hurry up? Same guys on the line. FYI, Watt knew exactly what play the O was running, plus he has never sacked Brady in his career. The man just admitted he wants to run the O his way, a stupid coaching tactic for a DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR!!!

  30. Kentucky Buc Says:

Just watched some of the All-22. Horrific blocking. Wirfs just flat out whiffed a couple times. Goedeke got thrown like a 10 year old. The rest of the line wasn’t any better. Hurry up is Bucs only shot with this line . The D wasn’t much better. White didn’t even know where the ball was on several plays. Hell even LVD was way out of position several times. Undisciplined on both sides of the ball. This is a direct reflection on coaching. The one screen to Lenny that could’ve gone big we had three blockers , lineman mind you on one DB and let him split them to tackle Lenny. Horrific. Both sides of the ball.

  31. Alanbucsfan Says:

    NEfan-
They achieve with the hurry up because it helps the OLine. The OLinemen are getting beat, period.

  32. ClwJB Says:

Sudden change at the HC position is what we need!!!

Thank you Joe!!! Totally agree, now can we stop blaming Byron Leftwich for everything? Todd Bowels is the root cause of our offense’s “historic dropoff”

  34. Kentucky Buc Says:

I harken back to training camp. Brady left (walked out ?) then the team worked on running the ball (obviously a waste of time) for the remainder of the scrimmage. Bowles had no clue when he was coming back. Big rift happened right there on offensive philosophy.

    Conspiracy theory of the day.

  35. Goatfarmer Says:

    Just. Fire. Him.

Empty seats in RayJay will tell the whole story. There will be plenty unless the Glazers pull the trigger on Bowels.

  36. Buddha Says:

Tampa Bay fans here are not for the most part being real. We lost our best offensive lineman and our best defensive lineman- linebacker. We lost the Hall of Fame tight end. We lost our Pro Bowl guard. You lose the guard, the tight end, and the center and you think there will be no drop off? Expectations were way too high.

  37. NEfan Says:

Alan, my point is you put in a system that plays to the players strength not weaknesses (oline). Bowles isn’t adjusting even with the obvious problem right under his nose. This game is 60 minutes long, players practice and train for that same as a UFC fighter has to train for 5 minute rounds. Have you EVER heard a HC coaches entire philosophy is revolved around keeping the teams players from getting tired? 3 & outs sure as heck doesn’t help the D but it sure does keep the O fresh.

  38. mark2001 Says:

We call that being too hard headed for your own good. I can understand some tweaks and then if they don’t work, admit it and throw the tweaks away. But to keep making adjustments until it becomes one of the worst offenses in the league? Inexcusable.

  39. BOAT Says:

“I’m the head coach, but at the same time, I have to see how everything works from my view and tweak some things along the way.

The Todd Bowles’ Jets grind it out prevent offense:

    2016: 17.2 PPG
    2017: 18.6 PPG
    2018: 20.8 PPG

The Bucs’ offense in Brady’s first 2 seasons (Arians):

    2020: 30.8 PPG
    2021: 30.1 PPG

The Todd Bowles’ Bucs grind it out prevent offense:

    2022: 17.7 PPG

You know, just some minor “tweaks” here and there. That’s all…..

  40. Anonymous Says:

You had to say “monkeying around” couldn’t think of any other words huh?? Coming from a faithful reader, do better

  41. mark2001 Says:

Buddha. If we didn’t see Brady grab the offense by the scruff of the neck in the forth quarter in a number of games and hurry us up to victory, I’d admit the injuries have destroyed the Offense. But you can’t just ignore those comeback successes. There is something there that, along with a strong defensive effort, that has given us some success. Every team has injuries. The good teams find ways to win, score points, and stop opposing teams offenses.

  42. Joe Says:

You had to say “monkeying around” couldn’t think of any other words huh?? Coming from a faithful reader, do better

All Joe can say is you must have a guilty conscious because that thought never once crossed Joe’s mind. Perhaps you should be doing better, Mr. Anonymous?

  43. NEfan Says:

Buddha@ Yes but to go from 31 pts a game to 17, don’t you find that extreme? Yes the D lost players but for the most part they’ve been able to keep scoring low enough that a more potent O would be able to get a W. Belleglade identified that 70% of the passes are 10yds or shorter, which is the equivalent of a run. The minimal downfield throws are in place to keep the D honest. Why do you think Evan’s is disinterested? He’s running downfield for nothing.

    ——————————————————————–

Constantly saying the Bucs lost the Rams playoff game last season, because the defense was tired, due to the team’s offensive style, is a way to deflect the blame for the loss, off the disaster end of game blitz call, and shift the blame for the loss onto the offense.

It also creates a built in made up excuse, as to why the Bucs need to run the grind it out Jets’ offense, instead of the offense that averaged over 30 points a game the last 2 seasons.

    You know, just some “tweaks”.

  45. BucU Says:

If we lose to the Panthers again Bowles and Co are as good as gone. He’s the worst HC I have ever seen with ny own 2 eyes. It takes a special kind of idiot to destroy a team with this much talent.

  46. gotbbucs Says:

I didn’t read that as Bowles changing the offense at all. I read that as Bowles leaving the offense up to the incumbent offensive coaches.

All Bowles ever does in his post game interviews is lament the fact that they didn’t do the things on offense that they had talked about doing all the previous week.

Leftwich can’t think a step ahead without someone in his headset telling him how to. Running the same play on 2nd and 1, 3rd and 1, 4th and 1 is an arrogant highschool coaching move. He has no business running an NFL offense, never has. He can’t scheme. The previous two years was Arians offense. This is the Leftwich offense, the same offense that got Steve Wilks fired in Arizona after one year. Now look at what Steve Wilks is doing in Carolina without Sluggo calling the offense.

I don’t think Bowles is the greatest head coach in the world, but his defense is the only reason this team has a single win this year. He got saddled to a nincompoop at offensive coordinator and doesn’t have the power to fire him because daddy Arians is still in the building pulling Licht’s chains.

  47. DoooshLaRue Says:

Bowles philosophy is that it is better not to be gassed than score points. What is asinine is that he took a top offense and destroyed it in one season. This team can’t even score 20 points.

So no drastic changes before the Carolina game? That means everything is going to rely on the defense who will be gassed by the third quarter and more Brady last minute heroics. Seem like an asinine game plan to me….

Anyone that saw a Jets game from 2015-2018, recognized right away that this season the Bucs are running that same boring, outdated, dull, lifeless, predictable, pathetic offense as those Jets teams.

Bucs “fans” that defend Bowles and say the offense tanked because of Leftwich and/or Brady, either never saw a Jets game in their lives, or they are just trolling (Brady haters and/or Bowles stans).

  50. Alanbucsfan Says:

    NEfan-
Coaches have been stubborn on not using hurry up more often earlier in the game. Alot of this Coachspeak by Bowles is because he’s not going to throw individual players under the bus. Remember the 1st half of the Bengals’ game? Bucs offense looked pretty good until turnovers in 2nd half destroyed their chances. Then injuries to Smith and Wells hit and Wirfs is a shell of himself. The entire interior OLine is just not very good – below average is putting it nicely. Brady feels hurried which affects the receivers having time to get open and teams are taking away the shorter routes, plus Evans is double teamed alot. Godwin is not the old Godwin yet and they don’t have Gronk anymore. Forget last year and 2001- it’s a different team
They can beat the Panthers but they’ll have to minimize mistakes and more injuries.

  51. View from 132 Says:

Come on Joe. I’m no Bowles fan but “reasons quite unclear” is a real stretch. They lost their OFFENSIVE LINE, especially Jensen and Gronk. It is just that simple.

I think too many fans play fantasy football and forget you can have all the skill guys in the world, but the game is still blocking and tackling.

Right, which means it’s a head coaching problem, because the head coach won’t implement the hurry up, in order to help the o-line that can’t properly run block and pass protect. So it is directly a head coaching problem.

I guess no one knows asinine quite the Bucs coaching conglomerate. It’s so big nobody knows who is doing what , other than being asinine.

  61. Bucobill999 Says:

Next yr at least we won’t have to deal with all these brady d suckers they can go be saint or raiders fans and win 7-8 games again cuz hes toast

  62. HC Grover Says:

Bowles Bahamian Game Plans…they always Chonch Out.

  63. HC Grover Says:

Bowzos Job is….Postgame Analysis, Game Planning, Leading practice, Gametime decisions and adjustments. These are all his responsibility. It is not Leftys job it is BOWZO. Yet he stands like a stiff on the sideline staring in to space like a Zombie and after the game try to duck and shuffle out of blame. He is a total failure in all areas of his job.

  64. NEfan Says:

Bucblobill, oh I’ll be back to share my condolences for keeping Bowles as HC. Have any of you haters read Boats post and list of comparisons to the Jets seasons? Pretty much identical to what we’re seeing now. DR of all people, the “stats guru” turns a blind eye when his “SB Winning” DC is exposed. Andy Reid thought he could still win a SB with the same system with a dismantled oline. How did that work out? This oline CANNOT run block and hasn’t been good at it even when Jensen, Marpet, Cappa were on the team. Blaming one player is ludicrous.

  65. Joe Says:

Geez Joe, I thought for sure a man of your stature would be up on words and phrases that offend the sensitive, weak minded, insecure reader.

Joe doesn’t look or seek out racism under every rock.

  66. Tye Says:

The only thing truly ‘Asinine’ this season is thinking Todd Bowles was a good option at HC…. MOST fans new the moment the news broke that this season was going down hill….. Tanked a high scoring team quickly!

  67. gotbbucs Says:

They aren’t going to fire Bowles after one season, so those of you calling for his head can just give it up.
The coaching staff will definitely have changes, but Bowles will still be here. I’m sure the Glazers have put feelers out to check on some of the big names, but no top tier coach is going to want to start with this roster, a draft pick in the upper teens, and a salary cap in the negatives.

They don’t even need a top tier head coach. Arians was never a top tier head coach. They could just hire someone like Bill O’Brien and instantly be much better than they are under Bowles.

  69. Bucschamp Says:

Bowles need to stop tweaking and we win

  70. FortMyersDave Says:

I am with Goatfarmer; Fire Bowels, the only reason to keep him is if you are planning to tank for the numero uno draft pick in 2024.

  71. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I like Todd Bowles: The person.

I like Todd Bowles: The Defensive Coordinator.

I don’t like Todd Bowles: The Head Coach

    😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬

  72. Bucamania Says:

Bowles obviously changed the offensive philosophy from no risk it no biscuit to Marty ball so his beloved defense could get more rest. What’s asinine is he’s trying to play smashmouth football with a finesse offense. This offensive line outside of Wirfs can’t push anyone around. They couldn’t get a measly yard in 3 tries last week. Their short yardage failures are epic. A good coach plays to the strengths of his team not some outdated 1990s approach to offense. Bowles needs to go.

  73. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Bucamania

    It’s just bad coaching meng!!!!

Good coaches come up with good schemes to maximize their player’s abilities.

…..bit unfortunately for some reason no one is scheming and adjusting appropriately…….they’re just being stubborn and going with what they know.

  74. Frank Pillow Says:

Todd has ‘gradually’ worked his way towards being canned. What’s asinine at this point is keeping him around. The damage done has been catastrophic. You can’t win in this league coaching scared.

  75. BrianBucs Says:

Bowles being a defensive coordinator, he has the Bucs playing Prevent Offense

  76. Hodad Says:

    Joe, monkeys everywhere were offended.

    __

Totally agree, And they scheme to take advantage of an opponents weaknesses. Not this coaching staff. Same 6 plays every week. Just read the Bucs offense averages a paltry 7.6 points per game in the first half. Good lord.

  78. WillieG Says:

The not so sudden change from one of the best offenses in the league to one of the worst, was pretty asinine.

  79. steele Says:

So a sudden upgrade or improvement of asinine and ineffective offensive playbook and coaching is asinine.

    Okay. Says the a ss

  80. Kidfloflo Says:

So monkeys in trees playing are humaning around!?what the hell happened to this country?? Joe don’t placate to these tools, ooops I offended carpenters
