Rumblings Of Brady, Bucs Wanting Byron Leftwich Out

December 12th, 2022

Byron Leftwich.

Joe has caught this rumbling — directly and indirectly — in a couple of ways over the past month. But Joe is first typing it here because a noted NFL insider is saying it today.

Former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn is a busy guy for FOX calling college football games, but he’s also been a longtime NFL analyst for CBS. And Joe routinely sees Quinn at the NFL Scouting Combine talking to all kinds of NFL power players, including in February of this year.

So Joe was intrigued to hear Quinn today on FOX Sports Radio calmly talk about how Bucs honchos wanted Leftwich to leave in January so Brady could have more power.

“From what I’ve heard, they were hoping maybe Byron Leftwich would get a head coaching job so Brady could have more control over things as far as playcalling goes. He hasn’t been overly impressed with that,” Quinn said. “So maybe that’s part of it; there’s some frustration there [with Leftwich playcalling].”

This sort of jibes with yesterday’s report of Brady changing up the offense the night before games and not sharing tweaks with coaches, though Bucs head coach Todd Bowles threw cold water on that today at his news conference.

Regardless, Quinn said it’s finally time to say Father Time is catching up to Brady because of his continued missed throws and how much different he looks from one year ago.

Joe agrees that Brady appears to be declining, but Joe thinks Brady has plenty in the tank to lead the Bucs to impressive heights if the running game wasn’t the worst in the NFL (yards per carry and total yards) and the playcalling was better.

If Brady really does want Leftwich out of his way, then that would be a very easy decision for Joe to make. ‘Byron, here’s a Hooters gift card and a two-month vacation rental in Lake Buena Vista.’

  1. gotbbucs Says:

Brady can’t consistently push the ball down the field anymore with any kind of accuracy.

  2. tampabuscsbro Says:

Yeah gotbbucs, I guess when he tries to air it out the issue is he can be inaccurate sometimes after the blown up screen and run up the middle for no gain on the downs before he tries that on third and long.

Who are you going to give the benefit of the doubt, the GOAT or an average to mainly horrid OC?

  3. D-Rok Says:

Brady isn’t the only one who wishes for a better OC.

  4. Architek Says:

Leftwich should’ve been out, are you kidding me!!! Seriously…I don’t know what else we need to see.

  5. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    I think Brady is injured.

  6. SufferingSince76 Says:

How can you possibly say Brady is the problem when he doesn’t trust his line to protect him or his receivers to get open? A declining Brady is still better than any QB this team has ever had. Give the man a chance and then take your shots at him if he still doesn’t improve. Until then, you are talking nonsense.

  7. SufferingSince76 Says:

I meant to add: don’t tease us like that, Joe.

  8. BucfaninMi Says:

    True. @ suffering

  9. tampabuscsbro Says:

Pretty much 76. Didn’t know there were this many Jay Miss fanbois and Brady haters around on what is mainly a website with real fans.

  10. BucfaninMi Says:

    True.@ Suffering

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Leftwich odds of getting a HC interview 100%

Lefwich odds of getting a HC job……ZERO

Tom might stay if Leftwich is gone and he has control of the offense….

His chances of finding another team are not as good as they were….

“Byron, we’d love to hire you but our goal is to score points and win football games”

A shame because I wanted the comp picks.

  12. Kyler Murray’s XBox Says:

Lions have more heart than us. We play empty and unmotivated. That is coaching. We play predictable and scared. Coaching.

We aren’t ready to show up like Gage said. Coaching.

  13. Woodenman Says:

I would say 13 games is a good chance?

  14. Rod Munch Says:

If Brady really wants him out, then please for the love of God just say so, and this bum Leftwich would be gone within the hour.

It’s clear this idiot Leftwich is killing the team this year – and Brady needs to use some of his power to make a change as Bowles, clearly, doesn’t have any say in the personnel he was handed as a condition of taking the job.

  15. Will Says:

As far as Brady pushing the ball downfield it seems as though they just need to adjust the spot. Meaning he needs to throw it sooner and maybe he’ll stop under throwing the deep ball. Although on the shot early to Evans his arm looked fine. Scotty continues to out run Brady’s arm this year and he’s terrible at coming back for the ball to cause the PI call. He continues to run instead of stopping and jumping into the defenders chest forcing the PI call. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s my thoughts on it.

But I don’t get if they were hoping Byron got a HC gig and they wanted him gone seems as though the way the offense has looked they have enough reason to let him go. Unless they don’t want to upset BA or something. Here come all the comments about the owners afraid to fire a Black coach. And to them I say look at how many this team has had compared to the rest of the league these are the last owners that should be afraid of that type of backlash. Dungy, Raheem, Lovie and now Bowles they have nothing to be scared of.

  16. HC Grover Says:

This is the Bowzo Camp trying to shift blame. Bank it.

  17. HC Grover Says:

Bowzo knows if Lefty is run off he will be too.

  18. jehzsa Says:

“Don’t throw the brady out with the bathwater.”

  19. Yucs2Bucsr Says:

@RodMunch do you have season tickets or have any money tied up to the Bucs or do you just watch them on TV and buy merch ? How can you say to the people that have been dropping 1200 a game for 15 years bandwagon fans ? It was a fun couple of years, but because after this season and really after last weeks lucky win I stopped watching and sold the rest of my tickets because I’m not giving the Glazers anymore of my money. I got full price for the Bengals game and the last two got 70 percent, but just because people are done financing this loser team doesn’t mean they are bandwagons. I wish I could just watch on tv, but if you spent money year after year like we have and stayed with them through the horrible times and then this I don’t think you would be calling people bandwagons. I’m assuming you aren’t a season ticket holder( be thankful !!) because during every game you are posting 15 -20 times. That’s cool and wish the $1200 for my stadium club seats went elsewhere.. I will be you $200 and give you 5-1 odds they don’t make the playoffs

  20. Yucs2Bucsr Says:

We aren’t fair weather fans and maybe what I think you meant is we are over it and the best way to show the organization we are done is taking money out of their pockets !!!

  21. Waterboy Says:

I don’t believe it because if Brady really wanted more control over the offense and BL out he could’ve easily made that a condition of his return and you best believe Leftwich would have been out. I think Brady already has full control over that offense and Leftwich is learning his system along with others.

  22. Bobby M. Says:

They said the same when Brady left NE….he was done, on the decline, etc. Our line blows and OC is even worse. WRs get zero separation in the 2.1 seconds Brady has to make a throw.

  23. mg Says:

    Brady to the Raiders

  24. robert Says:

“Some things I don’t give a f— about, at this point,” Brady told the San Francisco Chronicle’s Michael Silver when asked about his decision to skip out on a post-game shower. “F— that. I’m going home.”

  25. Ed Says:

The Bucs have to make their plans RIGHT NOW to get Leftwich out of the building and in the off season bring in a new HC that has imagination and isn’t a retread.

Brady isn’t the future any more and based on the horrific offense the Bucs have been running its 100% that Tom Brady cannot excel in this type of offense.

His timing is off. At the beginning of the season he was overthrowing deep, yesterday he was way off except on ball to Evans that Donovan negated.

Both Julio and Scotty were on their way to a big play but the ball to Scotty hit the dude covering him’s helmet and the ball to Julio was way off.

Damn Bucs are so hard to watch. They simply cannot play like a team, blame it on the coaches, thats there job to bring them together, not a team of free-lancers who hustle sometimes while taking lots of plays off.

  26. Buc4evr Says:

Maybe BL will go, but Brady will definitely be gone. Bucs are not the team to go anywhere at this point and Brady is in sharp decline. I don’t see him coming back and dealing with a dysfunctional team.

New QB next year and another lost decade.

  27. Big pirate Says:

Brady been under throwing Scotty miller all year. He’s finished with this team. No o line is not a good thing for a qb who can’t move. We need a young guy who can move around and make plays

  28. Pewter Power Says:

Lies!!!! If Brady wanted leftwich gone he’d be gone! If Brady is doing that much tweaking to the offense then leftwich is useless anyway. Just don’t believe it the way the hugged after the last second wins and the two of them celebrating with man hugs

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

Don’t worry haters like the real fans that have to suffer through Bowels & Leftnut, Brady is only with Tampa until the wheels come completely off and the Bucs don’t make the PO’s. He ain’t staying with all this he said she said drama. Go get Baker Mayfield, I heard he’s pretty good.

  30. BucsFan81 Says:

I want them all gone. This team was built to win this year and that’s all out the window. A lot of the players on the roster are on the other side of 30. They look slow and worn down. Especially with the NFL season now being longer by a game. We need youth and we need a mobile QB that can make plays. Time to move on and leave the old guys behind.

  31. Aceofaerospace Says:

The only positive that leftwich has accomplished is that he is guaranteed to be the Rooney rule every year for head coach now.

  32. robert Says:

    *courtesy interview*

  33. DungyDance Says:

I’m not buying Quinn’s intel. Would love for it to be true. But if Brady really wanted (i.e., demanded) to have more control, he’d have it. Before the season started, the team, owners, and us fans all had our jaws drop and tongues unfurl at the notion of Brady returning. So he’s telling me that if Brady approached with some conditions that they would go back to him and say no?! Don’t think so. This loyalty to BL has Arians written all over it. Arians was a great coach but he demanded a legacy as well. Bad call.

  34. Joe Russo Says:

OL most important starters injured. They get healthy, Bucs win, they don’t Bucs lose. Everything else is just noise

  35. MadMax Says:

I just dropped a left twitch in the toilet Bowle…

  36. Mike C Says:

Fire his @$$! No reason for this offense to be this bad!

  37. JimmyfromNY Says:

Absolute garbage in 23 years, there’s been no evidence of Brady backstabbing a coach or a teammate ever. Always behind the scenes. Gotcha. No actual evidence. No teammate or coach has ever complained about him. Made up crap againl

  38. Bucco Bruce Says:

This team has more problems than just Leftwich. Bowles is soft and often lost. Our secondary gets hurt constantly. We have no outside rushers worth a damn. Our RT best RT in the league imo is hurt and our LT is looking slower and heavier than years past. We paid considerably for some players that barely contribute and have highly drafted players that don’t contribute. We don’t make necessary moves to improve when necessary and pass up on insane deals that would highly improve our team in the long run.

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

Mumble and Rumble all you like. It’s the coaches, players, QB..whomever. This team looks old and quite tired. That was truly an embarrassment yesterday in front of a national audience. The Bengals are comin to town and they are formidable people. There D and O lines are marching to a victory tune. Just sit back and watch the difference in their play and ours. I just hope our Mngt is thinking about drafting us a mobile QB. They are here to stay.

  40. ClwJB Says:

Even if Brady has declined on the deep ball or is playing with a bum thumb or whatever

I just think about the next QB working with this OC and it send chills down my spine – if this guy can’t work with the GOAT and our cast of players to at least be mid level competitive – what in the heck does he do with Kyle or Blaine and the same or very similar cast…is less than Lovie even doable?

I mean right now the Texans would likely beat us – we have lost to every afc team this year and next up is Cincy

  41. Cobraboy Says:

Every time I log into JBF, I keep hoping a thread starts “Byron Leftwich Fired.”

    I am continually disappointed.

  42. Your Mom Says:

I remember way back when Leftwich was brought in as a backup QB to I think it was Josh Johnson, he told him, “Enjoy it while it lasts, because it never does.”

That always seemed a very negative thing to say, insubordinate to say to a teammate who was just getting their chance to take command.

If that’s the way he coaches, then it explains a lot.

He wasn’t a very good quarterback either.

  43. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

    O
    OLine
    OLine is
    OLine is a
    OLine is a massive
    OLine is a massive black
OLine is a massive black hole!

    That CANNOT be overstated!
WORST rushing team in the league!
ZERO time for TB or for the recievers to get open!

  44. Scooter Says:

This offense needs a spark. Roll the dice. Against the Bengals start whichever Backup QB is the most mobile.

  45. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

Hey Joe, any rumbling of a rift between Tom and M.E.? Something smells off there.

  46. Redeemer Says:

Brady didn’t fall of a cliff in less than one calendar year. I can’t and won’t accept that. I’ll admit, his pocket movement and usual pinpoint accuracy has suffered. There must be another reason. Maybe he’s covering up an injury. IMO he doesn’t trust his weapons or his line. We saw this at points last year, when the offense went through Gronk way too much. When someone pops open, and he misses the throw, that’s one thing. What about all the drops, holding calls and miscommunication. Not to mention the stagnant, predictable and downright bad play calling. If you give Brady a good line and running game, he’s more than enough. He just can’t carry a team on his back anymore. I think he’ll prove lots of people wrong next year, in a different uniform.

  47. Tye Says:

The question still looms as to WHY are they scared to FIRE his non-productive dumper?…

  48. Manny Says:

The article should have just read

“ rublings of tom brady coming to his senses”!
And we all would have known what you meant.

  49. Destinjohnny Says:

Who is the person responsible for giving us the worst O-line talent in the entire NFL??

if you cant run or pass block, you cant win

  50. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘This sort of jibes with yesterday’s report of Brady changing up the offense the night before games and not sharing tweaks with coaches’.

Conspiracy Theory #479: Tom Brady is leading a mutiny aboard the pirate ship. It has as much credibility as the previous 478 conspiracy theories.

MAYBE, just MAYBE, this year’s Bucs team was woefully over-rated from the very beginning of the year? That includes coaches, players, waterboys, you name it.

  51. Nprbuc Says:

Leftwhich! Remember a few games back when Baby Gronk ( Otten) had a real nice game for a rook. I seem to remember him catching nearly everything thrown his way and then got YAC too. ( I’m old and maybe only think I am right about that) Regardless, very impressive game by the young man. Point? Very next game he goes without ONE single target! Why could that possibly be? You would have to ask the man who calls the plays. What coach other than Leftnut would scheme a hot TE out of the game? Not many. He and Bowles have killed us.

  52. Defense Rules Says:

DestinJohnny … I agree with you 100% about our woeful OLine, but it’s even more than that. Yesterday for instance, with D Smith, Leverett, Hainsey, Mason & Wells starting, our OLine was doomed to failure going against SF’s top-ranked defense.

Example: if you look at the snap counts (Bucs had 76 plays), our 5 OLinemen each played 100% of the snaps. Brady didn’t get sacked, but he was pressured a LOT. No other OLinemen played, so there was no help there. Otton got 45 snaps, Brate got 28 & Kieft got 5 for a total of 78. So that’s 1 TE per play (no heavy sets for blocking IOW). Our WRs got LOTS of snaps: Godwin 69, Evans 66, Julio 55, Gage 25, Miller 11 for a total of 226 offensive snaps. Works out to 3 WRs on the field throughout the game. Our 2 RBs split snaps: White got 40, Fournette got 36.

Those must be the easiest formations in the world to defend. Particularly for the NFL’s #1 defense. Very little variety. Vanilla as can be?

Then look at the number of inexperienced, 2nd & 3rd string players we had out there, just on offense. And oh ya, with Byron controlling the puppet strings. It was NEVER gonna end well.

  53. AmauryGuzman Says:

Reedemer the guy has thrown 579 passes through 13 games. Insane amount. They can’t even run the damn ball compared to the other top teams. Herbert is second i believe after Brady in terms of attempts and he also has a crappy running game.

  54. AmauryGuzman Says:

The bucs are dead last when it comes to rushing the football. Such a poor running game . It takes the ability out for you to play action etc.

  55. Goatfarmer Says:

Rumblings must become demands, that become action.

And Bowles should offer to return to his DC post full time, let BA be interim, and then go get the next guy. Licht better be already on it.

  56. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Brady definitely had a bad game this Sunday. He either didn’t see guys that were wide open. Or he wasn’t confident he could make the throw. He over threw and under threw quite a bit too. The question is. Was Brady’s hand injured to the point it effected his accuracy enough he didn’t want to throw down field? Or was it just an out of character bad game on his part. Now having said that. Leftwich is terrible and should be fired. The problem with firing Leftwich is that Bowles obviously can’t take over play calling duties for the offense. We have already seen that Bowles makes crap game time decisions wearing two hats.. I can only imagine how bad his decision making will be running both offense and defense play calling. Along with head coaching responsibilities. That can’t happen. So either BA comes back to run the offense which undermines Bowles as head coach. Or you promote the qb coach or someone else to call plays. None of those options are probably are a guaranteed improvement. All of these options are flawed.

  57. St. Mary's Joe Says:

There’s not a bigger Brady fan than myself but based on what I’ve seen from Brady this year his time at QB is at its end. Is he playing like scared, yes. In his Patriot days it used to take a hit or two. Now it’s from the first snap. Can his passes be any shorter? I doubt it. Half his throws on a five step drop only go to the line of scrimmage. The majority of his third down passes are two yards short of the first down line. Last week 36 completion for 281. This week 34 for 253. That’s less than 8 yards per catch. Subtract the yac and it’s pathetic. I get the problems at O line but other teams have the same issues with better results. He’s proven enough to deserve the GOAT handle. I’d hate to see him become another Willie Mays with the Mets.

  58. BigMacAttack Says:

Brady’s throwing hand has been hurt all season and it keeps getting re-injured. I think shoulder got dinged up awhile back too. How come no one is writing about that. Yesterday Tom should have taken himself out of the game. Everything that could go wrong with the Bucs’ season has. Leftwich still needs to be replaced. The longer this mess continues, the shorter Todd Bowles’ leash and reigns get. I think the need a come to jesus meeting with ownership, coaches and management to try and find a way out of this funk. It’s too embarrassing and going to cost the Glazers too much time and money.

  59. BigMacAttack Says:

I just wish someone at 1BP would come clean and be honest about what’s really going on. This fan base deserves some real answers.

  60. Donuts Says:

I wish the Glazers were more demanding, walk into Bowles office and tell him to let Byron go today. It should have been done at the bye. I think Christenson would call a better or different game. Byron is overrated and won’t ever get a HC role. If it didn’t happen after SB it won’t ever happen.

  61. SOEbuc Says:

Bucs are not going from six to midnight in the running game if BL is fired right now. Brady will still be looking sloppy for whatever reason he is looking sloppy. Trade Lenny and draft Bijan Robinson with a plethora of good QB in this draft available as well. Robinson and White would be a nasty duo. No one can be more of a bust than Trask, so at least you know you have a third string already.

  62. Kentucky Buc Says:

This site should be renamed CasualFan.com. There might be 3-4 people on here that have a clue what they’re talking about. The rest of you guys just spout jibberish or some rehashed garbage from some hot take artist.

  63. Fitz Says:

Every year since Brady started to win Superbowls analysts have said that various quarterbacks who were great runners were the next best thing. They all played well for a while and got banged up running and retired. If run first quarterbacks were so great then Brady would not have dominated for so long. He may be getting older but the OL sucks and play calling is predictable. No quarterback in the league plays well when they are under pressure two seconds after they snap the ball.

    I think Brady is injured.

    I agree

  65. LakelandSteve Says:

What I don’t understand is the disconnect between Brady and Evans. They look like they just threw the two of them on the field together without ever having practiced. It’s mind boggling. They need to go back to Arians no risk it no biscuit offense and just let it fly. It can’t be any worse than 35-7.

  66. Oneilbuc Says:

Yeah Joe you must be klan !!

  67. Oneilbuc Says:

You let some of these white guys post stuff like that and you don’t let no body respond to that coward.

  68. Coburn Says:

I agree with the injury. Rotator cuffs don’t get better when you’re throwing every week… And then he went Nd injured his hand a couple times this year as well. Divorce does r help. I can tell you that first hand.. and then if he’s having issues with lefty.. yeah perfect storm

  69. Oneilbuc Says:

I guess those ints were BL fault that Brady threw and now he’s injured but no body said that last week against Saints or the Rams 2 weeks ago.

  70. Andrew Says:

Brady needs to sit down. He complained about Arians writing all over Byron’s, and Brady’s game plan last season. I guess he learned a lesson.

  71. Rod Munch Says:

Yucs2Bucsr – what in the world are you talking about dude? You copy and paste in my name by accident or something?

  72. BucU Says:

Until this coaching staff is GONE everything else is just white noise to me.

  73. deuceswild78 Says:

the jags fan in me is sooo glad he didn’t force his way into the jville job… but i’m Bucs #1 and wish he had so we could have an offense not so predictable and non sensical

  74. Jeffs Dad Says:

Its not all byron 65% of it is and the rest is oline and brady

  75. Realbucfan Says:

There was a hit earlier in year that Brady took to his shoulder I don’t think he ever has recovered from. And having to throw so much doesn’t help

  76. chris bell Says:

If he runs that damn swing pass to Godwin one more time I’m going to need a new TV. It almost got picked last week and hasn’t gained more then 3 yards since week 9 of last year. Leftwich this season is calling plays like he’s in the preseason open it up sir.

  77. BucEmUp Says:

    Gee who coulda guessed this?

  78. BOAT Says:

There are some ridiculous Brady haters in these parts. Leftwich is the worst coach in the entire NFL. And yet, we have tons of posts here pretending like he’s some kind of saint of football, and that Brady is the biggest cancer ever…….

    Unbelievable.

  79. IE Buc Says:

The OL play has affected Brady all year. At 45, with no mobility, he needs a good OL to play. That’s the reality. He just can’t take hits or rushes. This weak OL is affecting his throws. That’s definitely part of it.

  80. Tony Says:

I think the brains of Bowles & Leftwich are both deflated.

  81. Joshua porter Says:

Hopefully they can bring in bill Obrien to work with brady or tank next year for the USC qb and coach

  84. BuckyPhillips Says:

Leftwich Brady and bowles. All gotta go. 6-7 can be done with any QB

  85. BuckyPhillips Says:

BOAT- no real fan thinks lefty is a saint. Bruce was the genius and Brady is now too old to get the ball downfield.

  86. BuckyPhillips Says:

St Mary’s – “ I’d hate to see him become another Willie Mays with the Mets” ??? He won a SB and had his best year ever statistically. Brady addicted to the game and played one year too long

  87. Imnew Says:

Only losers quit on their team before it’s over. There have been injuries and retirements and subnormal performances but what the team needs is encouragements to lift them up and not negative comments to bring them down. My comment to lift them up is to use Deven Thompkins as a wide receiver to bolster the offence. They have a secret weapon that they are not using.

  88. JDub23 Says:

Ok ii understand love Brady but it becomes a when we have hold Brady a countable for his part in this to all the open wide receivers that he had either under the water over come on now the coaches and OL to but we all know Brady just haven’t been Brady that’s All it is to it

  89. HA-HA-HA Says:

It’s not just play calling during the game, as bad as that is.
It’s the design of the offence, the fit for players and the utter lack of any twerking for the opponent of the week.
