Defensive Domination

December 6th, 2022

Big night for edge rusher Carl Nassib.

For the fourth consecutive game, the Bucs held their opponent to 17 points or less in regulation. No surprise, the Bucs are 3-1 in those games.

One hell of a performance it was by the Bucs defense tonight, extra impressive because the defense never really was able to make the slimy Saints one-dimensional because Tampa Bay didn’t lead by more than three points in the game.

The Saints, however, punted on 60 percent of their drives and converted just 5 of 14 third-down attempts. The Saints’ running game went nowhere all night and the leaky Bucs pass defense made enough big plays to save its anemic offense.

Tampa Bay’s pass rush didn’t get much going, but Lavonte David got a big sack early and Carl Nassib delivered late multiple times, including a 10-yard sack on the Saints’ final 3-and-out drive to help give Tom Brady one final shot to earn the “W.” And he did.

Joe was intrigued to see Nassib and Anthony Nelson take a lot of snaps away from Joe Tryon-Shoyinka tonight. As a result, Joe believes the Bucs were more physical overall and more sound against the run.

The great news is the Bucs have a defense worthy of the postseason, a defense that should belong to a 9-3 football team. Instead, the defense is part of a 6-6 team with a bad offense.

Still time to bring the offense up a notch or two, however, which would make the Bucs crazy dangerous in the playoffs.

This is not a playoff team. We will not be dangerous in the postseason unless Leftwich is fired.

Nassib saved us from taking it in the a$$ tonight. How ironic.

    94 > 9

Nassib is an effort guy. JTS is all finesse.

  4. EEK Says:

Don’t underestimate how terrible the Saints are

Dalton did his best impression of himself

Another week with zero take aways

    What a fabulous effort!

  6. Yucs2Bucsr Says:

Love his energy and hopefully Tom Goes off against his team next year and puts on a showcase of why the 49ers should sign him, but let’s be real boys if they make the playoffs Dallas is going to come in here and whoop this team !! Nice to steal a win, but Tom can’t throw the deep ball and was 24 for 47 and all 10-15 yard passes

  7. Mikejp Says:

I disagree with you Joe. The Saints could only score 50 points during the previous 4 matches. In 3 of 4 matches, they managed just less than 13 points. That means the Bucs defense was just an average this match.

keep Nelson and Nassib in more than JTS who has not amounted to more than a hill of beans

Look what happens when Bowles grows a pair and let’s the offense off the leash. More of this. Let Tom Cook!

  11. Beej Says:

Had they out had all those drops we’d have been screwed

  12. Leda Says:

    Except for Donavan Smith fauts.

  13. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Let’s not mention the two huge Saints drops on third downs that bailed out this defense. They make those two catches and we lose by 14

Such childish stupidity. I suppose it would have been far worse 15 years ago.

Keanu Neal seemed to be all over the field last night?? 22 was flashing on TV. What a huge hit to break up the pass! I couldn’t believe the bucs d were going to give up that first down, it was a perfect throw by Dalton.

drome agree^^ dbags will be dbags

  17. NEfan Says:

Was I the only one that saw when Nassib had his sack he took Dalton down by his nut bag? NO joke it’s a fact.

  18. Reach87 Says:

If you think #9 doesn’t show as much effort as 94, you are blind. They are both effort guys…consistently. Why use great plays from one player to denigrate a player on the same team, that you claim to be a fan of? Go Bucs!

  19. Tampamac Says:

    @Joe
What’s the story with Logan Hall? I just looked up he’s only played like 34% of the defensive snaps this year. By comparison, Nacho has played 47%. I know they rotate quite a bit, but that number seems low for your #1 draft pick. From what I’ve seen, he usually flashes and causes disruption when he’s in, but does Bowles not trust him? Any insider insight would be appreciated.

I remember a receiver, TO maybe, one time being dragged down after the catch by his Woodrow. Poor guy.

  21. Mike Says:

Great to have Nassib in the rotation and contributing! Bucs D is playing tough!

    Tampamac,

Good observation. I had a similar query once last nite when I swear I saw Hall line up at MLB for one snap, then rush.

As for JTS, he just has NO power and shouldn’t be starting at Edge until he develops power. Glad to see Nassib and Nelson be more productive last nite.
I don’t recall Avery having many snaps this game?

    Good for Carl Nassib
He seems like a good guy and a hard-working player.
Hopefully, he’ll change some people’s minds.

Great post Joes! Nassib earned his money!
