Todd Bowles Laments Bucs Not Playing Earlier In Games Like They Do In The Fourth Quarter

December 26th, 2022

Head coach Todd Bowles.

Joe has seen it enough to not need any spin from Bucs coaches. Yet that’s what came last night.

Once again, Tom Brady worked his magic late in the fourth quarter to give the Bucs a win. That’s three games now that Brady, against garbage teams, rallied in the fourth quarter to win either in the final seconds or in overtime.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles acted like this was a surprise.

“Seems like we play better in the fourth quarter,” Bowles said. “If we can transfer that over to the other three, we’d be pretty consistent.”

C’mon. Joe wasn’t born yesterday. Bowles knows damn well why his offense plays solid ball in the fourth quarter. When it is desperation time, Bowles allows failing Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich to take the shackles off and run a hurry-up, sometimes with play-action.

Both types of offense/plays are executed by Brady at a high level.

The Bucs are built to throw long. But Bowles/Leftwich think the Bucs are a power-running team. And look at the results.

Joe is tired of being Mr. Nice Guy. If Bowles cannot see that his archaic philosophy is bad for his team, then Joe has to wonder if Bowles is over his head as a head coach.

Joe’s old man once told Joe, “It’s one thing to be stubborn and another to be dumb.” The way Bowles, if you believe NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth, refuses to unleash the hounds of his offense, that’s worse than being stubborn.

And this inflexibility very well could cost his team a division title and maybe even his job after only nine months at the helm of the pirate ship.

Folks, it’s that outrageous.

Cannot argue with anything Joe has written as it is spot on. Bowels needs to look in the mirror and let TB12 do what he does best.

  2. mg Says:

So sad to see an ego of a head coach screw the fans.

  3. deiter Says:

I still want him gone no matter what happens next weekeend.

  4. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles isn’t a good HC……this is a continuation of what he did in New York. It’s who he is, good DC, terrible HC.

  5. SufferingSince76 Says:

Bowles would rather go down with the ship than admit he’s wrong and his coaching philosophy stinks. Week after week of crap football and he’s the same aggravating dolt. Thanks, Glazers. You guys suck, too.

  6. Kyle Says:

Bucs need to clean house and pay the saints for Sean payton

  7. FortMyersDave Says:

Kyle, good idea Kyle but the Aints will want compensation similar to what the Glazers paid crazy Al Davis for Chuckie!

  8. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

The Bucs have to run a lot.
It’s the only way to keeps the wolves off Brady.
With an o-line in such a mess, and knowing a qb cannot complete a pass on his back, what would Joe do?

  9. RuKa_44 Says:

Yesterday Arizona’s HC, that knows he will be gone at the end of the season, looked like a defeated man every time they showed a close-up of him on the sidelines. Still, he looked more energetic than Todd Bowles!!

This team is taking the example it gets from its leadership: a lethargic, defeated, “the sky is falling”, “staring into the void” type of vibe…

  10. Buc4evr Says:

We have been screaming hurry up all season. The worst is when always end up third and seven due to two short yardage runs and have to throw on third down. We should be in the hurry up the whole game. Use the pass to set up the run. Bowles is hard headed.

  11. Allbuccedup Says:

Their are good head coaches and bad head coaches anf Todd Bowles is a bad head coach.

  12. Goatfarmer Says:

Stupid is as stupid does, Forrest.

  13. james west Says:

two words-SEAN PAYTON, whatever it takes glazers, make it happen, and get this O line fixed, brady has still got what it takes he’s a winner, but can’t do it on his own

  14. BucU Says:

Todd Bowles sucks. Awful HC. If he isn’t fired after we get eliminated from contention there’s gonna be a mutiny. I can’t stomach to listen to his garbage anymore.

  15. Will Says:

It’s too bad that someone that’s able to ask coaches and players hard questions won’t. This coaching staff is failing and Todd needs to look in the mirror and realize he won’t be a head coach ever again if he continues to shackle the offense BUT if it’s not him, not firing BL is just as bad and he’ll be fired for that.

  16. NEfan Says:

At first I thought Brady was like F this, I cannot function in this O, then I thought he was injured possibly sick if you heard him in the presser but then I ask myself, how come when the O goes to hurry up or play action & motion pre-snap they look like they can beat any team? It is clear the O game plan is the anchor.

  17. Joshua porter Says:

Someone please tell Bowles what the red flags that they give him at the beginning of every game is for . The man is scared in everything he does except his defense it’s damn maddening

  18. Architek Says:

The more he talks the sillier he sounds. He’s not a long term fixture as HC.

  19. Just Saying Says:

Agree with Will. @Joe tired of being Mr Nice guy, why don’t you call these coaches out. Our press conferences are jokes because the pen and mic club is afraid to challenge these moronic coaches and ask the questions they type about later. What’s the matter, scared you won’t get to stuff your face on the Cuban sandwiches in the press box at halftime anymore?

  20. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

If he truly believes what he says, he’s an idiot. If he doesn’t believe it, he’s just covering for his incompetent OC. either way, pretty demotivational for he players to have this dud as the HC. They need a new HC and OC.

  21. Thomas Edrington Says:

Bucs fans LAMENT the hiring of Todd Bowels…..the Glazers should as well and do something about it when this abysmal season ends!!

  22. Richard Says:

Todd Bowles (Mr. Lethargic) needs to go. He is not HC material.

  23. SB~LV Says:

They didn’t have much camera time for Bowles last night
    Negative association avoidance
    PC

  24. Gofortheface30 Says:

It’s only archaic if it doesn’t work. Kyle Shanahan runs the same offense (or atleast the basic principles of it) as the late 90s broncos and 94 niners – two of the greatest offenses of all time, and an offense that still works, and if the 49ers had John Elway of Steve young then they would be an absolute freight train. I’m ok with old school power running, if we were built for it. Which we’re not. That is even more egregious

  25. Kentucky Buc Says:

No way in hell we’re getting Payton. The Saints aren’t cutting their own throats to help the Bucs. Puff puff pass.

  26. McBucky Says:

    Bowles is bad. Period.

  27. NEfan Says:

Gofortheface@ Seriously??? You’re comparing today’s game to the 90’s??? LB’s were bigger and slower as were D lineman. The speed and size of these players are far supior to the 90’s. Kyle Shanahan runs all motion, play action, counters, crossing /pick routes, spread line ups. You must be joking comparing SanFran to Bucs O.

  28. NEfan Says:

Go back and watch the game the O was run entirely inside the numbers.

  29. OLDE pfart Says:

Without Watt on the D ….the Bucs would have been 3 TD victors in regulation……he was a beast…..

  30. catcard202 Says:

Seems the only people that cannot see the real problem with this team are employed by the Glazers’…

  31. ClwJB Says:

Stubborn or stupid, either way he should be canned immediately – he and his OC and STC are the absolute worst at their positions in the entire league

  32. Ufcguy32 Says:

Told you the guys a moron. Ppl are now realizing he’s the worst nfl head coach in the NFL literally. Can this stubborn loser today

  33. Winny Testaverde Says:

The once likable Bowles started his rapid descent downwards in the Rams playoff game last year. He almost strikes me now as a mentally challenged fella in his sweats and 5 day briar patch beard. It’s pitiful for a franchise with TB12 on his last lap of a glorious career. It borders on malpractice. I blame you, BA. I love you…but blame you for boxing in The Bucs.

  34. Gofortheface30 Says:

NEfan – you are a moron. Nuance guy. Learn it, live it. Your superficial conclusion aside that made me bleed out of my ears aside – the POINT is that the west coast INFRASTRUCTURE, with the same philosophy that has been around for decades is being still being utilized successfully. The 49ers are a zone blocking, power running team first. This is an undeniable fact. It has been around forever, it’s “archaic” but being implemented intelligently by smart coaches that play to the strengths of the team. And your comment about the slow linebackers back then. Ray Lewis and Derrick brooks would like a word with you sweetheart – they would be far and away the best linebackers in the game today

  35. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Just wish you guys could take him to task with all of this while at his presser. It’s obvious the Glazers won’t because they get paid whether we win or lose. Ask him ” Coach are you dumb or just plain stu stu stupid??? When you’re forced to take the shackles off they play like that but when you leave them on for 3 quarters they play like crap! “

  36. Bobby M. Says:

Sean Payton is putting together a squad to go somewhere…..the Bucs canned Dungy after an NFC Championship appearance. Canned Gruden after dismal winning season, I think the Glazers will make bold moves but its got to make sense. Not sure with our cap next year and Brady being short term, who would want to come here. I think forcing Brady to come back to finish his contract when BA was going to step down and have him grind through a season where we lose 3 starters on the o-line and we dont do anything to replace them…..that’s probably rubbed Brady the wrong way. He’ll honor his contract but i dont think he comes back to these two buffoons.

  37. NEfan Says:

Gofortheface The moron is the guy that claims the 49ers are running the same O as the Bucs. Lb’s are smaller and faster like Parsons, Lenard, 49er LB, more versatile. Brooks and Lewis could not play in today’s game, too much coverage involved. Mahomes would embarrass them. Go back and play your Madden game and fantasize playing in a real game. Blo.

  38. Allen Lofton Says:

Bowles is a boring personality, and it reflects in how the Bucs plays – He’s not a leader – he’s a good defensive coach – BA should be telling the Glazers – loyalty is not a quality in selecting the Head coach in sports – The Glazers need to do what’s right

  39. Deano Says:

Buc4evr …hopefully there saving it for playoffs. “Hopefully”

  40. mark2001 Says:

Time to let the hounds loose. If that means the D has to pay a bit more because of the occasional short series, it is no worse that continual three and outs with the occasional turnover. Todd. Time to play to win.. and not rely on the occasional heroics to bail the team out.

  41. Gofortheface30 Says:

NO ONE SAID THE 49ers ARE RUNNING THE SAME OFFENSE AS THE BUCS. Dude. Oh my god. Is this happening right now? You are missing the point entirely. Again. I hope you don’t vote.

  42. Gofortheface30 Says:

And Your comment about brooks or Ray Lewis not being able to play todays game – holy f’ing hell, you gen z come stains are something else, you have no idea. Actually, I’m quite impressed at the actual level of ignorance inside of that lizard brain of yours. World class stupid comment

  43. NEfan Says:

Gofortheface, sure and Butkus, Lambert & Singletary, Romanowski could play in today’s game as well. Why are talking about the 90 49ers and 94 Broncos anyway? Did you just wake up from your somber Rip Van Winkle? Bottom line, the offense does NOT fit the players skillset and it obvious when they are forced into hurry up mode. Where did you get your site name? Was it given to you by your boy toy?

  44. Day 1-76 Says:

Say what you want, but Bowles is the best coach possible to get us into a position to draft our franchise quarterback of the future.

  45. BOAT Says:

At this point, it’s amazing that Bruce Arians isn’t taking any real heat from the media, over his recommending Bowles to be the Bucs’ head coach. Arians himself claims he wanted Bowles to take over and it was his succession plan. So why is the media giving him a total pass for that?

Bowles was a disaster head coach with the Jets, and somehow it seems that he managed to even be worse now.

  46. The Anomaly Says:

Why would you sign this interim coach for 5 years?

    Jason Licht…that’s how.

Licht is one of the worst GMs in Buc history

  47. captivajim Says:

bowles is one stubborn moron .

  48. captivajim Says:

    bowles is one stubborn moron

  49. BucU Says:

    What Jim said.

  50. Gerry Says:

I don’t know what you all are looking at during the game. Brady goes 3 and out must of the game which makes the defense come right back in with no rest. Brady has been missing his receivers badly. Everyone loves to blame the coach but the last time I looked the coach isn’t on the field playing. Get back to the real problem Brady is afraid to get hit and throws the ball away, under throws and over throws his receivers but that’s the coaches fault. I only have one thing to say to Joe if you can’t see that maybe you need to look for a different job
